The hybrid work model is best I think, so long as it isn't mandated. I'm a principal w/16 years, former Dir. and lead, fully remote 7 years and hybrid 3 more.
It completely depends on your team. Your presence would (likely be) beneficial to the company as a whole even beyond your team, but you're not every dev. I like the social aspects of the office too, but most devs, in my experience, are not. Without someone to pull them away from their screen they may as well be on slack. Honestly, that has ben my overwhelming experience.
It's stereotypical, and so are devs in every org I've been a part of or interacted with. A lead's job is to get the most out of each individual team member. No different than the way you craft a message to be received knowing the contents are worthless if left unheard. If sharing the air doesn't provide value for some they'll just be annoyed by the mindlessness of it.

I disagree, if you did study economy you'd also know that true socialist and communist economies perhaps sound nice in theory but horrible in practice. Consequently, there has never been one communist/socialist country that has made it to present day.
A lot of people seem to believe that the nordic countries with their taxation funding healthcare and education for a large part makes them socialist countries: they aren't. They have more socialist policies but the countries themselves still have free trade in stead of a fully planned economy where the government decides on what to produce.
Can you imagine in an ever changing global world that the government makes a plan on what to produce for all sectors for a year? That'd be a disaster.
Also, this sounds mean but a lot of these communist/socialist revolution larpers, outside from a few in academics, are people who still haven't achieved a lot and in terms of wages, are down at the bottom. They have more to gain but do you expect high skilled labour like doctors to stay in a country where as in neighbouring countries, they can make 5 times the amount?

I think the underlying issue is that in many of these communities, “capitalist” becomes equivalent to “bad guy” while “socialist” or “communist” is equivalent to good guy. They aren’t defending an idea, they’re defending a label and any time they can’t defend their definition of said label they adjust the meaning of the label to be whatever position they think they can defend. The problem is, destiny is starting from a foundation of “this label means specifically x, and if I agree with x I agree with this label” not “this label is used for bad guy, so I don’t like it even if I agree with the underlying idea it represents. I’m going to adjust definitions so that it no longer applies to me”

Ethan is the perfect guy to contrast Hasan, in a way Destiny can't because:
    - Hasan can't accuse him of having an agenda.
    - Ethan always treated Hasan with respect and as a friend, so he can't accuse him of being bad faith.
Ethan is just using common sense, Hasan's and communist's actual kryptonite, and he can't be accused of bad faith or similar things, because he never treated him badly or had beef. Quite the contrary.

I agree so much with Destiny on the whole fake work thing and being stuck in the past thinking we need 45+ hours of labor. I remember before I graduated high school I worked at McDonalds and in between rushes there was literally nothing to do. And I was trained to “fake work” during that time. Just make it look like I’m doing something. I remember thinking wtf this can’t be right, this has to be either just this store or McDonalds as a whole where I was actually trained and encouraged to fake work. Then after I graduated and starting working several different places, they all had that in common. Every single one them, I spent literally 75% of the day fake working. Just pretending to look busy. I fucking hated it. I still hate it. Nothing makes me feel like I’m wasting my life more than fake working. I remember specifically thinking like “There’s no way this is actually what it’s like in the real world” that we get paid to sit on our asses and clean something that’s already clean, or stock something that’s already stock, organize something that’s already organized. Count money that’s already counted. It’s so redundant. That’s exactly why I loved working from home. That exact reason.

    • @FukaiKokoro

It is the same in the software industry. Very few programmers can actually effectively program for more than 4 or 5 hours a day. But you have to stay at the office for 8 or more hours.
So what you end up seeing is a lot of people wasting time getting coffee, buying stuff online, meetings, long chat conversations etc. The worst is when a deadline comes and the programmers force themselves to actually write code for more than 6 hours a day - that is when the bugs and hacks and garbage really gets into the codebase and future productivity will suffer because that makes the codebase harder to maintain.

    • @therainman7777

Yeah but the thing is McDonald’s does actually need coverage during the whole time, in case someone comes in. So what else were they supposed to do? You’re not there for 40 hours because there’s exactly 40 hours of work to do. It’s because they need 40 hours’ worth of _coverage._

It's the young persons lack of wisdom that misguides them into thinking they can get by with a single azimuth. Learn from everyone who's walked before you; take a few steps and shoot it again. I work at a managed services provider and we went permanent remote in 2020 and haven't looked back. Everyone is as or more productive as they were in the office. Major issues / fires are handled just as well or more quickly than when we were in the office. The company is bigger than ever, everyone is making more money than ever, morale is higher, just everything is better. I feel like managers who cling to in-office work either are thirsty for that feeling of control or have no idea how to actually manage a team well. If you know what you're doing you can do it remotely. I say this as someone who has been a technician, manager, and now a trainer/learning development specialist. It can all be done remotely very well.

Being less attractive is not a strong selective pressure. If person A and person B have different looks, but both are attractive enough to reproduce with; then it won’t really matter if both of them are “10s” or A is a “10” and the other is a “7” or even a “5”. In fact, people that would be geared towards only having “10s” (ie, being extremely choosy with partners) would probably also lower their own survival rate if their attraction was that strict, making the trait not survive well as an inherited trait.

