    "Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?" Hands down one of my favorite lyrics in any song ever. So powerful.

    • @treebeardstudios
      @treebeardstudios Рік тому +1

      @@justchilling177 So, I'm going to be very okay with people correcting me on this one. Here are some points to help explain my view.
      1. The whole album "Wish You Were Here" (Welcome to the Machine, Have a Cigar, etc.) talks about the soullessness of the music industry.
      2. Roger Waters said this song was based on a poem he wrote about Syd Barrett (Pink Floyd's first singer and primary songwriter) losing touch with reality.
      3. Barrett got pretty deep into drugs but Waters' thinks he was already kind of messed up in the head.
      Anyway, all that being said, what that line means to me is that Barrett signed on to be a part of the "machine" music industry and ended up stuck in a mental prison. The war being the struggle a band goes through to even get into the industry and make a living.
      I'm probably not explaining as well as I'd like so if anyone else has a different interpretation have at it please, but that's always what that line has meant to me.

      @scbl46 Рік тому +3

      @@treebeardstudiosI like your thinking, but I think it can be applied more generally to just success and power. The more successful you become, the more everyone tries to micromanage every little thing that you do. So you have the wealth and power (lead role) but lose your freedom (cage) in the process. On the flip side, the less successful and powerful you are, the more you start to blend in with the crowd, essentially no one gives a shit what you do. So then you are just an average person, like everybody else (walk-on part), having to fight your way through the struggles of life (war) that a person with lots of wealth and influence would be able to navigate with ease.
      TLDR: By gaining money and power, you are trading your freedom for an easy life

      Seriously, do this! Set aside enough time to go through the whole album. Put your phone in airplane mode. Use the bathroom beforehand. Get a comfy chair and a cool drink. Put on the headphones, and listen to Dark Side, front to back, in one stream. 47 years later, this album still holds up. There's a reason it was on the Billboard top 200 albums chart for 741 weeks in a row, from 1973 to 1988. Try to imagine any of today's music still being on the charts 15 years from now.

    A lot of people are crying out "Ya gotta hear the whole album non-stop!"
    While there is truth to that, keep in mind that we were all exposed to these songs via FM radio one at a time. It was only after hearing some of the songs that we bought the albums and played them through beginning to end. It's all good. One at a time works here. Just take some time of your own to play them through when not doing reviews. Enjoy.
    Peace. Let the music play.

      True, mostly.
      I actually hadn't listen to any of the Dark Side's songs before listening to the album entirely in one run.
      I loved the experience and I wish I did it with the other albums too.

    • @chrisjenkins963
      @chrisjenkins963 4 роки тому +1

      What? That isn’t true at all. They played more than half the album in sequence at the Knebworth festival in July 1975, months ahead of the album’s release and circulated bootlegs like crazy. The hype following Dark Side’s release had them selling so many albums in advance that they couldn’t even fulfill them all. It was Pink Floyd’s fastest-selling album.
      The album didn’t even have a single released until two months after the album dropped, “Have a Cigar” in November “75. it wasn’t like most albums today where singles promote an album.

    The real trick to appreciating Pink Floyd is to listen to the whole album in one sitting. There's nothing wrong with going one at a time but the albums (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall) were written and recorded with an arc that can only be understood as a set. In case you wanna continue reacting to them:
    - Time
    - Echoes
    - Dogs
    - Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Pts. I-V
    - Hey You
    And if you still wanna go on:
    - Us and Them
    - Brain Damage / Eclipse
    - Atom Heart Mother
    - High Hopes
    - Pigs (Three Different Ones)
    - Sheep
    - Mother
    - Goodbye Blue Sky
    - Welcome to the Machine
    - Have a Cigar
    - Fearless
    - One of These Days
    However if you wanna start listening to Pink Floyd, I would recommend listening to the albums from start to finish, as Pink Floyd doesn't produce sole songs as such, but they produce albums, the best of which are The Wall, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Dark Side of the Moon and Meddle.

    You hit the sentiment right on the head. This whole album was a tribute to Syd. The comment you made about being alone is exactly how they feel around Std. As you may or may not know, Syd pretty much fried his mind from too many divulgences into to "mind altering substances" and never recovered. There is a atory about Syd visiting the studio when they were working on Shine on you crazy diamond. He just sat in the corner without any knowledge of where he was at, or whom was there with him. This song was a product of that encounter.

You will no longer exist in any form in this world. So get out there. Connect with the people you care about. Make that number a big one. I agree with so many of the other comments, "Dark Side Of The Moon", "Wish You Were Here", "The Wall" & "Animals" should always be listened to in their entirety. I know that can be hard for a reactor to do, time wise. So maybe choose a few from each album, listen to them, then you sit down with your headphones on & listen to them yourself. They really will blow you away, Alex. I would recommend for individual songs,

    I'm honestly surprised this is only your 2nd PF song. You got a lot of catching up to do! As many others will tell you, MOST Pink Floyd albums are meant to be listened to as a complete work...I say most, because the stuff that really forms the core of their catalog (Meddle through The Wall, in my opinion) is just the most amazingly composed soundscapes. The Floyd didn't write "hit singles" - though they ended up becoming superstars on the back of the song "Money."
    Amazon Prime currently has the "Classic Albums" series of videos up for streaming, and I cannot recommend the one about the making of Dark Side Of the Moon enough. It's incredible to hear the story of the album told through their eyes and ears. Well worth watching!
    Some suggestions - "Echoes" (the album version), "Dogs," "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" - hell, the entire "Animals" album alone will keep you busy for days. I'm not saying you can't react to individual songs, but I'd definitely do them in succession to get the flow. Cheers, Alex! Keep on cranking them out!

      That is one of the only songs from The Final Cut that I enjoy in its entirety. The Final Cut is by all accounts a good album, but I don’t think that it holds up to many of the ones that came before. Even after Roger left, they still continued to produce quality music. A Momentary Lapse of Reason is not a masterpiece, but still contains some of their best work; Learning to Fly and Sorrow. And The Division Bell is great from start to finish.
