      Yes if you keep up with applying either dip coat or a spray wax, it will feel nice and smooth. The shine is about the same as when first done, although it's more like a satin compared to oem paint level gloss. But it's holding up well. • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  3 роки тому

      Interesting. The original use of it was to rubber coat tool handles. You'd take your old screw driver or pliers and dip the end in it and then dry it and you had a new looking tool. I think it would be able to take the heat no problem, the issue would be the moving parts. It will want to peel at the edges. Like you could do a barrel and stock or grip ( of a pistol), but the slide and even trigger guard would want to peel off. Texture right after painting is a rubberized feeling but you can make it smoother by applying the dip coat sealant or just a spray wax.

    I seem to have the most trouble with emblems when dipping my car. When I begin to peel the plastidip off the chrome emblems/words on the back and front of the vehicle the plastidip likes to stick to the actual panel behind it, and so removing the dip off of the emblem then begins to remove dip off of the actual car body panel itself as they join together. Any tips on how to avoid this?

    • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  10 місяців тому

      Sometimes it's because of how the emblems are designed or fitted and there's not much to do. But that said, when spraying that area, make sure it's hitting directly perpendicular to the panel rather than at an angle. This makes it so the front face of the emblem gets plenty of product for good peeling and the panel gets the right amount as well but the emblem sides get less. This will help it break correctly on the emblem side vs the panel side.

  • @RJYOUNG396
    @RJYOUNG396 5 місяців тому +1

    I would never do an entire vehicle in plasti-dip. The texture of it alone is a no go for me, but beyond that, this stuff is notorious for being easily removable. That's not a good thing when you're talking about covering your car in it. You want something that will endure being hit with rocks and other road debris or occasional scuffs. This is my issue with wraps too. Every wrap shop on Earth will tell you the stuff isn't invincible and will likely have to have a panel replaced here and there over time. Nothing better than actual paint and clear coat, but I know these are cheaper options.

    • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  5 місяців тому +1

      These are good concerns. However let me provide my experience. I have been driving full dipped cars for 10 years. In that time, the dip has never come off unless I wanted it to. With one exception, the door handles on my bmw, those are annoying to spray. The fix for that is to add a layer of vinyl tape on the inside of the pull. Rocks have hit the cars numerous times and rarely even leaves a mark. It never makes it through the dip, never had a tear. Minor scuffs will show but also rarely reveal the paint underneath. On this Acura, someone hit the bumper in a parking lot and it did take off some dip but the paint is mostly fine underneath. Since it was small we drove with it for a long time with no touch ups and it did not peel more. I was also side swiped once, to the point where I had to replace two doors and a fender. In that case, none of the dip came off, despite putting a crease dent down the length of the car. I sourced two used doors and a fender and resprayed the whole car, going over the previous dip on the rest of it. No, issues, looks like a new dip job. I also wash the cars with a pressure sprayer with no issues. Finally, the texture can be very smooth if sprayed correctly. It self levels very well, no orange peel. There IS initially way more friction to the touch, however, so it does feel rubbery. To fix this, use the dip coat after spray or a decent spray wax. It will feel very smooth, that rubber feeling goes away almost completely. Plasti dip is not for everyone, but I can tell you that it is crazy durable and long lasting. The main downside is it is close to impossible to match regular paint in glossiness. Don't try. Even the satin I did for the Acura gets pretty matte when not washed all the time. But if you like the aggressive sporty matte look, it's fantastic.

    • @RJYOUNG396
      @RJYOUNG396 5 місяців тому

      @@OGPedXing Fair points. I agree that the application is key. I had tried it once on wheels and got new tires and the shop's equipment just destroyed the plasti-dip. Then on my next truck I did it really well and got the entire kit and followed the directions and it lasted for over 5 years. I had the tires changed and that time the dip held up no problem. It always had that weird rubber texture and they were harder and harder to clean over time it seemed, but it was quite durable. I would still recommend the product for it's ease of use, but I'd stick to smaller applications like wheels and emblems. I have just bought some Hyperdip to touch up some trim around my MK7 GTI's sunroof, so we'll see how that goes.

    • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  2 роки тому

      If I said coats, I think I meant gallons. I don't remember the coat count but usually I do 5 or so. The amount of product used is what's important for peelability. If you can spray thick coats without runs, then it's OK either way.

    The ambient temperature in Saudi Arabia can arrive up to 55 degrees C can i use Plastic Dip to paint my car

    • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  9 місяців тому

      I have sprayed at temps up to about 38 c. But I wouldn't go higher than that. The reason is the dip will flash dry almost immediately out of the sprayer, leaving you with a bumpy or grainy texture. A couple of tips to help: spray at night or very early morning, you need about 4 hours or so to get the required number of coats down, although dry time between coats (normally 20 minutes) can be shortened to 10 minutes. 2) Thin the dip first with a little solvent like xylene. This will make for a lighter product going on and it will help with smoothness. Downside is that it is more prone to running, so many lighter coats may be needed. 3) store your dip inside with a/c so the product temp is cooler than the air. I do this in reverse to spray in cold weather (I put the dip in a warm place or in warm water before spraying). Hopefully this will help!

    Great job! I'm going to Plastidip the top portion of my Mazda Tribute(painted plastic panels with Truck Bed Liner) soon but don't want to over buy as it seems as though the website encourages that. For example, they suggest 2 Base Coats before using certain colors, but I noticed you didn't use the suggested "Avalanche Grey" from the "Red Car Kit". Did you bypass the Base colors for all your projects? Is it really needed ESPECIALLY if my SUV is already a similar color to Avalanche Grey?

    • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  4 роки тому

      I do a base coat when doing any sort of metallic or pearl premix like the blue quartz or if mixing into a top coat (the top coats are too thin to peel well). For the red, I just did red base all the way with a top coat to finish. On black this covered fairly quickly, within about 3-4 coats. I think I did 5-6 medium coats total, although 4-5 wet coats probably would have been smoother. A grey base coat is good when the color change is big like say black to a light color like yellow or orange. Red is borderline, you can do it either way and probably end up with about the same number of coats. Make sure the total amount of product is enough or it won't come off very well.

That's the key. 4-5 good coats. No problem with any type of soap, car washes are fine, pressure spray is fine. The dip lasts for a long time if protected with Dip Coat or spray wax. The dip on the Miata I did first is now 3 years old. Some wheels I've done are 5 years with some touchups when I get tires. Matte colors cover really well -- scuffs and even light dents. The more gloss you use, the less it hides. But still worked pretty well. My wife's friends all thought she got a new car. Hopefully this helps and thanks for watching! I didn't see this question before. It's more about the specific prep needed for this vehicle (Acura Mdx) not a how to for dipping. If you want that, I recommend the how to from dipyourcar which is excellent and can't really be improved on.
