Hello Dr Ekberg, some years ago I did 30 days water fasting. It wasn't difficult besides the progressive thirstiness - I had to stop it since no amount of water was able to quench my thirst. The coming back from the fast was a nightmare - long story short - my mucus membranes (and I suspect maybe even cell membranes to some extent) were leaking like a sift. I suspect this was a vitamins and mineral deficiency. Is there any provision of maintaining the normal intake of those while it doesn't count as eating (breaking the fast)?
First of all: thanks for this information! But there is a question left. if someone is insulin resistant - like most of all - would it work with this higher amount of carbs? I thought if someone is insulin restistant and the insulin spikes you will not get in autophagy even the proteins are low. Am I wrong? Would you please add this information to us? Many thanks! kind regards from Vienna/Austria
@@kulishev sipping on Dill pickle juice intermittently helps greatly. It refreshes & gives electrolytes. My favorite tasting is Mt. Olive dill pickles
BASICALLY, he's saying that if multi-day water fasting is proving impossible for you, there is an almost equally effective alternative - just eat a lot of veges in soup or raw salad form, preferably both, using low carb-veges like leafy greens, cucumber, onions, garlic, etc. as far as possible. This will not only give you the vitamins and minerals, but can cause autophagy, as without protein in your food, your body will go looking for waste protein and use it up, which is the goal of fasting.
No, this is not fasting mimicking, its starving. Im sorry. Rather not eat any food for 3 days. Its much easier and you dont trick your body you arr eating. Any food with that little calories will trigger a raveneous hunger. ❤
@Radoslav-gk7wu Yea...I'm a bit mixed on this. Because I was on Keto for a few months back in 2019 and I do water fast time to time. My understanding of Fasting is the absence of calories hence drinking water only. So, I fail to see how this would be considered in the same realm as fasting 🤷
Thank you doctor. Following your advice I have lost about 60 pounds since last fall. My fasting glucose is below 100. I feel better than I did 10 years ago. People have asked me what diet I have been on . I explain I am not on a strict diet, I have a lifestyle change. I like the path I am on and best of luck to my fellow travelers.
would you mind giving some details so others here can benefit more? I like Dr E's ideas but find that he doesn't give practical information for me. I can never really follow his plans properly, I think I need a more precise plan; x amount of protein, fat, carbs per day, not to have to figure out the macro % of each meal... TIA!

