I am the Sarah that asked the question on the 10MWplus forum. This is not a paid or financially rewarded post on this video. This is going to save me loads of time and make my life so much safer in the workshop. Thank you, Peter. Normally, I don’t comment on the normal UA-cam videos as 10MWplus members get the ad-free versions! Regardless of that, the 10MWplus subscription is one of the best subscriptions I have for content, exchange of ideas etc. -S-
Thanks Sarah! I’ve said before, it’s the conversations that we have that help shape the public-facing UA-cam videos that are made. Really appreciate you being part of 10MW Plus! 🙌👍
Grand Idea Peter, but on the North America side of the pond, MDF thinner than 12mm is not easy to source, most common is 12mm and most places just standard 18mm MDF, where I live. But several years ago, I did find another solution to extend the support of the track saw rail (I use Festool) on both sides of the cut, and expand the 24-inch width of my 1080 MFT, to increase cross cut capacity from 22-inches to 30-inches using the 1080mm rail, and have saw support for both sides of the cut. The solution was the DashBoard PAW system Track Stars and Rob’s Spiral Dog, which connects to the track slot under the rail and slides into the slots/holes in the Track Star, adding about 4-inches to each side of the MFT top. The Track Stars replace the hinge system, and are a less expensive alternative to Rob’s excellent Rail Hinge/Guide system, whilst expanding the cut width beyond what the hinge setup offers. Cheers
alholson-smith7631 Im thinking of using my thicknesser planer to do what you suggested. Personally I don't like mdf although its broadly used. I have recycled timber and may use the tracksaw to cut at the dimension to suit the track. Some of my brothers equipment is blocking my thicknesser. It becomes a mission to clear things away when I want to do some work.
Now THAT is a good idea. When I make mine I think I'll change the 6mm alignment to use one of my left over guide rail connector rods They've been sitting in the spares bin since I converted to the self centering rods.
Great idea and an interesting collaboration. I have several damaged Festool guide rails that someone gave me that were slightly damaged. I am going to cut them to be a starting pad for my Festool rail. I may use some of your ideas to give it a little extra support . Thanks to you both!
This is fantastic! I do like these innovative solutions you present to us Peter, you do so much to enable us hobbyists on a budget to be able to do quality work as good as the pros.
I just can't get enough of this channel. Would you consider doing a series on basic furniture building with a track saw? I know you mostly work in plywood, which is awesome, but would you consider doing a hardwood project?
Thank you! I have a couple of ideas for something like that; I started a 'basic build' series last year that i need to finish first, but I'm sure I could figure something out. 👍
Great video. I’ve been watching your videos for a while now and I’ve learned a lot from you. You do an excellent job at explaining the process of how to build and about the tools you use!
Thanks, I hope so too! I took a bit of time off in early January, but have been posting weekly as always before that, and since. Did you hit the bell alongside notifications? That usually get the message through when I post something new. 👍
On the subscribe button, change from "Personalised", which is the "whatever the algorithm decides" default to "All" and yoy'll get a notification for each video.
Naive question, but if you're going through that much effort to create a launch pad, how much more effort would it be to create an exact length DIY track for your particular workbench, like the DIY MFT?
Peter that is brill... I have just realised that Makita 18v Circular saws will fit on tracks...just ordered a 1m rail, but this may come in handy... Nice one (Sarah)
Peter, well timed video. As the Seattle weather allow,. I'm re-siding my house. Yesterday I was using my small cordless DeWalt circular saw. I actually said to myself. I wish I'd bought that small Bosch circular saw Peter Millard has. I'm using an old garden potting bench as my work surface and experiencing the issues that come with that. Best Regards,

Thanks a lot, Peter! I've been binging your videos. I commented on a different video of yours, and just ordered the 150/5 based on it. In just 1 month I went from no Festool to my s/o sounding the alarm haha. I am currently looking to add a dust extractor to the collection (I only have a shop vac), but am struggling to figure out which size to get. I was thinking between the 26/36/36 autoclean, with either the festool cyclone or the oneida dust deputy. I don't have a main dust collector as I don't really have a designated shop area, so this would be my only dust collection for the time being. Thanks!
Thanks! The 26/36 are great vacs, but the Midi is the one that ticks all the boxes for me. The suction is pretty much the same across all the Festool vacs, so really you’re only buying additional capacity. 👍

Could the launchpad replace the DIY MFT bench extension? Another use I see for two flat versions - if I could find some material the same thickness as my Powertec rail - would be rail extensions for trimming new anti-splinter strips.
@@10MinuteWorkshop I haven’t built the extension for the MFT yet. I altered your plan by adding t-track to both sides of the MFT. I plan on building two extensions, one for each side of the MFT, for making up to almost 1400mm cuts.
Nice one Peter ! Is there any modification that can be done on the dowel locator , rather than the tape ? Something to make it 100% foolproof and guaranteed square each time. Are there any shelf pins on the market that are that diameter ?
The only foolproof way would be to turn something to match a specific rail. Maybe the head of a machine screw- the hex socket type would work, if you can get the right size. 👍

hey Peter, I just binge-watched a bunch of old videos trying to find a specific one but I can't find it... you had posted about (i think) a makita/festool equivalent track saw (not the evolution ones) and if memory serves I think they were 1400mm long. can you remember which video that was or the name of the track?
Hiya. Pretty sure that was in video 403 Which Rails work - ua-cam.com/video/_HtpT_bK7zw/v-deo.html They were the Excel rails and were the closest copy of the Makita I’ve ever seen and at a great price. You can still get them but they’re priced so close to the Makita I’d just buy the Makita, personally. Watch out for sellers offering the “Excel 1400” rail when it’s actually 2x700mm rails - they’re a different pattern, basically the Einhell / Parkside rail. HTH. P
@@10MinuteWorkshop You legend thanks for the quick reply. Silly me I had scrubbed through that one and missed it, but it was good going through the back catalog again ;). Cheers for the heads-up re the makitas.

Yes, the longer rail can be used, but as you can see in a situation where the bench is up against a wall, there's a long overhang that needs support. And not everyone has the luxury of a longer rail. 👍
I found they work really well on Festool tracks, but not so much on Titan/Triton/Erbauer tracks - thinner metal maybe? I just filed them down a little. 👍
alternatively, make a duplicate of your front rail hinge slider with the launchpad stuck on the front, then just swap one for t'uther as and when needed
I thought the dog locks go between the dogs so they can be tightened and become immovable. I remember Dave remarking that they loosen as you lift the track.
This is correct. They certainly align the track as Peter has them in this video, but one of the biggest benefits of Dave's dog lock design (when placed between the dogs) is that they self-tighten as the arc of the guide rail reaches the horizontal position (Dave talks a lot about this in his own videos). FWIW, the Stanton dog locks are one of the best "bang for buck" upgrades I've ever made to my DIY MFT station. So much better than the UJK rail clips, in my opinion.
