I am an old guy who was an avid reader of "James Hedley Chase," way back in the 1960s. In one of the novels, a fellow was complaining as follows:- "Look at these people, they are oblivious of good value of things; Good Wine Good Food and Good Social Classes. They are blind to these things". We have reached that point today. Everybody from the President to the the lowest Hustler is building flats, selling Chicken and eggs, stealing farm produce from one another and generally mingling as Hustlers, people oblivious of Class and good things of life. That is the reason we no longer have Low Density Areas in our cities. Everywhere is a Slum these days.

I grew up in Nakuru and in the 1960s and 70s. In those days, there were only Government Estates, Nakuru Municipal Council and Kenya Railway Houses. There were ample spaces for Children to play and we used to have inter-estate "Football Competitions" using a ball made of scrap paper. There was no overcrowding then because people lived in the rural areas. Now, everyone has migrated to town, and the small towns in the rural areas are dying because of lack of population while the Major towns are deteriorating because of increase in population. Do you know that Ruiru is the THIRD most populous Town in Kenya. All the farms are gone and if Uhuru subdivides his land and sells plots, Ruiru would be the 2nd most populous tow after Nairobi in 10 years.

Urban planning is a strange concept to most Africans. The village is still strongly residing in the mind if an African urbanite. School education does not change any of that because it is deeply engraved in the mind of an African not to have long range urban planning. It is an African culture not to plan and/or not to respect plans.

But those who move there will still go with the African mentality of sluminizing his environment and it will soon start degrading into another Buru Buru and eventually into a Pipeline estate. The problem is not in the lactation but the African mindset. But the mindset challenge to Africans can be understood because there aren't many Africans who gave lived through more than 2 generations in an urban setting. Africans moved to urban centres with a village mentality. That's where the problem lies.

While your arguments about Kibera and Mukuru are valid, it does not justify the continued lack of planning that is happening in Nairobi. Neighbourhoods must be zoned, every country that has developed to First World standards has followed this basic concept. You cannot just put up a bunch of unregulated apartments in areas that were not designated to have high-rise apartments. Today it's Kileleshwa, tomorrow it will be the Nairobi National Park. Rules have to be established. It's too late to save Nairobi, but perhaps the solution going forward is to improve devolution so that people can live elsewhere.

@@duncan.odhiambo.77 Dude there is no wivu here, don't think you got a coin and earned it in a decent way! Nairobi is huge, it has over 5M population, if those 5M can have a space to live, you still can take your earned honest coin there and stop making noises! Stop that medieval thought, Nairobi no longer has 1M, we're taking over almost 6M....Come to America and see people living in the deep city square surrounded by tallest buildings over 50 floors all over the place....relax the population is not even high, 25yrs down the line you will go insane with your decent earned coins LOL