Some people even lose their hair if they do water fasting. It's not for everyone. A person who is weak in nutrients can faint or even die during a 3 day fast. The mimicking is safer. Safe for everyone.
sea salt (sodium chloride) (be sure it's not iodized salt, and even better if this sea salt would be made by natural way of evaporating sea water in sun). potassium - A MUST. magnesium - transdermal magnesium (magnesium chloride aka magnesium oil, can make it yourself or buy) or/and magnesium supplements; zinc - a bit of zinc supplements; It kinda a must to use these or some of these when water fasting. Not only they help/protect your health but could/should make fasting easier, in some people much easier. You may look up euvexia as an example of quality electrolytes supplement but I do not endorse calcium supplements and I think natural sea salt is better than Himalayan salt.
I'm 55 hours in... So far this is working really well for me. Literally all I needed was some leafy greens and avocado and I'm good. I know this is not a traditional water fast, but I've never seen anything past 42 hours on my IF timer so I'm happy.
@@jodiforsythe3486While it's only been 3 of 5 days for me, I am noticing the water release from the lower insulin, which equates to some weight, but I've been doing Keto, OMAD for a while now so my results will be less dramatic than if I was just starting all this. I'm doing this to break thru a plateau and from past experiences I expect to see fat coming off easier over the coming weeks.
Yes. Extended fasting can be difficult. I regularly do 72-hr fasts; BUT, I worked my way up to it by first doing intermittent fasting (16/8 then 18/6 or 20/4) for several MONTHS. Then, I fasted for 24 hours with only coffee, water, and tea. Eventually, I got to the point where I needed only salted water and/or unflavored electrolyte powder in my liquid fasts. Now, I don't get hungry at all on a 72-hr fast, but I still sometimes feel tired -- so I just take an extra nap. My point: feeling weak or tired does not necessarily mean you're not meant to do extended water fasts! It's a process! It requires thought, trial, error, and time. So, as a carnivore, I avoid all fruits, veggies, and other plant foods (which include things like olive oil and herbal teas). And as carbs are actually sugar molecules, and I don't do sugar, my ONLY carbs come from unsweetened, strained Greek yogurt. So, while this alternative is nice, please realize that full-out water fasting could still be right for you IF you take the time and effort to work up to it!🙏🌹
I’ve been doing that. Been working my way up, I already did a 48 hour fast and I felt really good, lots of energy, it was crazy! My next step is a 72 hour fast.
@@betty0672 That's great! Congratulations! It's great to have people like Dr. Ekberg and Dr. Berry as guides because much fasting research by "medical experts" is actually based on Ramadan fasting. I've actually written a few of these researchers, asking if they understand that there are different kinds of fasts (and thus different standards) and they never respond. For example, they like to claim that "dehydration can be beneficial," because dry fasting is not uncommon during Ramadan -- but as intermittent/extended fasters, we realize the importance of staying hydrated and maintaining a good electrolyte balance! I once did a five-day fast, but the literature seems to suggest that unless you're fighting a serious illness, 72-hr fasts are sufficient for reaching that "sweet spot" (autophagy, etc.). So all the best to you! You can do it!
@@iamwhoyousayiam6773 you won't be miserable... you will be burning fat and feel great running on Ketones....i've done multiple 5 day fast with NO hunger....
I worked my way to a 14 day water fast.. I can tell you the first 3 days are the worst, the next 4 days you no longer wait to eat , and the second week I didn't think about food... I could have gone longer easy...but what I found was I didn't have energy for any duration.. so I moved from that to one meal a day high in protein... easy to drop off a water fast to one meal a day.. I did 10 Dat water fasts several times, but 14 felt like a game changer
I have done both, I don't know why but water fast or even broth fast hurts my stomach (acid burning) I have tried twice: 4 and 8 days, and had problems to refeed after each of them. Fasting mimicking is harder for the temptations but easier on my stomach. I guess each person must try and figure what works for them.
@@algprei4243 yes (broths contains electrolytes) but my stomach hurts after a few days with only broths or water. if I fast only 24-36 hours it's fine though.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm working very hard to regain my health after a long bout with GI issues, and while I have been seeing tiny gradual improvements, I have been frustrated at how all my "tried and true" methods weren't really working for me any more. I watched this video and decided to try it. I am just entering day 3, and just WOW. After just 2 days, my blood pressure is excellent (116/62) and my blood sugar is nearly in the normal range. There are other improvements too, but I don't want to bore. Mind you I am several months into daily intermittent-fasting, low-ish carb clean eating (too low was triggering the GI issues) and daily exercise, but I wasn't seeing the results I was expecting or hoping for. I figured 5 days of this method was worth a shot. This has given me the breakthrough I have been praying for. I am so thankful for all the great, reliable content you put out Dr. Ekberg. 3 days to go! You can be sure I'll be repeating this 5-day FMD at least once a month for a long time.
Replacing electrolytes really helped me up my fasting game. I THOUGHT it was my blood sugar that was dropping when it was really my blood pressure. I was sweating & voiding out all my salt & it made me feel awful. Learning to replace my electrolytes really made me feel like I had a new tool to help me master the fast. Thanks, Doc. 💪🏽
@VANDERWALTTINA Dr.Sten has an electrolyte supplement available. I've never tried his but lately I've been using Liquid I.V. In the beginning, when I 1st began figuring it out I was just using Himalayan pink salt..I began to realize it was only happening to me in the summer when I would run and it was very hot outside. Hope it helps. 💪🏽💛
@@boudicca272 hi, thanks for your reply, I also just use the Himalayan salt, but by day 3 I usually feel so bad, heart palpitations etc, so I want to use something else, without breaking fast. I was thinking maybe sugar free sports drink, but there is so much bad ingredients in that?
