    Great video. I'm a bassist who tends to play ahead of the beat at times. I've played with some excellent drummers who would accommodate and beautifully lay back a bit. Then before I knew it, they somehow managed to subtly recalibrate my push. Man, I love excellent drummers. A bass players brother in the groove.

      Develop your own inner clock, stop leaning on the drummer. This is endemic in today's players. Check out Miles great quintet with Herbie, Ron and Tony. Nobody leaned on any body else. That's what made this group great.

    • @mtp4430
      @mtp4430 2 роки тому +27

      @@victorparedes4863 I never said I didn't have an inner clock. When the adrenaline flows, I tend to push the beat a bit depending on the situation. And I have found that drummers who are great time keepers are able to make the adjustment to snap me right out of it. It goes both ways. I've righted drummers who are either lagging or a bit ahead of the beat also. It's called teamwork. Teammates pick each other up. A coach doesn't tell the player to just work on his end of it and let the rest of the players worry about their end of it. That's not what a team is, and that's not what a band does.

    I wish I could find a drummer as good as this guy. He is so subtle, everything sounds beautiful. The amount of times I have to ask a drummer to tone it down on gigs. Do they not understand they play a LOUD instrument and that being a good drummer is not only about technique but also about control. Choosing the drums is like choosing a pit bull as a pet, not a bad thing per se, but if you don't train it properly it is going to f*** up the picnic!

    • @AndreasDelleske
      @AndreasDelleske 2 роки тому +1

      This. Especially as a singer, your overtones (the sound quality) often get blocked by drummers playing too much rides or at the wrong moments. We and the audience need the high frequencies above singing range to always recalibrate not only the pitch (that should work on its own) but the expression too and we're only able to do that when the drummer leaves enough space. I don't care much what other instruments do (they can come in whenever they want) but I follow the base most and the drummer should listen to me, maybe even know my text and phrasing but also be in dialogue, pulling / pushing with the base. Leave some space goddammit :) If you can pull it off, you're awesome with brushes, hihat and snare alone :) you need the rides to control the lagging brass but not me :)

    • @webstercat

    great discussion on "time". being a drummer i've heard too many times how I am the sole time keeper, but i see it more as the band is the time, everyone a touch ahead, behind or on the beat...then the bass and drums in their zone so the other layers can flow on top...thats what makes esp live music so cool....when the band is locked...thats when magic happens....

    • @darwinsaye
      @darwinsaye 2 роки тому

      Exactly how I feel about it. If any of the other players lose the plot if the drums stop, they need to either up their game or be replaced. Everyone in the band should be able to retain the time in their head.

    As a drummer--for 55 years--the first place anyone in the band looks for a time issue is the drummer. This is in rock, jazz, any genre. But when playing jazz, I always tried to lock-in with bass player by placing the ride cymbals pattern a nano-second behind the bass player's "walk'. I was taught this is what creates that great swing tension. Been doing that since I learned it and it was a revelation. But I will struggle playing something like Jeep's Blues, which is so behind the beat it is like from last week...:) Great site, great job, great post. Thanks!

    The point at 4:00 is phenomenal, and important to understand. When the drummer does that rapid walk with the high hats, it makes the bassist accelerate, sometimes to the point where the bass remains awkwardly ahead of the drums, and you end up with 1.5 rhythm sections, instead of exactly 1.0 rhythm section. Philosophically, I believe in having only one rhythm section, but that’s just me, because there’s no way to confuse the soloist. Giving me a fresh breath with crash cymbal, and centering me, is exactly what I want my drummer doing.

    This is a delight. Bottom line is there are many different ways to groove between drums and bass (or different rhythm section configurations) the most important thing is to get on the same page with whomever you're playing with; sometimes that means literally talking thru it, and analyzing your groove together. You also have to have an awareness of your own feel in relation to the metronome.

    Acoustic Sound !!
    The bass, which is not overly electrically amplified, naturally decays the sound produced by the air vibrations inside its wooden body.
    The drums, which are not excessively muted, spread not only the attack sound of hitting head but also the sustaining sound into the space.
    Many drummers these days play with large drum sets with an excessive number of tom-toms, but for me, this simple 3-piece set is just enough and there is nothing short of it.

    I have never heard of the bass being the keeper of tempo. I was always taught that the drums keep time. However, I have been put in the position, time after time, where I, as the bass player, had to keep the tempo. I have even gotten into physical altercations with drummers who couldn't keep time, to the point where I had to call them out, on the bandstand. That's one of my pet peeves: drummers who couldn't keep proper time. So, I pride myself on being a good timekeeper.

