Gotta say, mad respect for Fractal. Multiple times, he's seen records he was going for achieved live by other people, and he's not just a good sport about it, but actively excited that someone was able to do it. That combination of skill and community solidarity is a rare combination (at least in general, I'm not that tuned into the NES Tetris community), and that type of attitude is what keeps communities going in the long run.

The official classic tetris twitch channel was streaming a match at the time and one of the players playing heard what Alex was doing and topped out intentionally throwing a game away so everyone could watch Alex. And just when scout was well on his way to finishing the video Alex decided to break not one, but TWO- wait not even two. SEVEN WORLD RECORDS. Well seven at minimum.

It's too bad Jonas isn't here to see all of this. Personally, he was a huge spark to all of this Tetris flame that continues to keep burning brighter. I am stunned to witness the insane feats that have been achieved since the Tetris tournament began. The Tetris story from the beginning to present day is just absolutely stunning from birth in Russia all those years ago to now. Can't wait to see what else is in store for the legendary saga of Tetris and all those who continue to shatter expectations. RIP Jonas. Great video!

I really love how some world records ended with something that caught the players offguard, Eric's first dusk, Andy's first Charcoal, Scuti's first crash, and Alex's first 810 lines being Greeeen, not Charcoal 😭. Now that everyone knows that after 810 Greeeeen, nothing can stop you from Rebirth (at least on Gym), everyone should be prepared for our first Rebirth on Gym!
Also I remember Eric's video did say that you can dodge Charcoal 810 lines by starting at a lower level on OG card, I wonder if the same applies for Gym?

    • @alecrutz956

That guy seems like a really, really good person. Stopping his own stream to stream Alex's instead and have his audience watch and cheer Alex on too. Instead of being upset at being beaten or jealous or anything, Fractal gets excited and happy for his fellow players when they beat records and etc. That's a good dude. Major props to Alex, man, and he's a TEEN! 🎉 That was INSANE to watch. I 100% believe he'll beat Rebirth.

For all the photorealism and voice acting and complexity of modern games, I still think Tetris is probably the most perfect distillation of gaming. It’s so incredibly simple that it just resonates across all cultures and ages. And seeing people do things well is compelling, whether it be jumping off mountains or obliterating the high score of a 40-year-old video game!

the tetris competitive scene is a complete anomaly when it comes to esports. I've never seen a comp scene where it feels like people aren't competing against each other, but every competitor is spurring each other on to the ultimate goal of "beating" the game, where there aren't "winners" and "losers" in a tournament, the whole thing seems like a positive sum game that reinforces the absolutely fenominal community it has, with video games being adjacent to a lot of online abuse and negativity, to find something so against the grain when it comes to esport stereotypes puts faith in humanity for me as proof we can make something good that lasts. I hope the competitive tetris scene lives on forever into the future, and every person in its legacy be remembered wholeheartedly.

This is the same vibe that the national spelling bee in Washington DC has every year. Ultimately, it’s every contestant against the dictionary not against each other. Having been there two times with my son, it is the absolute coolest “competitive” experience. I am looking forward to going to see CTWC in Pasadena for the first time this year and seeing that same healthy competition.
