I don’t know… hearing your complaint that this is an overpriced Trail Boss doesn’t hold water for me. Sure, if you’re driving it around town, doing the basic mall crawl route, then I can see that being a valid complaint. But if you got the ZR2 to do what it’s designed to do, which is drive 60 mph+ on a dirt road with zero drama, or actually use the front locker for rock crawling or climbing out of mud and sand, then the TB is not going to measure up. I’m hearing the complaint from a lot of truck bros that it’s not worth the price. Well, if all you want is to drive around town with a leveling kit and bigger tires (which, btw, actually do affect your fuel economy. Unsprung mass, especially without re-gearing or adjusting the speedometer will show up as incorrect readings and underperforming acceleration), you absolutely should have just gotten a TB. But unless you’re going to use this truck for what it was engineered for, then no wonder you’re upset. It’s like buying a 911 GT3 RS to drive your kids to school then getting upset there’s no backseats.
Brah he replied to every comment except this one, you too good. And I agree. watch TFL's latest video, they use it how it was made to be used. And they thought it was one of the best all around trucks rn.
You're not entirely wrong, but this truck is built first and foremost to use as a DD. No one is buying a ZR2 and strictly using it off road. You have to factor in all the other uses for the truck and it's faults in that department, which I cover. And you'd be kinda nuts to use this truck for rock crawling considering it's small tires and low ground clearance. The lockers are awesome, no doubt, but the rest of the off road capabilities of this truck are underwhelming and way behind the competition. It's literally a Trail Boss with DSSV shocks and lockers.
As someone who has owned both the Trailboss (2020) and now the ZR2 (2023) I can assure you that the ZR2 is one bad truck. The ride is smoother and takes on trails like butter thanks to the upgrade in suspension. As for gas, no one gets performance vehicles for fuel efficiency. Test drive a new ZR2, don’t blame me when you fall in love with it 😎
I live in the country on rough roads, if it rains you need 4 wheel drive to make it to my house. I got a 22 Trailboss, 6.2 engine, 18 to 19 mpg average, I love this truck.
Thanks for honest review , I had F150 v8 , 2021 everything was fine 3 months and than I started to have all kind of warnings on display , fault ABS, pricollision alert was scary on Hwy. and so many ... Engineer from Detroit came 2 times after dealers couldn't fix it . At the end I got BBB and it was a lemon , tnx god got my money back ... never Ford again, and crap happens to all brands ....
Sir, if you paid $73k for that rig you have every right to be pissed off and disappointed with all these short comings and poor engineering. GM has gone down the toilet they're not the company they once were back in the 70's 80's 90's and early 2000's. They went down the toilet in 2007 when they introduced that GMT900 square cereal box on wheels with AFM. Cheapy made junk
I appreciate the truth you brought to this, I have had 2016 Silverado, 2019 trailboss and now a 2020 2500 ram Cummins. I have had many small issues and nobody reviewing the trucks have them long enough to notice the bugs. Thank you for bringing them to the forefront you could literally swap between all trucks and make these same videos. $$$$
Valid concerns but I want to be fair with a few things: 1. You have after market rims and tires. The tires are bigger than factory so of course you are not going to get factory rated mpg. It’s still terrible but I don’t think they were dishonest about it. 2. Fog lamps aren’t going to automatically switch to high beams because if high beams kick in it’s going to blind people and make GM liable for a crash. 3. CarPlay has always been a little slow, but I think it’s the connection rather than the software. Definitely still GM’s fault on that though.
I have the 22 refresh 6.2 trailboss but I totally agree with you on the apple car play. it seems built around googles system and my android connection is instant all the time. IMO the Zr2 is not worth the near 90k price tag from dealers when the fully loaded TB is at 65-70
The wheels are the same size and tires are only 1.5" bigger though, should effect MPG THAT much (I don't think). The high beams don't turn on unless the road is clear, that's what intellibeam is. I'm guessing CarPlay is faster when plugged in, because it was much faster in my Colorado.
@@method10410 90k? Sheesh! Where are you located? I got mine at MSRP - in fact lower with GM family discount. Fully loaded at $66k (before taxes) out the door - that’s probably lower than a trailboss fully loaded. Also, yeah mpg sucks but it’s a 6.2L V8. People worried about MPG don’t buy a V8 lol WIRELESS Car play/android auto isn’t super great in most vehicles. There’s a reason why there has been a slow adoption of it in most makes/models (latency) - I’ll say mine works fine. 2-3 seconds latency is OKAY given I don’t have to plug in my phone anymore (thank goodness).
I am so glad I watched this video, you have really opened my eyes, I was ready to pull the trigger on a zr2. No more, it's not worth it. Thank you for making this. 🤙👍
I have been a GM guy all my life, but I bought a Ford F150 Supercrew with the 3.5 twin turbo ecoboost and am very happy with it. Truck has lots of power and rides alot better than the GM pick ups i have owned.
