- Emily Blunt talks to BBC Radio 1's Film Critic Ali Plumb about how she took on the role of Disney's iconic nanny in Mary Poppins Returns. She reveals her favourite things about playing the character, her love for Dick Van Dyke & Meryl Streep, plus how her baby kept throwing up on her on-set.
He is the best interviewer ever!
He truly is
We're quite fond of him, too...
Yara - he literally is
BBC Radio 1 PLs keep him forever
40 years old white dude XD
Her "off we go" in the bathtub scene gives me chills every time I see it.
Me too.. how is that even possible...
forestfires 94 Anything’s possible, even the impossible!
GirlyGirl 03 wow.
Good chills or bad chills?
Yeess. A little glimpse of the eternal childish imagination she never loses in her.
Ali, you're my favourite interviewer. You interact so effortlessly with the actors. You do your research and really truly want to engage and talk about the finer details which you can tell they appreciate. You ask interesting, thought provoking questions whilst also keeping things light and funny.
You're a joy to watch.
Agreed! He is wonderful.
orlandy101 This man needs to be knighted one day.
Jeeze chill out! He's not A brain surgeon!!!!
Mathona Moore doesn’t mean he can’t feel passionately about him smh
you are legitimately one of the most generous, kind and funny interviewers on the media right now. dude you deserve an own show, this is a talent to interact with stars in such a way- it is visible that you do really care for these people and this so fckng seldom these days. thank you!
From her interviews, Emily seems as lovely on the inside as she is on the outside, and from the snippets I have seen of the movie, she appears to be practically perfect as Mary Poppins in every way. There is room enough in this world to have two wonderful Mary Poppins movies with both Julie Andrews and Emily Blunt cast separately as Mary.
I've seen the movie and I do agree! Her portrayal follows the books, so in my opinion it can't go wrong and I'm glad Emily decided to take inspiration from the books rather than try to imitate Julie Andrews. I love them both so so much!
@@chaesoohyuns She may have decided not to try to imitate Julie Andrews' Mary Poppins "actively", but I don't see a very different Mary Poppins in Blunt's performance. I think her job is pretty similar except for the lack of Andrews' gorgeous face and smile and naturalness performance.
Great point.
I was very nervous she'd ruin thetime because I just loved julie Andrews, but she was incredible.
I think Emily Blunt is a great actress and all, but i think she wasn’t right for the role of Mary Poppins. She didn’t seem believable to be the character. IMO, only Julie Andrews can play Mary Poppins practically perfect in every way.
Julie Andrews: "Screw it! I'm not gonna make a cameo in Mary Poppins Returns, I'm gonna voice a sea monster in Aquaman!"
what? she didnt made a cameo
Indeed
@@Koza6969 She was offered a cameo, but turned it down because she didn't want to distract from Emily's performance as Mary.
Amy Lane And she honestly knew what she was doing. If she was confirmed for a cameo everyone would be anticipating it and then that would be the only thing they would talk about.
Jay Tasia precisely
This is the ultimate power move in the British vs American war with John Krasinski.. nothing is more British than Mary Poppins
Okem But both are American movies. :)
@@spencerfrankclayton4348 Mary Poppins is a British nanny character from an Australian writer, when Australia was part of Britain. Disney takes all our childhood stories we grew up with, and tries to claim as their own
Hahaha yes I love them so much, their wars on what accent their children are going to have
@@SuzLa1While she was born before the turn of the century, (and as a result, when Australia was a still a colony) I think you'll find that her childhood and resulting inspiration are from when Australia was a newly federated nation.
As "Saving Mr Banks" shows, Pamela Travers grew up in 1900s Australia. Australia was federated in 1901 and the childhood flashbacks depict a Queensland and Victoria of around 1906. A little background knowledge.
SusieLa1 Really?? Sure they weren’t Disney’s to begin with but Disney doesn’t claim them as their own, they just bring the stories to life, just like they did with Mary Poppins. Disney’s take on Mary Poppins allowed more children to grow up with and enjoy the story. Saying that they just stole the stories is sad :(
I may have overreacted but I gotta defend Disney where it’s due
So you’re Mary Poppins, how the heck did that happen?
Emily Blunt: W h e e z e

God he was a good interviewer.. his questions were new and inventive.. I want to see more of his interviews
A lot of remakes / sequels piss me off.... This one made me thoroughly happy and impressed!
Same I actually want to go and see it again.
Tsk tsk tsk just lay off the curse words Ms.Poppins may wash your mouth out with soap
So often I click just because of the interviewer, but when I love both, it is such a delight and feel good moments.
Emily Blunt is practically perfect in every way.
He is my favorite interviewer. It's just so effortless. 💜
You don't need the clickbait. The interview was too good for the horrible title.
It wasn't click bait they mention every thing in the title in the interview
Still, the title will atract people who hated the film and are looking for validation.
Clickbait doesn't have to be untrue in order to be misleading.
I liked the flim btw, not as good as the original, but certainally not "a huge mistake".
