I can finally understand why some people say that it can take up to a year to really see how your hair looks/behaves when fully and consistently hydrated. My hair now has definition and curl separation without me actually having to really manipulate it, even during the wash process. Detangling takes maybe 5 minutes.

I wore sister locks for several years and this style involves not using oils or butter on the hair/scalp. I washed hair every 7-10 days, and my scalp was never dry or flaky despite not even using conditioner. When I cut my locs off I didn't understand why I needed oils/butters, but that is what the natural hair community taught so I tried it. My scalp did not like it! I thought I was some sort of strange exception until I came across BGC and the no oil/butter philosophy. It actually gave me permission to do what I knew worked best for my scalp.

My husband has locs and used to have horrible buildup when we used oils/beeswax etc. We tried a lot of things but we literally do the bare minimum now with washing/conditioning and I use a botanical gel to retwists. Buildup where? Not in my hair or his lol

Oils have never worked for me. My hair always felt oddly dry but oily at the same time. I called it OCD (oily - crunchy - dry). But greasy straw is so accurate too. Even though I would like for my hair to by shinier, I would rather skip the oil and accept the non shiny look because my hair itself is healthier

  • @crabrangoonz8026

yeah the natural hair community really played us with the whole oil situation. i've been natural my entire life and somehow i was convinced that what worked for me was wrong!!! i grew up getting hot oil treatments BEFORE clarifying or using a butter on the ends of twists/braids and washed my hair every 1-2 weeks (depending on the style) and my hair was soooo healthy. this past year i've gone back to basics and my hair has been flourishing!! my scalp has never been healthier. i've noticed less flakes, higher moisture retention and less breakage since i've stopped using butters, creams and oils.

I’m totally in love with this routine❤❤❤. I started yesterday, and for the first time my hair is crazy soft, defined, and not greasy. If this happened in the first wash, can’t wait to see what’s going to happen in a month! I’m hooked. My confidence level is on high. I’m so proud of my kinky/curly hair.❤❤❤❤😊I tossed all my butters and oils. Oh, and you are flawless girl. Love your style!

I ended up not using oils and butters by accident and I love what it has done for my hair! I had locs, and I cut them off. It was my first time having a short cut so all I did was wash, condition & finger coil with gel. I absolutely LOVE my hair.
I have always tried to hide my hair. I hated it. It has grown so beautifully and my curls are sooooo beautiful! Instead of rushing to find my next weave to cover my hair because “it wasn’t manageable” I now look forward to wash day and just setting MY curls! I used to think something was wrong with my hair and the whole time there was just something wrong with the way I “took care” of it!! Love your content! Keeeeeeep pushing this content out! No shade to oils and butters but my results are just wow. I have never loved my hair as much as I do now!

Honestly because my scalp is soo good now , that is reason enough for me now, not to go back to oils and butters. My scalp was ridiculous before, RICDICULOUS. There were may times I couldn't bare the itching, but NOT oiling my scalp has been the best thing I could have done for myself. I really thought I had dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis . Now I wash every 7 days that is my limit and even then my scalp isn't nearly as bad as it was then. Like Jenn said, it took time but it was worth it.

It’s been over a year since I’ve done no raw oils and butters from Black girl curls and I’m not going back. It really does take 8 months to 1 year to see a change. I’ve had so much issues with my scalp constantly flakey 2 days after washing my hair no matter how I clarified or oiled my scalp and now my scalp feels amazing no longer itchy unless it’s after 7 days. My hair is in its best state and I’ve been 10 years natural. Wash n gos never looked better and I have a better understanding of caring for my hair. It’s worth it. Hair stays hydrated.

I randomly stumbled onto this when it was trending.
Usually I complained about how the online natural hair community chases trends. But this time I decided to go all in.
I have no regrets. I love how my hair feels now. It's extra moisturized and best of all, I'm not longer leaving oil stains on my clothes/ pillows.

Speaking as someone who has never used raw oils or butter the process of shampoo, condition, and style does make natural hair care simple. I don't know if I'm an expert, but even with long hair it takes me no more than 1 1/2hrs. I'm a wash-n-go girl almost all of the time, but on occasion I wear a bun or a twisted updo. Depending on how my week is going and how that affects my hair I redo it every 4 -5 days because my scalp is oily and I don't want to deal with a lot of tangles.

