And just when scout was well on his way to finishing the video Alex decided to break not one, but TWO- wait not even two. SEVEN WORLD RECORDS. Well seven at minimum.
The competition is fierce, but at the same time so supportive and encouraging. They genuinely want to see each other push the limits of what's possible. This is peak sportsmanship.
I've heard people say that Mario 64's community, where many players only go for records to prevent specific other players from getting them, a good thing because it's "encouraging competition." This proves that's all nonsense. The healthiest community is the one where everyone is motivated to play and support each other, because it's the record that matters, not the person who gets it.
Probably the best gaming community I have ever been in. Haven't met a single person who's known as an abuser in the Tetris community either. No, Jayne Secker doesn't count, you'd be a lot worse than her to be a genuine abuser. Worst sportmanship I've ever seen here is merely a pout and not threatening to attack the other person.
Love how you took the time to explain all the inside references within the Tetris community. Really highlights how alive their community is. And what an amazing story. Alex is in the zone.
@@ninjaydes Considering how many times you have to move your hands at near inhuman speeds, I think this might actually qualify for a sport, at least as much as cheerleading is a sport, oh wait.
Gotta give massive props to Fractal for being genuinely excited for his friend and probably rival to get to the 10 million score before him. He seemed sincerely proud and that's not something most competitors share
This is different from sports and other types of competition. They are competing but are also learning from and supporting each other. Techniques and insights are often shared and improved upon.
Fractal did that for several other Tetris greats like blue scuti when scuti beat him. Dude is just chill like that. Already a legend, got nothing to prove.
The first time I was in VC with Alex Thach, he heard an ice cream truck outside, so while staying in vc and with his camera on, he ran outside with a five dollar bill, bought an ice cream cone, and ran back inside. Truly a master of all arts, a mega master you could say.