What a utterly charming interview! Emily IS MARY POPPINS! I’ve already seen it twice! I loved this film as a child, Julie Andrews is a goddess! The only thing Emily didn’t bring to the roll is the vocal soprano range Julie has.
Michael which sucks because she totally has the pipes for it! I wish the score went a bit higher too.
A bit more than that.
I loved her in this! What lacked for me is the music. I still sing songs to myself from the first film, but could not even say the title to one of the songs from #2.
Sarah Dee “All” the songs from the first film are deeply seated in my musical brain! So agree! I do love the haunting quality of Michael’s song - but you are correct, their melodic lines, nor the words are jumping out at me.
@@1960mikey Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
I could listen to her talk everyday.
EmviloriamE so could I!
I defo could
I saw the film yesterday and it is practically perfect in every way. Thank you Ali for a fabulous interview!
Best interview by far!! Natural and humorous interviewer and some really interesting and quirky questions that set it apart from the rest. So glad I found this!!
I saw the film this evening. Practically perfect in every way. Love Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins. What an outstanding movie.
I loved this version of Mary Poppins! Emily made such a good Mary and she seems so nice and sweet and caring
alright but can we cast emily as james bond already
I put my money for it
She was perfect for the role of Mary Poppins. Loved her in the role.
Oh my gosh....such a magical movie. She was fabulous in the movie. Me and my granddaughter want to see it again!
The Cover Is Not the Book was my favourite scene❤️
Same!!! The whole sequence with the dance and the story telling were amazing. Lin's rap and the penguins...I'm in love. 😍
Same

Wow, what an amazing interviewer. Top notch. I really enjoyed that and his brilliant questons!
Sorry but I think the backdrop is gorgeously distracting.
The british are so much better with interviews.
Except for when they interview politicians we have seen.
Yes! Daisy Ridley is also very simpathic!
With me,I'd be a nervous wreck
better than who? what about the british people that suck with interviews? do they not count?
Prince Andrew....
"trying to submarine any fear" what a fantastic phrase.
This video fills my heart with joy I don’t ever want it to stop
Why the headline 'I've made a huge mistake' hate it when media does this just to catch attention in a negative way. Good interview though entertaining. Just seen the picture thought it was wonderful definitely will go and see it again.
"I quite agree!"
This was the best interview I think I have ever seen. Both were practically perfect in every way.
Is it just me or I think Mary Poppins studied at Beauxbaton Academy.
But she would go to hogwarts woudn't she?
But I get where your coming from
That’s French isn’t it
lets draw 24 yup
@@nehatripathi8353 where you're coming from. Yes!
I could imagine her being a professor there
Awwwww when they were talking about Van Dyke.... "He is magical"." People are looking at me thinking how I am still alive!"
No one can do Bert better than Dick Van Dyke! period, end of story, goodbye, the end
She’s the perfect Mary Poppins😍
Emily has a great connection with that guy. I loved the movie 🍿 xx
This interviewer has a great chemistry with every single celebrity he interviews!! It's refreshing, really, to see someone so genuine and laid back with guests, conversing with them like he would with anyone else.
americans want to sound like brits trying to sound like american 😂
That's basically Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes.
@@pegasusdrive12 his accent wasn't to bad
@Varel Leona your cute you must have sexy Arch feet huh
@@pegasusdrive12 i think his accent was good. I know a British person who thought he was british for a long time.
I'm British and I found it obvious he was American. #hamifan
British interviewers are the best!
Mary Poppins was my 1st movie experience as a child. I was 5 when it came out. I remember the forecourt of the theater, the dress inward wearing. I had everything Mary Poppins. Books, soundtrack album, the Mary Poppins doll! I love Emily, but I'm still wary of seeing her in the role. In the clips her voice sounds like the great Julie Andrews. I also LOVE Dick Van Dyke. And am so happy he is in the film. I may have to break down and watch it.
Lovely interview!
Loved this interview..Love Emily Blunt....great actress
Well, it's simple. You're going to do MP Returns Returns, MP Returns Returns Returns....
She did such a great job in the movie!!
"Mary Poppins Returns Again"!
What an entertaining interview! Really great! She’s so fabulous! Thrilled to have also discovered you!
I live Lin's bike. I have a chopper but holy heck I love that bike
This was lovely :) Thank you very much ♡
I absolutely loved this movie......happy, joyful feeling.....Bravo Emily Blunt and Dick Van Dyke 👏👏👏
Emily Blunt is the perfect Mary Poppins❤
I love her voice .. her accent actually... everything I guess
Great interview. You prepared well for it, and Emily was at ease ... Thanks.
She’s so beautiful and talented. 💖🎭🎶 She looks gorgeous as a brunette and blonde.
💃🏿💃🏼👗🖤🌟🥰 Julie Andrew’s is a classic talent and beauty as well. 💖
I'm watching this movie with my mom this evening, I remember the magic of watching the first movie when I was a little girl, so I'm excited to see this one :)
I can't wait for this film 💖💖💖
Mary Poppins returns is the best sequal ive ever seen,,Much better than the original,, WELL DONE EMILY BLUNT ! FAB
Emily Blunt is an absolute delight ❤
Emily Blunt is one of the best actors of our time and yes that includes Meryl Streep!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Emily Blunt is a much needed refreshing actress in the world of lacking actors we have now 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Emily, I absolutely adore you and thank you for being in our films and our minds and our hearts 👍
I can't give you enough thumbs up and damn the critics that say any different 👍❤👍❤👍❤👍❤👍❤👍
This is brilliant! Thanks, Ali x
What a great interviewer, what great questions, and what a fun exchange to watch!
