    I don’t think that people realize that “feeding the birds” isn’t about the birds, it’s about the woman. Michael and Jane wouldn’t feed the birds with the tuppence, but they would help feed the woman by buying her seeds. That’s the issue with the bank, they don’t think about he woman who needs the money just the frivolousness of feeding birds in the first place, missing the forest for the trees. At least that’s my opinion.

    • @princedonovaughn1182
      @princedonovaughn1182 6 років тому +43

      Actually it's not that either. According to the Sherman's (who wrote the music) the true meaning is it only takes a small amount to be kind. She (the bird woman) represents the idea, a tuppent is practically nothing but to the bird it is everything. That little bit of money feeds them, it's practically nothing but it changes lives.

      Feed the birds has always reminded me of Another Disney song, there's room for everything in this world.
      'Are not sparrows sold two for a penny? And yet it is impossible for one of them to fall to the ground without your heavenly Father’s will... Do not be afraid, then; you count for more than a host of sparrows...And if a man gives so much as a draught of cold water to one of the least of these here, because he is a disciple of mine, I promise you, he shall not miss his reward.' --Matthew 10

    People in the comments here keep trying to turn the issue into a "First World/rich people's problems" thing. As if only rich people need to "stop being so adult about everything." I've worked in jobs where my boss didn't give a rat's ass about me and studied for classes that stressed me into panic attacks every night, and I'm pretty sure a lot of other broke college students can relate. People from all walks of life have been trapped in situations where being an "so adult about everything" feels like a burden, and things like depression and family issues can strike anyone, rich or poor. The message of the "Mary Poppins" world for me is that a spoonful of sugar to distract us, at least momentarily, from our problems can be a form of self-care. It reminds us that whatever we're going through, it's not the end of the world, there is still goodness and fun to be enjoyed, and that a small change of perspective can help us better push through to the other side and remind us of our priorities. I think that's something everyone can benefit from.

    To me Mary Poppins isn't a person. She is the embodiment of pure joy, family bonds and unlimited imagination. She shows that everyone, no matter how old could use some adventure.
    That adventure of course is shared with the ones you love. Cherish your loved ones, because we are here for a bit. You can't close yourself out and not live the life you're given. Go out, have fun and enjoy your imagination.

    One of the best analysis of the character´s in the books and the films ever. I especially appreciated the mention of the esoteric aspect in the books and the author´s involvement with Gurdjieff´s teachings. She was also into eastern spiritual traditions. Thank you so much for this wonderful video and Merry Christmas/Happy Yule everyone. Shared, for sure!

      @Laverne Blaszczyk i don't agree. Mary Poppins is a much deeper story.
      Mcfee was fun, but doesn't have as many life lessons and is more meant for kids than for adults.

    • @tess2082
      @tess2082 6 років тому +1

      @Wanja Söderberg Björkman meant for kids you mean? I think its more of a family movie. It has a very clear storyline about how you lose your childlike wonder as an adult and how it's good to hold on to a little of that. That storyline is more meant for adults than kids i'd say. Then it also has the storyline of a nanny coming to a boring household to go on amazing adventures with the kids, which is the part meant more for kids. All ages can enjoy it, and that's great. Nanny Mcphee can also be fun for adults, but it doesn't have as clear of a storyline that's meant for them only if i remember correctly (saw it as a teen, i'm an adult now)

    I still feel that the father character on the second movie is a tad... too whimsically faced from the very beginning. As much as the first movie was a romp, the father felt detached enough and cold enough that him turning the bank down felt like something big.
    In the second movie... the aunt is a proto-Poppins and the father... well, he kinda always looks like he is a second away from breaking into tap dancing while singing with cartoon fish. Yes, he has those memories somewhere but... it ruins the importance of some scenes when one's emotional walls are made of bubble instead of stone.

    Main theme of Mary Poppins Returns is that Michael Bank’s children had had to grow up too fast, dealing with the loss of their mother and possibly loss of their home. The older children had essentially be the parents to both their younger brother & their father. Mary Poppins made feel that it was all right for them to be children

  • @WillScarlet16
    @WillScarlet16 6 років тому +14

    I have to say, I never got these impressions reading the book. I always had a sense PL Travers disliked children. In the books it's always the children who are fools, always acting like brats and never appreciating anything, and it's Mary Poppins who needs to STOP the nonsense and bring things to order. That was always why I preferred the films.

Disney kinda killed the character...

      the children have such strong imaginations that they get so heavily involved in playing that it becomes a magical adventure, but they were just looking at chalk drawings/ visiting an old relative/ watching the chimney sweep. Mary Poppins lets them bring it out rather than telling them off for it.

Could it possible that Slytherin House has an ambassador who radiates obvious light, whose virtue and kindness are apparent on first viewing? Mary is cold and controlled on the surface but wild and willful underneath, which seems pretty Slytherin to me, but she uses those qualities for wise and altruistic ends.