@VANDERWALTTINA you might be missing some potassium. I know, like you the Himalayan salt works for a min but I get leg & feet cramps after a few days on just that. I want to try Dr.Stens electrolyte mix but, for now the Liquid IV is working good & it is all natural. No chems. I don't do sugar or aspartame so theirs is good. It comes in a few different flavors, in little packets to mix right into a 16oz water bottle. You go keep safe, now! Don't be out here getting heart palps tryin to fast, hon! Caffeine hits me harder when I'm fasting too. I drink black coffee & my heart will get to trippin if I drink too much while fasting. (& I always do!) 😄 Stay strong 💪🏽 & keep thriving! 🌻
Try Propel water or packets. Has no sugars, no calories. Only electrolytes and vitamins. I alternate that with Alkaline water, no sugar/calories, has some electrolytes as well. In on day 5 of my water fast. Have had no issues and been working out everyday.@VANDERWALTTINA
Thank you Dr Ekberg. I started to watch your channel when my A1C was 6.5 and your videos helped me to bring down my A1C to 5.3 without any medications, just following along on what to eat and what not to eat. Your videos are a life saver for me. Thank you Dr Ekberg for your videos.
Dr, Love your new video. So glad to see new video because I have been watching your older videos over and over again everyday for the last 10 months.. I managed to lose 13 kg, from 63kg to 50 kg now. Eating healthy is now my lifestyle., but I listen to your videos over and over again everyday many times to remind myself and to deepen my knowledge everyday.
Thank you, Dr. Ekberg! I'm so grateful for this. I used to do well with fasting, but it seems to have become more difficult during menopause. I'm excited to try this FMD.
I am really excited to know that there is this fallback for those times when IF is so much more difficult! It'll help me to not be so hard on myself if I can't finish the whole fasting time I planned. Sometimes some avocado and salad is all I need. Thanks again Dr. E, you are the best 🎉🎉🎉
I am on day 5 of the Prolon fasting mimicking system, which is likely the kit Dr. Sten referenced. Since this is my first 5-day fast, I appreciate having the structure and ready-made light meals. That said, the home version recommended by Dr. Sten sounds much more satisfying and fresh, with the added benefit of more fiber! However, if you struggle with proximity temptation, cooking at home might be challenging. Overall, I recommend trying either method! I have lost 5 lbs so far (I'm not overweight, so it might be more for some), but more importantly, the mental clarity I've gained has been worth it. I feel empowered and motivated to get back on track once I'm done! Also, I don't think I could have managed this with just water😬! Mad respect to those who can complete a 5-day water fast!
I put some Brokkoli, 2 carrots, 1 onion, 1 aubergine, 2 zucchini, lots of garlic, some salt and pepper into an airfryer, take it out after 17 minutes, put the Juice of two lemons on it, a tbs of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I eat that since Spring. ;-) And still love it. - and lost kilos..
Personally, I worked my way up to a longer term fast. I find its easier to not have any food around and just make the decision to drink water, tea or coffee. Otherwise, eating this way will stimulate me to eat other things later.
Mw too, but thinking of say mom's cooking for young families... caring for elderly that eat regularly... me, living alone its easiest to just not eat, not prepare...food.
Dear dr. Ekberg, I am so grateful to you! You are my go to source on health, and you led my keto journey, until I migrated to carnivore. I found dr. Antony Chaffee's argument convincing that carnivore is the proper human diet, and I feel the best on it. He explains how autophagy is the natural state on a carnivore/keto diet due to the absence of excess insulin, not due to fasting. I think, this is why just a fasting mimicking can also work.
@@michelangelobuonarroti916 High insulin blocks autophagy. When eating on a high fat and protein only carnivore/keto diet, you have low insulin and also not for long, so autophagy as a normal maintenance almost constantly takes place. Proof by study: after 3 months on keto/carnivore there are 4 times more and 4 times more effective mitocondria in cells. But it's better not to rely on my interpretation but to check out the referenced doctor's 15 min vid on why you don't need to fast for autophagy.
This is information I've been looking for after seeing ProLon a few years ago. I have fasted with water only for up to 12 days with phenomenal results. My husband is diabetic.. and even though he has followed a ketovore lifestyle for some time now he gets very dizzy and lightheaded with extended water fasting. Thank you. Hopefully this will help on the journey. ❤
Dr. Valter Longo, the developer of the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), says you get SOME of the benefits water fasting, NOT ALL. (Many educators inflate it to "all". See Longo's book, The Longevity Diet) I've tried the FMD several times with different levels of carbs. I'm an experienced dry- and water-faster, but 5 days on a plant-based starvation diet was difficult for me--it kept my appetite up. Each FMD I lost a lot of muscle & lowered my metabolism (boomerang weight gain after + body temp reduced). Perhaps I should have increased resistance training during the fast, as studies show this helps prevent muscle loss. The FMD was originally used for people taking chemotherapy to reduce side effects. FMD can also be good for those who must take meds with food & cannot water fast. Otherwise it's easier to just fast for 3 days, AND you get ALL the benefits of fasting. But work up to it to teach your body & mind how to fast.
Interesting! I’ve done water fasting up to about 41 hrs And I’ve done a version of the FMD for about 3 days. I’m curious: how did you know that you lost muscle during the FMD? It confuses me why eating a small amount of food (FMD) would cause muscle loss, while eating NO food (water fast) would not. Thanks for any clarification you can offer! 🤗
Thank you for this insight... ive been strict carnivore for @ 80 days now. Dealing with prediabetes, autoimmune disease. Ive lost half of the 20 lbs the dr advised. Am seeing great results re: bp now normal w/o med... off statins... lowered asthma inhalers ( lots of corticosteriods but necessary for now)... I amseeing increased energy and exercising more..Im sering positive responses so far, however i have had 2 cheat carb times (3 days each) of low carbs, fruits, some sugar. Immediately saw bp increase, feet swelling return, lethargy and just feeling " off"...I followed each with 3 day water fast and went back to carnivore...the experiences taught me i that ONE CARB LEADS TO ALL CARBS...😂.. i simply cant control it once its out... its like my former smoking addiction (stopped 40 yrs ago and wont go back ) ... maybe some carbs can be tolerated in the future but a small bit of the low carb could soon escalate to an apple pie and a gallon of ice cream😂.. my only saving grace was that these items were not available to me at the time and i got through the temptations w/o going whole hog....
