The Chinese are getting away with all these atrocities because these so called custodians of our laws are allowing these Chinese to run a mockery. We as Kenyans need to wake up and fight against such developers and the corrupt leaders in office accepting bribes. They’ve enabled so much and not upholding the law. Am glad it’s coming to light and the conversation is ongoing.
It would be good if we have the names put up of the office bearers of the offices involved in this illegalities. This way we know exactly to hold accountable

Nairobi was well planned by the British. Estates like Jericho, Maringo, and Mbotela had 24-hour operating dispensaries, designated play grounds, nursery schools, primary schools, and social halls. Yes, we had all these amenities growing up. Kilimani was for the upper class. Nice manicured lawns and fences. Buruburu was another upper-class estate. We had well stocked libraries. All that had gone down the drain. I said this 7 years ago that Kilimani was becoming a pipeline that went to a group of schools. Right now, kilimani is a pipeline with makeup and filters. Look at Eastleigh, once a neighborhood that was clean and easy to navigate. Nairobi has become overpopulated, and our resources were not meant to accommodate these many people. Ruai sewerage can't handle this.
because natives were not allowed to live in most parts of the city. freedom came with population boom in a city planned for 250k people only. but we really should have sorted it 60 years on
They are coming for Jericho, Maringo, Shauri Moyo etc....in the name of "affordable housing". What's the difference between what the Chinese are doing in Kilimani and what Ruto is planning for our estates in Eastlands? Nairobi is now officially A CONCRETE JUNGLE
I totally agree.... The amount of people does not equate the infrastructure. The President needs to support the rural areas. People who lived in Mombasa, Nakuru and Eldoret used to stay in their cities... Now... They have no choice but to seek opportuinitues in Nairobi. Also, Social media glamorises Nairobi for the rural people...and the whole idea of being urbanised, dressing smart, being educated and Americanised are all associated with Nairobi... God Help Us. Let me not even start with so called other expat Africans coming in Bulk.... It's too much
She is right, except that there is another group messing up South B, South C and Eastleigh. I have been in the approvals committee and may wish to come and shed some of the issues she is raising.
If possible better live outside the city. Concrete is just dead probably no wonder people living there are depressed. Green spaces and nature in general is soothing to the mind.
I was at a farm this weekend in limuru called twin rivers. The owner has recognized that people in ruaka and neighbouring areas have no green space and come there to picnic and have their kids play on the grass. Grass is now a luxury for those willing to pay 500 bon entrance fee
All the Nairobi Planning Problems , leave it for the Nairobi Planners , 1948 Nairobi Masterplan provided everything , just few modifications and we will make the entire Nairobi city better .
We can't be blaming the Chinese without doing a self inventory. Look at the Laikipia air base, for instance. The Commanders at the Airbase are complaining of Buildings encroaching the base. They say flying in and out might be impaired. Can you imagine what a security risk this poses? In times of war , those fighter jets need to go out efficiently to defend the country. How come the Commander in Chief has not taken up the issue! Eastleigh Airbase is not in good shape either. Highrises are encroaching the base. What is happening for real?
Sadly the same people who are fighting here like this woman are the same people who have created a menace in Nairobi. They are the ones who have erected high buildings in other estates like Umoja, Innercore, Kayole, Buruburu, Dandora, etc without realizing they are hitting other estates. Now when it's their turn to be hit hard, wanalalamika. Ask that woman where she owns property in Nairobi for rental. Kweli mkuki ni kwa nguruwe, kwa mwanadamu ni muchungu.
Please justify your comment. You are making an allegation. It is for you to prove it. You can't allege without evidence, then demand of her to prove that she doesn't own high rise buildings in Umoja. And at the core of the problem is actually successive county and national govt officials and it is driven by short term gains through corruption. There are public servants we pay through our taxes to safeguard our interests. That's where the big let down is. And , ooh yes! "Hatupangwingwi! Even if they are thieves, they are our thieves. They are the ones we want"! Do you recall? That's the African mentality that's destroying us all.
It's good to be optimistic as Kenyans that one day all go be beta in Kenya but the Truth is, my Country is a gone Case. Hatuna nchi hapa. The Nation will only come back to track when a revolution happens to bring back sanity to this beautiful Nation. These so called leaders follow the money not the Law. Theft of Public funds/ Corruption is the norm and Not the New Norm. This is NOT a Chinese issue or a foreigner or a Kenyan developer matter. It's the True State of a Failed State. The system is intentionally opaque to serve Kenyans. So Sad 😭😭😢
The law should change and include the following; (A) scrapers above the allowed blocks should pay extra to the county annually to discourage buyers who occupy contested neighborhoods (B) maintenance of all social amenities like pathways, streetlights, pavements and others to be levied on such developers. (C) a written approval by members association in the neighborhood to be presented as requirement for approval by NCC and NEMA (D) documentation of occupation hazard to be mandatory to home buyers
