The summer of 1988 I was just a kid working on music row. Keith drives up in a brand new Silver Corvette. I comment on the car, and he said "you wanna take it for a spin?" Me driving a new Corvette down 16th avenue with Keith Whitley riding shotgun. True story.

Back when this song came out, I was a young single mother, alone in the world with my one-year-old daughter. And I was scared of the world. Looking back now, I remember hearing this song...crying a few tears at time and singing along at other times. Three kids and two marriages later, I can look back on the years with many fond memories...some pain, and a lot of lessons learned. --And when I hear this song again, it's as if time has stood still, and I'm still 21 years-old...with my little daughter, Mia...right by my side.

I love these old videos of Keith, with my husband Lou Toomey playing guitar. Lou was gearing up for another busy year of touring to support Keith in promoting his most successful album to date, when he heard the news on the radio. No one can match his vocals. For the past few years the band guys try to reunite every May to reminisce, catch up, and honor Keith's memory. Covid made 2020's reunion impossible, but hopefully they'll resume this year. RIP Keith

It was great to read your comments about Keith and your husband Lou. Really enjoy his playing, especially on the live concert they did from Burlington North Carolina back in 1988. Lou definitely made that guitar talk/sing for sure!!
I remember buying this album of Keith Whitley in early 1988, no one could come close to his singing and emotion, not even Garth or Tim or Alan or Clint, but you could tell they were very much influenced by him, No Doubt!

I am 55 years old. I cried like a baby when I got the news he was dead. He was an incredible entertainer, songwriter and singer. Tell Lorrie I love her.
I was born on May 9th.. that was the day he died. He’ll always be one of the legends of country music!
At the time of his death, he was my fav artist. I had tickets to go see him the year he died. But never got to see him. He passed away right before the concert. I was so sad when he died. I still sing and play his songs and listen to him on CD. We lost a great artist folks! He was true country for sure! Not like some of these artists now days. They try to mix rap with country. Give me a break. Can not believe that the Nashville studio producers are willing to record some of the crap that we have in today's country music!

Not sure where all of this judgement about his character is coming from. His beautiful music came from within,and how he lived his life is only a small part of his story. And yes, a lot of the new artist could learn from his style, but few of them have actually experience his pain and will never come close to the quality songs he left us with in such a short span, he reminds me of Hank Williams of a different generation, but at least he respected the traditions .Let's face it, those of us who really like country music relate to the hurt and pain. The new songs about shiny green tractors and driving around in our pick up trucks does a disservice to the music most of us grew up on and love.

My uncle (Earl Thomas Conley) sang a great duet with him called "Brotherly Love". If you're not familiar with Earl's music, I think you'll like it.

I have loved this song for so long and loved Keith Whitley from the first time I saw and heard him. He was one of the most gifted performer we will ever see in country music. I get choked up just listening to him knowing what a talent we lost when he died, what a waste. Keith your memory lives on in every song I hear.

I've heard some artists try to cover this, but nobody ever put the emotion into this song like Keith did. A tragic loss to country music and the world.
Well you got to live through it to feel it and there is nothing more inspiring and detrimental at the same time as a broken heart.
I was born exactly 3 months after he died(August 9th, 1989), such a shame. Keith is the greatest singer I've ever heard. More talent in his little finger than all the new country artists today combined.
How do you not LOVE Keith Whitley? He is a legend right along side George Jones, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams... If the world was a country song, it would sure be a wonderful place.

Been listening to country music since early 70s, and although I love all kinds of music, country music is my favorite if had to choose. I discovered Keith Whitley not long before he died. Been listening to him since--a beautiful voice with a lot of feeling !! I hope you keep listening to "older" country, as there are so many great artists--many are gone now, but can never be replaced. I got Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings autographs in Las Vegas in 1991 and treasure meeting them. Both so nice and thanked me for asking for their autographs. Saw Randy Travis, George Strait, and Merle Haggard in concert and all so amazing. Keep listening Kerry ...

Wow, you have seen a lot of the country artists. It is wonderful you came over to see your country singers you love. I never knew if country music was popular in Europe. I don't think it's an accident that Keith Whitley was there to help you become sober, yes very personal for you this man. I am very happy for you. I still feel so bad that Keith left us so young, but here he was able to help you Kerry. I am not too familiar with Patty L. or Allison K. but will check them out. I have heard of Patty L. for many years. I love Vince Gill and he helped me over a rough time in 1985 with a song on the radio called If It Weren't for Him. He has a beautiful and unique voice. And yes, I love his song Go Rest High, but I didn't realize he wrote it for Keith. I will check that out...thank you! I heard he wrote for his brother. Vince is a very talented and kind man. I will Vince Gill the one who got away i lived in Tahoe from 1984 to 1999 California side then i came home to Ireland i saw my first concert in 1981 in the calneva smokey robionson sinatra owned it then yep its a small world..Vince wrote go rest high for Keith..a year later his bro died so he reworked the song for him such a powerfuĺ sòng...As for his gutar licks did you know Vince Gill was invited to be in the Dire straits band By mark knopfler that how good he is i have seen video of Eric clapton checking out his style

He passed in May 1989...I was 8 years old and at home with the chickenpox the day he died, and listened to the radio all day as they played all of his songs. I'll never forget it.
Unreal talent here that would've been so big today...who know's how big this guy would've gotten. Absolutely amazing vocals..You can look in this mans eyes in this and tell he is very troubled by some things. RIP.

Keith was such a great singer. he is gone, but his music lives on forever!! i love his singing and he doesn't go crazy on stage, he just acts like himself. some performers try to act show off on stage, but Keith always performed like himself.

Born in Ashland, Kentucky, Whitley grew up in nearby Sandy Hook. Whitley began his career there in 1970, performing in Ralph Stanley's band. Establishing himself as a lead singer in bluegrass music, Whitley moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1983 and began his recording career there. His first Top 20 Country Hit single, "Miami, My Amy", was released in 1986. While touring for his album L.A. to Miami, he married country singer Lorrie Morgan. In 1988, his first three singles from his studio album Don't Close Your Eyes, the title song, "When You Say Nothing at All" and "I'm No Stranger to the Rain" were number-one hits. Several years of alcoholism severely deteriorated his health and he died in 1989 at the age of 34. A friend of my dad knew Keith personally whenever Keith came to Kentucky they would get together & have a jam session my dad's friend said that Keith was about as down home & a person can get. My dad's friend has recently passed so I know him & Keith are having a jam session in heaven & I know my mom is sitting right there listening to them & thinking of my dad how he would love to be there listening to the two of them