I own a Summit White Silverado ZR2. I've had a different experience. My front camera module went out at 300 miles - it took two months for the part to come in, but now works again. I'm still waiting on heated steering, but that's minor. I subscribe to the data plan so I have the fully functioning Infotainment Center and it is AWESOME, quick and responsive. If you're buying a $75k truck, don't chimp out on a data plan. I optioned the truck with rocker protectors, sun roof, multiflex gate, and performance exhaust (made by Borla). The Borla exhaust is quite loud on cold start - I believe it's the attack version of the Borla exhaust. It has deep, muscular tones. Mine totaled $74,500. I traded my 2020 Summit White TB LT (5.3) for this ZR2 and I do not regret it. The tries aren't small; they compliment the wheel travel and designed that way. Also, I don't know how you drive your truck around, but I get 19 mpg on the highway, and 15.6 in the city. Considering its a 6.2, it gets better mpg than my TB LT. The interior is amazing - the best interior of any vehicle I've owned. The truck is a turn key solution; if you want to fuq boy your truck, yes, stick with a TB. This truck is perfect out of the gates. It is NOT the same ride height as a TB. Technically, it sits 1/2" higher. This truck is more capable than a TB, although most people wont tackle the terrain that differentiates the two trucks. The DSSV and lockers separate this truck, and those upgrades aren't cheap. This is still a version 1 tuck so be patient as GM works out the kinks. In all, I'm definitely pleased with the step up from my 2020 TB LT! High Country owners are jealous of this truck's interior. I think this truck measures up to its billing. It has tremendous curb appeal; when I leave a restaurant or store, there's a 30% chance some dude is checking out my truck. One guy even asked to see the interior.
I shouldn't have to pay extra for features each month, regardless of the cost of the vehicle IMO. I have to disagree on the tires too, 33s are TINY in today's world. Most non off road trucks come with nearly a 33 stock. I drive the truck average, I don't baby it but certainly don't drive fast everywhere. I'm hoping GM steps their game up but I really don't think they're interested in a long travel truck.
Fuel economy is largely effected by your right foot. Try to compare it to a Trail Boss lol; "nothing special about it" how many factory trucks come with a electronic front locker... I can only think of 1 other, the Power Wagon. So, 3:11 into your review, I had to stop watching because I can only handle soon much BS in a day.
I don't see the reason why you are regretting having bought it, I liked it a lot and I wouldn't change it, its off-road capabilities seem spectacular to me, with a beautiful v8 6.2
Diggin' you video. I was worried about the shock hanging too low. I do a lot of overlanding, and one reason I didn't go with the Colorado ZR2. Love the capability, but there are so many shortcomings. Holy crap 9.9mpg? That's less then my outfitted Tundra TRD Pro. What gears does the ZR2 come with? If it helps with the Wireless Apple Car play, I have that same issue when using other third party wireless Apple Car Play. I haven't and OEM wireless Apple CarPlay, so I can only speak to he third parties. Sucks that this new ZR2 came up short and frustrating. Do better Chevy. But damn, I'd love to drive that rig!
Dear followers!! Don't let the beautiful pictures confuse you . Anyone who buys a new car from GENERAL Motors the chance you threw your money into the trash is very large. In this company there is no customer service, the company's management does not care at all, if you have a problem or a malfunction, you can only pray to God there is a chance that the help will come faster. GM is a very dangerous company, be careful and keep your money safe.!!!Share so more people don't get screwed.GM is a big bluff
I've got a 2021 TrailBoss 6.2. I had to lifter issue at 1400 miles. The upside is, they replaced them all with an upgraded part. 44,500 trouble free miles since then. I dont pay for a data plan or anything, as long as I use android auto, all my maps and everything work. My heated seats and steering wheel work too. My speedo cluster is analog, no fancy digital screen, and my infotainment screen is smaller, and there's no fancy startup sequence. My average mileage is 16mpg.
Great content. Clearly they got really lazy with the Silverado ZR2. Some team put a ton of hard work into making the Colorado ZR2 Special - many different parts as you know. Then they took the ZR2 brand and just plastered it onto the big truck to make more money. Sure front locking diff, but how much did that ZR2 badge cost? Reminds me of BMW's ///M brand that used to be reserved for very special, very capable vehicles. Now they'll slap an ///M on anything if you spend enough money.... Nice E36 BTW! I used to have a 97 M3
Thanks for the video, very informative. I just recently got my hands on a trail boss, white and black like yours with the duramax. A few months ago I ordered a GMC Sierra but because of the constraints I was not getting the truck that I wanted anytime soon. My sales guy called me up and said this is what we got in now off the truck as someone opt out of their order, I felt like at this point beggars can't be choosers. I have always owned a GMC truck and to switch over to the Chevy side is a big step, it is a nice truck I admit and I certainly hope I don't have issues as GMC has always been good to me. Thanks for the reviews, hope it all works out on your end.
Thank you for making this video. Manufacturers need to calm down with their pricing. Usually when you make a video about not liking something, whole lot of people come out with their feelings hurt.
@@matt13ross I thought similar about the Tremor. I think ZR2 might still be a little better on price and equipment. Ford just has a better tech in some aspects. But definitely higher price.
Precisely why I subscribed to your channel. Everything you mentioned I have questioned and asked why GM did or didn't do these things. For the last 3 weeks, I been looking at getting rid of mine and this vid is pushing me harder to do it.
@@matt13ross I think so because the markups are so high and I have a lot of equity in it. Either way, GM could have and should have done better. Jeep 392 is on the radar.
The auto highbeams not coming on with the fog lights makes perfect sense. If you have your fog lights on they are on for a reason like fog. You don't want brights in the fog.
The real reason is that most states have laws limiting you to a maximum of "4" front facing white lights on at any given time, unless it is an emergency vehicle. The "fog" light on newer vehicles isn't even a fog light anymore. It's actually called a "driving" light. It just shines a little more light onto the road surface and out to the sides a bit. However, the driving lights are white and not yellow, which are useful in fog. So basically it's really about the law and nothing else. There is an aftermarket mod, can't remember the name of the company, but it's called the "4-hi" or "6-Hi" mod. It was basically a harness jumper that would allow you to run your brights, lows, and "driving" lights at the same time. Very useful in rural settings, but you can achieve better results with a Rough Country LED front light kit.
