I think Violet learned from last season that getting TOO involved in your child's love life could make a disaster and that's why she's gently steering Colin into the right direction rather then fully pushing like she did with Anthony.
She also told Kate that she pushed so hard with Eloise that it ended with her almost leaving society altogether, which is why she's not pressuring Francesca.
In previous seasons, the love between Daphen and Simon, and Kate and Anthony, was sudden, impetuous, passionate, as if a spark started an uncontrolled fire. This season, Penelope and Colin's love is like a flame in a fireplace. It starts burning gently and then grows to such a size that it warms the whole house. I believe their love is more subtle because they have known each other for so long. They manifest their love in jokes, smiles, gentle touches, compliments and feeling comfortable in each other's company. Colin only shows his true self around Penelope, and Penelope doesn't panic while talking, shows her true wit, her character and feels relaxed in Colin's company, they know they're safe with each other, that one won't ridicule the other.
Yes but I still think friends to lovers can have passion and tension and lust etc while you’re discovering your feelings, otherwise why would anything change? I just wish that after their kiss, we could’ve gotten a lot more attraction between them, it just seemed like Collin was deciding for the entire first half, rather than loving and perusing Pen
He didn't have to pursue her, the minute he knew he went for it. Both the duke and Anthony fought their feelings. Colin is direct, and defied his friends, to me he is the most brave for love @@PinkPopcast
@@PinkPopcast Personally I loved the lusting and tension we got, but I liked it because it was more subtle, so that's my personal preference haha I understand completely you wanting to see more attraction between them, because SAME LOL! I know we'll be seeing a LOT more of that is part 2 so I hope you'll like it! I think the writers had a challange with showing Colin's internal conflict because in the book SO MUCH of his feelings are being contemplated in his head. I know it's no excuse (saying "it was like that in the book") but it might throw new light on some scenes.

This isn’t specifically about this episode, just something cute I noticed about Penelope and Colin during my rewatch of earlier seasons. I loved in episode 2 when Penelope laughs when Colin says they’ll “gallop along” after finding out that Lord Basilio’s horse died, but it was even more special when I rewatched the episode in season 2 when Colin visits Marina. Philip asks Colin if he saw the olive orchards while in Greece and Colin says that yes he “oiled his way in” and Marina just stares at him so he awkwardly clarifies that it was an olive joke. I just love that it shows that Penelope really gets his humour and really loves the dorky side of him. It just made me happy.
Penelope also makes a plant bun in that episode, ‘is she wilting?’, which no one else reacted to, unfortunately Colin wasn’t present but we know if he had been he’d have laughed. They are meant to be 😊

I've wondered for some time now if she always had her survival instinct or if it was something that she had to learn once she realised her marriage was a dud.
I love the carriage scene because the power dynamics in the relationship were always in Colin’s hands whether he knew it or not, but that scene he’s putty in her hands and also for a scene that isn’t over the top explicit, i feel like it was the sexiest scene so far because was super intimate. Also love the detail that Luke added with Colin not using his soiled fingers to put her sleeve back up. And also it’s funny rewatching that scene because Nicola said recently as a joke during a screening in Ireland that it was important for her to show a body like hers on screen because it’s so rare and then she said, like women with perfect breasts lol! And I can’t argue with that. She’s got the ladies!

To me, Pen and Colin are the soft couple, the awkward ones that are cute and gentle. It's not the type of extreme tension or hate/love. It's the friends to lovers gentleness. They have hot chemistry too, ofc, given the carriage and first kiss, but what i mean is that my expectation to them is to have a tender smile on my lips when they are together and that's why i think this season is so far my favorite. I feel more romantic.