Thank you from type 1 61 years, so hard to fast because I still have to take insulin for normal body function. It puts me at risk of low glycemic event. Feels like I am dying! I had one last night and my blood sugar was so low 53 and just ate some of my vegetables soup and got it up to 63 and I felt better. So I recovered from an event and didn’t ruin my fast. Woke up with 90 blood sugar, which is great for me. I also switched to decaf coffee with MCT powder and stevia. It follows the rules. Caffeine strips your minerals, leaves you feeling light headed and weak. According to other accounts and it’s been my experience also. ❤
I am a fervent follower of yours. But this is the first time I found this WOE too complicated. I understand there may be benefits but carnivore is just so much easier. Keep up your excellent teaching. We are grateful!
I'm grateful, doctor. Since last fall, I have shed roughly 54 pounds by following your advise. My glucose during fasting is less than 125. Compared to 5 and a half years ago, I feel better now. Many have questioned me about the diet I've been following. I emphasize that I have adjusted my lifestyle and am not on an exact diet. I enjoy the route I'm on, and I pray my fellow travelers the best of luck.
OMG just as i said tomorrow new month time for new challenges Dr. Ekberg this 1 will be really challenging for me, i eat a lot of legumes/nuts and seeds Ok mission 3/4 months 1 meal every 24 hours and a 48-hour fast every week vegan mode, I'll be eating loads of mushrooms for my vitamin D, my nutritional yeast for b12, juicing my veggies, and mixing with Seamoss Will have to check my weight today before bed God Bless my brothers and sisters and remember nothing good comes easy, consistency is key
❤Naturally, our closest relatives - Chimpanzees are usually considered ripe FRUIT Specialists. This more selective foraging strategy sets chimpanzees apart from many other mammals that exploit agricultural environments. Chimpanzees ignore some widely cultivated non-fruit crops (e.g., most vegetables) Failure to utilise nutritionally-dense, energy rich crops might imply their dietary response is overly conservative for long-term survival in expanding agricultural environments (i.e., insufficiently flexible) Hope this helps. ❤
That's too difficult for me. I rather keep doing my 18/6 intermittent fasting. I've been doing it for 3 years, list 35 lbs and the best part, I haven't gained a pound.
This is typical, instead of trying it, you’re automatically saying that it is too difficult for yourself. You’ve defeated yourself before you’ve even begun.
@@LizzyL2024 Did you even consider this person was already doing a successful diet and that his honesty is refreshing. It’s too hard. We are all entitled to the way we look at things. Only a nasty hateful person would need to say what you said for no reason. Seriously what a horrible comment.
Thank your Dr. Ekberg. Your info has been priceless in my weight loss journey. I've gone from 280 to 230 and still making progress. I really can't thank you enough. I had a health scare in 2021 from COVID and was in a pitiful state after recovering since I was bed ridden for over 17 days. I decided I need to reinforce my body against future events. Thank you.
I don't know if anyone else has ever tried what I do, but I do 1tbsp of EVOO morning and evening (250 cal), electrolyte supplemented water (flavored for variety), with 2x (11g) Collagen Peptides (100 cal), because I'm not a fan of Bone Broth, 2oz Walnuts for Omega 3 (400 cal), usually less. So around 750 total calories per day, with no hunger or brain complaints. I do this to get into autophagy and continue doing this until I can't and hunger becomes dominant. Then I feed normally. Normal for Me is OMAD, EVOO (M/E), 1/3 lbs of ground beef (73/27)(grass fed) (150 cal), 3 eggs from pasture raise Chickens (210 cal), and continuing with the flavored water with (Collagen Peptides and electrolyte's) and the walnuts for snack, but no more that 1oz. I would love to hear what people think of this or if they have questions. Thanks. P.s. 1 meal outside the Home per week max, the less the better.
@@ОльгаПутилова-ъ9я Not exactly. There are some mineral water brands that fortify the water with additional magnesium, but electrolytes are a combination of salt, potassium and magnesium. You can make your own from these ingredients.
Sounds interesting. I would prefer yours as a fasting mimicking diet instead of Dr. Ekberg's vegetable one. I am trying to avoid plants because I have read (and listen) about the many natural toxic chemicals they produce to discourage animals from eating them, and problems with lectins, oxalates, high-histamine foods (most of which are plants), etc. I love bone broth, make it all the time from chicken, ham, turkey, beef - buying whole chickens to get all the bones to simmer for homemade broth. So good! I do eat avocados, which also are high in omega 3, but walnuts I would eat as well. I really have trouble doing the "true" fasting, of eating nothing for a day or 3. Not for me! Your plan is very do-able for me, whether I use your collagen and walnuts, or my personal tweaks. :)
@@u2kimbow Do your personal tweaks, that's how I made mine. I use the collagen because I started my weight loss at 247lbs, currently 173lbs, and the skin was getting loose. The collagen peptides seem to encourage the skin to reattach to the muscle with new connective bonds, now that the subcutaneous fat isn't as thick as it once was. I just wanted a snack with Omega 3's that wasn't high in calories and also had fiber. I pretend that I am gathering while fasting and not doing so well at hunting.
I do extended fasting twice a year, 5 to 7 days (one of my first ones was of 12 days as I needed to detoxify after a long medication) but it takes time as you have to prepare your body for 7 days and then very carefully plan after fasting period meals. This spring my life was to complicate to do it so your video is very timely for me. Thank you Dr Ekberg !
I recently did a 6 day fasting without any trouble and very little weight loss. Which was fine with me since I didn't do it for loosing weight. What was great though was that after 4 days every little ache in my body went away. My question would be how often can one do a 3 or 5 day fasting without causing unhealthy effects?
I was thinking exactly in that soup! Tomatoes, cabbage, red pepper, onion, garlic, and celery! I don’t know if I’m missing another ingredient! Oops, I forgot the protein…1 chicken breast! I did this many years ago and it worked well. Not easy eating the same soup for 5 days 🤐😩😬

