The problem in Ethiopia stems from the fact that the elites (from all ethnic groups) have become completely ungovernable. It’s unfortunate because the people are actually quite the opposite.
the problem is that its too ethnically and religiously diverse, and its a country made by empire, not a nation state. So it has the same problems as all other multiethnic African countries.
@Handle0108 there are 100s of nations with high amount kf diversity living peacefully. All ethnicities can't have a country then we'll have 1000s of small countries and it'll be unproductive.
This is the only comment that makes sense. Many people blame Abiy for debt default and conflict as if he is the one who brought these. 😂 30%of Ethiopia belongs to somalia. It's called the Somali region and it's populated and governed by Somalis who have long wanted to rejoin Somalia after the british awarded it to Ethiopia for helping against the Italians. Somalia has also received military assurances from Egypt, who has its own existential problems with Ethiopia, to ensure Somali sovereignty isn't denigrated by an invasion. Somaliland is not a united entity. They literally just lost a civil war and their eastern territory to a people seeking to be a seperate federal state of Somalia called Khatuumo. In their west and the only viable link to Ethiopia another region has defected from it called Awdal which also seeks to be recognised as a federal state of Somalia. So Somaliland would be the smallest country in Africa, governed by a single clan and be flanked on all sides by Somalia... Does that sound like a country or a clan enclave.
@@skp8748 A counterargument can be made that the many clans of Somalia cannot get along with each other, and the reason Somaliland has been more stable is because it is made up of mostly members of the same clan. I wouldn't say Ethiopia would cease to exist if some areas secede-the Amhara at least would likely still call their country "Ethiopia," and some other ethnic groups would likely be part of it as well. Most of Ethiopian history has centered around the history of the Habesha people (Tigray and Amhara people), with other groups like the Somalis, Oromo, etc, mostly being incorporated after the conquest of Menelik II in the 19th century. @@countcryptonite That's the thing--these borders aren't white nor are they colonial. Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations on earth, and no, its people are not culturally the same. The reason for this is geography. Being mountainous has advantages when defending yourself from invasion, such as the Somali and Italian invasions of Ethiopia. But it is a double edged sword. Without an external enemy to promote unity, the people are simply too isolated. Despite living in proximity for literally thousands of years, their cultures evolved separately because the mountains keep people isolated for the most part. This reminds me of the Italian city states era. same issue. Ethiopia only became unified due to the empires mostly from Tigray and Amhara,, which is where Habesha culture came from. That is not inherently a bad thing, as the other tribes didn't have written languages or much organization. Ethiopia is not the most diverse country in the world, some competitors to that include the United States and India, both of which are unified despite being incredibly diverse. Ethiopia needs three things, realistically. Firstly, increased trade between regions. Build a rail line between the capitols of every region. From Mekelle to Bahr Dar, From Bahr Dar to Adama, From Adama to Jijiga, and all connected to Addis. I am not really against Abby's recognition of Somaliland, regardless of what anyone says. Get that port at all costs. Don't let Djibouti price gouge. Dont waste money on a navy, build the port and build a rail line to the closest major city. Secondly, diplomatic effort. Invite Fano, Tigray, and OLF to a roundtable. Figure it out. No preconditions. If it were me, I'd invite them into a room then lock the door. No one leaves until an agreement is reached. No guns inside, just unarmed security to prevent physical fights. Even if a fight breaks out or someone is injured , dont stop the meeting. And thirdly, unifying forces. Cross cultural exchange program. Military bootcamp as national service (not controversial, many safer countries do this, including South Korea, Sweden, and Israel. Reinstitute the cross cultural teaching program that the communist government had. That's one of the few things I would actually thank the Derg for.

