When I was 14, my dad told me "lay on your bed, turn off the lights and put Darkside of the moon. You can thank me later". And maaaan, I didn't need any drugs to feel every little thing that record has. If you can, do it, it feels amazing. Not only Darkside, all the Pink floyd's records are amazing. Absolutely do this. Even if you don't want to use drugs; they are not necessary. Have a couple of beers or do it stone sober; either way, this is the best way to listen to Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, or The Wall as whole albums straight through. Just make sure you are relaxed and have no distractions... your mind will notice things in many of the songs you just don't pick up otherwise. Ok, here's the deal with pink Floyd. I think a lot of Floyd fans would agree with this statement. Their music wasn't meant to be listened to one song at a time. They are meant to be listened to one album at a time. The Wall, Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, they're best when you listen to the whole album through first. Almost every song flows into the next song flawlessly. Tho I will say when listening to The Wall it's best to watch the movie The Wall since all the songs are on the movie and its put together better that way.

    • @vsGoliath96

Couldn't agree more. To this day, I have never found an album with more perfect flow from one song to another than DSotM. To give you the full story here: Pink Floyd were touring to support their "Animals" album when during one show Bass player Roger Waters spat at a fan and shocked by his own behavior an idea began to form in his head.
So after the tour ended and the band came together to discuss concepts for their next album, Waters presented them with two ideas: the first "The Pros and cons of Hitchhiking" and the second "Bricks in the wall" which was about how rock stars end up completely isolated from normal everyday life as if there was this huge wall between the band and the audience.
The others of the band, who all felt the same way about the music business and identified with their bass player's feelings went with the second concept and they started developing it to include an actual wall being built on the stage to hide the band from view.
In the story of "The Wall" the song "Comfortably numb" is about our rock star being found in a cardiac arrest, in his hotel room by his manager. Which is a problem: the show has been booked and the Rock Star HAS to play the show, cardiac arrest or not. There is so much money at stake that cancelling the show would be a no-go.
So the verses of "Hello, is there anybody in there?" is the doctor who brings him back from the brink of death. But this doctor is not a good Samaritan, he too is part of the music industry who's paycheck relies on the Rock Star's ability to play the show. So after administering him the adrenaline that brings him back the doctor goes "can you stand up? I do believe it's working, good, that will keep you going for the show, come on it's time to go!"
The chorus of "There is no pain you are receding." is our rock star in near death state, tranquil, he sees his life flashing by, being reminded of his childhood, looking back into he truly is but as he is brought back, he once again has the wall closing in around him.
So no matter what people tell you about this song being about shooting up and getting high, nope it's not about that at all, it actually is way darker.

Pink has quite a few of those. If you want to treat yourself, when ever you want to react to another Floyd song, which I highly suggest you do, see if there is a live version from the Pulse Tour.
EDIT after watching: I could write an entire essay commenting on your reaction, but let me make it short. Pink Floyd is a very emotional Band and David Gilmour, the lead guitarist/Singer, is a multi-instrumental God. Just lay back, close your eyes and chill to those tunes man.

This song is actually a part of The Wall which was a concept album so each song is a part of a bigger story. This song is the point that "Pink" [the name being given to the performer] has become so depressed that he shuts down totally but the band doctor is trying to get him in shape to get on stage and so he pumps him full of who knows what to get him up and functioning after a fashion.
The whole album is about the pressures of everything driving a performer into a mental breakdown and how society and the people who "discovered" the band and have a financial stake in them are driving the whole process. It also takes a deep look at prejudice and hate and how that burdens us, etc.
I have the whole album on my phone and when I am going out to run errands and will be out for several hours I often listen to it [I do have other playlists for when I'm in other moods] so I have heard the whole album more times than I can count.

This song is when Pinky finds out his wife is seeing another man. He was on tour in America while she stayed in London, he calls a man answers and hangs up, he falls to the floor in pain. This act was the final brick that made him put up the wall. The wall is what we all put up to protect ourselves a defense mechanism, Comfortably numb is when he ODs and their trying to revive him. He's so fuked up, he comfortably numb. Great movie. When you understand what the Wall is? You see in his life how it was made and who helped build it.

I was obsessed with Pink Floyd as a teenager thanks to my dad. Even knowing the back story for the song back then... it always resonated with me about mental health. at least back then... it was a lot of getting you on meds to make you less of a problem to be around rather than actually treating mental illness or talking about it even. And Comfortably Numb is always how I describe what depression feels like for me, most of the time it isn't sorrow or even sadness... it's just nothing. it's being comfortably numb. You know you are fading away but you don't care enough to do anything about it.

""After “Bring the Boys Back Home” there is a short piece where a tape loop is used; the teachers voice is heard again and you can feel the groupie saying “Are you feeling okay?” and there’s the operator saying, er, “There’s a man answering” and there’s a new voice introduced at that point and there’s somebody knocking on the door saying “Come on, it’s time to go,” right, so the idea is that they are coming to take him to the show because he’s got to go and perform that night, and they come into the room and they realise something is wrong, and they actually physically bring the doctor in, and “Comfortably Numb” is about his confrontation with the doctor.

That guitar is like human soul crystallised. I haven't listened to Floyd for like a decade and I'm going through their albums again. Incredible what a handle they had on the human pulse.

I"m glad I saw your video. I'm also glad you read what the song was about before you listened.. However, you did listen to the tune out of context so you don't know the import of what's going on, other than the overdosing guy getting a shot of something good to help him make it through the show. I'm going to watch more of your Pink Floyd videos to see if you listen to the whole band.
I haven't listened to Floyd since this album came out. I was working at Disneyland and we would go out after our shifts and listen to the album from beginning to end. ... until I got burned out.
I got back into Floyd a couple months ago when Us and Them (from Dark Side of the Moon) came on and I suddenly got an urge to pick up the saxophone again and play it as the sun sets at Burning Man.
    TMI.
Enjoyed the video. Going to watch another now.

Comfortably Numb is one of the songs my grandparents want on their funerals. I decided to tattoo the first line "hello, is there anybody in there" on my chest, above my heart. If they pass away, they'll still be in my heart. The question "hello, is there anybody in there" could be answered

Watch the film version. Puts everything into context and you get to listen to the whole album. Been listening to Pink Floyd since I was a tot in the 80's, my dad was OBSESSED. These were my lullabies. 😌

Being 51 years old, I remember hearing this as a young lad and was AMAZED and still am. David Gilmore does not plug his guitar in an amp, he plugs in directly to his soul. Now, go back and listen to Dark Side of the Moon...and do not stop or pause it. Floyd music us designed to listen to all at once, it is an experience. You now have now witnessed the greatest group of all times.

I love pink floyd my dad got me into these guys when I was young hearing the guitar riff and solo just sends me back to the days watching my dad work on cars and playing pink floyd on the car stereo

Another one of my favorite bands. I did get to see them live once, many years ago during their Animals tour. They were great. Pink Floyd is a major mind blowing experience without even taking drugs, at least I think so, but then again I am not sure I ever really listened to more than one Pink Floyd song without drugs, so I can't be sure... Headphones and laying back in a dark room is the best way to listen to this band. It will take your mind to places you could only have imagined in your dreams or on SERIOUS drugs. TMI?