Thank you for making me realize that this is what forever changed my scalp! I didn’t know I had transitioned until you explained your method. I used oil and butters to the extent that oil would drip down my face too lol..Now, I shampoo, condition and then moisturize minus the oil. I leave it alone protected all week and it’s still moisturized on wash day even if I decide to braid it out. I’ve seen so much growth doing this so I’m never going back! Thanks girl ❤️

Thanks for taking a look back on the no oil and butter. It does scare a lot of people. I started ease up on using oil back in 2019 (I had a consult with a hair specialist). It was not doing anything for me. I learned to wash n go. In 2020 I did wash for half of year. In 2021 I started to them all year and never looked back. We still can use oil but in formulated products…

I'm glad I knew early on that my hair hates oils. Wash and gos are literally wash and go for me, no need to define or anything, and I think it's because I keep it super simple: Shampoo, Conditioner, Leave in, maybe some kind of cream for hold. Small amounts of everything!

Great video!!!! I’ve been doing the No RAW oils and butters since September 2021 and my hair is thriving!!! I think we don’t give enough credits to Black girls curls for all this knowledge!
I would add 3 other tips:
    1. Subscribe to See some curls (for at least 3 months if budget allows)
    2. Partner with a tight curl specialist (trained by BCG if available in your area. The trip is so worth it!)
    3. Get a shape! Accept to cut what needs to get cut!
Thanks again Jen for spreading the word 😊

I’ll play devils advocate and say that I don’t think think this method originated from BGC. I personally started my learning from Breanna Bell, another stylist on IG and first heard a stylist talk about this in 2011 (ish) on Taren Guy’s channel. BGC has definitely popularize this though and I do agree with your additional tips are seeing a curl specialist. It definitely makes learning this method easier (and faster) and one won’t have to sift through all of the misinformation on Beyoncé’s internet.

We kind of started this journey at the same time Jenn and I agree with everything you said! the only thing I did different is that my first month I washed my hair every day lol. I listened to BGC when they said if your hair feels dry wash it! and it felt dry every day so I was like, I guess we're going to experiment with this! I honestly feel like it worked though! I had fresh hair everyday, and eventually my sets started looking good for longer so I would go longer. Most recently I was washing my hair twice a week, and the past month I have been able to go over a week with my hair still looking great and feeling great. I also had a goal of no added hair for a year and made it happen! I was a maid of honor and got married with my natural hair out and I felt absolutely amazing doing it. My hair is fuller, I can see my curls even before I put products in my '4c' hair, my edges are behaving themselves with no problems, and I am just so in love with my hair now. I have a mirror on my desk when I work and I am constantly looking at her like, girl you look so good! lol. I want to thank you for sharing your journey with us because it definitely help me a lot. Keep being awesome my haitian sister!! I just have one wish: Can you grow you hair out next year? lolol jk. (kinda jk, I'd love to see it but I know you're loving the short hair and it looks great on you so I'm not mad hehe)

@@Chromagens I was working from home at the time and my work day started at 11 AM so I had time in the morning. And yes I was using products. I shampooed and conditioned everyday and then used a botanical gel to style. I also find it interesting that some of the products i started with and didn't like, I can use now and it's a much better experience. I just started locs 3 months ago and I was SO worried about buildup and itchiness within my locs due to constant dandruff/scalp issues.
During month 1, I decided to stop oiling my scalp and hair and increase hydration by washing more often and misting with water/rose water only instead and drinking more water. MY SCALP HAS NEVER BEEN THE SAME.
It took a month for my scalp and hair to adjust but since then, no daily itching, inflammation and flaking. Only time I itch is right around wash day at the 2 week mark which tells me it’s time to wash
My advice is listen to your hair and not trends or what everyone is doing. Your hair and scalp may thank you

Girl….it has definitely been a process to see definition. I started this No oils and butter journey after combing out my 5 year old locs. B4 my locs I rocked w n go’s regularly using Eco Styler gel. I had awesome definition but stiff hair.
Now I am 7 months in and seeing the fruits of my labor. I went to my stylist last week and she told me she could see the improvement and hydration. I did the work, which for me in the beginning…washing every 3 to 4 days. There were days…but I pushed through and now my hair is thriving with definition and body.
I learned through my loc journey about going through the process. It took a year for my hair to loc. So I am pushing through with my loose natural and definitely seeing improvement.
Now I have to work on getting the same results myself when I do my hair, lol.