The situation is even worse in parklands. all trees are being cut. No planning and wonder how basic amenities will be met. Extremely sad . Whole ecosystems destroyed. Soon we wont have fresh air to breath. This is something that needs urgent attention!!. Like now . After 5 years we wont be able to look back
But the governor has dimples ! That supersedes everything ! , but on a serious note we have the numbers and we have the power , there should be a class action lawsuit and let the people who purchase this home know one day they will come down , "your government " will not always be in power just us what happened in portland or what is going on in kirima's land , once we remove the incentive to buy this apartments the madness will end
She is very dynamic and on point. The guys are making excuses and trying to shift her core argument. It is not abt Kenyan lawmakers or the Chinese business men. It is about the consequences as she has brilliantly illustrated. Urban planning is very important for sustainability of quality of life. Sadly, too many Africans look for instant gratifications and think very little abt common good for all. Over crowding and lack of basic amenities and infrastructure is a recipe for total chaos and serious consequences for generations. I like her tenacity and her articulation of the issues. She is keeping the fight alive.👏🏼✅👊🏽
Ask Seii if the Chinese would do the same thing in Rwanda. Again, I agree with Seii. Voting in a regime is not a mistake. Failing to hold it to account is.
Please Kenyans let's learn to expand outwards not just upwards. It's gonna be a very ugly concrete jungle. We grew up in these places when they were lovely n everyone knew all the others but now we don't want to go there anymore !!!!!
Kenya is the only country where foreigners come in and do as they please, in fact we bend our morals and laws to accommodate them esp if they have lighter skin but also we do it for our west africans.
That, is the Truth!. The unvarnished truth! The Kenyans with their perennial docility give too much latitude to foreigners, even going to the extent of being relegated to second place, and having less rights and privileges in their own country. And the appalling thing is that this is not reciprocated for Kenyans in the countries of origin of the foreigners getting the coddled VIP Treatment here.
@@reubentv2948 Singapore is 743 square km; meanwhile Kenya is 582,650.2 square kilometers. Kenya is 793 times BIGGER than Singapore. There is no need for us to be living on top of each other. Also, Singapore is developed because, it has a high Chinese population (they immigrated there hundreds of years ago), when China closed her doors to the world, the manufacturers from the West moved their factories to Singapore (close to China) and began to collaborate with the Chinese businessmen to infiltrate the large Chinese business market. The West poured business, capital, skills and know how into Singapore and Malaysia. Any extra work was sourced out to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam (that is why Vietnam was able to recover so fast from the war). Shame on you. The fact that he glibly lied about his degree for YEARS should have told you exactly who he was such by the time you got to the ballot you were ready to vote differently. Shame on you again.
A future government shall severely punish anyone who has built illegally. Remember the structures that were demolished without compensation because they were built on Thika Road public land?
As a young urban planner with my little experience, the structures are well laid , but the professionals in the built environment ( planners, architects, surveyors) they use the law as a buffet for economic gain at the expense of the people and the environment which is against the tenets of sustainable development.
Great debate. I think the focus should be two pronged: 1.) pushing the government to update infrastructure like roads, sewage and water so that these areas can attract investors and 2.) push developers to operate within the law. The reality is that the cost of land and construction has gone up over the years. It is not realistic to expect a developer to put up only 4 floors because that will not allow them to make a return given the high cost of construction and the high cost they acquired the land. An apartment will cost 50M and will not attract buyers if they do that. Demand will be low. It is also abit discriminatory to tell someone who has land that they cannot develop on that land because those who developed earlier in the neighborhood have some kind of privilege. I think high rise apartments in Kilimani and Kileleshwa are here to stay as a result of capitalism, high demand and high cost of land. We should push government to update infrastructure as we push developers to comply with the laws. Also, keep in mind government is collecting 4% stamp duty on each apartment. Government makes more from new developments by collecting 4% stamp duty. The more the apartments, the more our broke government makes. Government will therefore have an incentive to approve more and more apartments coz they will collect more and more stamp duty, and rental income tax, among others.
We should be pushing the government to build infrastructure on the land OUTSIDE Nairobi, so that people can move outside Nairobi. Nairobi is congested it's a mad house. And this thing of building flats, so that people are living higglypiggly on top of each other is just plain wrong and unhealthy spiritually and psychologically.
Please tell those Chinese to come construct at Khushianda. We have two skyscrapers 3 floors high (moja ni ya my khotsa wanje Atsanasi Matendechere PhD) and we need more. Someone?
Not every cause is a good cause. This is one cause which, if successful, will create housing scarcity in Nairobi and force people to commute long hours to far off places like Rongai, while the air above Lang'ata and South C and Nairobi West is uninhabited. The cause will have won but life will be worse. Not all causes are good.