Emily Blunt is one of the best actresses of the 21st century!
Serious, serious talent! :)
I absolutely ADORE Emily Blunt!
I enjoyed this interview!
Ali is delightful And I adore Emily
"Mary Poppins Returns (2018)"... In bloody Australia we don't get the bloody movie until bloody 2019... ugh... (apologies, that was a lot 😂)
Tahlia Evans didn’t see it till today!!!!
The author of Mary Poppins was Australian originally, and this is how they treat us!
@@emmalisatilli9784 I saw it on new years day and I've seen it 3 times since then
Same thing here in France... or later... the subtitles!
I was soooo sceptical about a remake of Mary poppies as the original is just so perfect, but Emily did SUCH a fabulous job
Emily is insanely talented
Emily Blunt is indeed the best fit for the remake of this wonderful classic. Love her! I enjoyed this video. Cheers from the Philippines!
I love Emily Blunt!
Excellent interview.
I've never seen the movie, but Emily 💗 is such a good actress. I loved her in The Devil wears Prada 👠 great film
Best interview ever.
5:22 my favorite moment of that movie
bbc 1 does the best interviews with everyone. every interviewer does their research and sees the actors/musicians as people, not just famous spectacles.
Well that was plumdiddlyuptious, what a awesome interviewer! And charming interviewee it must be said. So I have. Is he this good with everyone?
Scrumdiddlyumptious
@@aviezerscop401 That word comes from Roald Dahl, doesn't it?
@@Lucy-zl8ly it does, indeed.
He is THAT good with everyone.
Just imagine Emily Blunt going back home and her family asks:
Family: How was your day Emily?
Emily: I dAnCeD wItH pEnGuInS
Grate interview, the best
I absolutely loved the costumes in this movie
I don't know you (sorry,no offense meant ) (How British of me!).....but your Emily Blunt interview may be the BEST interview I have ever seen. You were smart and prepared and both of you seemed at ease. You asked things I WOULD want to learn.....smart and great fun. I subscribed and I will be watching more. Good going Ali!
This may be the most delightful interview that I have ever watched! Ali Plumb's questions are practically perfect in every way as are Ms. Blunt's responses! (The only problem: Green Day are American? Next you will tell me that Tinkerbell can't fly! No!)
I love Emily Blunt, i get why Disney choose her as Mary Poppins, but i cant help to wonder how if Disney continue the tradition of casting a stage actress as Mary just like what Walts Disney did with Julie Andrews and cast Laura Michelle Kelly (the original west end Mary Poppins) instead
Andy Wijaya oh my god i loved her in Goddes!! She would have been amazing
She is a stage actress. Emily started on stage. Where have you been?
Thanks for a great interview! I so agree with Emily Blunt's approach of "who cares, just do it!".
What a wonderful interview not like the rubbish questions you can see everyday on TV
he is my favourite interview !
Wonderful interviewer!
This was delightful!
just watched it with my family 100%%
Yes, that was an awesome movie! Loved it! :)
Well i might be the only child in iraq who saw mary poppins the original (i didnt live in homeland at that time) and i loved mary poppins alot and the reference now as i am watching her return (27 years old) almost made me tear ....nowhere to go but up~♡
And mary now i am a doctor saving lives☺
BEST EMILY BLOUNT MARY POPPINS INTERVIEW I WATCHED!!!! 🌟 🌂 ❤️
Once my acting group put on a play of Mary Poppins and I got to play Mary Poppins and my friend was Jane Banks it was so fun
The way she looks at him at 8:30 she’s so funny/dorky yet charming. Chahming I mean.
100% the best interviewer!!
"I thought Green Day were British" as a Green Day fan, this is a hard same HAHAHAHA
the boy that played George banks is my friend I haven't seen him in a while and I really wanna know how he liked it
It's a brilliant movie. I liked it better than the original 🙈 only by a smidgen :)
She done a good job as Mary Poppins. The movie soundtrack was awesome!
This interview was a lot longer than it needed to be.
I was told when I auditioned for the show Rent that when I sang i sounded British and the director who was my prof didn't like it. But the reason American singers sound British many times when we sing is that some of the sounds we make sort of gets away from you when you sing. If I remember right the R sound is hard so when I was studying my teacher had me make it sound almost like the Ah sound. I've been told that I don't have that American southern accent and that's because it's been trained out of me
I've never seen the original, but I'd like to see this.
I'm crying at all of her nicknames for her meryl hahahaha
What a nice interview
Emily is beautiful
Isn’t it funny that all those years ago Emily was a supporting character in Devil Wears and in Poppind Merly makes a cameo😊
I haven’t seen the movie yet but I already know it’s gonna be GOOD