I have a 6.2 Trail Boss same color combo - This gives me some comparison thoughts but thank you for the content and I really like the mods you've done to yours.
Matt , leave the ZR2 sit for awhile and concentrate on the Porsche. That looks more exciting and fun. Spending $70k plus on the ZR2 only to experience these frustrations sucks. The monthly extortion for those infotainment features bothers me the most considering what you paid for the truck. Damn.
They are all about the subscription based model. Funny thing is they allow you to purchase them online but if you want to cancel a subscription you have to call and speak to someone lol
This is an example as to when it comes to my choice of trim level for a Sierra for example, I could go between an SLE or an Elevation Trim and just leave it there, this may sound lame to those who want more, but it's also proof that having the top Trim Models for some of these trucks, can also come with setbacks, just an example that the parts that are needed to put these trucks together and to function properly are of low quality; especially for the electronics, that certainly goes for all Trim Levels across the board.
I bought a 2022 Silverado LT Trail Boss with 3.0 Duramax this September. I have 1700 miles on it. I LOVE the truck, I smile every time I drive it, it checks most of the boxes including fuel efficiency, nice interior, cool exterior, color, features etc… the only complaint and one of the biggest was the Infotainment system. I was so excited to have their newest system and it has been a disappointment in the sense that it is laggy. For a 64K truck I wanted it to be flawless and not react seconds after my actions. Once I basically got “used” to its mediocre respond time I love everything else and would recommend it to anyone. One last thing thank goodness for apple car play because yes not paying for GM data plans makes more than half its google functions useless.
The ZR2 vs Trail Boss (re)assessment seems pretty valid considering your planned mods. I looked for months at Ford (Tremor) and Ram (Laramie w/mods) and by the time you add it all up these alternatives were noticeably more (10%+) than the GM, especially since I found a GM dealer who negotiated off of MSRP. All Ford dealers wanted $5k - $10K over MSRP. Social is full of various quality complaints on every make. The subscription stuff is going to get a lot worse - everybody is doing it and several makes seem to have worse plans than GM. "Owning" a vehicle is going to be radically different in 5 years. As always thanks for the vid Matt; very useful to learn from your experience.
I agree, I think the subscription stuff is going to get worse. Companies are starting to charge for self driving stuff per month. All in all, trucks are just too damn expensive now.
Videos need to still be made that spending this much money on vehicles should not also have a monthly price for “built in” features. Enough negative attention on social media could make them rethink some of it like a data plan. Take the data from my already connected cell phone!!!!
All the people reporting on social media complaining when gm tried to give you a interior that wasn't expensive and now that you got the fancy interior your still complaining about it, everyone on social media did this to themselves so now just suck it up and deal with it because truck prices will be expensive from now on especially considering everyone just keeps on buying them at the prices they are and if you compare the prices the high country Silverado is a bargain compared to the Ford and ram top trim levels
That sucks, I have a 2019 Silverado and currently have 35,000 miles on it and at 5,000 miles my right Bank lifters went out. They did fix it free of charge i got the truck back in about a week or so, I guess I was fortunate. As for the LED light bulbs, that's not a big deal to me, brightening up a license plate I just don't see the purpose. I have halogen bulbs and the rear lamps I think they look great the way they are and the bulbs are cheaper to replace. I did recently deactivate the DFM with the Pulsar LT so I'm hoping I won't have any other lifter failures. I got my truck for about 34,000 the wheel to wheel step bars and it's the all-star edition. I've gone and looked at new ones, they always try to get me to trade my truck in telling me I can get what I paid for it but then I have to pay like $25,000 more for pretty much the same truck with less options so no thanks. I'll be keeping mine for quite a long time, I love my truck with the analog gauges, digital gauges look very cool but how long will they really last. Awesome video though it is a beautiful looking truck.
It does indeed seem like a Trail Boss with lockers. The DSSV's will leak just like they do on the Colorado's. The interior is nice, I'll give it that. It should have been supercharged and way wider. 35's should have also been factory.
Agreed on all counts. At least the Colorado ZR2 had different control arms and such. Not a fan of DSSVs, I'd rather have standard shocks that are long travel.
That delay seems to be in EVERY newer vehicle with bluetooth... hook it up with a cable and there is no delay. My 2022 f250 does the same thing. It is a software issue that all vehicles are using that causes it.
Word to the wise, don't get the first year edition of a new vehicle. The first cycle is usually the test dumby cycle. It will get better in a couple of years after customer reviews.
Wow!!! You summed up all the issues I have with my '22 RST Z71. The infotainment system is crap, and when I compare it to the features of my Tesla, its utter garbage. Why do I have to pay for maps when my phone has it already. They are stripping features away in order to charge for them. I love my truck, but we are spending too much already to have to pay more for basic features.
Ya I think you should've just got a Trail Boss especially since your going to change suspension components but you still have a electronic diff lock and that's cool. you need a programmer to correct for tire size because your computer is wrong with different tire size than stock. I always put on a programmer 1st thing to correct for tire size and AFM delete. I actually usually get better gas mileage on the hiway with bigger tires. And there's products out there to have fog light and hi beam on. Chevrolet has always been that way. beautiful truck and you've already made a few mods but I would definitely get a programmer or have it tuned.
I agree, as soon as I bought my 21 TB I bought the Range piggyback computer to deal with the auto start/stop and the DFM delete. The mod for the lights is the "4-Hi" or "6-Hi" but I can't remember the name of the company. I believe they also sold a wireless charging pad for the center console.
