When I went thru public education for 12 years, not a single teacher I had ever expressed their political or sexual beliefs on me and that’s the way it should be. Students should have no idea what their teacher’s personal beliefs are regarding politics or sexual preference.

And in high school I had a conservative teacher who voted for Trump but we didn’t know until we found his Facebook page but he kept it out of the class

As a conservative teacher, I support parents and agree that parents should have voice and power in their children’s education. I believe that they are the best advocates for their children. But I hesitate on the idea that parents should determine curriculum.

@@juliekennedy9891 I appreciate the genuine manner in which you presented that question. I honestly believe if parents are truly dissatisfied with the public education experience they should make the necessary sacrifices to homeschool. At a last resort for those who absolutely can't, I advocate for school choice for this reason. I believe that it forces the market to improve and the schools who don't wanna lose money due to low enrollment will have to improve and appropriate their funds better to attract the trust of parents. This allows parents to go to where they feel comfortable for their education needs. You should look into the Arizona school choice program as a model if you aren't familiar. We literally have the best school choice program in the country and I truly believe that the monopoly on education for the less fortunate families allows a complacency in the public school system. They need more accountability and nothing accomplishes that like the effects of school choice. It'll expose the good schools and bad schools and reveal why and where our schools need to improve to stay open. The argument that poor kids can't get there is mute because in Arizona they are bussing these kids across city lines. Teachers unions fight against it to maintain power and our children should never be allowed to be viewed as a paycheck to our education system.

I was homeschooled until my highschool years, since my parents and I decided a change of pace would be healthy (and that God wanted me there). The first year-and-a-half were actually pretty great. I knew 100% my school was liberal, yet I never felt like I was being indoctrinated to the degree we see today. Even the actual education stuck with me and has left an impact on my life. Second semester sophomore year, Covid hit and I spent that and my whole Junior year home. That’s when I realized that, when not surrounded by friends and the few teachers I genuinely had good friendships with, the system had insane cracks. My physics teacher didn’t know the work, the Spanish teacher rushed everything and I had to drop it halfway through Junior year just so I wouldn’t fail, and the choir, English, and art teachers exposed their wokeism. Even the assistant US History teacher began talking about how everyone is racist (upon which I rebutted saying I don’t understand how everyone can be racist while not harboring evil intent on any other race, to which my actual teacher said, “It’s more like everyone makes certain light judgements on everyone upon first interaction, to which I say “duh!”).

I am an elementary school teacher and I wholeheartedly agree that parents need to be a part of their child’s education. I honestly think that the lack of parent involvement is the biggest issue there is. The students with horrible parents are the same kids who turn out to be massive behavior issues and distractions in class. The students with two parents at home that are deeply invested in them are the students who will succeed and excel. That being said, if my student was placed in those two teachers classes, I would request a change.

The rest of it was pointless, and I have succeeded in a trade, and none of that was in the curriculum.
In fact teachers only encourage academic success, never anything else. So I did very poorly in public education.

Watching this makes me realize how lucky I am to have the education system I’m in. K-12 with public school but in my Junior year of highschool, I started the IB Program and all of my teachers were very big on not letting their personal biases in but also recognizing all of the different view point. For example, my English teacher when going over grammar and pronouns mentioned that in traditional English, they was not used for a singular person but as time went by, using they to address one person become part of the vernacular. And today it can now be recognized as grammatically accurate but not in formal, traditional English. The same goes with my history teacher when it came to religion. We had an entire day where we talked about the rise of Christianity where we all got to discuss our own beliefs and learn about the other beliefs we have now and that were existing at the time. It was structured so I always had all the options and was never taught one or the other and I will forever appreciate it because I learned how to form my own opinions.

