Dwarf Pea Pufferfish Jungle Aquascape

- A lot of you have been requesting a Pea Pufferfish aquascape for years now... My wife has been as well. I finally decided to make that happen! I really like how it turned out and I can't wait to see how it progresses.
That's another off the list! I wasn't sure if I'd ever keep them, but I'm glad I decided to. They're still fairly shy at the moment, but I see their personalities grow every day. Apparently, they're known for getting bored, so I did my best to make an enriching environment.
As always, let me know what you think about the final design. Also, be sure to check out my aquascape playlist to see more aquarium builds.

I'm so excited to finally release this build! We've been planning it pretty much since the bullfrogs moved into the 75 gallon rack. I knew it would happen, but even then I was dragging my feet! I'm glad I finally did though because I'm really enjoying the puffers and this tank. Now I need suggestions for the final 40 gallon tank?
Congratulations to the winners of the 750,000 giveaway. I shout them out in this video, so make sure to watch the whole video. If it was you, please send me an email.
Also, be sure to check out my new channel if you want more content. Just to be clear, nothing is changing on this channel. I'm starting this one to upload more. ua-cam.com/video/b6_eGWmAIbY/v-deo.html
I love the editing in this one
Subscribed your new channel. Wohoooooooo
I'd like to see a tank where you make the Serpa Design logo into a feature that can be used in the tank.
Or an Eastern Salamander setup would be awesome
Could you make a Bioactive hermit crab 🐚 tank?
I would like to see a community tank in the 40 gallon or you could possibly get some day geckos, house geckos, green anoles, etc. I know you don't really specialize in reptiles but i would like to see them pop up on your channel more.
1:10 best 'like and subscribe' I've ever seen.
That playsand moment was hilarious.
Agreed
I’m already subscribed and it made me want to subscribe again lol
@@mind6128 really gave me a chuckle
Literally laughed out loud
As a biologist, I’m so happy to see someone give these amazing fish the space and enviroment They deserve❤️ Such a great rolemodel for fishkeepers❤️🌟
They seem like very curious creatures. Always looking around their tank for the next meal. Really cool to watch.
ennit
What type of biologist are you?

I love how you size tanks in such a humane way. Often people put animals in the minimum size habitats, but you always seem to make sure the space is large and enriching for the animals 🖤
I love the fact that he took the time to scape out of the tank just so the viewer could get a good view of what he’s doing 👍
part of it is because of how ridiculously expensive large setups are
I yelled "YES!" at the screen when your wife said saltwater. Now you got to!
Same!
@@tracenhouchin111 Ive been wanting him to do saltwater forevever. So stoked she wants it too lol
I own a big ol reef tank, and boy its by far the most work of all of my animals including my reptiles. Most expensive too. However, its amazing to have a mini ocean in your house. Its def harder keeping water parameters right with reefs, its a ton of trial and error. But the animals are other-worldly. Polyps are also so fantastic to have. I know serpa could easily handle a reef if he was dedicated to it. If he can handle freshwater parameters this successfully hed be great at saltwater too.
Lol! Love it! 🤗❤️
I can tell you are getting more creative with editing. The talking head on the play sand was awesome and reminded me to like the video. Keep it up!
"Saltwater" "Nooooo" 🤣 me and my husband exactly!
Sygnathid tanks are lit. Especially with red and purple plants and misc macroalgae and gorgonians.
It's not that hard to put a salt on the water, what's wrong? I think i am missing somethibg here
@@hellstarremina7605 if it was that easy everybody would be doing it
@@bluebeans356 why is it hard? I just don't understand
It's easy as Sunday morrrnnnniiiinnnngggggggggg
Uhh biodiversity is key before all else, then lighting and maybe a jet that simulates breathing
“...and rather than ramble them all off...”
Dang, but I kinda wanted to hear you say “Süsswassertang” tho 🤣
Hahahaha!
That one got me good. Didn't expect to read the german name 😂
He sounded so devastated when she said salt water because now he has to do it.