Thank you so much for this video! Your breakdown is really helpful. You have influenced me to use less oils and butters since you started your journey but I haven’t completely removed them from my routine. I have seen an improvement with my hair feeling more moisturized when I am layering less products and reducing the oils I add to my hair. I will take that leap of no oils/butters eventually 😅
One quick side bar: Since going natural, I have developed the irrational fear about letting any stylist touch it. I know I need a real trim because my ends give me grief. I have gone through many ups and downs with my hair (also while permed) when going to hair dressers and it always seems to end up damaged one way or another. Because of this I do my own protective styles and mini trims. I also dust my ends often to keep them relatively healthy. I know there are good stylists out there, I just need to look and be vocal about what I am looking for.

    • @JennJackson
      @JennJackson  Рік тому +3

I had the same fear and that was AFTER seeing some stylists who didn’t who what to do with my hair. You aren’t alone. That’s why I make sure to thoroughly vet a stylist before I sit in their chair. They need to believe the same philosophy that I do AND have a book of receipts.

I agree with no oil and butter. I may occasionally add avocado oil to my hair to break a gel cast.
But otherwise, there is no need to add oil/butter as there is already oil in our hair conditioners and leave-in conditioners. Adding extra oil and butter on top is redundant.

I'm genuinely asking but did people really discovered that washing your hair weekly was better through the no oils and no butter thing or am I misunderstanding something. I've been natural since 2014 and maybe 1 year in my regimen I was washing my hair once a week. I remember privileging wigs because I could wash my hair weekly. I used and still use oil for my prepoo (when I feel like it) but I don't remember ever completely not using shampoo. The most I went was using shampoo once every 2 weeks and I'm not prone to dandruff or any scalp issue. I've seen with great pleasure how this method made more enjoyable doing their hair for many women but some of the things that people seem to discover now I feel many UA-camrs I followed were saying back in 2014 or 2017 (when I realized I wasn't patient enough to learn how to properly install a wig).

Once I started paying attention to what my hair wanted it was easy. I wash depending on how my hair feels so usual every 1-2 weeks and I deep condition every time. If my hair needs moisturizing I just add a little water and it plumps right up. I'm not against oils and butters they just don't work on my 4c hair.

What do you specifically mean by raw oils? ... this video is great! And I agree with a lot of the information because my hair flourished more without oils especially when not using oils as a leave in product apposed to using it in a deep conditioner or as a wash out treatment. When things in my life change (out side if my hair regimen) usually I tend to fall off the consistency train and my hair suffers so ya consistency is key! I would love to see you and Nappyfu do more collaborations especially since she uses oils in her regimen occasionally I feel conversations would be very interesting. @jfprecious your deep conditioner definitely has oil in it already. Honestly you don't have to add oil to it. In my previous comment, when I meant the oil has processed with other ingredients during the manufacturing of the shampoo, or conditioner. So the oil is no longer in its raw form. If you mix the oil in the your deep conditioner, you are using raw oil in its raw state. Watch Jen's videos on raw oils and butter, they are very informative.

When I use oils on my scalp it it itches by day 2 so I stopped oiling it long time ago especially after washday and i can do up to 7 days without issues. My current routine involves scooping and spreading on blown out hair as recommended by green beauty and i really like how my scalp, hair looks and feels. I still prepoo with it and use raw butters and other oil/butter based products in my routine and I will not stop. Gotta say - I need an heavy cut to try this method again. I had a lot of fall out with this method.
I think it was really the shampoo session that makes the process of detangle easier.
However, I’m still using eco and cream - but I throughly shampoo - clarify and moisturize shampoo. Deep condition add a touch of henna and aloe powder to my deep conditioner. My hair is so much easier to detangle, style and set - micro towel dry and blow dry. Takes a while to dry - with my HIGH DENSITy, high porosity, 4a strands. But my tangles are at bey. I do apply bond oil curl smith to my ends - and I oil my scalp and apply additional oil pre wash.
    Great video !!!!

Still adjusting to not being heavy handed. Getting a hooded dryer and consistently choosing Sunday as my “wash hour” day has made the experience of doing my hair feel luxurious and like I’m pampering myself. Before wash day use to feel like a chore and I would dread it. I would hog up the bathroom and leave with sore arms 😂. Now it’s a lot more efficient and therapeutic.
Also choosing the right detangling tools have made a huge difference too!

Can be used for a twist out or braid out but the twists/braids still needs to be dried under a hooded dryer, left in for 12-24 hours for best results, then taken down the next morning.
