Yes , it's easy to forget that Festool's prices are out of range for many with living costs or income situations that are not necessarily one's own situation . It's good to see all bases covered by a reviewer Peter.

The problem with a lot of this white label stuff is the designers clearly don't understand the intended use, they're just building a product for the sake of selling a product. The same goes for the resellers, who don't seem to have much input in terms of customising their own designs. If you ask the reseller a question or for a specification that can't be answered by looking at the spec sheet, they'll either guess the answer and hope for the best, or be honest and tell you they simply don't know the answer. Some of the kit is built to a very poor spec too. I once bought the Excel 50L shop vac as it appeared identical to the Lumberjack for £20 less. It caused the workshop radio to loose signal completely when switched on so I opened it up and found that to cut costs they omitted the arc suppression capacitors that protect the switch and motor brushes and prevent electrical sparks, and the RFI suppresion capacitors that help suppress radio interferance caused by the inductive load of the motor. They refunded it no questions asked, but didn't take the feedback onboard and I'd bet there are a lot of those machines out there.

I can’t entirely agree. The manufacturers - lets suggest Chinese for the most part - will make whatever the buyers (the resellers) want. They take a basic design - for instance a vacuum cleaner - and then add or subtract whatever the buyer asks for. That does mean that machines may share a common body but the quality of the internals will vary according to the required specification. It makes choosing which colour/brand of vacuum cleaner very difficult for the end-user. The same principle applies to higher cost items such as table saws, planers etc unless you buy from a seller who one sells what they make.
In terms of buying the finished article - such as this cheap MFT table - I do think the resellers make to a price knowing that a) it’s not the perfect solution and b) that most hobbyists can either live with its foibles or spend some time happily fixing the problems.
I’ve been lucky enough to be able to spend almost what I want on tools through the years. I have borne in mind my usage and therefore, for instance, haven’t justified Altendorf but have gone for industrial quality machines. However, I think we have to understand that woodworking appeals to so many and there is a significant proportion who operate on very strict budgets. I suggest that it is wonderful that you can make things with relatively cheap tools - making is good for the maker and the beneficiary.
If you do have surplus tools, please consider giving them to the various charities that exist to help rehabilitate people who have suffered trauma. My personal favourite is the military charities but all of them are worthy causes

      @ashleycox432 4 місяці тому

@@theofarmmanager267 That is how the white label rebadging works, but there are resellers who simply take those standard designs and sell them without modification simply because they look like a competing product. There's a difference between, for example, Excel who generally can't give you much useful information on their products, and Axminster, who sell similar white label products under their various sub brands but who do invest in their R&D and who not only know the products inside out, but can generally supply spares. The chinese manufacturers will make whatever a reseller wants, but the reseller has to know what they want, or have some level of knowledge to understand how the products work.
I think the availability of budget-friendly tools is a wonderful thing, so long as the cost cutting doesn't impact safety. There are some tools that should never be purchased cheaply or from an 'off brand' - router bits for example. Every tool has a drawback regardless of how much you spend - I don't think I've ever found a 'perfect' tool for any money. But the end user, who on seeing 2 visually identical machines will likely choose the lower cost option unless there is an obvious reason to go for the more expensive machine, may be putting themselves at risk or may be buying an inferior product that will fail sooner. Take the Excel and Lumberjack vacuums- the parts that were missing from the Excel cost pennies in volume, so there's no excuse to leave them out as it would maybe add about 50P, plus a bit of production (which the factory does anyway) to the product cost. The difference is a machine that will probably fail in 6 months, compared to a machine that will last years, and a machine that may spark and start a workshop fire vs a machine that won't.

I made my own for the price of the mdf sheet (well had to get my money's worth from the PARF guide system I bought) I just set it on a pair of Stanley saw horses and it doubles as a router table. It's really handy for site jobs and fits easily in the boot of my Fiesta along with the horses and tools. I use it with a 1m Makita rail and the Dave Stanton dog locks it's so versatile.