I saw a few students follow in my footsteps but I never brought attention to them because I didn’t want them to get in trouble too, I did however point out the staff who didn’t follow the same rules that they would then yell at the students for not following. All things considered I went to a good school, it was newly built and I genuinely had some really good teachers. I found by talking to a lot of teachers that a lot of them (at my school) just genuinely like to teach. I brought up my thoughts of how the school system works and they would agree with me. It wasn’t until I started poking around the “higher ups,” the administration who self proclaimed their authority over others that I found an issue.

@@Abbey-Melon right. A lot of teachers would side with you but they would go against teacher guide lines and end up fired.
In their shoes they rather keep their jobs and end up losing a student. Knowing that you will have better success in a different school.
I got kicked out o g my school once for not being able to turn in work that the assignment wasn’t even taught so I couldn’t give an answer to the questions being asked.
They actually pre determined they were gonna expel me after the first repeat but that was more so a problem with the teachers.
That was a closed community though so everyone knew everyone.
Work quickly got around that I was saying the teachers were not Teaching us properly.
It was so bad that we had to have dedicated days where it was just a whole period of working on one assignment it was so backed up.
Kids there had no personal life because of how behind they were.
This is suppose to be a highly rated private school to, a bit ironic.
So all teachers knew it but they wouldn’t say anything.
Despite it not really being against teacher guide lines, they cared more about what people thought about them than to actually officially address the situation and work to fix it.
As I see it, them kicking me out was the best idea they ever had. I found way better schools down the line and they actually have a good system going.
So even private schools have their down sides. It really depends on what kind of people are running it.
The people here were more concerned about what others thought about them and the principle looked down to anyone like they were lesser than her even dismissing my parents concerns on how the school is being ran. That isn’t something I see as being worthy of respect.

I have to say that homeschooling depends on the parents. I know very VERY many kids who were homeschooled, and they don't know how to read or even how to function in public. Some of them have turned 18 left home and went completely nuts. I know one family who homeschooled and those kids are smarter than most kids. It's because the mom was not only very focused on educating but she also made them take classes at the high school, do clubs etc. So again, it really depends on the parents.

Always interesting to listen to school debates from other countries. I'm from Finland, and according to statistics we have one of the best educational systems in the world, and it's (almost) all public.
I think kids SHOULD come after school with questions, imo it's the school's responsibility to give the kids the information to form their own opinion and ask questions. That said, the school/teachers shouldn't be ‘forcing’ or encouraging opinions but rather raising awareness of the questions.
An example of how this could be brought up in say 7th grade (~12-year-olds) would be an assignment where the kids make a presentation about a political event or talking point and bring forward the pros and cons of both sides or a debate in class. This way it's also not only allowing the kids to form an opinion and interest themselves, but it's also teaching them debating, public speaking, and literature (researching and writing down talking points/creating the presentation).
If you're only teaching your kids about YOUR beliefs and sheltering them from anyone with different beliefs you're only contributing to a society of segregation where people cannot be friends nor productively debate with people on the other side of the spectrum. Being able to show empathy and understand how other people think. There is always common ground to be found.

From Pre-school into halfway of my 5th grade I was in a private school and I got the attention I needed. They saw I was lacking in reading so they put me into a certain room to better my reading skills and with that, I was able to catch up to my classmates. Then my family moved to another state and for 5th and 6th grade I was put into a public school that was just built and classes were smaller to where I had the same attention then. For 7th grade my family was moved again and I didn't get the attention I needed to be able to be on the same level with the other students for the rest of my school life. It wasn't that I was a bad reader it was more along the lines that I had anxiety when it came to reading out loud or people reading to me which made things difficult to focus on what I was supposed to be focused on and the private school saw that if I was alone in a quiet place my grades were much better. In my public high school I used to hide in the library to read during lunch before some classes so I could focus on what was to be learned that day.