Classic gm. Rebrand the same vehicle and sell it for more. They have always been trash about supporting the new models too. The aftermarket manufacturers have propped them up for decades creating fixes for their annoying issues.
For the paint chip issue, I think GM isn't spraying the edges thick enough. Edges and bends need an additional coat to make the paint stronger in those areas
Everyone that has chipped and peeling paint around the hood piece needs to contact GM directly and file a case and get the case number. Reporting it to dealers does not good. GM needs to hear from all Trailboss and VR2 owners so maybe they will do a recall or something. No excuse that a $75k truck should have paint issues before it even leaves the lot.
I hear your complaints, but I just wanna speak on the bluetooth issue. This may not be GM's fault, but rather, the fault of the technology. Bluetooth is notoriously laggy. A simple patch from GM may fix this.
I fought this battle with Toyota since they started the TRD Pro. You can build a 5.3 Base model for 43k, put a 5k King lift, 2K wheels, 2K tires, 1K sliders, 2K customer bumper (with winch), 1K high clearance rear bumper, and keep ~20k in your pocket. ARB probably has front and rear air lockers for these diffs already.
Holy shit man. You should just trade it in for a Trail Boss. You haven't even taken it off road yet so you don't have any idea what it's actually capable of. Meanwhile, there are channels that have and are reporting the truck is great for what it is was designed for. Why didn't you just buy an RST and save yourself $7K?
I think it is capable off road for sure, but I don't think it's leaps and bounds better than a Trail Boss. Same suspension minus shocks, same ground clearance mostly, same size tires, but with lockers. Lockers are awesome, no doubt.
I actually ordered a 2023 Trail Boss LT 6.2 Glacier Blue two weeks ago. And it probably won’t get delivered to me until sept-Oct. i was actually super close to getting the ZR2 I mean super close but I told myself I was gonna change the suspension and lift my truck and get bigger tires anyways so I got the trail boss. Hopefully they fix the bugs in the infotainment system I agree it shouldn’t be that slow. But I’ve also seen videos to where it looks fast maybe because they had date plan?😂
Ive got a 2022 5.3 trailboss. I have mild radio hiccups related to static on occassion but my main peeve is the auto stop is automatically on every restart. The feel if you hit the gas and restart simultaneously is stressful
That's Crazy I thought this truck was gonna be insane cause when the ZR2 Colorado released I traded in my Z71 for a 2018 ZR2 Colorado and I've done everything from jumping dessert running black diamond trails all 100% stock! The DSSV hasn't leaked on me and I'm going 4 years. I go wheeling alot with 420 Motors he has both ZR2s.
I was pretty stoked when Chevy announced the Silverado ZR2. Then the commercials popped up bragging about being on 33's. Huh? The Raptor is on 37's now. And only one engine option? When there are perfectly good diesels and near 700hp supercharged V8's in GM's inventories? Seems like a pretty good vehicle for the Blackwing Hot-V motor Cadillac spent $20 million on. Ram has the T-Rex and Ford has the Raptor R so Chevy must have wanted to start from the 2nd row. Even the 2023 Colorado ZR2 is slated to have 400+ horsepower. I'm pretty underwhelmed.
I’m also having a turn signal issue. Every once in a while, I turn the truck on, and my left signal does not work. Then the next time I get in it it’s fine, and the dealer can’t seem to figure it out. Anyone know why this is?
You claimed that you can't turn off the speed limit sign on the heads up display, and on the dash. You are incorrect. How do I know? Because I also have a 2022 silverado zr2 and I turned it off in the settings section in the dashboard.
But you are right, it is annoying that you can't get the speedlimit infomation from the data connection from your phone. You have to have the data plan for it to work.
I bought the '17 ZR2 and Chevy dealer withheld a lot of things from me or told me stuff completely wrong. When I bought it I told them the 31" tires looked like trash and the dealer told me it would fit 33s without issue which is clearly Incorrect, bit at the time the truck was brand new and not a lot of user data. I could go on and on about things I hate about the truck (ie. Weak tie rods, weak engine, repairs, over-rated DSSV shocks etc) Thanks for making your video and telling the truth about the silverado to save dummies like me from buying
MPG at 14/17? Wow! My 1992 K1500, that I bought brand new, was rated at 13/17 with a 350. I routinely got 17-19 in a mix of about 50/50 city/hwy. Hope it gets better for you. Great info; I’m sure it’ll help prospective Silverado ZR2 buyers.
I have a 2022 GMC Elevation and the front camera stopped working along with all the features it works with. Turns out it needed a calibration and they also updated my trucks software. Everything works again.
I purchased the 2020 Trail Boss with the 6.2 engine. Added the Pulsar Lt to it to stop the stupid dynamic fuel management systems in addition to not having to hit the button to turn off the stop/start feature. Added an oil catch can too. Have 19,800 miles. Hoping the lifter issue does not rear its ugly head. Paid 53K for a loaded out truck minus sun roof. The new ZR2 is way over priced. The interior in nicer than mine, but I have heated steering wheel and heated leather front seats. Had to add seat riser for front passenger seat. The passenger seat sat about an inch or two lower causing my wife to complain about how low it was. $125 kit.
I've got the heated and cooled front seats with the wheel, only the wheel does work right now. Interior is pretty amazing, and so is the truck. It's just not an amazing ZR2.
Paying extra for those basic services is a joke on a 70,000+ truck, and they could have done so much better on this truck is true. use to be a big Chevy guy but now a days you got to research and go with the best truck and deal at these prices.