this was the most well fleshed out, perfectly structured documentary i’ve seen by far. so incredibly satisfying to watch and it definitely kept me engaged for a long time. keep up the great work bro 🔥
I had no intention of watching a 40 minute video today. But after what felt like 15 minutes the video was over and I was at the edge of my seat the entire time. Great job with this one.
Same. I only clicked to see what it was about because it got cross posted in another community in reddit (Osu!) due to how many similarities they both have: looks, voice, way of speaking, back to back accomplishments and proving everyone how good he is, etc... One of the most hype videos I've watched in a while!
The Spirit Bomb of Tetris Power--the combined energy of everyone, including Jonas Neubauer. Jonas Neubauer is the King Kai of Tetris, watching over the players as they achieve scores unfathomable in years past.
The completely straight faced delivery of "and he takes a milk shower" absolutely killed me edit: Also the staircase visuals area really well done, going above and beyond for this type of video!
I loved alex's attitude throughout the whole game, and the complete lack of seriousness. I am so glad you captured that both explicitly and with subtle editorial decisions, you really have grown as a filmmaker. A fitting piece on an amazing month of Tetris.
We moved like molasses in world record progression for decades. Starting from 2018 we worked our way up the ladder and the more recent world records have been quite crazy to say the least. But now the ground shakes, the CRTs switch off just before falling. The couches overturn. 2009 - 1 million 2016 - 1.2 million 2020 - 1.4 million 2024Q1 - 16 million. That's right, I removed the dot inbetween. It's that fucking impressive.
fractal seems so wholesome. I remember previously seeing how happy he was when the first game crash happened, and I loved seeing him shoutout alex ts stream
When he won some tournament he gave this really wholesome speech taking a moment thanking the many parents driving the kids there and being supportive etc. heart warming dude 😊
I can honestly say, I don’t think a video game has ever experienced such a massive JUMP in progression the way Tetris has in the last year. It’s insane.
"Is the game dead?" 16-year-old beats Jonas Neubauer. "Is the game dead?" 16-year-old teaches you rolling. "Is the game dead?" 13-year-old crashes the game. "Is the game dead?" 15-year-old breaks so many world records, "Is the game dead?" Never question if Tetris is dying, it will always find a way to shock you.
Alex T single-handedly took us out of the Plushie Era of Tetris and into the Parmesan Era. For this you have our eternal gratitude. All hail the champ!
Why is the production so high quality? I haven't touched Tetris once in my life but after a couple of your videos now I actually feel somewhat invested in the happenings of Tetris. Incredible videos, seriously.
Right?! I have no special interest in Tetris whatsoever and yet this video just touched me, somehow. The storytelling is amazing! And to think this isn't even a month ago!
Same even though I actually keep losing interest. Yet these breakthrough videos keep dragging me back and exploding my mind ever since the Boom tetris for Jeff meme came out lol When someone finally hits rebirth, I hope Game Scout compiles all of these videos onto one epic movie. Because that's the end right? Other than getting higher and higher world records, there's no next revolutionary chapter past rebirth? Unless...
Another thing I love about this community is everyone is so supportive of one another and encourages others to break their records with no bitterness or jealousy whatsoever. Truly an incredible community and I am happy to be part of it as a fan even though I do not currently play Tetris. Just a pleasure to be around so many great people who are making this community grow and thrive more and more each day. Thanks to all of you!
I’ve heard this sort of sentiment a million times over the past many years, and it continues to be true. It’s astounding to me that a community could be that wholesome and tight knit, even with entirely new players rising to the top, but here we are.
I'm not Tetris guy, never was, don't think I'll ever be, but you lot are a tight knit community of people devoted to competing on you beloved game and that is wonderful to see. I salute you.
That illustration with the stairway to rebirth, with level markers, color schemes, and bombs is so very helpful to understand what's happening. Congrats on finding such a great way to visualize it!
I love how this kid is like totally a gamer kid of this age.. listening to him is more entertaining than half of the tetris players. He has a knack for it. He really should be streaming every game haha
18:57 "Eyes, wide, open!" You don't even need to be a fan of Tetris or competitive gaming (of which I am neither, so this is sound speaking) to appreciate how great this world of competitive Tetis is, thanks to the structure of this video. I absolutely love how the two top rivals, are more star-crossed best friends that are geographically stretched, rather than the aggressive stigma associated with the term, "rivals". Look at the one way the one champion pauses his game to check on his competition. Then has a giddy laugh of pride one has for a little brother, when his "eyes wide open" quote is rechanted. I just absolutely love it! 😁
I get the impression that a lot of games have this relationship between rivals, all the top runners being absolute bros to each other, it's super wholesome. ❤
I didn't think I'd sit through a 40 minute video document of tetris but here I am. Great video, amazing presentation, and awesome delivery!! Everyone mentioned in that video is amazing!
Same here! I have no interest in Tetris, never really even liked the game back in the day (when it first came out). But this video was absolutely superbly well done and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!
I don’t play Tetris and I couldn’t even understand half of the things explained about the game but this was sooo entertaining to watch. Learning about Alex T’s journey made me tear up when he finally beat the world record. Felt like a proud mom😅 Such a legend!
@@sunte91 Probably not lmfao. I already know of April being the worst of the worst in a torrential workload of having to write so much stuff because Tetris players were beating world records like punching bags, that started I think in the runup to festive season. i just got back from being a season 2 TWOWer and rising a whopping 8,103 ranks. And yet I somehow still missed the premiere of this long anticipated video.
You're fucking joking. When Scout uploads a video it's a blessing and a curse. The curse? He won't be let off easy for long - someone immediately breaks a world record and that's it, another thing to add onto his bucketlist. It happens again when Scout's well on his way to finishing the damn video.
31:44 "Such a moment is cause for celebration, and so AlexT starts chugging parmesean cheese and pouring it on his head, he gets some shampoo to clean up, and then takes a milk shower." Laughed for a good 10 minutes straight.
It's too bad Jonas isn't here to see all of this. Personally, he was a huge spark to all of this Tetris flame that continues to keep burning brighter. I am stunned to witness the insane feats that have been achieved since the Tetris tournament began. The Tetris story from the beginning to present day is just absolutely stunning from birth in Russia all those years ago to now. Can't wait to see what else is in store for the legendary saga of Tetris and all those who continue to shatter expectations. RIP Jonas. Great video!
This is the most hype i've ever been about Tetris, this video is that well put together, thank you and thanks to Alex, the actual goat. ... Now for the salty part, I have to write it somehow or I'm gonna go insane. Saying "this run does not count as a legitimate record" because Alex somehow avoided game crash without knowing it is the absolute most brain dead sentence you can ever write about any Tetris run. The run is there, on the same game every other player is playing, livestreamed to your face, him having this knowledge or not doesn't change this fact. The level of delusion should not be possible in this universe. I was mad the first time this was mentioned in the video, now after the run is done I'm actually going crazy
You're absolutely right that it should count as the world record, however, you're wrong about him not knowing he was skipping the crash. He's playing on Tetris Gym, instead of an original cart, so know full well he's skipping the crashes (the uncapped score is a dead giveaway for this) - in the video he's just trolling, pretending that he doesn't know that it won't crash. If anything it makes what he does even more impressive, just spewing utter garbage the WHOLE time whilst playing games that all Tetris players before him could only imagine. You should check out the streams or full VODs, they're really fun and FULL of him just trolling and generally being wild.
This is so well made, it turned something as trivial and frivolous as an old videogame into a harrowing account of the struggle against old code, physical limitation, community and mental wherewithal. Brilliant
The last few months have been absolutely balls-nuts in the NES Tetris scene. DECEMBER The dark levels finally fall. BlueScuti narrowly avoids a crash. BlueScuti crashes. 6.7 million points. JANUARY Fractal and Andy crash. Andy 8.9 mil record. MARCH Scout uploads a video but almost immediately Alex narrowly misses 10 million But then Alex gets 10 rollovers APRIL Scout is very well into finishing the video but it happens again Alex crashes Alex progresses into 15 million far faster than the 16 million Alex gets another slightly higher 16 million We used to think Jonas Neubauer or Joseph Saelee was the most inhumanly good of the big Tetris players but now despite some very fierce competition I think it's Alex.
@@DashWallkick Who knows maybe they are going to mess around and be trolling us again and get other NES Tetris world records that are NOT rebirth, before going for rebirth. That's what it feels like Alex has done.