I am a graduated high school student. First year in college now. I never liked the high school i went to for a multitude of reasons. The one that put me over the edge was this situation -
We had an AMAZING history teacher. he taught all 3 different history classes and psychology. He was the ONLY teacher in that school that 1.) stuck up for students. 2.) taught unbiasedly and we were able to freely discuss and debate topics. 3.) fought for students against the board even if it meant risking his job. -
Well ultimately this is what happened, but in the most unethical way possible. Our principle had come to him one day (he openly told his junior and senior classes about this incident) and had told him that the board would not hire him back, so he might as well turn his paper in to say he would not be returning for the next year. Mind you his next year would have been his tenure year, which i find laughably ironic. So he went ahead and went through with it since there were deadlines on such things. well it turns out, he went to the board himself to discuss and they never once said anything about this to the principle. So the basis of the story is that my principle used her power to overpower her staff into leaving the school and THEIR JOB because she did not like the way that he stuck up for students like a real teacher should. he left my junior year. the most heartbroken i’ve ever been. i longed for him every time i walked past his classroom. the education system is messed up and needs to be fixed. i know by the time i have kids it will be even more twisted than it is now and that scared me for the straight minded and delusional people of my generation.

i’ve gone to public school my entire life. and while i love my friends and have overall had pretty decent experiences, i can’t help but be skeptical of public school. going into 9th grade, the counselor would “interview” you with a parent to give you advice about high school. when my counselor asked me what core classes i’d be taking, i said english, math and history (all honors) and biology (for 9th grade you could either take earth science- which is like the easier basic class or biology which was more meant for 10th graders) she told me that i wouldn’t be able to handle it because it was too much work and that i shouldn’t even try. luckily, i did not listen to her. biology was one of my easiest classes, there was homework, but not 2 hours each day like she said there was. students are advised take the easiest route possible, but it sucks because it doesn’t provide a challenge!

I went to public school and actually really liked it. I wasn't a big fan of going to school, but I still liked my school a lot if that makes sense. I see a lot of crazy teachers now and think of homeschooling in a more positive light now with these politics today, but I still think there are many opportunities that come with going to a school that can not be replicated alone learning with a parent, self-learning, or with online learning. Things such as the arts, concert bands, choirs, and orchestras, are all group ensembles. The painting class would have not been the same without the whole class there to give constructive criticism. I knew one homeschooled person who came in for marching band after school, so maybe that worked for all extracurriculars, like the robotics team, deca, or sports teams? Still, you would have to know it was going on to be involved, which is hard when you're not there to hear about it. I guess if you think of school as just traditional learning like reading and math homeschooling is fine, great if the student is very self-driven, but there are so many cool opportunities that can be taken advantage of if you go to a school. I am biased thought because I lived in a good district, and I know a lot of great districts all over.

Honestly I’m so glad my parents put me through private schools because during grade 9 where I asked to go to a public school (not American, but Canadian) was the time I learned no one gets any tools to use other than a basic textbook, some classes don’t even have a projectors and use those odd light magnifies with clear sheets of paper to present material, smart boards don’t exist in public schools, the lectures are boring and basic where I didn’t actually learn anything new within stem classes, and for the 3 times I actually tried cafeteria food during the year I would of preferred to eat cardboard. That’s not to mention how poorly some (not all) teachers handle the classroom and more importantly how poorly some other students behave during class time. I quickly asked to be transferred back to the private school proposed to me originally for grade 10 onwards just because it was a much better overall experience. I understand that this is not an option for all and I am fortunate in this regard but the bottom line is, if you as a parent can afford to send your children to private schools it is a great investment in their future because by the time I got to university it created a bigger advantage and allowed me to grasp more advanced concepts easier building on a stronger foundation in core concepts, attitudes, application, time management…. then (from my experience) a public school was able to offer during my one year there, resulting in me paying just about a quarter of the regular yearly tuition due to all the grants tied to school performance.
In my opinion, public schools suffer from the problem of being to large to handle, because one board handles dozens of schools, while private schools typically just have one building to handle and rather that expecting a pay check for just satisfactory work, professors are instead inspired to go above and beyond to demonstrate their abilities or risk loosing the school money from withdrawals resulting in loosing their jobs. Parents have a infinitely greater level of control of how private schools handle children than public schools because the number of concerned parents required to take action is dramatically smaller also resulting in quicker actions because it is in the interest of the business to keep their customers happy, I’ve had instances where some parents did not like certain aspects of school conduct and after being put to a vote it was revised within a week instead of what I’m assuming would be a several months long process in public schools. Finally just to mention, every single individual I know from my high school has entered university or collage, where a couple of my friends outside of school received rejection letters or chose not to pursue further education, and that not to say not choosing university or collage is a bad choice because not every life path needs it but the fact of the matter is those attending private schools are coming out with more skills and knowledge than peers in public schools
Anyway if you read this whole chunk of text, thanks for your time, here I’m mainly speaking from my own experience and may not be entirely representative of other experiences, I just wanted to take a moment to share my opinion on the matter and welcome any other points or experiences going against what I mentioned above. To probably the one person that actually reads this I hope you have an awesome day :)