It would be nice though lol
I love that his wife is a nerm, too!
@@THandP_org one of us, one of us!!!
It's great to see a big group of dwarf puffers in a decent sized tank. So many people fall into the trap of keeping them solo "because they're aggressive" or squeezing them into tiny tanks because they're small.
The closest I got into salt is me crying over my tank while I'm cleaning it
Lol
Mood
@@noah_nguyen_ no, theyre brackish fish
@@drewsy5838 They are freshwater "While most Puffer Fish are brackish or saltwater fish Pea Puffers are true freshwater fish. They don't require salt and can't tolerate even brackish conditions." You can also tell because he is using aquarium plants which can't survive in saltwater or brackish.
@@williamliu299 You are absolutely correct! I didn't even know a freshwater variety existed until I looked.
I love puffers, really nice to see someone doing a nice big group of this species as I often see people with only a couple :(
For those who don’t know, peas are actually a shoaling species and should always be kept in groups of 6+ :)
I am planning on getting one. I search in google that they are an aggressive one and don't do well with the same species and on a community tank. HAHAHAHA I am surprised that they can be kept in a group of 6, I start to doubt some information that I found in google. Thank goodness I didn't get one or else its life will be miserable
@@OterryAswel6969the internet is full of misinformation and a lot is just regurgitated by people who echo opinions and it becomes an internet “fact”. The best thing to do is research and try things your self and prove them wrong.
Serpa: Who we getting next?
SerpaWife: Saltwater
Serpa: Nooooooo!
The Audience: YESSSSSS!
I love that you did a pre-setup so that you could change things.
You do amazing landscapes.
Your wife was excited when she sees this tank. You know what they say " A Happy Wife ; A Happy Life"
I've had a Pea Puffer for about 2 months now, SO glad to see you get them, they're such a curious fish and enjoyable animal
Are they salt or fresh or both
@@kimstair1306 Fresh, they don't tolerate brackish or saltwater.
Do your pea puffers wallow and hide in the sand?
Masterfull aquascape, and combined with the almost magic looking pea puffers, just, fantastic
You should make a bladder snail breeding tank to feed the puffers
this type of puffer doesn't actually eat only bladder snails (iirc), i think blood-worms are actually a larger part of the diet, but i could be wrong ;)
@@azura4582 that makes sense. I was thinking more as a treat, enrichment type of food. Thanks for the info!
@@azura4582 They LOVE them though! They don't crunch the shell like bigger puffers do. They just eat the "meat" lol
I used to feed mine black worms. Just need to be careful of parasites, as with all live food. Also, pea puffers are real nasty to each other. I could see them already sizing each other up in this set up. Good thing it’s a big tank, so they can stake their claims.
@@azura4582 it's good to feed a varied diet, but yeah blloodworms can be the staple of their diet if you want, however snails can also be the main staple, the main thing is just to feed both/a variety of different things as really what's known about the nutritional needs of fish isn't much, when compared to other animals like dogs and cats, so variety is always best to ensure they get what they require
LOVED THIS BUILD BUT I LOVE ALL OF THE BUILDS
I got some pea puffers to help control the pond snail invasion in my 75g.
They are the coolest little fish, each with their own personality.
They're not controlling the snails but they are highly entertaining and have earned a permanent spot in my tank.
Love this!! I’ve recently set up a pea puffer tank too after waiting for years and years and absolutely love my 14 little blimps ❤️❤️
Dwarf pufferfish are awesome fish. In fact, they are my favorite and only freshwater fish I keep. Can’t wait to watch the full video! ✌🏼
For a second I didn't see the anubius nana petite listed on screen and was shocked 😂
I never knew about pea puffers and now looking at them, they are so cuuuuute!!!! I'm glad you made a tank for the little guys.
Some fishes I really love are Three-Spined Stickelback ! If you can, try to make an aquarium filled with them ...
Kinda hard to find native fish in supply at stores though
Native fish are really neat. I agree with the guy above me, they are hard to find. Catching then could be a possibility depending on where he lives.