I like this idea. A problem I have fasting are both mental and schedule. I feel as though I need to have lunch even if I'm not hungry out of habit or I feel like having dinner even if I'm not hungry out of habit. The other issue are business meetings usually done over food or drinks. Also in the workplace people bring in random food items like donuts or order pizza. We are presented with food all day everyday in all aspects of our lives. From fuel boards to UA-cam ads and just driving down the road past fast food places. It's very difficult to straight water fast in that environment so eating salads is a great idea.

Dr Sten it’s so wonderful that you are presenting your videos in so many different languages. I have wondered if you may sometime consider recording them in your own language too. I think there might be some Swedish 🇸🇪 people who would appreciate that. Me for sure would absolutely love to hear you speak your mother tongue language.. I have asked you previously to speak a bit in your videos as I have never heard you speak Swedish before. But still I haven’t heard a word of it…And I am convinced many of your millions of followers will adore hearing it too… It would be beautiful if it is recorded naturally and not AI adjusted like the rest of the languages. It was my birthday yesterday and I thought maybe I could make a birthday wish today…. Oh I do hope you would consider it. Sending lots of love like always ♥️♥️♥️
Good information for a lot of people I'm sure. For me, fasting is just the easiest. No thinking about it at all. Just. Don't. Eat. Wonderful for trips or for when I need to get some projects done. After a lifetime of diets and counting and measuring, I never plan to count another thing when it comes to food. One of the reasons I love ketovore. Heading toward 60 lbs of weight loss. Have done multiple 72 hour fasts and two 5-day. Once I'm past the first day and a half, the rest is just super easy. Nice to give people options though. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this information!! I am very surprised at your opinion on this method and am so grateful you are sharing it. I've hit a chapter in life where fasting has become difficult and miserable and I don't know why. I've been practicing/learning keto carnivore 5 yrs. Now this and I've gained weight and become very emotional over it. I also have two friends who just can't believe they can overnight fast. This is something to try!! I would have never tried this unless one of my trusted UA-cam doctors had explained it so well. Thank you again! Veggies do bother my digestion so I will keep it to a small selection, not much variety and probably well cooked for starters. Brothy soup with a little veg probably. And I Will test and measure my blood. That will be the true answer.