One of my portable work surfaces is Vika’s two-fold Workbench/Scaffold, and while not an MFT, some features have made me appreciate having purchased it. The pros are its reversible use, integrated power, durable construction, light weight, and good stability. The cons are no dog holes or clamping rails, no height adjustment (holes could be drilled, I suppose), swing-out leg braces, no linking to other work surfaces, and no accessories. Also, the reversible aspect creates limited space between the surfaces, so I’ve not drilled dog holes because clamps will not easily fit. Seeing the workstations you’ve reviewed has made me think adding some slots to the Vika would improve it. Thank you for the reviews!

Very objective overview and totally agree on the price Vs performance perspective. Seems like a good option for people getting into it as a hobby or those on a tight budget. If there were no budget options for tools in general and only the very best it would be very difficult to get started for a lot of people. That being said products existing just for the sake of it without much thought into how it would be used is a big bare of mine. Seems like for the most part this bench is very usable if not exceptional.

I have the Vevor, I use it often it's fine but I seem to pop the leg locks off and it has collapsed on me once because of this. The clamps that came with it have no holding power and unscrewing them everytime to use them was frustrating so I got some that have a quick release, magnum brand and they work much better with this system. My shop is quite small so I would recommend this to other small shop carpenters

Well you certainly have a lot of choices for worktops benches over there. I guess I'll keep using my two, mostly plastic top, DeWalt folding benches. They use about the same weird hole spacing and size for their dog holes. I have a bunch of Kreg dogs and clamps that fit these tables. Their great knock about tables that I've had for about 5 years now. Their covered n paint drill holes and saw cuts. The legs are a fixed height, but they only cost me $70 at the time I bought them at Home Depot in a post Christmas close out sale.

What a great little portable workbench. Even if you have a full sized bench at home its great to take to the room you are working in. Great pity they did not have a t track in the sides which they still could have used to hold storage tubs or the 4x2 brackets, or even to join two tables like on a tracksaw track.
Few things i noticed I felt was missed.
    1. The joining section for two tables sadly sit higher than the table surface when in place and should have been kept flush.
    2. I did not see any wall hook system as would be great to have the option when folded to hook over two bolts to store on the Garage wall. Would have been nice if those 4x2 brackets provide could double up to do this.
Great price, I paid 80 quid for an MFT insert when I made my own bench so this comes in at a great price all in.

That joint sitting higher than the worktop surface is the only thing that bothers me when I'm assembling cabinets on them. I think I will raise the MDF worktop by putting some spacers between the MDF and the brackets that hold the MDF.
Oh and I attached a piece of 2x2 on the wall and the bench can be nicely hanged on it, since the inner face of the aluminium bars are flat.

Hey Peter, another great video! You said you didn't know if the bench dog hole spacing would be maintained if adding another bench... You could measure the left hole to the left edge and then the right hole to the right edge and add the numbers together and then divide by 76. If you get a whole number...

    • @10MinuteWorkshop

On a recent project for myself, I forced myself (helped by the fact the tablesaw was being used as a storage area.......)to build it using just the tracksaw and MFT. However; once the cutting was done I really didn't need the MFT, as an MFT, just a smaller assembly table so this would have been perfect. Why use the big pickup when a VW bug will do?

I think that is the main reason I wouldn't buy it. For all the rest it would meet my expectations and needs.

@@10MinuteWorkshop Thanks for your explanation. My cheap foldable workmate had some 20 mm holes in the table top . The material (MDF?) was quite poor so after af ter a couple of years the table top broke. I made a new top with a 20 mm forstner bit from a left over of a kitchen counter. That worked out quite well. After that I
made a small MFT top of a melamine board as a replacable insert for my work bench top. I wasn't hindered that time by any knowledge of spacing.

I don't think I would like to cut on (or cut through, I did that once with a saw horse when the blade depth slipped on my saw) the work table top so I would be protecting the top with a couple pieces of scrap, the lack of t-track is the bigger issue. I have that same issue with my Bora Centipede. Cheap MFT is a much bigger problem in the USA, I'm waiting for Powertec or WEN to get in the game here in the USA. The Centipede top is pretty nice, for what it is, and relatively cheap, and since the hole pattern is 20mm on a 96mm grid, but the legs are, as you pointed out, a bit silly.