The staircase with the players leading the funny little grey T piece was a cool touch. Also the way you set up the 810 line greeeen level made it such a horrible revalation lol. The music you played during it made it so dreadful. Good video as always
Scout, THANK YOU! This video is inspiring me like very few things ever have! The crazy thing is that during this was uploading, I had the craziest hour long freestyle while listening to DJ Shadow's Endtroducing for the first time. (usually I don't really freestyle, as I'm more of a producer/songwriter) I thought i was recording it but my phone fucked up and I've neer felt so heartbroken and inspired at the same time. Now I see Alex, who also didn't record the game of his life (up to that point), but knowing he could, inspired him to grind and get redemption. I've never felt as inspired to reach my potential! Scout, Alex and the positivity of the entire community is inspiring not only within tetris, but can inspire anyone in whatever their personal goals are in life. Thank you and to anyone still reading, THIS is the moment to start changing the world (or at least your world) in your own way!

Each and every attempt to do so will not only end in failure, but utterly backfire.
@@vespliyou cannot compare tetris to GD bro... In one game you need reflexes, planning, full focus, minimal adjustments in matter of tenth of seconds, 3 whole different playstiles, developed over 40 years, knowing your limits, if you can afford and risk to play aggressively or stay on your toes playing carefully but with a lower ceiling. On the other hand you have a game where the only thing that matters is when and for how long you're keeping your thumb on a screen.
I love how the other Tetris players are so supportive! They don’t say anything like “oh just luck” or “I could get a higher score.” But they say, (like fractal) “I’m happy for him, he said he was unmotivated so I’m happy he got past that.” Or something supportive like that. Congrats Alex.T!

For all the photorealism and voice acting and complexity of modern games, I still think Tetris is probably the most perfect distillation of gaming. It’s so incredibly simple that it just resonates across all cultures and ages. You don't understand. Now that people have access to artificial intelligence they're just cheating and you haven't caught on. There's all new tools for cheating that have popped up at the same time as the public getting AI. It will take a while for youtube to expose that too.
Bro, he doubled the record, I don't want to hear about it...he's clearly the best. I'm sure he will be more than motivated to break this and have another video made about him that receives millions of views. Congrats, legend.
i think its because players see it in a different perspective, generally they don't see other players as competition, their only "enemy"/opponent is the game itself, as in they are all in the same team.

Agreed great storytelling!
Same. I only clicked to see what it was about because it got cross posted in another community in reddit (Osu!) due to how many similarities they both have: looks, voice, way of speaking, back to back accomplishments and proving everyone how good he is, etc... The Spirit Bomb of Tetris Power--the combined energy of everyone, including Jonas Neubauer.
Jonas Neubauer is the King Kai of Tetris, watching over the players as they achieve scores unfathomable in years past.
The completely straight faced delivery of "and he takes a milk shower" absolutely killed me
edit: Also the staircase visuals area really well done, going above and beyond for this type of video!
2009 - 1 million
2016 - 1.2 million
2020 - 1.4 million
2024Q1 - 16 million. That's right, I removed the dot inbetween. It's that fucking impressive.
It's honestly a breath of fresh air since most speed-running/ score-hunting videos are very serious feeling. His attitude is so powerful!
To be fair, keeping relaxed IS crucial for marathons like this.
What an awesome, inspiring, and really well done video. Thanks for putting the energy into this one and recognizing a legend!

it is INSANE how quickly we've gone from "yeah you can do this funny thing with ur hands to move pieces faster" to THIS absolute insanity.

Brilliant

Why did i just watch a 40 minute video essay on NES tetris, and why did i enjoy it?
For all the photorealism and voice acting and complexity of modern games, I still think Tetris is probably the most perfect distillation of gaming. It’s so incredibly simple that it just resonates across all cultures and ages. And seeing people do things well is compelling, whether it be jumping off mountains or obliterating the high score of a 40-year-old video game!
Because it inspires. The actual activity doesn’t matter. The emotion behind it does.

Fractal is easily the most positive e-sports player. He's such a good dude- It's nice to see in a sea of toxicity in other e-sports.
i think its because players see it in a different perspective, generally they don't see other players as competition, their only "enemy"/opponent is the game itself, as in they are all in the same team.