I’m 16. I attend a public school, but it is more like a private school in the way that it is run. Additionally, I live in a relatively small town and there are only around 300 students in my grade. Since I have been in this situation essentially all my life (I have moved schools several times due to my parents work, but they have all been very similar), I have never considered that public school is bad, because I have excelled in this environment. I have been top of my class and all of my teachers provide me with extra resources if I wish to learn more. But that changed when I watched your videos. I now realize that not all schools are the same, and, unless I find another school similar to mine, I will now consider homeschooling, when I was against it in the past. I was a public elementary school teacher for 24.5 years in a liberal state (I never saw any teacher teaching gender ideology, by the way) and am now retired. I could, and perhaps should write my experiences and insights into a book (I started but still need to finish.) I went to 13 different public, private, "alternative," and homeschooled schools. (I know; I traveled a lot growing up.) I was never a public school advocate; however, some of my perspectives changed while teaching because many students had very dysfunctional unhappy homes, and this institution, public school, was their only haven and continuity in their lives, and this brought me great responsibility as a teacher. I helped many students learn and have a place to go five days a week where they could hopefully thrive.
Moreover, because public school is a routine where many children can feel safe and fed does not justify public schools' implementation of curricula and nearly insurmountable testing. It's a very complex problem. For many students, the public school creates much anxiety for children not at the level the school deems they should be. They often need to catch up in many areas due to their problems at home, which significantly impacts their learning. And unfortunately, a deep flaw of public schools is the inability to meet the child's needs. I had up to 36 students in my classroom (usually around 27 consistently), and it is impossible to meet all their needs, even with extra help, which is what homeschooling can give a child.
My husband has taught homeschoolers outdoor education for 27 years, and these kids have a better education in most aspects and positive home lives than most of my experience with children in the school I taught. Again, there are many factors as to why. While as a child, I did not have consistency in the same school, my exposure to and experience with many types of schools and their inherent educational philosophies made me know there is no one way to learn or teach. And, for this, I feel grateful. It did not hinder me from getting into college and earning two degrees. If children come from a home where language, books, and exposure to the world are available, they can thrive. Socio-economics plays an essential role in this. Again, it's a complex issue.

I have been in both a public school and homeschool. In public school I was struggling because there wasn’t enough time to address specific students issues. But in homeschool I could improve because I could have 1 on 1 time and I drastically improved. Same situation for my brother.

I went to private school in Germany. The first time I heard my teachers opinions on social/ political issues was when we were around 17/18 years old in our final years when we were supposed to engage in diverse and critical discussions.
Also schools here are funded by taxes, but if you pay tuition for a private school you can write large parts of it off.

Because social norms are a tool for signaling to others, and others got the message, that a man in makeup teaching little kids, is a self indulgent , narcissistic, childless, Zealot.

In a proper competitive teaching market, his pay should have decreased with the lost students. They there would be a balance between his choices/actions and his compensation.