Plus, Colin learning to love the real Penelope, not his idealization of the friend he always admired and loved...lady whistledown will do that, i think.
"She pretty much knows..." Violet is on the ball and doing her busybodying on the downlow this season. I see you girl! She says previously she is stepping back, but still leans in to check on her children and offer the push they need. She's so sweet and clever after learning from her mistakes with Eloise. Yay for growth! I'm hoping her flirting with Danbury's brother goes well for her because she deserves some fun too.
I think this feels like an incomplete love story because it is. Pen spent half her life viewing Colin on a pedestal until he fell from grace with his cruel comments, and now Colin is idealizing Penelope. Colin can't love her only knowing half of who she is. I'm really hoping part 2 will give us that deeper connection that comes with the total acceptance of your partner.
Something I noticed on my rewatches of season 1 and 2 with specific focus on Polin was that there was a lot of parallels in season 3. I think my favourite one is the contrast between how Colin reacts to Cressida bullying Pen in S1E1 versus how Lord Debling responds to Cressida bullying Pen in S3E1. In S1, we meet Colin and Penelope when they are talking about the new pink dress she is wearing. Cressida comes onto the scene. She spills her drink onto Penelope’s dress and tries to pass it off as an accident, but Colin immediately clocks on and calls bull. He rejects Cressida’s offer to escort her to the dance floor and instead escorts Penelope, who at first was sad because her new dress she got to pick herself was ruined, but immediately gets happy seeing Colin stand up for her and bonus points, dance with her. In S3, we have Lord Debling and Penelope talking to each other and then Cressida enters the scene. She pretends to have accidentally stepped on her new green dress, and Lord Debling believes her. He doesn’t notice that she is upset because her new dress which is picked for herself is ruined. Because he doesn’t notice she’s upset, Penelope has to act like she isn’t. Lord Debling leaves her side to fetch a lady’s maid and that’s when she bolts out, passing Colin, who immediately noticed she is upset. Idk if it’s intentional but I assume it is because it’s a very obvious parallel, but I just thought that was so cool🤷🏾♀️
I made sure to watch seasons 1&2 before this first half and you can definitely tell Colin has always felt something for her but he cant grasp the thought of her being more than just a really good friend,i think her not being attached to Eloise's hip (as sad as it is) this season has helped him seprate pen from just a family friend to a potential partner. Now he did take forever to open his damn eyes. I'll give yall that 😂

exactly- from the beginning (season 1) it's clear they both like each other in that way- there are so many times throughout the previous 2 seasons that it's obvious that Colin likes her back- he was always looking at her, seeking her out at balls, he stoped singing when she entered a room in season 1, seeks her out at balls and gatherings, are always alone together and having conversations with each other that are both very in depth and showing similar interests and attention but also some of the conversations they have and how he acts around her you wouldn't have with lady (it would be inappropriate) but it just shows how much he respects and appreciates Penn but also truly loves her- always wanting to talk about anything with her and wanting her opinion and wanting Penn to be happy . He also apologizes and takes steps to repair the/r relationship when he messed up without him believing he will get out of it, he just wants her to be happy.
colin is the typa guy to bring up men’s mental health awareness month to be wholeheartedly genuine in asking other men to open up to each other more and care more about things that actually matter. i love him.
Colin is a sensitive and emotional character so when he feels things he really feels them but tries to hide them out of the best interest of others. I believe that hearing that Penelope could be engaged made him wake up and realise that him trying to show her he loves her was better than leaving her be because he did not feel good enough. A lot of this season was Colin trying to prove himself to be like everyone else, but when it comes to Penelope he cannot act that way. I really love this season so far because I know part 2 will be messy when he is considering his thought and feelings for her although she is Whistledown.
For someone who only saw this season bc of Nicola, and watched a quick compilation of the general story and Polin moments in previous seasons to prepare for it (also Queen Charlotte bc I work with mental health and it intrigued me, considering it’s a bit more historical, even it not super accurate), it is obvious the feelings were always there. Except, unlike a Lady out in society, Colin was not looking (except when he had that infatuation with Marina, and in fact, after her, clearly he was eager to take a break). Penelope was already a perfect partner, but she was also his little sister’s friend. That shift can take a while to manifest, especially with men lol But even the “i would never court her” was a bit defensive. After that, he does a 180, tries to be like his brothers. You see in ep 2 he was already jealous of her before they kissed, when she was talking with that boy. He is constantly downing his drinks when he thinks of her, when she shows up in the green dress, when he gets jealous, when she tells him about his kind eyes, when he wakes up from his dream and Hyacinth tells him she is his friend, etc. actually, he is constantly annoyed every time someone calls her his friend from the moment they kissed. Every time someone says he is helping her find a husband. At the end of the ep 3, he looks borderline suicidal when she chooses to dance with Debling instead of hearing him. The candle wasn’t just him remembering he cut his hand, it was a representation of his will and that time is passing. The flame goes out, he’s running out of time. Then, in the carriage, the minute SHE calls them friends, he is defeated. He spent all this time afraid she might not feel the same, he doesn’t know what we know. He has suspicions, but Violet tells him he has to ask. You can see also, after they laugh together, his decision is made. He looks at her, takes a breath, fixes her dress. He already knew he loved her, now he knows he desires her. And he wants a love, he is tired of pretending he doesn’t. The very passage of his journal she reads is him telling he doesn’t understand how can he be so intimate with someone and feeling so far away at the same time, not connecting. With Penelope, it’s there right away. Also, LW didn’t destroy his family. In fact, she protects them, though through dubious means. Colin would be stuck raising another man’s twins if not for her, with a woman who would maybe never truly love him. And when Eloise was eventually caught with Theo, not only he’d be most likely killed (Anthony called Simon for a duel, but he is a Duke, Theo is a low class man, Eloise was recklessly endangering them both), not only her, but her other unmarried sisters would be ruined. Remember, when a young lady is caught in scandal with a man, society believes her family is at fault and her sisters are ruined by association. And, both times, Penelope tried to warn them before she had to choose publishing it. Eloise was in trouble with the queen too. Also, LW was, at the time, Penelope’s only hope for the future. She was on her way to becoming a spinster, her father is dead, her family is debt, the new Lord would marry her wicked sister and she’d be at their mercy. Her LW money was her only source of income. Anyways, for the intricacies of the time, Penelope has it way worse than Eloise, and Eloise is clueless to how her actions can affect others. She risked herself, Theo, her sisters. She made a joke when Cressida told her about having to marry an old man. She mocked a girl for liking embroidery. Not on purpose, but she thinks just bc she disagrees with society, she can act as she pleases. And she can because she has a loving family, brothers and a sister that could support her if she remains unmarried. Penelope’s only hope was LW, because no one was interested in her and she also was holding out for love. Now, she obviously is in a tough spot, but for how it was for women back then, I truly can’t fault her for what she does. She exposed a society that mocked her, she doesn’t lie there, and the times she abused her pen, was to protect people she loved, because she understands how ugly society is better than them.

