Drumming in a band has always been something that's been very important to me, but there are a LOT of things I wish I had known before actually joining a band. Also practice in the dark. You end up feeling where your drums are through repetition and hear them way differently than with the lights on. Plus when you play a party and lights get kicked out or smashed, the music doesn't stop. When i got my 1st drum set i took it completely apart and put it back together again so i understood exactly what everything did and what if any limitations i had in how i set them up. You do that and something breaks through use, you know what part is broken and how to fix it way easier.
That timing displacement exercise is really fun. In a camp we had an exercise where, without metronome, one person kept the regular beat going and the other shifted a 16th note. That was one of the toughest exercises I've ever done

Great advice! 1 additional thing that has gotten me out of some sticky situations was making sure my gig bag had enough extras in it in case a bandmate forgets something (extra tuner, bandaids, gaff tape, batteries, maybe some picks, an energy bar and extra bottle of water, power cord for a lost amp cord).

My band goal is to not be a distraction or hinder the intention of the song. I am a worship drummer. I've been to two rehearsals thus far. I have never played in a live band. It's definitely been a learning experience! Looking forward to improving! Anyone considering DBO Academy- DO IT! I've been in for a month, Holy cow, the amount of knowledge gained and improvement in such a short time!

I actually just started playing with my Church's worship team 2 days ago. There was a gap in schedule and the creative arts minister asked if I'd want to do it since he knew I played drums. That was my first time playing in a "band" setting and I felt like I was going to have a heart attack until we started. Once we were going I was able to smile and have fun.

On the road, because I had extra room for carrying so much aronud, I started bringing around stuff I didn't really need, but that could save the gig, like an extra cable, or an extention. Bandmates get really thankful when you offer a solution to a problem they wouldn't even consider asking for your help to solve.

All great things to be a better drummer! When I auditioned for the band I'm in now, they told me they wanted to hear what I think belonged in the songs and not necessarily the way they were recorded, so #10 didn't really apply to that particular scenario. But generally speaking, yea they usually wanna know you can play the music properly lol

On the subject of being prepared, I tried out for a cover band a few years ago. We tried to play the song, Everlong, by Foo Fighters. It's not the most simple song to play, I did okay, but not good enough. I was told I wasn't prepared. Meanwhile, the lead singer had an i-Pad attached to his mic stand because he couldn't remember the lyrics. Saw this same band play live and he still had the i-Pad attached to his mic stand for reading lyrics. But I wasn't prepared. lol...

Option 3 was my favorite. Just because melodically there wasn't really anything happening.
Musicians must be absolutely completely driven and in love with what they do to make it happen really on any level. Talent is required sure but in the grand scheme its not the most important thing to succeed. Its a whole lot more than that. Breaks help as well but more breaks will happen with hard work. Technically speaking goes for most things in life.

Connor Denis is great example of an energetic player. That dude flies at a hundred percent for every song.
I've never used a metronome, never taken any formal classes(totally against them), and taught myself how to play while watching others. My best advice: learn the basic 4 or 5 beats, practice each beat until you know them like the back of your hand, always have your gear set up and ready to go, and practice practice practice. The best way to learn how to play is by being in a band. Remember that everyone sucks when they start out and it takes time to get better. And never let anyone tell you that your doing it wrong. Do it however you want. There is no "right" way to play. Create your own style. Practicing rolls till your hands bleed is a great way to get that down very well. Isolate and practice every part, focus on parts you dont play well and get better at them, counting in your head can help. I personally suck at math(or i did when i first started playing)but i have a good ear for tone and music has always fascinated me. Whether you want to be a pro or you just want to be solid at your craft, practice is the key. Even just 15 oe 20 minutes a day makes a huge difference.
I upped my game when i started doing things throughout my day to strengthen my muscles. Like when i go up any stairs anywhere i always raise my heel and try to walk more on my toes(to work my calves for the kick pedal), or at work i use a stress ball to strengthen my wrists for quicker more complicated hits. Whatever works for you that you can do without thinking about it can help a ton.
And for someone that doesn't like lifting weights or the monotony of working out, i find it works well to exercise naturally by being active.

I honestly just liked the basic drum part
I was in a band recently but the drummer was really annoying, he wouldn't let me and my mate tune, he drummed whenever we talked, he couldn't play in time and he never learned what he was meant to. Then he joined another band without telling us and now we need another drummer but nobody else we know can drum 😟
I've said this before, some people disagree with me. I think picking up another instrument will take your drumming to the next level. If you're a drummer learn to play guitar or something, and then maybe try to play with another drummer, so you can see the drums through the perspective of another instrumentalist. I see this as especially helpful when you're songwriting or adapting a recording for a live setting. You have more perspective to make adjustments to your drumming to achieve the best overall band performance.

I think these are very good tips. At the same time I find it is problematic to present them as "10 things every band wants from a drummer". These tips are useful but not all of them are necessary to be a good drummer. You can be a good drummer without go being talented in problem solving
or being a leader (if there is another leader in the band) for example. (Being a leader or being energetic can be even counterproductive in some settings.) If you set the bar too high you might end up scaring people away from drumming who could actually do a very good job in a band.

#10 I disagree with, because that is always based on where the band is in it's career. If you audition for a band like metallica, yes, you wanna play that song note for note, but in beginning bands who have just a couple songs, you don't even have to know the songs to have a good audition. You can have them play the structure how they play it and you can just put your own feel over it. Feel the changes in the song and change your playing accordingly. That way you also prove that you are versatile and have a good ear.

Hey man I thought the complex one kicked ass. Rule of thumb is, of there is room for it in the track (Bass player is playing whole notes, and theres lots of rhythmic space in the track) then go for it. Just dont fucking drum solo 16th notes for 4 bloody minutes is all
Band Goals?: Once we start, stay together (like family) for as long as life it self let us be. Worst case scenario, die on stage.

I'm not a drummer why am I watching this
everyone wants to say complex but they're too scared to say so.
God loves you all and you can all be saved (if not already) by just putting faith in Jesus Christ and repenting of sins (turning to God from sin and changing your mind on sin)
And you should ask for forgiveness of your sins (this can be anywhere) have a nice day

And dressing sexually/posing sexually is a sin but it's forgivable but just because a sin is forgivable doesn't mean you should commit it that's abusing Gods grace/forgiveness or it could be and the same applies for listening to music with sin in the lyrics and the same applies for insulting people even when they insult you and being toxic
And show mercy to be shown mercy by God
And good deeds are kind acts that the person doing it has no cost for it.