What are permanent solutions for not duly sanctioned skyscrapers which are not fit for habitable
She's so right. How can 200 people live on infrastructure that was made for 30 people? Where is the sewerage, parking, amenities etc ?

Amen. Spread the word. She's the woman for the job. Get Jerotich in City Hall right ASAP.
From just listening to her? Without interrogating other aspects that come with the job? Don't be emotional like that. This is how we end up with bad leaders coz of our folly and spontaneity

Each extra storey costs money... Wow. I now understand why these apartments are going for ridiculously high prices! 😡😡😡
She is brilliant! I love what she says about holding people we voted for to account. That is such foreign language in Kenya. We tend to defend those we voted for however rotten they are just because we voted for them. Ridiculous and pure brainwashing
Jerotich is fighting the good fight. Good luck to her. But it's a lost cause as our leaders are the enablers of these developments. Emma Too has been fighting a similar fight in Kileleshwa for ages. Its still a good fight as history will remember these champions of our environment. Keep going Jerotich !
Wangari Maathai told us to be like the hummingbird. Let's do our part no matter how daunting the task.
@@kijana2030 Well said.
Your defeatist attitude is annoying.
Great job Jerotich. The Ciry Planning must be called out. Otherwise, we will have these rogue developers move to Runda to build skyscrapers there.
Jerotich, you truly are a breath of fresh air, spot on, and on the good side of history. Those in government should aspire to reach your level of excellence. The real tragedy is when good people become silent on things that matter. Keep fighting the good fight! ✊🏽🇰🇪
Couldn’t have said it better. I grew up in Pumwani and later in South C. Now South C is becoming another Eastleigh. Nairobi is fvcked.
Nairobi was great growing up all this affluence has gone I remember more than two/3 decades ago
because natives were not allowed to live in most parts of the city. freedom came with population boom in a city planned for 250k people only. but we really should have sorted it 60 years on
They are coming for Jericho, Maringo, Shauri Moyo etc....in the name of "affordable housing".

Having a green space is now a luxury.
sad but real
In related story nairobi remand built for 250 today 2000!😮
We can't be blaming the Chinese without doing a self inventory.
Look at the Laikipia air base, for instance. The Commanders at the Airbase are complaining of Buildings encroaching the base. They say flying in and out might be impaired. Can you imagine what a security risk this poses? In times of war , those fighter jets need to go out efficiently to defend the country. How come the Commander in Chief has not taken up the issue!
Eastleigh Airbase is not in good shape either. Highrises are encroaching the base.
What is happening for real?
She is complaining about her territory.. let those in laikipia complain too..
I agree with you Madam Seii. Langata will soon be better than Lavington/Kilimani.
True Patriot, keep on fighting for the weak
I agree..nowadays these rentals don't have spaces where kids can play..they end up staying indoors with phones and tvs to entertain themselves
So Sad 😭😭😢
Then in that case, it’s time to immigrate
@@discounthub1401 no we fight for our space through a revolution and be patriotic for once.
The law should change and include the following;
(A) scrapers above the allowed blocks should pay extra to the county annually to discourage buyers who occupy contested neighborhoods
(B) maintenance of all social amenities like pathways, streetlights, pavements and others to be levied on such developers.
(C) a written approval by members association in the neighborhood to be presented as requirement for approval by NCC and NEMA
(D) documentation of occupation hazard to be mandatory to home buyers
would never work ,the land lords and developers will spread the cost to the tenants .
That can work, very high taxes
I understand the Chinese contractors are now using Burundian labourers working for a pittance on their construction sites
Sad
Candid interview 🙏

Please Kenyans let's learn to expand outwards not just upwards. It's gonna be a very ugly concrete jungle. We grew up in these places when they were lovely n everyone knew all the others but now we don't want to go there anymore !!!!!
The building should stop until you set up the difference,
Kenya is the only country where foreigners come in and do as they please, in fact we bend our morals and laws to accommodate them esp if they have lighter skin but also we do it for our west africans.
Exactly what Singapore did. Go and see how Singapore is developed.
And they do it with the help of corrupt officials
People love to talk up the Asian Tigers, but they were given help that was denied Africa. The West supported them because they don't have resources, but they refuse to support Africa to become a manufacturing giant because they want out resources for themselves!!!!!

A future government shall severely punish anyone who has built illegally. Remember the structures that were demolished without compensation because they were built on Thika Road public land?
I stan a gorgeous, intelligent, erudite African rose.
As a young urban planner with my little experience, the structures are well laid , but the professionals in the built environment ( planners, architects, surveyors) they use the law as a buffet for economic gain at the expense of the people and the environment which is against the tenets of sustainable development.
Eric, sick burn 😂 ati mdomo ni kubwa so inakula zaidi 😂😂
Eric hajasema poa😂
In Germany they say „lies have short legs „ cause the lies are short lived.
If only we had 10 leaders like this.
