Wow so much triggering going on in the comments 😂 Non-blacks have no right to say "appreciate the fact that black superheroes exist!" That's what they said in 40s when racial stererotypes dominated black representation across all media. "You're getting representation, appreciate it!" I'm not black but I see the problem. I'm not a fan of diversity for the sake of diversity but a guy like Hawkman should have been black from the get-go. I've never really thought about it until this video but I totally agree. You got good stuff here! Keep it up!
@@whosaidthat84 Oh definitely. I have several videos on race and comics. I think racism in comics isn't discussed properly, that's why I do videos like this. They go under the radar tho. Smh
Hawkman doesn't need to be anything except what he was originally created as. Blue Marvel could use a movie, John Stewart, Static Shock, Icon, Black Lightning, a better Cyborg instead of that mopey mess, we got a long list of originals waiting to be seen while white directors keep feeding people this nonsense.
This was REALLY good. Thoroughly researched (though I was surprised to see Samuel L. Jackson mentioned as there already was a Black version of Nick Fury in the Marvel Ultimates comics line.) I do have a question that I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction of: the video mentioned racist comic editors and store-owners who didn't want Black characters in their books or on their shelves. What is a good source where I can find more info on this? (I know about racist characterizations of Black comic characters, but didn't know about this.)
Thanks for the positive feedback. I was aware of Samuel Jackson being race swapped that was in Ultimates vol 1 issue 1. He was the jump off for popularizing race swapping in comics.
For more history on racist comic editors and distributors one reference would be the book Milestone Comics and their fans by Jeffrey A Brown. Most editors wouldn't come right out and admit it but giving the racial climate of pre civil rights America its an easy concept to grasp. Much love and respect 🙌 to you. Thanks for your comment

Blacks had their own designated bathrooms, water fountains, restaurant tables and so forth. A black man would get beat down if dared go near the white section. So it's pretty easy to surmise that comic stores (in certain areas) didn't want black heroes on their shelves.

He does have a point that Hawkman has Egyptian roots, however, Black people don’t acknowledge the fact that only some ancient Egyptians were Black. There were *some Black Egyptians and pharaohs because of mingling with the Kush Kingdom. For that reason, I don’t think this C list character NEEDS to be Black. I’d rather focus on Black characters getting films than the validation of Black actors being traditionally white characters.
Most of Egypt was black until Alexander the Great. Greece was too. Stop letting these white folks claim literally everything except “Sub Saharan Africa”. They have the most backward, illegitimate perspective of history.
You very correct. Ppl telling me that Egyptians were white like I didn't research or have any extensive knowledge of African mythology and history and comics. Smh. The dynastic period of Egyptian was multi cultural but definitely black. The concept of "whiteness" in terms of race didn't exist during that time. Race classifications of white and black skin was popularized and developed during the 17th century throughout America and Europe. Hawkman being "black" or of African heritage makes more sense than a blonde haired white man from a historical POV. But what do I know, I've just been studying comics and history for 25 plus years. -Cytonius
Compared to other race swaps Hawkman "needs to be race swapped?" So the other race swaps were completely unnecessary pandering. But why stop there? If this character and comic books in general are so steeped in racism cancel all these characters. Have them erased, reimagined as black, anything non-white. Not as allies either, black or non-white. We all know that claiming to be an ally is problematic and letting historical oppressors hide behind whiteness. By the way many of the actual people from Egypt, including their most famous leaders were caucasians, not just African, north African. These "whites", contributed to the culture and art of Egypt. Cleopatra and all her lineage were if Macedonian and Greek heritage. I get it your schtick is coming at ya from an edgy, keeping it real black angle but it's still lame as hell. So stop arbitrarily claiming ethnic ownership and preaching your half-baked historical bullshit. Bottom line "Hawkman" has a history from comic books period. The way people identify with him, his character has always been from.....the comic books.