Another native i like is the Gudgeon, quite a few colorful ones out there.
Your scapes are unmatched sir and your complete setup always have that 100% natural look. Love it.
Those puffers are so cute, and the scape looks great. I agree with your wife about the saltwater tank next. 😄
Much respect got a bad back and bad joints would do anything to be part of the aquarium hobby for a living like you🙌
Ohmyjeesus play sand Tanner caught me so off guard 🤣🤣 Here take my like, I’ll catch my breath eventually 🤣
these puffers are in heaven. A lot of space for them
I can’t remember how I stumbled upon this channel but I love it so much! It gives me a lot of inspiration for my own tank
Thank you so much for showing how to keep the plants from floating out of the substrate. It drives me nuts!
I had 2 pea puffers around a year ago and honestly they were the cutest. They would go ham on those blood worms and snails 🤣
They lived only a year?
I really like the Serpa style. The fish always seem so healthy and they are not too bright
Her reaction looks like she's surprised.... congratulations
Thank you for demonstrating exactly how you grasp your stem plants for planting!
I've been looking for a good video to demonstrate, for homeschoolers who are part of an online biology club.
First, congratulations to the winners. I bet they're so excited!
I always love watching these videos, the creativity and care you have for your animals is inspiring. And there's there's the extras like putting your head on the sand bag 😄
I love that there is no commercials just aquascaping thank you tanner
I can’t wait to see the tank in a few months
I have 18 pea puffers for about 2 years now. Super entertaining fish. And surprisingly vicious. The ONLY fish that they get along with in peace are 4 bumblebee gobies. Everything else WILL get attacked.
i absolutely *love* the way your editing style has been evolving recently, it really adds a nother layer of fun to these videos 👍
I was one of them who asked you to do a pea puffer tank on my other account I’m surprised I missed this video lol. I just wanted to say thank you for being an inspiration. Because of you I’ve built up the nerve to build my own channel shortly after making my very first ecosphere. I also want to do platy breeding vids as I’ve been very successful breeding with them. I also got these little dudes a little awhile ago and some awesome cherry barbs. I plan to attempt breeding them as well and make some vids on my experience. So far I’ve just showcase my first ever ecosphere and learned a lot from the experience. Again thank you so much for starting to inspire me well over a year ago to want to make ecospheres and maybe someday terrariums, which turned into me making my very own channel. Thank You!
I love ❤️ dwarf pea puffers!
When Mr. Serpadesign said “No” it reminded me of the Vader “Noooo”
Love the build, just an fyi, when you use a nail gun dont hold the pieces like that, the nail can follow the grain of the wood and go straight into your finger. Much love.
"Who we getting next?"
"Saltwater"
....
"Who we getting next?"
Yeah tanner please do saltwater tank
One of my favorite tanks so far!!
Serpa: "and now we can finally start scaping"
11 year old me and my lvl 3 fresh off tutorial island: "you're god damn right we can"
The fact that you also build this for your wife makes this video even better.
Make a Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis (Western Harvester Ant” vivarium! You can get a colony with a queen from Tar Heel Ants.
I prefer the European camponautus ants like camponautus hurculinus
I haven’t seen pogernomamix
@@joeydr1497 yeah but Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis is the only one we can ship “legally” within then lower 48 states except Florida.
It’s a beautiful tank. I love the little pea puffers and the shrimp are cute to.
HaHa! That end of the video "Noooooo!" was understood by every guy who habitually gets surprise additions to their "Honey-Do List" from their wives or girlfriends. Great design on the tank!
This is absolutely stunning, and these little fish are the cutest fish I've ever seen❤.
At 5:36 I was so confused to see a german word like Süßwassertang
same, immediatly came to the comment section to find a fellow german lmao
Lmao same
Now we also know why he only put them on screen and didn't dare to pronounce it :D
You inspired so many people here in the philippines we loveyou!
I've been waiting soo long for this vid.
I am glad that you did this for your wife. Happy to see that it brought a smile.
I’ve always wanted to have pea puffers
Me too
They are worth it tbh
Hahahaha! Loved seeing your face on the play sand bag. A delightful surprise!