I was thinking of trading trucks this year. ZR2 and AT4X got my attention. Price’s killed that... OK..... just a AT4..... Well, now $1,500 mandatory Onstar subscription..... No Thanks... OK, Trail Boss then..... Prices keep going up and now you are pointing out all these problems with Chevy trucks..... Guess I’ll just keep my old 2014 Z71 and spend a few dollars on repairs.... Half that crap on new trucks I could do without anyway.... Heck, I’ve been driving for many years and never needed front camera’s or heads-up display or internet capabilities in my truck. Or Onstar to plan my route.... Now heated seats and steering wheel is nice, I will agree with that.
As a lifelong GM/Chev guy, the trend of the recent trucks is kinda bumming me out. Can we just get some round wheel-wells and normal looking front ends?
I just got a used fully loaded every option available 2021 GMC AT4 with 30K miles. Due to my 2014 RAM Limited died at 192K mile with lifter failure. So weird I miss so much of my RAM. I love the look of the GMC AT4 verses the new RAMs. But my old RAM black plush seats are so much more comfortable (AT4x has something comparable). Two coolers in the floor board (more storage). Automatic Rain Wipers, Adjustable foot Pedals, Air Suspension, Reliable Info Entertainment Connects and ease of use (no data plan), electric Steering Column adjustment, SD card for my music (GMC it is used for the maps).
Well I have a Sikverado Zr2, before that a 2020 Trail Boss with a 6.2, and before that a Colorado zr2. Let's start with the important differences. The lockers and suspension are huge improvements over the Trail Boss. I do offroad my truck and the Trail Boss suspension is straight up garbage. The Zr2 is really good, and until you go offroad you're not going to see the difference over the Trail Boss. Second, the g80 is notoriously unreliable in the rear of the Trail Boss. The selectable lockers are a game changer. Now....my paint is chipping on my hood and I have a couple other gripes. But all in all the trucks are not comparable offroad. At all.
Now by suspension, you mean the shocks? Because that's the ONLY difference between them. I agree on the lockers, that's a huge upgrade and GM's advantage over everyone else.
@@matt13ross the shocks are a huge upgrade. The rancho shocks on the Trail Boss are so soft I was unable to move cycling the suspension top and bottom in the sand. The 6.2 was useless and I ditched the Ranchos for Bilsteins. Another thing is the gas mileage. Is it GOOD? No. But I hit 16 at 80 every day and I can get 18 just keeping it at 70. Extra weight from wheels and tires killed my mileage on the trail boss so I'm keeping em stock for now on the ZR2. I do think you make a lot of good points about other issues, can't defend the paint and my infotainment is slow too. But if you really offroad the truck the trail boss and the zr2 are not close, having owned both with the same power train.
if you are going to upgrade the suspension anyways. skip the trail boss and ZR2 and get an Z71 RST. all the same as the Taril and the Z minus the cost, and its all color match. i own an 2021 Trail boss. and im on the same boat as Matt
My ‘21 RST Silverado has that exact same delay in the radio. It doesn’t matter if the phone is plugged in or not and the dealership said they didn’t know what to do about it lol.
@@matt13ross nope and I’ve tried to have the dealership mess with it twice. My wife has always had Chevy SUVs and she’s never had this issue. I swear it’s a Silverado thing.
Love your review. I got a 2021 ZR2 Colorado and I love it. Not as nice with "features" but I would be pissed to no end if I got the truck and have to pay monthly for features that are standard with that model for data. Now my truck didn't arrive with rock sliders and I didn't realize until almost 2 weeks after the fact. the dealership didn't get them in for over a month and it was in a different state. had them delivered to my house, paid for the install and then call the dealership to refund me. also the light bar was installed wrong and they had to send the local dealership a new harness and remount one of the lights because it was upside down lol. but the Truck works perfectly
also the ZR2 should only be used for the Colorado the Silverado should be like ZX2 or XR or something else. now when I say I have a ZR2 no one knows what the heck I'm talking about.
regular degular Z71's have been coming with Eaton lockers since the 90's as standard equipment. most people dont know how they engage (by wheel slippage) and never know they will not engage with traction control on. if you want to verify look for the G80 code on the trim package sticker in glovebox.
Only had 1 issue, so far, with my 6.2 Trailboss is less than 1k miles, I had to get a new transmission valve body replaced, which is essentially the brains of the transmission. It was jerking and bucking at certain steady speeds. But it did affect the lane keep assist, for some reason. I also figured out the intelebeam headlights and fog lights issue about a week of owning the truck.. That does suck and I will agree, they both should be able to be on or activated and switch when needed.
@@matt13ross That it does. My wife says it’s to aggressive. She’s got a ‘22 traverse and it’s not nearly as aggressive when moving you back into the lane as the truck is.
Interesting and points you raise. I studied the window sticker you show at 1:34 and can't believe they don't even put the VIN, engine size, color or model anywhere. There is also no crash rating which is a bit concerning. I really don't like having to buy some kind of additional data plan so that features continue to work. We see its $200 plus per year but who knows maybe they raise the rate at some point or say they don't support the feature any more in the future... I hate the long delay on screens. Deal breakers really. I love the looks of the truck and think they did a great job on exterior styling too but quality issues are another huge problem. deforming interior door panels and paint chipping, low shock mount clearance on an off road truck....made in Mexico and they still want 71K. I believe I will pass. What's up with no steering lock???