An elderly woman was asking me about how to save money on meat, and I explained to her that store's current weekend sales (.77 a pound for chicken legs/thighs/leg quarters, 3.99 a pound for frozen shrimp) and pointed out the quick sell rack to her. Their regularly priced meat is very expensive, even on sale. I think it's practically a crime that so much money is spent developing and marketing ultraprocessed foods, while ignoring real food needs that are common among working people who live in poor housing that may have limited cooking facilities.
@lisag18 you can get a fatty cut of steak for $10 or fatty cheap hamburger.. that's all you need in a day. That's cheaper than store bought vegetables and bread for a day...
My experience tells me fasting is not hard at all. It is actually easy when we drop sugar intake to low levels and stop the glycemic levels roller coaster. The trouble with fasting and low sugar diets are all social related. For instance, I have dinner with my wife, so I have to skip breakfast instead.
One of healthiest meals I know in USA is difficult but who can do it i suggest it. Wild plants like dandelion etc. Boiled in low temperature. Sauced by olive oil and lemon. Its a real medicine.
This is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from a doctor who studied protein for many years,. People like Dr. Rhonda Patrick changed their views and started to follow his advice. He says that if there is a lack of protein the body will DRAW FROM THE MUSCLES! He recommends a protein rich first meal of the day and a protein rich last meal of the day though lesser than the first meal (where you have to survive the whole day).
That is correct but this is for the purpose of a "fast". So if you were doing a more traditional fast you would be eating 0g of protein. The latest research definitely supports occasional fasting as beneficial to health. So doing it his way you would be eating, 75 g of protein for a 5-day fast, versus the alternative being a traditional fast of 0 g. So which one would use more protein?..... 🤔
Reminds me of the cabbage soup diet that was popular back in the 1980s... I think I still have the protocol somewhere. Make up a big batch of cabbage soup, some tomatoes for flavour, maybe some other low carb veggies, and eat it at least 3 times per day. Works if you can stick to it...
I thought the same! I did that diet, and actually loved the soup. Dr. Sten’s protocol allows a bit more variety of veggies, which sounds appealing, especially adding small amounts of potatoes. 🤗
Sten, please do a video on oxalates. Is this a "thing", do we need to exercise caution in how much oxalates we eat or is this overblown and should never be a concern. This would be very helpful.
Enjoying Dr. Ekberg scientific approach to all of this, explaining cause and effect, and his alternatives to others who just tell you to fast for days.
So far, I've not even attempted any of these long fasts. I can get headachey on an 8/16hr intermittent one easily enough. But I think I could start with doing this 1 day a week (especially the first day after doing grocery shopping, as I always tend to buy too many leafy greens and end up putting them in all sorts of things.
Hi Sten. Would you happen to know which vegs-fruit have the least oxalates? I have MS. I have been doing keto and IF for over a year. Lost weight felt okay.Started carnivore a month ago -WOW. many MS symptons have dissapeared...feel great. Had a small bread roll and bun 2 days ago and instantly some MS symptons returned 😮
Thank you @user-tm2vc6fj8q There are a lot of foods in the range between carnivore and bread. Most digestive and metabolic problems, especially if not resolved by a LCHF/Keto diet, are going to have their root in the health of your biome. This is especially true for autoimmune conditions. I will make more videos on this soon. 😄
Hi Dr. Ekberg, I have a question: If I'm not mistaken, Thomas DeLauer has it in some video that consuming any calories when fasting activates MTOR which inhibits autophagy. So how can you have autophagy using a diet such as this?
I'm healing from cancer 100% naturally and I tried only one day water fasting because I knew that I am very depleted, and I had said severe chest pain and heart felt like I could have a heart attack right now. So always for me mimicking diet fasting has worked out much better❤❤
Dr. Ekberg, you've changed my life forever. I want to thank you for putting these videos out. I'm slim, feeling pretty good, lost 30 pounds! I've been IF 20:4, but I know I need to suck it up and do 72 hours to initiate healing. Thanks for the alternative!
Please consider interviewing Sally Norton author of Toxic Superfoods. Oxalates are extremely serious to for all of us and few have recognized this until her work. Sweet potatoes, almonds, spinach off the chart high in oxalates.
I find the oxalate thing almost a distraction. I'm not saying I don't believe it , it's just it doesn't matter what you type in you will find negative and positive things about everything. Usually even coming from a medical doctor.
Thank you Sir..for acknowledging that we are all different & not everyone can water fast ...I get really weak & dizzy after 12 hours & can bearly function🤷🏾♀️😵
Have you tried gradual reduction. So you don't just stop eating, you gradually space out your meals as much as you can. And how much water are you drinking?
That's not normal, otherwise everyone would wake up in the morning feeling this way! Once you're fat adapted it should be easy for anyone to go at least 24 hours. Are you fat adapted?
You need to supplement with electrolytes such as salt, potassium,, and magnesium while water only fasting to avoid dizziness, fatigue, and even muscle aches or cramps.
I was trying...and not hunger. I was not hungry....but weakness didn't let me go with my daily routines and challenges that I have to stand against. Weakness not hunger is my obstacle when it comes to fast
Doctor's Ronda Patrick, Peter Atia and Grberial Lyons are now saying not to do extended fasting because of muscle loss/wasting is far more detrimental for longevity than any fasting benefits.
I’m not sure what you mean by extended fast, but Megan Ramos did a three day fast weekly for many weeks to not only increase muscle mass, but to reverse her osteopenia. Rhonda and Peter go whichever way the wind blows when it comes to changing their minds about things. Don’t know much about Gabrielle.
Nutrition research, thanks to most research being funded by food manufacturers who are associated with big pharma, is basically in its infancy. Studies are designed to "prove" that there is nothing wrong with eating ultraprocessed foods. Researchers whose studies show otherwise will have trouble getting funding in the future. I think on the average a person should get the recommended protein intake. So, since I eat one meal a day, that should be a heavy protein meal. If I did alternate days of this and a heavy meat day, it should be twice the normal protein on those meat days.
@@LauraB.335 A sample size of 1 is of limited usefulness in the grand scope of things. Much larger studies using standardized parameters and controls need to be done. Much of the research that recommendations are based on is at best only suggestive of what more conclusive studies should be run. For instance, as study funded by a breakfast cereal manufacturer interviewed a number of people, asking them what they ate for breakfast each day. Those who ate breakfast cereal daily were compared to a group of people who ate anything else or nothing. Guess what? The study showed you should eat breakfast cereal every day! Imagine that.
Love it.... we're in our 60s and fast twice a week but this option looks fantastic and here in Italy we're fortunate to be able to access the best organically grown veg. Is fermented veg ok to include?
I'm really confused now - from what I understood from your previous videos was that 1. there's a difference between fasting and "starving"by too low calories. Fasting was said to be good and starving your body not. How is this different if you are almost halfing your calorie intake? 2. that the consumption of calories during a fast affects/cancels out the autophagy process or benefits. How does this now - I.e.over 800 calories per day fit in with that??
Thank you !! I've passed out twice on my job trying while fasting. My doctor told me not to fast anymore. It always bother me when some one says that's the only way to loose weight. After a coupe of years i found what MY body type is. Thanks again
Dr Ekberg, at 11:10, you mention no animal products. However, various dairy products, like heavy cream, sour cream, crème fraîche, butter, and ghee have very low or no protein. There are some cheeses or fermented products like yogurt or Kefir that may also give just a few grams of protein if the serving size is small enough. In those cases, aren’t those animal projusts fine?
I am just about to start day four of this method and I had 20 g of anchovies yesterday and have another 10 g scheduled for my dinner tonight. I made them fit my macros 🤷♀️. I would make a horrible vegan 😂🤣
@@gmrbowden2133 are those the anchovies that resemble sardines? Or the super salty little ones that are really just a garnish? The sardine-like anchovies are awesome, especially when served fresh in a restaurant in Italy or Greece.
@@petermadany2779 I also like the real anchovies better but in this case I went with the salted canned anchovies. I added them to my salad dressing to kind of make a Caesar salad flavor. Tonight they're going to be used as the base of my tomato sauce which is going on my spaghetti squash. So yeah basically, it just adds a hint of flavor because I can't not have some kind of meat in my life lol! 🤣😂
Ps..Doctor it would be nice if you post videos about hemorrhoids. I have felt the pain after summer started. I'm from South India. The temperature here is up to 40°c daily. Fasting lowers the pain . But your tips would be helpful. Thank you
Sounds like insuline resistance to me. Perhaps a stage before pre-diabetes. I legit had that problem so I identify myself with it. As far as I've discovered for myself, its because you have too much stress and you're experiencing oxidative stress. 1. Excersize more to get your blood flowing (really... to get rid of excess carbon and normalise oxygen levels) 2. Get yourself wayyy more anti-oxidants; you may even want to overdose on it (take multiple normal dosis over de day, start small to get a feel for it). Vitamin C supplements and green tea should do it. 3. Start doing less while you're fasting; ultimately its because you're crashing through your energy. Its burning too fast. Lower the present stress, and you'll use less energy also. 4. Go low-carb or meat diet first. This will also help restore the insuline resistance. 5. I use supplements that help calm the body. CBD oil 30% (its a stronger variant than normally available) helps normalise stress responses by suppressing it a bit in specific ways. For some reason, camille tea works for people also. 6. Water may be regulating you because it may be flushing your minerals and vitamins. You may be drinking too much water for the amount of available nutrients you have. Try dry fast first. If that's also not working..then you're simply not in a position where fasting is good for you. Go to the doctor. I did, but they couldn't find anything, so perhaps they wouldn't find anything wrong with you either. Cheers!

