Here in UK we have houses as old as 300-500yrs old houses which the county council maintain as they continue building others in various spaces in the UK. White people do not trouble their citizens. Build new estates, then move these people into the new ones. Then repair, renovate and maintain the old ones for the purpose of house other people at a cheaper rate. To build new houses you do not have to demolish the old ones. Acquire land elsewhere and build new houses for your citizens. This is my take.
What is the big deal with preserving those relics?Just take a photo of them and put them in the National Archives. That land is heavily underutilized as it is.
The government should build one or two affordable flats in phases, move the families there instead of misplacing families not knowing where to start from in this difficult times
Asbestos is only harmful to your health when you disturb it. If left untouched, it's okay. It's will actually be more harmful to those incharge of demolition and disposal
Houses in Jerusalem, Jericho, Lumumba, Maringo-highrise have good structures all they need to do is remove the roofing and put new ones. Those Houses were built by the Israelis and you can see there was no flooding in those estates

Yaani so many of you here don’t care if fellow Kenyans suffer and become homeless. Where are people from a whole 7 estates expected to go to find other housing? Ruto should build housing elsewhere then move the people in instead of evicting Kenyans bila plan. Watch and see what happens to the new housing, it’s likely that very few of the original residents will be able to go back to their estates. And because there will be resistance, wait and see how whole estates will be burned to the ground, and the Collateral damage. History repeats itself.
What matters is to have a good urban renewal plan, not just houses. We need to consider good recreational spaces, transport links, commercial and adminstrative spaces that tie with the residence. Secondly, engage the community diring the entire design process to ensure their needs are met and that we aren't developing future ghettos. Thirdly, I'm sure there are some historically significant elements that need to preserved. Those should be identified and their use included in a new plan. If this isn't done, the project will quite honestly not add value.
For this I to totally support.Change should be embraced.History should not be an excuse,It is like saying that we continue wearing hides and skins to preserve history.
If people didn't live there, it would be okay. Where do they go in the meantime, and they have lived there for decades, long before you were born? Some of the residents of these houses are very old. There must be a temporary arrangement for them in the meantime. Let's stop regarding Kenyans as commodities. They are human.
They should have been maintained like Old Town in Mombasa and Lamu! However, some of them should be preserved for historical purposes to generate revenue from tourism in the future. Homes in Europe are hundreds of years old and they're all properly maintained and Kenyans should do the same.
It's probably only in Kenya where the European colonization left a permanent psychological damage to the Africans mind. Kenyans who travel, or live overseas can confirm seeing preserved historic figures, places, museums, buildings, sports hall of fame, amusement parks, etc. People spend lots of money to visit, or tour such places. All over Western Europe, the Americas, Asia and even in some African countries: West African, Egypt, Ethiopia, to mention a few, they have preserved their national history. Kenya is exceptional! The Whiteman came, found no formal government, but tribal and ethnic groupings. Each tribe had their own traditional rulers and Oral History. To the colonizers, the African cultures, traditions & norms, were considered primitive and had to be replaced by the Whiteman's religion & education system. We should preserve our historic figures, important places and historic events for the future generation. Recently I was surprised that a neatly kept small house on a street I always take to work in Dallas City, Texas, was a historic place. The sign on the front yard caught my eyes. It read, "Lee Harvey Oswald Rooming House Museum." Lee Harvey Oswald was the assassin of the 35th American President, John F. Kennedy, Nov. 22, 1963. The world's historical places attracts lots of visitors yearly. People travel and spend a lot of money to see some unique places in the world. Kenya must learn from other countries how to preserve the Historical national land marks, a good example is T.J. Mboya's old apartment in Ziwani. The house should be saved and made a museum. The museum will pay its own maintenance from fees collected from visitors. The Archeologists, Interior Ministry, Tourism, Education and Historians, should take charge of cataloging and writing facts about each of the historic places, buildings, events, etc.
@@solomonogado5505 A lot of historical buildings that were used by the freedom fighters to organize meetings before independence by KAU members like my grandfather, Muinga Chokwe and Mboya in Nairobi are in disrepair. But why should people be given priority when they have lived their from their grandparents, time to let other people also enjoy fruits of independence. Also urban renewal is not demolition of older houses which should be preserved for historical values!
If Nairobi county had a working system, they'd have refurbished, maintained, or built up better homes, and they'd have benefited the citizens of Kenya. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and old houses like these could be having asbestos, which is such a hazard to human health. Hopefully, they can do better with the new upcoming projects.
Government must be humane. We all know that UDA wants to grab this land, then people currently in government will "own" these houses. However if they insist, then the houses shouldn't be those ugly high rise apartments being built under affordable housing, the owners must be the current residents Giving 2 months notice to residents to vacate is cruel. Give them 6 months at least.
In developed countries, they preserve historical buildings. They also ensure that they are maintained well Old houses usually cost more than newer houses
How about building the new houses away from the area. Move the people and renovate the old house as a heritage for our future generations. Must we always pull buildings down and cut deals with developers ? I believe if the houses / grounds can be restored . Trees and vegetation restored that would add beauty and enhance our environment around the the city.