Agree on the data plan and random non-LED lights being goofy-especially the data plan contingent features. Stupid. That said, you can get a year of very limited data for $150. The lockers and DSSV shocks are kind of a big deal, though. That’s a significant difference between the ZR2 and the Trailboss. Though you did mention you planned to replace all of the suspension on yours, which would indeed make the DSSV not useful for you.
I tried for 4 months to order a ZR2 and GM just canceled my order and gave me a $3k allowance on any 22 Silverado. Literally today I got a 6.2 LT LTD TB for an estimated $13k cheaper after taxes. I’ll get some control arms and dssv shocks. I’m not a fan of the ipad looking infotainment system
My 17 Z71 with the 6.2 8speed so far I usually get 20-22 hwy city 15-17 so in the 35k miles I’ve driven it combined is close to 17mpg why is the ZR2 much worse.
The company I work for uses all Chevy Silverado 1500 z71 and the Bluetooth/apple and Android auto has always had sluggish music delays when in use with phones. The oldest I had was a 2015 and have a 2021 currently and both have the same problems with the infotainment!
I just bought a new Silverado Saturday and my auto brights dose not work when I press the button and the dealer said it dose not have the feature then but the button is there and it’s on my sticker for my window
Should have just bought a loaded RST and bought a nice lift. Obviously your not going to get the lockers and run the possibility of losing the warranty but hey at least you save some money.
My radar camera went out on my 2020 LTZ… been waiting 4 months to get a new one. That means: No cruise control…at all, no intelligent headlights, auto stop, pedestrian recognition, lane keep assist, etc.
@@matt13ross you can change from adaptive to “regular” when adaptive works but you can’t use old fashioned cruise when this camera breaks. Frustrating. I do like the ZR2’s lockers. I put a ton of miles on my truck, so the lack of 3.0 duramax is a deal breaker for me. Guess I’ll keep the 2020 I have AND keep the Wrangler Rubicon I have too for the serious off road stuff.
@@matt13ross yep. Frustrating! Still love the truck with a few exceptions like the seats straight off the front of a stagecoach (along with its rear leaf springs).
Great info brother!!👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻 These zr2 variants are arriving in Australia in 12 months.. I think the ltz will be sufficient for what I need it for.. Cheers 🍻👍🏻
You know what doesn’t have possible lifter issues, forced data plans, slow controls, deforming interior panels. My 96 k1500 suburban lifted with 35s and can just off-road as well as the zr2. Lol. But yeah, I’m waiting on the colorado zr2.
Matt appreciate the vid I have a 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 and it’s been at the dealer for a week and half the front camera finally came in and the safety features still don’t work on it last I heard a GM engineer was at the dealer looking at it with the shop foreman but man this sucks looking like GM might have to buy the truck back :( which I hate because everything about the truck I love. Oh well maybe now I can get a Raptor now
I don’t know… hearing your complaint that this is an overpriced Trail Boss doesn’t hold water for me.
@@Dnh-Bear lol true
DNH, that's because it looks like one long run on sentence and I didn't read through it all yet.
@@matt13ross fair point
It amazes me how many people cant accept the shortcomings of the engineering. Facts over feelings. Thanks for the honest review.
Thanks! Lots of butthurt people here!
Chevy went woke, just bought my first Ford after 40 years of Chevy. Not that Ford is much better.
Since you seem to hate the ZR2 i'll give you $50k for it
Lol, like I said, I love it, just could have been much better than a Trail Boss.
Oh boy the GMT900s were AWFUL lol!
@@matt13ross Totally agree with you Brother... Nice ZR2 and thanks for the real world reviews 💯💪👍
Thanks! I don't have the money to swap between all those trucks though lol.
Valid concerns but I want to be fair with a few things:
People worried about MPG don’t buy a V8 lol
WIRELESS Car play/android auto isn’t super great in most vehicles. There’s a reason why there has been a slow adoption of it in most makes/models (latency) - I’ll say mine works fine. 2-3 seconds latency is OKAY given I don’t have to plug in my phone anymore (thank goodness).
I paid MSRP, you got a good deal with one at a discount!
@@matt13ross “Wireless” CarPlay on our Audi and GMC are slower. Plugging them into the USB port makes them snappy.
I am so glad I watched this video, you have really opened my eyes, I was ready to pull the trigger on a zr2. No more, it's not worth it. Thank you for making this. 🤙👍
Great Silverado, not a great ZR2.
Wow, there's so much helpful information in this video. Thanks for taking the time to show the current problems.
Glad it was helpful!
I have been a GM guy all my life, but I bought a Ford F150 Supercrew with the 3.5 twin turbo ecoboost and am very happy with it. Truck has lots of power and rides alot better than the GM pick ups i have owned.
I believe that, the problem with the Ecoboost engines are they sound terrible lol.
I have ‘22 TB and absolutely love it. Satin steel metallic gray with blacked out windows, tail lights, 3rd brake light, badges, wheels.
Satin steel would have been my choice if available
Fuel economy is largely effected by your right foot. Try to compare it to a Trail Boss lol; "nothing special about it" how many factory trucks come with a electronic front locker... I can only think of 1 other, the Power Wagon. So, 3:11 into your review, I had to stop watching because I can only handle soon much BS in a day.
Okay it's a trail boss with lockers. And the gas mileage sucks regardless of how easy I drove it.
I don't see the reason why you are regretting having bought it, I liked it a lot and I wouldn't change it, its off-road capabilities seem spectacular to me, with a beautiful v8 6.2
I said in the video I love the truck, GM just didn't upgrade it much over a TB like they should have.
@@matt13ross okey okey.
