The Leviathan in Scripture: Ouroboros Symbolism

  • The Leviathan is a strange creature in the Bible and tradition. In this video I look at the Leviathan, the sea serpent, the dragon, and its relationship to the devil, and how al of these associations came to be what they can mean. And also it can help us understand how symbolism can be polyvalent that is that symbolism can have multiple meanings at the same time, and that understanding those multiple meanings can also help us understand how symbolism works and then also help us understand the specific meanings that are attributed to each symbol and the leviathan.

Same here, and this video makes me feel better about a rather large never ending story influenced tattoo I have on my leg. The story of Jonah is one that's always stuck with me from childhood, and as a recently chrismated Orthodox Christian, the harrowing of hell is a favorite icon and part of theology for me. Symbolism runs so deep, I hope these are the aspects I was connecting with the whole time.

As G.K. Chesterton once said, one’s tail is “quite an unsatisfactory meal.” This is both funny and insightful, as it points to the truth that self-referential activity is synonymous with self-negation, the loss of true selfhood through self-devouring.
“The fool folds his hands and eats his own flesh.” Ecclesiastes 4:5
In truth, identity consists not in self-consumption, but in communion with God.

At one point in my life, contemplating the Opus's ( against ) purpose in existence and its role in our deification, I was looking out the kitchen window and inadvertently touched the broom and it fell and thus I realized it apparently split the kitchen floor in two. That event generated a series of understandings regarding the duality of the serpent that culminated in a vision. I was between wakefulness and sleep, and suddenly I saw how in a dark space there was an opening like a square-shaped pit, a kind of square well where there was clean water and which was too deep for me to understand it. While admiring its cleanliness I noticed a fish tail and wanted to see it better. And suddenly what appeared to be a fish turned and a golden dragon appeared and came out of the water and approached me but with half-opened, almost closed eyes. I wanted to see the eyes and the golden dragon came closer to my face and opened its eyes a little wider but it was looking down and I saw for a second that the eyes were electric, like lightning and immediately after, the dragon retreated and went back into clean water.
    Thank you!

The ouroboros surrounding the tree when connected to the tree of knowledge in eden and the image of jerusalem as a wall around eden is interesting. The leviathan, itself, is a creature made up of all these parts, which suggests that it isn't just a creature, it's a creature of separate interacting pieces. I've often thought that God can't really be contained in prophets, or the christ, because God is active in the world through many small events and in relationship. God is a whole story, not an individual piece of creation that is acting in a moment of time. In the end, humanity has taken knowledge and become leviathan. We consume ourselves in order to grow.

The richness of symbolism in the Bible and all the interrelatedness is what shattered my previous skepticism. I also gained a lot out of Jung's Aion (I think the deepest work ever written outside the Bible). The symbol of the serpent upon the tree is one of the most profound. I am blown away at how it relates to the transformation of oppositional chaos at the cross. It shifts it by turning it into surrendered potential through the highest sacrifice, transforming sin itself into perfect identity and glory at the crucifixion. The stuff that existed before all creation is the prima materia, the power of the resurrection. Christ is at the focus of the cosmos.

They are mentioned together in places (Job), and separately, but neither is mentioned with another force comparable to either.

Circularity for me points to circular time: the reoccurrence of the catastrophe/ the cataclysm. The symbolism of death goes well with an extinction event / a near death event for human civilization itself. Not even talking about the symbols of the dragon and the lance both work as symbols for the impactor.
Edit: as for the images of the staff, the tree, the pillar (and yes: the cross): I think it might stand for the axis of the Earth, especially in depictions where the staff is at around 23 degrees. - Earth Crust displacement theories have the axis tumbling over and causing the flood. (Samson (“little Sun”) brought the Pillar down on the House. Samson’s long hair is the symbol for the active Sun / protuberances / CMEs.)
Read “Hamlet’s Mill”: Samson in chains turns the Mill (the axis), but with broken chains (and regrown hair) he tumbles the pillar and brings the house down.
(I’m following everything about the new catastrophism with great interest, and project everything I find on it: things are hard to unsee, once one starts seeing patterns. Kind of a strange attractor, I’m the moth going around the light in circles myself.)