7:05 when you do the 100% water change, do you struggle with some of the plants lifting up and floating?
i think because they're root deep in the sand and gravel mix they're pretty anchored in there
The tank is beautiful and the pea puppets are so cute.
Salt water would actually be kind of cool
Your wife is so pretty! I’m so glad she convinced you to do this one!!
5:36 is this a German Plant Name? Süßwassertang I mean.
Yeah I think so. Everyone just calls it that so I guess it is
@@sonofaquack6987 It's german. "Süßwasser" is german for fresh water, "Tang" is... well, tang 😄
I didn’t know you were an artist!! That painting you showed at the end is unreal!!!
"...salt water."
💯, Mrs. Serpa. Our high school had one that I helped care for and they are a PAIN IN THE BUTT to manage, but the corals and anemones and fish sure were gorgeous.
Absolute beautiful tank..I currently have 6 pea puffers in a planted 20L but will soon be moving them into a 40B and will be adding 6 more...

What a stunning looking tank this is!! I love that you chose for pufferfish, I think they are cool little buggers
I love Puffers too. Saltwater systems can be a challenge - i'm a big fan of corals.
I love your site/work.
Absolutely adore the tiny Tanners that pop up to tell people to like and subscribe 😂
This is absolutely an awesome tank!! Hardly anyone puts more than one puffer together.
I started with 3 DP's, they had babies, now I have 5. I'm hoping to get them a much bigger tank and get more when space and funds allow. I love them.
Beautiful tank!!! I’ve been looking into a peapuffer but I think you have me wanting to upgrade my tank first 😂Thanks for showing!!!!
What a beautiful home you created for such ADORABLE little creatures. ♥
Very impressive. As always. 😉
I like when you say all the plant names out loud. It's amazing to hear.
I didn't know you did art as well. Wow. You really are a creative soul. Well done.
Looks amazing, pea puffers are so cute
Love the tank and love you including your wife in this!!!
This tank layout flows well, very peaceful.
Tanner, Tank looks beautiful... as usual. I think the little pea puffers are cute. Looks like your wife really likes them too!!
thumbs up for the saltwater idea of your wife!!! would be nice to see a reef setup from you. keep it up and stay healthy
Honestly, Tanner in the sand box was hilarious! The tank is gorgeous, one of my favourites for sure
There so cute and so easy to watch all day
I would love a 1 year update on this one! I'd love to see the plants at how you imagined
Hey Tanner I been watching you for like 6 years. You're an inspiration and have been a comfort in our home for years. I hope you are well. ❤️
SALTWATER!!! Great idea lol! ...Love the cute Pea Puffer fish! And again another awesome build!
That's a cool set up Tanner. I really love it. It will only get better with time too.
Showing us exactly how you stop your plants floating away?
You
are a goddamn hero.
I love how much extra care and work you put into your animals. it shows how much you care and the results of the tanks are always beautiful!! And your knowledge of all the different plants and the process is also very interesting! Keep up the great work :)
tweezer tip = gently vibrate the tweezer as you release pressure once stem is in substrate (this is actually harder with heavily rooted plants)
Nice looking tank and those pufferfush are so cute
I think these guys will grow on you, the bigger they get. I love 'em though, and the tank, plus your wife's reaction.
I would love to see a massive gold desert goby waterfall paludarium one day, maybe in the 150🤞. They are one of the coolest, most adaptable fish and readily spawn in full freshwater, a goby rarity as you may know.
LOL! "Saltwater...Nooooo" I finally finished binging MD & wow! Love your content too!
i love it when he makes aquariums
oh my goodness that play sand promo bit just geeked me out dude...very nice
Oh my gosh! I love pea puffers! I was so excited when I read the title
I honestly think this is one of my favourite setups you have done!
I think if i finally get into Aquariums, pufferfish will be sth I gut as soon as possible
Spectacular!!! That tank looks amazing!!!
Wow! I love the outstanding aqua-scape!!!