Not everyone drives their trucks off road.
@@12Moun why buy a zr2 in the first place? If you're planning to drive it on road only that defeats the purpose. It's meant to go off road mainly.
My average is 800 miles is around 13mpg. Sucks!! Not sure on the gearing without looking it up. Doesn't really matter because it has 10 gears lol.
Forgot to mention the GM app used on phone to start, unlock etc,,, back in 2018 that service came with purchase truck now that is also a monthly fee!

I'm jealous of the Duramax! Trail Boss's look better too IMO.
Thank you for making this video. Manufacturers need to calm down with their pricing. Usually when you make a video about not liking something, whole lot of people come out with their feelings hurt.
Yup, I just try and give my honest opinion. TONS of great things about this truck, just a let down ZR2 wise.
Wonder if you could make money selling it?
@@matt13ross I think so because the markups are so high and I have a lot of equity in it.
Either way, GM could have and should have done better.
Jeep 392 is on the radar.
What color is it. Looking to buy one
Thank you, and thanks for watching! You have bronze wheels too?
@@matt13ross waiting on wheels, literally picked it up Sunday
Fresh delivery!
Damn.
Working on the Porsche this weekend!
Is CarPlay still slow when plugged in? Or is it only the wireless CarPlay that lags?
Haven't tried that yet, probably a little faster though.
Have a new 2022 colorado ZR2. No heated seats. Module on back order. 🤦♂️
Really appreciate your honest reviews!
Thanks! Man, you should just wait for the new 2023 Colorado! I may end up trading for one.
Yup, agreed. The 3.0 Duramax is sweet though!
Thanks. Digital clusters and such had been around for may years now so I wouldn't worry about them failure. Just like regular old clusters fail too.
@@matt13ross true.
The thing is, Carplay and Android Auto connect via wifi, not bluetooth. But I can imagine it's common to be slow, though it shouldn't be.
Yup, big disappointment!
Assembled in MEXICO. Also half owned by CHINA. Why so expensive.
What muffler did you install and is it approved by Che rolet for warranty. I would like to install one .
AWE, shouldn't affect warranty.
I have the new rst refresh with the 6.2 and I get 17 city 22 highway. I do drive in L9 all the time so I don’t know if that helps.
Way better than mine! lol being an RST helps
I'm going to get a tune and such when available for the 22s.
You're not wrong!
For the paint chip issue, I think GM isn't spraying the edges thick enough. Edges and bends need an additional coat to make the paint stronger in those areas
I think how the scoop is attached is a problem too.
They should have rubber sealed the edge of the scoop.
@@strozyvoodoo5395 that would be better but "cost" is an issue
Yup, not a bad plan at all.
Your smart. There's a bunch of dumb asses on here. The ZR2 is over rated compared to the trx and Raptor. Just buy a trailboss and put a locker in it
Holy shit man.
Data plan shouldn't make it faster or slower. Do the 23s have new color options? The 22 colors suck on the ZR2!
Thank you so much for this video! Your info has saved me a ton of money.
Also on 2022 Silverado. Took 11 months from date of purchase to receive the chips so my heated and cooled seats worked
Ive got a 2022 5.3 trailboss. I have mild radio hiccups related to static on occassion but my main peeve is the auto stop is automatically on every restart. The feel if you hit the gas and restart simultaneously is stressful
Yea that's annoying for sure.
My TrailBoss with the diesel is on the trail inbound. I’m hopefully it’s not gonna have issues. Enjoyed the content!
If I got a Trail Boss I think I would go diesel for the MPGs!
I think I’ll order a 23 TB with the 3.0. The 3.0 is proving to be very very good
I was pretty stoked when Chevy announced the Silverado ZR2.
Yup, 33s are a HUGE embarrassment!
Have 2021 zr2 Colorado..has done everything I needed it to do so far
My gas mileage is closer to 16 highway ,city combined.Trail boss doesn’t have head up display or cooled seats when I purchased mine this spring
I also own this truck. I'm averaging 14.9 over 6k miles. I concur with the points made in this video.
Better MPGs than me!
I’m also having a turn signal issue. Every once in a while, I turn the truck on, and my left signal does not work. Then the next time I get in it it’s fine, and the dealer can’t seem to figure it out. Anyone know why this is?
Haven't had that issue or heard of it either.
What wheels and tires and size thanks looks awesome
18s with 34.5 tires. They are linked.
Very much loved your informative video, question… does the trail boss offer the Duramax Diesel 6.6
Future towing a RV
You can only get the 6.6 Duramax on HD trucks. But you can now get the 3.0 Duramax on the ZR2 and Trail Boss.
6.2 Tb OR ram rebel 5.7 hemi. Which truck will I save me more gas money guys?
Both gonna be bad.
I have a 2022 trailboss with the 6.2L. I get 16 to 20 average. Its 420hp and with my Borla exhaust and CAI it does 0-60 in almost 5 seconds.
Hrm, maybe they updated the system. I didn't find that option when I had mine.
Weak tie rods, weak engine, repairs, over-rated DSSV shocks etc)
Thanks for making your video and telling the truth about the silverado to save dummies like me from buying
TRX is rated a 10/14, which is pretty much what I'm getting with smaller tires and 300 less HP lol. DUMB!
That k1500 was probably faster and more capable too.
@@porkchopexpress6969 it had a nice 383 in it. It would scoot pretty well.
I have a 2022 GMC Elevation and the front camera stopped working along with all the features it works with. Turns out it needed a calibration and they also updated my trucks software. Everything works again.
I'm surprised they got it fixed!