    • @Stadtpark90
      @Stadtpark90 4 місяці тому +1

The problem is: the interpretations are endless: maybe the Snake around the Staff could also be the dying and reforming geo-magnetic field that allows the cataclysm to happen. - Or it could represent the Kuiper Belt around our planetary system that is the origin for a lot of comets (= possible impactors). Making things fit only requires some fantasy - what is a stretch, and what is not?

The healing aspect of the serpent is not fully understood as it ought to be. It's connected to the doctrine of not resisting evil. If you surrender to the destruction that evil brings into your life, in your heart, at the end of the healing process, wisdom is derived. One's soul is healed and purified through that encounter and the processing of the pain that follows. That doesn't mean condoning evil. It doesn't mean embracing evil. Nor pacifism exactly. Quite the opposite. You must discern evil. You must tell yourself the deep truth within. You must experience the devastation it brings. But at the end of the process, when it's truly done fully, and authentic forgiveness arises, the connections and reasons become clear. It points to the way that evil serves the divine plan of salvation; it serves indirectly. That's why it exists, as a catalyst of sorts.

a snake or serpent also symbolizes creation as a whole, it can be understood as any creature in relation to God, because we are potential in respect to the essential act of God.

At least if you back the God's Dog kickstarter you can add the Snow White books as add-on's after the campaign. Or if you only want the fairy tales you could wait until fall when the next fairy tale kickstarter should launch.

One of your best. Probably the best together with the Batman one. On a side note I think God gets a loud laugh whenever the secular artist type, is shown to play into a divine pattern - so I think the pattern by which a christian civilization will rise again, is by demolishing what exists now with exactly what you just described as the snake. Essentially pop art shown to submit to Christianity by combining it into a chimera.
We are in a dire necessity to integrate everything that could be possibly raised up, which is anything that shows some beautify of it's own. The device of this chimera will make all these pagan yet glorified netflix-show-kind-of-multiplicity that pulls people into cynicism, into the trick by which the fool catches on fire making everyone in the flip a Christian. The christian pattern combined with any lesser pattern, will always make the lesser pattern become almost stripped of it's impurity, while retaining some vestigial Idiosincracy. That vestige could be the redemption of even the worst sinner.

On the Anglo-Saxon Franks Casket Jonah is thrown into the mouth of a serpent whose body forms the wave shapes, likewise on the other side where the creature vomits him out. The casket's lock is in between them so it was presumably used to store a Bible/The Good News.

The Leviton is a symbol of chaos
The chaos is subservient to God
So in a way yes, Gods “pet”
Thus at the marriage supper of the Lamb, believers are served leviathan as the meal.

Hey Jonathan,,, just a thought that came to me..First I have to bring some of my personal darkness of my past, into the 'light',, by stating in my previous ignorant state of understanding death... I once believed that if I didn't make it to heaven, through my own cause of ending my life,, that I would simply end up as worm food, and no further consequences would follow,,, meaning no more pain and or suffering... With that being said,, starting around the age of 10 or 11yrs old,, and at different times of my life,, as recent being the age of 53,,, I have attempted to end my mortal life.. Today I now understand we're created for eternity,, and thank you Jesus for keeping me alive long enough for this understanding, that is allowing me up t'ill now from ending up in eternal hell... Back to my thought about the symbolism of the snake eating itself,, do you think maybe this could also relate to suicide somehow?.. The snake being shrewd with no compassion towards its own existence..?... My motive with this thought was to somehow link it with teenage suicide prevention,,, if this makes any sense...