When the APP accepted the order to disarm many of the regional forces defected and joined Fano. The Federal government has failed to protect Amhara civilians from massacres and then forces them to disarm so they have no choice to resist or else they are just waiting to be slaughtered. Another thing to correct is that the Derg was not an Amhara entity. It was a communist junta that slaughtered based on political ideology not ethnic.
@@user-uq6pd1nv1j don't deny its full of history exist .. Only amhara language and amhara people freely move and 90% of derg official is amhara tribe. even they admitted lol. blood is thicker than water.
The irony is that the Tigray were allowed to rule because the Oromo and Amhara couldn't trust each other. The only solution is a more complete federalization. A system like the American Senate and House where representation is equal and proportional respectively. I fear that the overall Ethiopian identity will struggle without something like a constitutional monarchy or a long period of time.
Monarchy and such nonsense will not be tolerated. Remember the ethnic group of that said monarch would matter a lot as no ethnic group wants to allow their “enemies” to gain power on them. The best solution is decentralisation.
there is no such Ethiopian identity. the monarchy is only Amhara ethnic based monarchy.. ..their monarchy ban Oromo language, identity and culture.. as the result of bloody struggle...OROMIA was created. therefore it unlikely that Amhara Monarchy come to power by no means. Oromia is more prepare and have an army to face the enemy.
Abiy Ahmed should have his nobel peace price revoked. It's clear he doesn't care about peace. Look at what he's doing with Egypt, Sudan and Somalia-Somaliland.

9:58 it was the widespread Oromo youth (Kerro/querro) protests that pressured the then Ethiopian government (EPRDF) led TPLF to transfer power. The Amhara protest helped the cause but it is by no means the one that pressured EPRDF to come to negotiation for new political reform. @@visuali235 Kenyan Somalis are not stupid. They wouldn't want to join a failed state like Somalia. But they can join if they wish. NEP isn't quite worthy.
Ethiopia and Eritrea were never ever enemies of Sudan. The greedy elite wants to debilirately separate the nations. Historically Sudan has helped Ethiopia and Eritrea and the other way around. Ethiopians, Eritreans, Sudanese, Somalis are all basically the same people. Sorry but Sudanese and Ethiopians look so much the same while Sudanese keep approaching Arabs when in reality it is much more culturally closer to Eastern Africa. Even the music and physical features are very close. Thing is that politics changed everything. Egyptians always felt more superior.
I have very little sympathy for Ethiopia. They remind me of Israel. Trampling over the rights of their fellow human beings & neighbors out of a misplaced sense of supremacy. No wonder they are at war with literally everyone.
THANK YOU!!!! Idk why people don't see this. That was the perfect analogy since they get heavy aid just to destabilize the region. This is clearly an old video made a couple of weeks ago since it didn't even discuss how Abiy is attempting to annex a piece of Somalia's coast in the midst of all this madness.
Main stream academia typically blames European colonial powers for butchering African national borders, dislocating people, grouping differing groups into a single country, and causing endless conflicts. Here we have Ethiopia, a once African power which was able to resist colonialism (for the most part) and able to dictate their own national boundary. Yet Ethiopia, interestingly enough, also suffers from the same multi-ethnics issue plaguing many of her neighbors. It appears that with or without the European interference, ethnic discord is an inherent issue that many African states have to be to resolve before they can realize the African century.
This is what Abiy wanted! You can see it in against Tigray, against Amhara, against Oromia, against Eritrea, against Somalia already! He’s the most elusive war mongering politician in the world!
Compliments on making this complex conflict understandable! Two mistakes on displaying leaders though: 1. At 6:15 Mengistu Hailemariam (Oromo) instead of Meles Zenawi (Tigray) 2. At 17:28 Abdel Fattah Burhan (Sudan) instead of Isaias Afewerki (Eritrea)
Isaias aferwerki is technically tigrinya But Eritreas ethnic groups are unified and apeased and they see each other as one nation and call themself eritreans not their ethnic groups
Good video I’m guessing we’ll be getting an Ethiopia + Somaliland v Somalia video soon. It’s unfortunate how many conflicts Abiy is dragging Ethiopia into. Ethiopia won’t know peace while this madman is still in power
The country never used to have this border maybe they should go back to their Abyssinia border and grant every ethnic group in Ethiopia it’s independence
BRICS is going balls to the wall. They are betting that they can fix this. If they succeed, the international respect will be enormous. As will be the humiliation if they fail. A very high risk/high reward gamble.
It's a diversion tactic. But a very careless act. Ethiopia has much more to loose with playing games with a nation who has 6.5million brethren in his own country than Somalia.