That’s why you don’t buy the first model year of it over time they would have fixed the issues
Gotta buy it first for UA-cam.
True
Paying extra for those basic services is a joke on a 70,000+ truck, and they could have done so much better on this truck is true. use to be a big Chevy guy but now a days you got to research and go with the best truck and deal at these prices.
Yup, should be standard and FREE! At least for a year or so, not ONE MONTH!
Yea the prices just keep going up and don't show signs on stopping!
@@matt13ross People would actually have to come together and agree on not making those purchases, but that's just wishful thinking.
Do you think you would have had the same issues if you would have gone with the AT4 versus the ZR2?
Probably, though I expect less with the AT4 than the ZR2. The ZR2 is a name that's been around for decades. The AT4 is pretty new.
As a lifelong GM/Chev guy, the trend of the recent trucks is kinda bumming me out. Can we just get some round wheel-wells and normal looking front ends?
The wheel wells are round finally lol.
Don't forget to mention. During repairs, the dealer will give you a basic Colorado for a loaner or something less for your 70 plus truck
100% true!
Which muffler delete did you get?
ebay.us/T7TRxp
GM definitely failed at this truck.
So much potential wasted!
My 2021 Trail Boss LT with a 5.3 is getting about 23mpg with mixed driving . This is over a course of almost 25k miles.
Much better than mine!
I can't really disagree with any of that. But the 2022+ GM trucks are MUCH nicer.
Oh yea Rancho shocks are usually trash lol.
Thanks for all your input Was thinking of upgrading from my 21 Denali but No No No will wait Thanks ✌️👍🇨🇦
Upgrade to the Denali Ultimate!
if you are going to upgrade the suspension anyways. skip the trail boss and ZR2 and get an Z71 RST. all the same as the Taril and the Z minus the cost, and its all color match. i own an 2021 Trail boss. and im on the same boat as Matt
Not a bad idea either, just too late for me lol.
My ‘21 RST Silverado has that exact same delay in the radio. It doesn’t matter if the phone is plugged in or not and the dealership said they didn’t know what to do about it lol.
Sheeesh, I had assumed it was wireless Carplay problems, guess not!
@@matt13ross nope and I’ve tried to have the dealership mess with it twice. My wife has always had Chevy SUVs and she’s never had this issue. I swear it’s a Silverado thing.
Yea the dealerships aren't going to be able to fix that.
I love the blunt honesty man
Only had 1 issue, so far, with my 6.2 Trailboss is less than 1k miles, I had to get a new transmission valve body replaced, which is essentially the brains of the transmission. It was jerking and bucking at certain steady speeds. But it did affect the lane keep assist, for some reason. I also figured out the intelebeam headlights and fog lights issue about a week of owning the truck.. That does suck and I will agree, they both should be able to be on or activated and switch when needed.
The lane keep assist kinda sucks anyway, too jerky. Takes you from one side of the road to the other.
@@matt13ross That it does. My wife says it’s to aggressive. She’s got a ‘22 traverse and it’s not nearly as aggressive when moving you back into the lane as the truck is.
IDK why I can't get Super Cruise in the ZR2 anyway.
Finally someone saying what im saying. overpriced.
Nice review Matt. The price of everything is ridiculous!
It's sad that I'm not surprised about that.
The paint chipping is under warranty?
Should be, but I sold the truck.
My 17 Z71 with the 6.2 8speed so far I usually get 20-22 hwy city 15-17 so in the 35k miles I’ve driven it combined is close to 17mpg why is the ZR2 much worse.
I'm guessing the aero is terrible with the different front end.
The company I work for uses all Chevy Silverado 1500 z71 and the Bluetooth/apple and Android auto has always had sluggish music delays when in use with phones. The oldest I had was a 2015 and have a 2021 currently and both have the same problems with the infotainment!
Too slow for a 2022 IMO!
Sticker for a Trail Boss with 2.7 Turbo has the save EPA rating as you V-8, 17 highway. Crazy.
What? Really? That's terrible!
I hear you I get 14 in the city and 22 mpg on high way with my alaskan 6.6 litre gas 2022 3500 I only have 8000 miles on it
I just bought a new Silverado Saturday and my auto brights dose not work when I press the button and the dealer said it dose not have the feature then but the button is there and it’s on my sticker for my window
And when I press the bottom on the steering wheel to call somebody it won’t use my contacts even thow it says downloaded
It the sticker says you have it then you have it. Dealer needs to correct it.
They called me today to bring it back so they can look at it will see what they say
Should have just bought a loaded RST and bought a nice lift. Obviously your not going to get the lockers and run the possibility of losing the warranty but hey at least you save some money.
I would have skipped the lift and gone long travel from the start. The main reason I got the ZR2 was for UA-cam and the views aren't even good lol.
@@matt13ross Damn lol, no too late for that long travel kit. Still expensive though.
My radar camera went out on my 2020 LTZ… been waiting 4 months to get a new one. That means: No cruise control…at all, no intelligent headlights, auto stop, pedestrian recognition, lane keep assist, etc.
That's ridiculous! I'm hooked on this adaptive cruise control so mine better not break lol.
That's wild you can't use cruise at all without the camera.
@@matt13ross yep. Frustrating! Still love the truck with a few exceptions like the seats straight off the front of a stagecoach (along with its rear leaf springs).
Great info brother!!👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻
These zr2 variants are arriving in Australia in 12 months..
You're not wrong lol.
Oh well maybe now I can get a Raptor now
If they can't fix it, I hope they buy it back at the current market value, which keeps going up!