I present another way of interpreting this symbology.
The Ouroboros is a symbol found in many different cultures, all over the world. It is found in Ancient Egyptian Culture, Ancient Greek, Gnosticism, Alchemy, Norse Mythology, Hinduism, Chinese Mythology, African Traditional Religions, Indigenous Cultures in Americas & South America.
How is it possible, this symbol is found in so many cultures separated by vast oceans? Perhaps this is because it was introduced by Fallen Angels, to teach us to accept the Cycle of Death and Rebirth or - Reincarnation.
In Christian theology, the Ouroboros is seen as Leviathan eatings its tail but no Christian would dare make this connection with reincarnation. But allow me to present a case for this from a dream i received from the Holy Spirit in the early hours of the morning. It was the last vision i saw before my eyes opened.
As Jonathan stated, if we assume Leviathan is the Snake in the Garden, and if eating from the Tree of Good and Evil introduced ‘Sin & Death’ into the lives of Adam and Eve, then it is the introduction of Sin, that caused them to fall into the material (the World & The Flesh), ensnaring them in a never-ending cycle of Death and Rebirth.
This would make Reincarnation the counterfeit form of Eternal Life, where your soul lives on forever, but is trapped in matter (The World & The Flesh) instead.
Before this fall, Adam and Eve lived in Perfection without Death. This was our birthright as long as we lived in obedience to the Will of God, and only consumed from the Tree of Life, in a realm that was specifically designed to have Free Will. But we messed it up, and now we are here.
Why is Christianity one of the only religions that does not teach Reincarnation, because it is a false promise, and God doesn't spend much time in the bible explaining why something is a lie.
Hinduism, Sikhisms, Buddhism, Kabbalah and Jewish Mysticism, Taoism, Jainism, Egyptian mysticism, Platonism and Neo-Platonism & Orphic and Pythagorean doctrines, Indigenous and Tribal Religions, even Theosophists and New Age religions all postulate the pre-existence of the soul that goes through a reincarnation after death. Why have so many groups, and religions taught this? Perhaps it pointless to argue the metaphysics but only to note the Law of Conservation which states, energy cannot be created or destroyed, so when we die, we move on... question is where?
So perhaps the teachings from these religions are not actually false doctrines, instead it exists in a paradox where it is lie and a truth at the same time, creating a loophole for it to exist. This would allow the Devil to create many false religions that teach it as a truth, but also giving us a false promise that this is our condition.
Even Messiah suggested Reincarnation twice, but only for “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” when he proclaimed John as the coming Elijah.
“He is Elijah who is to come” - Matthew 11:15
“But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not” - Matthew 17:12
How about those who would counter with John saying he was not Elijah when probed by the priests and Levites? Ask yourself, how could John have known this? Afterall, he was just a man who suffered through the same amnesia all of us go through, unlike the Christ who knew who he was, and is omniscient.
When we consider what i present here, John 14:6 now makes even more sense to those who refuse to believe the possibility of Christ being the Only way to the Father.
"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
The Way: The Narrow Path out of this trap.
The Truth: We currently exist in a False Reality (Lie), and He is the Truth.
The Life: We will not experience Death again, when we leave this world.
Perhaps the Spirit of Leviathan, consumed the World, and ‘trapped all souls in their flesh’, making this reality a prison, until a Savior arrives with the keys to Life and Death, first to free his Saints. And then to return once more to free the world, by slaying Leviathan, ending this cycle forever.
    ASH

Not necessarily an amount of time since it posed a threat, as if it had a original state of danger until humans fixed the problem. More like since humans figured out a way to weaponize the serpent for their own means.

In physics there is entropy the constant loss of order. So any thing made or beast created by order will decay. Eat it self. So man must serve the made or created to maintain it. The Idea is will man serve his own to maintain or will man serve God to maintain the things of God.
God created the days the animals and man by imposing order upon the earth and heavens that He previously created. And then God put man in charge to maintain it all. But man decided to leave that entropy override and simply get his desire. So man left life for decay and death. So man is no longer able to give order. So christ came to give access to man to regain that thru jesus. So this is about what it is that life force is. And how and what man is and for in being able to use Gods holiness And all that thru Faith in the Christ