A few things to correct:- 1/ Fano fighters are well trained and equipped. The Amhara culture is a warrior culture. Just like Spartans Amhara kids grow up trying to be the best markmen in their villages. Under estimating the Fano and the Amharas is going to be the biggest mistake our enemies make. 2/ Tigirains committed crimes against humanity and genocide in Amhara lands and destroyed the region. 3/ There is no place called Tigre. That region is Amhara land. Welqayit and Tegede has always been Amhara land. 4/ The Derg military junta was led by Oromos not Amharas. In fact they killed millions of Amhars youths during the Red terror. 5/ There has been an all out war on Amhara region and people for over a year and civilians had been killed by Drones bought from Turkey and money provided by UAE. We will not forget this!!!
Ethiopia is the root cause for continous instability in Somalia. They continue to fund arm warlords, and see existent of a stable Somali state as a threat. The only resistance to their aggression has been Alshabab who have now become a tool of Alqaeida and no longer serve any benefit in Somalia. Now that we are recovering and have debt relief and slowly rebuilding they want to invade and give legitimacy to separatist region that was slowly being reintegrated into the state. It’s very disappointing that after 30 years of war we can now loose all our stability and become a proxy for Egypt to defend our sovereignty
Picking Somalia for a fight will be his biggest mistake! It's a nation made for fighting! Somalia has it's arms embargo removed! Turkey Qatar Egypt Saudi Arabia EU US China are all going to deploy weapons to Somalia as grants and many will be purchased too, since Somalia has virtually no more debt as it was written off all. All Shabab is largely defeated now. China's support for Somalia was the last nail in the coffin Abi Ahmed Ethiopia! The US EU UK Turkey Arab League China all the great powers oppose Ethiopia's provocation against Somalia. The Ogaden Somalia region in Ethiopia the second largest state in Ethiopia that borders Somalia would rejoin Somalia as soon a fight starts! Somalis are one ethnic one language one religion and geography wise not divided so it's easy for them to unite.
Despite Somalia not being as strong as 1977 as they are recovering from long civil war... Still I think this time I think Ogaden rejoining Somalia is much easier due to Ethiopia being in a mess and Ogaden just bordering Somalia 🇸🇴
Ethiopia is perhaps an example of why turning a historically unitary state federal, especially ethnic based federalism with armed militias without developing the necessary institutions that make a federation work is a bad idea.
well the next best option is for one to subjugate others which would result in conflict and cause Balkanisation. Empire might work in the Middle Ages but in the 21st century that can't be maintained.
@@Handle0108 Not really. There might be other options. 1) A form of federalization not based solely on ethnicity 2) A democratic and unitary but gradually decentralizing state. 3) Or hell, just the same ethnic federation but at least without armed ethnic local militias parallel to the federal army.