What are your thoughts on a "Fat fast"?
First of all: thanks for this information! But there is a question left. if someone is insulin resistant - like most of all - would it work with this higher amount of carbs? I thought if someone is insulin restistant and the insulin spikes you will not get in autophagy even the proteins are low. Am I wrong? Would you please add this information to us? Many thanks! kind regards from Vienna/Austria
@@kulishev sipping on Dill pickle juice intermittently helps greatly.

Thank you
Thanks😊
He does have a tiny bit of protein, 6gr i think in one meal
TIA!

I'm 60hrs into my 72 hr water fast. It's not easy but i know it's worth it.
Add a little salt in the water
@kerrysmith9666 I did it! I just started another one today. Somehow this one seems harder 😕
sea salt (sodium chloride) (be sure it's not iodized salt, and even better if this sea salt would be made by natural way of evaporating sea water in sun).
potassium - A MUST.
magnesium - transdermal magnesium (magnesium chloride aka magnesium oil, can make it yourself or buy) or/and magnesium supplements;
zinc - a bit of zinc supplements;
It kinda a must to use these or some of these when water fasting. Not only they help/protect your health but could/should make fasting easier, in some people much easier.
You may look up euvexia as an example of quality electrolytes supplement but I do not endorse calcium supplements and I think natural sea salt is better than Himalayan salt.
Can you please share what type of foods has zinc?@@algprei4243
All mental, correct? I find I’m really not hungry even at 80 hours, my brain wants me to eat. That drive to eat is not constant, however.
You are a wonderful humanitarian dear Dr. Ekberg..thankyou for your extremely articulate, comprehensive and educational podcasts!
I'm 55 hours in... So far this is working really well for me. Literally all I needed was some leafy greens and avocado and I'm good. I know this is not a traditional water fast, but I've never seen anything past 42 hours on my IF timer so I'm happy.
80 hours in... I. am. doing. this.

@jodiforsythe3486 2 weeks of that type of fast you will lose alot of weight.
@@jodiforsythe3486While it's only been 3 of 5 days for me, I am noticing the water release from the lower insulin, which equates to some weight, but I've been doing Keto, OMAD for a while now so my results will be less dramatic than if I was just starting all this. @@TheBrowns-LoveRIGHT! I was thinking of doing just that. I still feel the fasting energy boost too ⚡

Water fast is much easier than constantly teasing yourself with tiny bits of food, I have done multiple fast 3 days to 11 days for the last 30 years
I have done both, I don't know why but water fast or even broth fast hurts my stomach (acid burning) I have tried twice: 4 and 8 days, and had problems to refeed after each of them.