People think about humans as a monolith too often in my opinion. Like human nature is greed. That is sort of true an incredibly large number of people want more and more, and yet its not true for all people, there is a portion of the population that is not greedy, that is content with what they have, just look at the Buddhist monks.
I think a healthy and more productive way to think about things, although more complex and difficult, is to understand the sheer diversity of personality type and behavioral profiles. The goal here is to find a way to allow the largest number of humans in society to be productive without causing harm. The psychopath is one of the best examples of this, we could maybe make a society that identifies and removes all psychopaths from it, however, this society will be out-competed by one that puts those psychopaths to some sort of use, perhaps restricting only specific actions rather than all or presenting them a utility function that the psychopath finds enjoyable and still benefits others maybe that's a surgeon who cares little for the horror of cutting someone open or a soldier willing to kill without remorse or trauma, perhaps its even a leader who has to make the hard and cold choices between 2 bad outcomes.
Society is a complex machine of incentive structures and optional life paths/decisions its important to provide a path for each person, or as many people as possible, to be productive and useful or if we fail that at least a path that minimizes the amount of burden they put on the rest. And frankly, the easiest way to do that is to create a society that lets as many people as possible do what they want to do, humans detest boredom to the point we will shock ourselves rather than sit and od nothing we'll find something to keep us busy.
I do think its fair to say that all humans are self-interested/selfish, as in they care about themselves first and foremost, but of course, we are we have to be in order to survive and just because of the nature of perspective, the more you understand something the easier it is to be sympathetic to their point of view and we will always understand our own point of view more than anyone else's so such a tendency makes sense and is not inherently wrong or evil it simply is and needs to be accounted for.
The solution has to be complex and multifaceted because the problems we are dealing with are multi-variable, as in literally as many variables as there are humans on the planet at the minimum. Annoying as that is

58:00 As an indigenous person, no we were not damn commies. This person has a specific world view and wants to force history to match it. Here's about as commie as it gets, collectively the whole tribe does own the territory we're in, this is so one person can't monopolize an entire hunting grounds needed by a clan. That being said, if you built an improvement on the land, like a house or a farm, you now own that and are responsible for it's upkeep. Obviously no one is going to let you let a field go to hell and be a breeding ground for rats that harm the rest of the village, this is how they dealt with the tragedy of the commons, it's everyone's responsibility to keep the land healthy and you can't take more than the land can give, but if you change the land in some way YOU PERSONALLY are responsible for it. That is not commie, that's literally private property on unused communally held land.

I much prefer to let people self organize and decide when to go to the office, when teams or slack is ok, or even when just writing a Google doc and emailing out for feedback.
What annoys me is that we still set offices up primarily for individuals to sit and work at individual desks, who then have to fight for a meeting room to do the collaborative stuff.

For Ethan and most of us, the SocDem world is the destination and for the internet commies its a stepping stone.

Honestly id enjoy an arc of a good faith look into small instances of communes and indigenous societies. Even if the ultimate take is that they "fail" in the broader geopolitical game, I think he kinda brushed that angle off.

Destiny's 120IQ rated Ethan at 80 the last IQ-tier. Meanwhile Ethan at his 160 was just unreachable for the boy with girl's name.

The longer the podcast goes on I think the more it’ll show Ethan lines up politically closer to Destiny than hasan

Just to be clear on the part Destiny was discussing in the beginning with regards to probability and gambling, he was discussing convergence to a limit, not an asymptote.

Yeah I thought I wasn’t bugging because like asymptotes aren’t supposed to ever meet

Legit this was one of the best Destiny videos, the amount of logical interlacing between these two is uncanny

Loll ethan the drunken master. As a big h3 fan. I hope Ethan sees this. Felt bad a lot of his fans were hating on him.

Former viewer here. Lots of the flack he gets is honestly pretty bad faith. I only stopped watching him because his personality and I thought he was trying too hard to make jokes. But he's always been himself.

It’s like a Bo Burnham song minus any level of self awareness.
“Why yes I know I’m calling you out for being privileged and white but let me use my white privilege to tell you why you’re a fucking moron.”

@@BloodGangJohnWayne but ethan did handle the heat. his co-host couldn’t. the issue is that communists will attach amoral prescriptions to your character if you push back on their ideas. this is the case in every leftist community.
you may be in the kitchen but you’re cooking NOTHING

I absolutely am not a fan of Ethan (although I like him more than Hasan) but Ethan is actually very smart. He pretends to be stupid but is truly smart. He is just extremely politicized (like a lot of people these days) and usually can’t overcome that fact

Back when he was doing comedy/commentary skits Ethan always had something pretty smart to say, then he fell into the comedy more and his brand was being a dumbass (shirts video and vape naysh) then he got lazy and went into podcasts where even less effort was needed
He's never been dumb, it's always been a business move to act stupid
