Absolutely do this. Even if you don't want to use drugs; they are not necessary. Have a couple of beers or do it stone sober; either way, this is the best way to listen to Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, or The Wall as whole albums straight through. Just make sure you are relaxed and have no distractions... your mind will notice things in many of the songs you just don't pick up otherwise. Most of their songs contain far more than the melody and beat that are easy to hear and follow.

I love how people ( especially the youngsters) all have the same experience when listening to Pink Floyds Comfortly Numb, and everyone does the same head gestures and movements when David Gilmour starts the heavy showering of guitar notes and riffs on that last solo. Ok, here's the deal with pink Floyd. I think a lot of Floyd fans would agree with this statement. Their music wasn't meant to be listened to one song at a time. They are meant to be listened to one album at a time. The Wall, Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, they're best when you listen to the whole album through first. Almost every song flows into the next song flawlessly. Tho I will say when listening to The Wall it's best to watch the movie The Wall since all the songs are on the movie and its put together better that way.

To give you the full story here: Pink Floyd were touring to support their "Animals" album when during one show Bass player Roger Waters spat at a fan and shocked by his own behavior an idea began to form in his head.
So after the tour ended and the band came together to discuss concepts for their next album, Waters presented them with two ideas: the first "The Pros and cons of Hitchhiking" and the second "Bricks in the wall" which was about how rock stars end up completely isolated from normal everyday life as if there was this huge wall between the band and the audience.
The others of the band, who all felt the same way about the music business and identified with their bass player's feelings went with the second concept and they started developing it to include an actual wall being built on the stage to hide the band from view.
In the story of "The Wall" the song "Comfortably numb" is about our rock star being found in a cardiac arrest, in his hotel room by his manager. Which is a problem: the show has been booked and the Rock Star HAS to play the show, cardiac arrest or not. There is so much money at stake that cancelling the show would be a no-go.
So the verses of "Hello, is there anybody in there?" is the doctor who brings him back from the brink of death. But this doctor is not a good Samaritan, he too is part of the music industry who's paycheck relies on the Rock Star's ability to play the show. So after administering him the adrenaline that brings him back the doctor goes "can you stand up? I do believe it's working, good, that will keep you going for the show, come on it's time to go!"
The chorus of "There is no pain you are receding." is our rock star in near death state, tranquil, he sees his life flashing by, being reminded of his childhood, looking back into he truly is but as he is brought back, he once again has the wall closing in around him.
So no matter what people tell you about this song being about shooting up and getting high, nope it's not about that at all, it actually is way darker.

Pink has quite a few of those. If you want to treat yourself, when ever you want to react to another Floyd song, which I highly suggest you do, see if there is a live version from the Pulse Tour.
EDIT after watching: I could write an entire essay commenting on your reaction, but let me make it short. Pink Floyd is a very emotional Band and David Gilmour, the lead guitarist/Singer, is a multi-instrumental God. Just lay back, close your eyes and chill to those tunes man.

  • @TheFireMonkey
    @TheFireMonkey 4 роки тому +14

This song is actually a part of The Wall which was a concept album so each song is a part of a bigger story. This song is the point that "Pink" [the name being given to the performer] has become so depressed that he shuts down totally but the band doctor is trying to get him in shape to get on stage and so he pumps him full of who knows what to get him up and functioning after a fashion.
The whole album is about the pressures of everything driving a performer into a mental breakdown and how society and the people who "discovered" the band and have a financial stake in them are driving the whole process. It also takes a deep look at prejudice and hate and how that burdens us, etc.
I have the whole album on my phone and when I am going out to run errands and will be out for several hours I often listen to it [I do have other playlists for when I'm in other moods] so I have heard the whole album more times than I can count.

I've carried this song as one of my favorites throughout my life. When I was 13 I had meningitis and nearly died from it. The fever was high enough to start killing brain cells and led to permanent brain damage and it really screws more with my emotions. I also end up hearing shit randomly that's not there. Anyway, I remember laying in the hospital bed just accepting death and injected with so many different drugs and painkillers that I myself became "comfortably numb". The room was huge and I was tiny, the room was tiny and I was huge, the weirdest in and outs I can remember just laying there helpless and hopeless to stop any of what was happening. I'm so glad i've survived and now i'm 26 and enjoying myself. I still hear this song and I can't help but to cry a little knowing what I went through.

I was obsessed with Pink Floyd as a teenager thanks to my dad. Even knowing the back story for the song back then... it always resonated with me about mental health. at least back then... it was a lot of getting you on meds to make you less of a problem to be around rather than actually treating mental illness or talking about it even. And Comfortably Numb is always how I describe what depression feels like for me, most of the time it isn't sorrow or even sadness... it's just nothing. it's being comfortably numb. You know you are fading away but you don't care enough to do anything about it.

I've been listening to Floyd since 1973 and I'm not gonna lie, Great Gig in the Sky still brings tears to my eyes sometimes. I don't think that happens, because the song is about dying. I think I've always vaguely understood that the entire album is about the human condition and what it means to be a human being. It's about birth, fear, love, hate, greed, joy, loneliness, beauty, ugliness, sadness, happiness, madness, life and death. I understand that death is an inevitable part of life. So, it's not the thought of dying that gets to me. I think Great Gig occasionally brings tears to my eyes, because it's so beautiful and Clare Torry sang it with such passion. The fact that the vocals are wordless, goes well with the theme of the album, which is universal to all of us, because we all live and we will all die someday. No words are needed to convey the passion of life as it passes into the void of death and the universal struggle to hold onto life as long as we can. It's something that we will all experience, no matter what native tongue we speak. It's hard to imagine someone not connecting with the emotion of the song, once they understand that the song is about all that we have ever been in the past, all that we have become in the present and everything we will never be again, after we are gone. And the song says all of that, without anyone uttering a single word. It's pretty amazing.

Also, the only ”real” way to really get into Pink Floyd is to listen to a complete album on vinyl in really good speakers or headphones (stereo/surround sound of course) and just drift away in the weird and trippy, yet beautifully arranged music. I would recommend The Wall, Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here (in that order!) to start with!🤘🏻

This song is when Pinky finds out his wife is seeing another man. He was on tour in America while she stayed in London, he calls a man answers and hangs up, he falls to the floor in pain. This act was the final brick that made him put up the wall. The wall is what we all put up to protect ourselves a defense mechanism, Comfortably numb is when he ODs and their trying to revive him. He's so fuked up, he comfortably numb. Great movie. When you understand what the Wall is? You see in his life how it was made and who helped build it.