The main reason the war in Amhara region is the non-stop ethinic cleansing happening in Ethiopia everywhere. It has a religious face too. Pray for Ethiopia. Power in the wrong hands.
A lot of talk goes into the link between the scattered ethnic makeup of countries in Africa and their struggles. I think a lot of people don’t realise that ethnic homogeneity does not equal state stability. Numerous functioning and powerful states feature a jumbled kaleidoscope of ethnic groups (and yes, even countries that have had their borders drawn for them by Europeans). Simply, it doesn’t necessarily Matter the ethnographic makeup, it always comes down to the strength of the state socio-political-institutional infrastructure, which invariably influences how entrenched the notion of a national identity is within its populace across ethnic demographics. This is the true plight of African countries and not simply poor border demarcations. People consistently overemphasise ethnic homogeneity in the context of African statehood where it simply doesn’t exist in 90% of the world’s countries. This ultimately detracts from the major reasons behind the African nation’s problems with state stability, those being debt trapping and foreign meddling.
You are addressing my initial thoughts about this - Ethiopia is the only African nation not fully colonized by European powers (Italy did partially for a short period prior to WW2 but it was more a brief military occupation). Ethiopia still has the same issues w/multiple ethnicities & tribal conflicts that are usually blamed on European colonization & boundaries drawn in their interests alone. I'm not letting the colonizers off the hook by any means, but it seems the problem is more deeply rooted than that, at least w/this 1 example.
The mapping of Europeans is the reason why Ethiopia is the way it is now. Eritrea the historical Ethiopian access to the ocean was intial cut of Ethiopia because of European maping leaving entire country ocean leas. The British by giving Reserve Area to Ethiopia literally made one of modern Ethiopia's modern enemy in Somalia who subsequently worked as catalyst and support in 1977 Ethiopia civil war and 1991 Eritrean seceeding and forming WSLF and ONLF
@@sideshowbob yeah well I mean, one could argue that the 'nation' in and of itself functioned and functions as a tool of collectivisation across multiple ethnic groups. @@ismaaciilahmed7665 I've done some superficial research on Ethiopian history (I'm a history Geek in general), & have always been under the impression their "core" nation has been very similar most of their history going back to Biblical times. Certainly borders have shifted along the edges, & access to the sea has been a long contested issue. I want to go back & revisit this history . . .
Very informative like always. Thanks for the work you do. I'm curious how this will effect the situation in the red sea since that appears to be escalating.
Thank you for following with so much detail all the stages of the conflict in Ethiopia. It is a tragic, chaotic and very recent conflict and while I am not affected in any way I am very interested and invested, as much as with the Ukraine and Gaza conflicts. However, very few people cover this conflict, let alone well, so thank you. As for Ethiopia, I can only hope stuff gets better and their president stops being so belligerent or they get a new president. I used to hear before the conflict that it seemed to be a somewhat resurging country so it is really a shame that it turned out the exact opposite.
I'm not familiar with the conflict but it sounds like the best thing for this mess would be to separate into independent states based on ethnic / tribal / sectarian divisions. Trying to force one Ethiopian nation where the "citizens" don't share a national vision seems to be the source of their problems. I don't have a clue how or if they would share the national resources which is probably a main source of contention.
@@rightclick7266 You hit the nail on the head. The country only continues because of foreign military aid forcing the nation together under threat of GENOClDE. Basically, it's a far worse Yugoslavia
Its true that Ethiopia is a country made up of many nations. But to say that they should unite and assume one identity does not mean we destroy, throw away or disregard the individual cultures. A democratic and secular state should be able to embrace and allow inner diversity while directing our efforts to the common good of all our individual cultures. This might sound idealistic and I'm sure it seems like wishful thinking, but it in fact is very possible. A dedicated and inclusive policy aimed at achieving unity is essential. Its been done before, look at South Africa. The Zulu Nation is probably the greatest and proudest people group in the region, but no one can ever claim that they are not a proud and inseparable part of South Africa. The richness of the Zulu Nation and it's culture has been used to enrich the entire Republic of SA for the benefit of all the other nations included in SA. Thus unity has a multiplier effect for a nation and it enriches the culture of the nation. Can you imagine the USA without all it's constituent nations? Imagine a USA without the black American nation. One thing I noticed though, religious differences are much harder to reconcile than others. But hard doesn't necessarily mean impossible. Tanzania is an example of an ethnically diverse state made up of many nations, some with different religions. But the fact that Zanzibar (Muslim land) and Tanganyika (Primarily Christian with a bit of Islam) willingly united and assume one identity as Tanzanians till today is truly a testament to what is possible when do away with bigotry and self-centeredness. Many African countries could learn a lot from Tanzania, but most are so shortsighted they prefer to go the route of 1994 Rwanda.
@catfish9391 What about it? Foreign powers are trying to foment trouble and challenge India's unity in diversity. Not the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last. Sorry to disappoint you, but India will always win.
This script was written and edited by TPLFites. The script intentionally distorted the truth. FYI, the last ruler in Ethiopia with 100% Amhara blood was Tewodros II. The rest are either Tigre or Oromo as well as mixed origin.
As a non biased Somali, one thing I can say about Ethiopia is this compared to Somalis: Ethiopians "love" their country and are just fighting for who rules each time. But Somalis unlike Ethiopians want secession, clan/ethnic state, etc. Unlike Somalia where each clan especially certain ones either want to secede or rule. That's why I don't believe the bullshit narratives of Somalis saying " The west is keeping Ethiopia together". Ethiopia unlike Somalia or other African states such as Kenya aren't artificial and have been around for centuries. Ethiopia has always been a centralized state. But the only way Ethiopia to disintegrate would be because of "nature" as nothing lasts forever.
One element you didn't add was the Somali crisis. Ethiopia's deal with Somaliland places another trigger for conflict along the country's southeastern border, one Somalia, weak as it is, could take advantage of should civil war occur.
1- We're not weak. 2- Our president played it beautifully and the deal is null and void 3- Ethiopia just united all Somalis. We have no interest in this mess. Our president met with Egypt, Eritrea and are holding a tri-lateral meeting this moth to discuss this situation. We've never had a more pro-active, chess-player type president EVER. So many errors makes the video unwatchable. Example:
9:55 it was the widespread Oromo youth protests that led the government led by TPLF to transfer power. The Amhara efforts helped the cause but it is by no means the one that pressured TPLF to negotiation for political reform.
17:27 that is not Eritrea's president. He is Sudan's military leader Al Burhan.
6:10 people shown in the pictures are not Tigrayan leaders
Video is full of misunderstanding of Ethiopian politics, which by itself is complex and requires a lot of research and consideration.