    GREAT LESSON
    I ALWAYS HAVE BELIEVED THAT THE BASS IS THE FOUNDATION FOR JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING IN MUSIC.
    BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER TO ALLOW SPACE FOR THE BASS TO BREATHE IN EVERY DIRECTION.
    THIS CAN ONLY BE ACCOMPLISHED BY THE DRUMMER AND BASS PLAYER PLAYING THROUGH CHARTS BY THEMSELVES FOR HOURS UNTIL THEY ARE THINKING AND FEELING LIKE ONE.
    LIKE REACTING LIKE WATER OR AIR TO THEIR SURROUNDINGS!!!
    REMEMBER THAT IT IS OK TO PUSH AND PULL ON EACH OTHER. AS LONG AS YOU BOTH KNOW EACH OTHERS CAPABILITIES. YOU MUST BE FLUENT AND KNOW YOUR INSTRUMENT AND ALWAYS THINK AS ONE. THEN YOU CAN ADD THE REST OF THE RYTHUM SECTION ONE BY ONE!!!
    NOTHING LIKE A MACHINE THAT HUMMS WITH VERY LITTLE SHAKING!!!

    To me, when it comes to who's gonna play before/after the beat is a stylistical question. In straight ahead jazz the bass tends to push whereas the drums has a lot of freedom. In punk rock, everybody's ahead of the beat (WTF?), in prog metal everybody's on the beat, in lounge jazz the bass falls way behind, etc etc. Kinda fun to explore, what are the ingredients of a style.

  • @markop.1994

    So what im getting from this... it seems that the bass is more dictating the subdivisions and how much swing there is as opposed to the actual downbeat.
    Great vid by the way! Love the way you guys play.
    I saw a vid recently of a producer talking about the wave forms of drum and bass sounds and how different producer line them up different ways on the millisecond level. Its like wether or not to line up the beginning of the sound or its first volume peak with the other instruments in the mix in relation to the down beat. Either way i think the subtle discrepancies of perfect-imperfect rhythm are super important for all musicians and seldom talked about.
    Great job again!

I actually thought that was a compliment to PM, he had space it seemed to me. Tristano, who I dug, dictated time on the piano and Keith Jarrett later said that bugged him about Lennie’s playing; Lennie always playing right on the beat.

    ❤❤Finally, the great musicians , talking about ,how to create good rhythm and swinging bass & drums.
    Thank you so much.
    In my opinion, good sound is when bass sits on the beat .It means not on the top of the beat but in the middle, with very strong pizzicato(attack) and swinging hi-hat and ride cymbal - "cutting on" the top of the beat -"faster". Good example - louis Hayes ,Art blakey many other .............
    Otherwise the drummer feels , like he doesn't sits on his stool and loses balance, and it forces him to play on ride cymbal & hi-hat only, like Grady Tate said " putting the jujitsu move on Ray "(Oh Greatest Roy's Sound).
    When bassist plays on top of the beat(pushing) and drummer stop playing on his ride cymbal for a moment ,for to play on snare or toms , it sounds like, the drummer is out of rhythm and time...
    We need to find the golden middle. No need to fight on the stage, just listen each other.
    If bass and drums are together on top of the beat the temp will be accelerated....
    of course, all this sounds like a theory, but everything should happen in real time and the most important thing is MUSIC ,FEELING .............
    love and peace everybody❤

I try not to follow as that starts to impact on tempo. I think it's a matter of getting used to that feeling of being pulled along rather than me being the driving pulse.

    Bass has the tempo by the balls at the end of the day. But everyone in the band is responsible for tempo no matter what, and can all influence it good or bad. The drummer also gets taste of tempo control on set ups and fills.

      Bass can push a tempo or relax a tempo. Dynamics can relax a tempo & push it when necessary. wn bass is following vocalist or soloist is working, the base can push or drag

      @@mikerobinson9030 agree with that too. an outstanding drummer gives the bass player some wiggle room in terms of their tempo and dynamics, because that means the drummer is listening closely.

    I think the "drummer follows the bassist" thing is more about survival mode, getting through the gig without major issues, than it is about the high-level music making these guys are talking about. An inexperienced bassist playing a quarter-note walking bass line will probably keep steadier time than an inexperienced drummer.

      Yeah, as a bass player for more than a decade, I started playing drums now, and I kind suck at staying on time lol, but it's mostly because I missjudge what I'm able to play, like the time to reach and hit the way I want, fills are a nightmare 😔