How did you replace electrolytes without breaking your fast?
@VANDERWALTTINA Dr.Sten has an electrolyte supplement available. I've never tried his but lately I've been using Liquid I.V. @VANDERWALTTINA you might be missing some potassium. I know, like you the Himalayan salt works for a min but I get leg & feet cramps after a few days on just that.
How can autophagy be a natural state on a high protein diet?
See Longo's book, The Longevity Diet)
I've tried the FMD several times with different levels of carbs.
I agree. I wouldn't lose a pound on this FMD, and I would be constantly hungry. Doing 3-day fasts with decent success.

I enjoy the route I'm on, and I pray my fellow travelers the best of luck.
i hope you like it
OMG just as i said tomorrow new month time for new challenges Dr. Ekberg this 1 will be really challenging for me, i eat a lot of legumes/nuts and seeds
Ok mission 3/4 months 1 meal every 24 hours and a 48-hour fast every week
vegan mode, I'll be eating loads of mushrooms for my vitamin D, my nutritional yeast for b12, juicing my veggies, and mixing with Seamoss
Will have to check my weight today before bed
God Bless my brothers and sisters and remember nothing good comes easy, consistency is key
You really can't get enough vitamin D from food- it's a hormone- not a Vitamin - You need sunlight or supplements.
For me too.
Me too…
This is typical, instead of trying it, you’re automatically saying that it is too difficult for yourself.
It’s basically veggies with olive oil. Why is that so difficult?
Что такое вода с электроплитами? Минеральная?
Never too late to learn something new from you. Thanks
Thank you @davew2452 for letting me know. I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching.😄
Kind of reminds me of the Cabbage Soup diet, but with a better way to figure out what should go into the soup
@@moca2611 I did this diet years ago & loved the soup! I don’t believe the original plan included chicken breast, though, & it wouldn’t be allowed on the protocol Dr. Sten is outlining here, because it’s very high in protein. Gonna make a batch ASAP! 😅

Good morning Dr. Ekberg! This information was very timely for me. I fast regularly, and always look forward to hear what you have to say. Hope you have a great Friday!
Thank you.
Right. Reminds me of the quote 100% is easy, 98% is a bi¥ch
Hey Dr Ekberg I’m not sure if you have already but I would love to see a body recomposition video about burning fat and building muscle! I am currently 277lbs and started at 337lbs! Love the vids!
That will be the true answer.
it would be helpful to have equivalence written in cups. 250 grams equals (approximately) 1 cup according to a conversion chart....
Thank you Dr. Ekberg for another fantastic session. God blessed 🙏
The longest fast I’ve done is 48 hours, I’m working my way up to a 72 hour fast. But, this is a really good way to kind of change things up once in a while 👍🏼

Even the canned veggies and tuna might be a luxury!!!
@@lisag18 I buy my meat on sale, sometimes discounted 50% because it is a day away from expiration.

One of healthiest meals
I know in USA is difficult but who can do it i suggest it.
We don't use extra virgin olive oil for frying, only for salads! For frying we use lard, clarified butter and coconut oil.

My mother made me make the soup in the garage because it smelled so bad.
Sten, please do a video on oxalates. Is this a "thing", do we need to exercise caution in how much oxalates we eat or is this overblown and should never be a concern. This would be very helpful.
Can we include coffee in this 5-day diet, Dr Ekberg? Thank you for this video ❤️
Yes black no cream or milk.
Enjoying Dr. Ekberg scientific approach to all of this, explaining cause and effect, and his alternatives to others who just tell you to fast for days.
I do this but not with veggies, instead I use meat and eggs.
The point Dr Ekberg Is making n this video is to keep your protein very low. If you’re having meat and eggs that’s the opposite of low protein.

Do you take anything to detox your body from heavy metals? I stopped getting headaches when I did.
Fantastic to have this option when you want the benefits of fasting but don't do well fasting or just want to lose less weight.

This is very helpful.
So many advisers assume that everybody can do (water) fasting. But it's not true.
Yep, I am trying to avoid nightshades. No spinach or tomatoes for me. My legs ache at night if I indulge.
Thank you Sir..for acknowledging that we are all different & not everyone can water fast ...I get really weak & dizzy after 12 hours & can bearly function🤷🏾♀️😵

Doctor's Ronda Patrick, Peter Atia and Grberial Lyons are now saying not to do extended fasting because of muscle loss/wasting is far more detrimental for longevity than any fasting benefits.

How's a 3 day water fast different from starving ?

Dr Ekberg, at 11:10, you mention no animal products. However, various dairy products, like heavy cream, sour cream, crème fraîche, butter, and ghee have very low or no protein. In those cases, aren’t those animal projusts fine?

Thank you so much, I’m in a position where strict water fasting gives me severe dehydration that electrolyte supplements can’t correct.
Sounds like insuline resistance to me. Perhaps a stage before pre-diabetes. I legit had that problem so I identify myself with it. As far as I've discovered for myself, its because you have too much stress and you're experiencing oxidative stress.
1. Excersize more to get your blood flowing (really... to get rid of excess carbon and normalise oxygen levels)
Cheers!
I find that the easiest type of fast is a sardine fast. It helps drive up ketones which seems to increase autophagy.