The problem in Ethiopia stems from the fact that the elites (from all ethnic groups) have become completely ungovernable. It’s unfortunate because the people are actually quite the opposite.

And thirdly, unifying forces. Cross cultural exchange program. Military bootcamp as national service (not controversial, many safer countries do this, including South Korea, Sweden, and Israel. The video is well researched but one thing I would add is the difference between the Amhara regional government and Fano. The Amhara Prosperity Party(APP) is viewed by most Amharas as Abiy’s puppet and are in full cooperation with the Federal government.

Tigray could have easily done this but they didn't
Main stream academia typically blames European colonial powers for butchering African national borders, dislocating people, grouping differing groups into a single country, and causing endless conflicts. Here we have Ethiopia, a once African power which was able to resist colonialism (for the most part) and able to dictate their own national boundary. Yet Ethiopia, interestingly enough, also suffers from the same multi-ethnics issue plaguing many of her neighbors. It appears that with or without the European interference, ethnic discord is an inherent issue that many African states have to be to resolve before they can realize the African century.

1/ Fano fighters are well trained and equipped.
What about the Ziad Barre invasion in the 1979 to form "Greater Somalia"? You started first. Losers

Simply, it doesn’t necessarily
Matter the ethnographic makeup, it always comes down to the strength of the state socio-political-institutional infrastructure, which invariably influences how entrenched the notion of a national identity is within its populace across ethnic demographics.
@@sideshowbobspot on! I have had similar thoughts
India is another example. Hopefully Ethiopia becomes a bit more like us.

Ethiopians "love" their country and are just fighting for who rules each time.
Somalis existed before Ethiopia my friend
One element you didn't add was the Somali crisis. Ethiopia's deal with Somaliland places another trigger for conflict along the country's southeastern border, one Somalia, weak as it is, could take advantage of should civil war occur.
1- We're not weak. 2- Our president played it beautifully and the deal is null and void 3- Ethiopia just united all Somalis. We have no interest in this mess.