He is an experienced grown adult man but the moment he kiss Penelope, from his POV, thinks that everything that he has experienced before is absolute rubbish. Lord Deblin wasn't even going to leave for just a year, it takes him a year to get where he wants, then he would stay for a while and then another entire year to come back. I believe they said he would be gone for three years, and that's just one of his travels.

I actually really like Colin's side because it's a natural personal growth and self-realization he goes through, while actually being more emotionally mature than Simon and Anthony combined 😭 One nearly ruined his life because of pride and the other because of a misplaced feeling of duty (and pride), but with Colin he realizes that the feeling he has are, in fact, romantic and not just a "special friendship" and immediately goes down bad like a wounded deer 😂 He was glancing at her jealously even before Dabling showed up, but after the kiss he's losing touch with reality, lying on the bed like a Renaissance painting, wondering why does it feel this way (because he thought he was in love with Marina when it clearly felt different). And it took him what, 2 weeks before getting on one knee? I think if Dabling wasn't in the picture it would be a week, maybe 2 more for him to reach the same boiling point, since he was already on the trajectory Can't wait for part 2 to see them together, the only thing that pissed me off in S2 was that they only got together at the VERY END so we didn't see them in the bliss, but it works for different seasons to have different structures (I've heard the books are quite formulaic, at least the first few)
I had very mix feelings about this season, but I admit that I adore it more and more on rewatches. Until part 2 is released, I can't really judge. What I want to emphasize is that I loved Colin's spiralling in this episode. He arrived this season with pirate coat on, with cheeky cringy compliments, all smiles, drinking with buddies and having threesomes. Because he got his heart broken in season 1 and people made fun of him in season 2. And apart from Pen and El, everybody loved his new me. And when he finds out he hurt her, surely he can win her back by helping her, no big deal. She is dear to him, he does not really have other plans, he wants her to be happy. And while does not really know why he is not a fan of a guy she flirts with, who cares? And then, with one kiss, it all goes to hell. The first night. Weird dream, but it was quite weird all along, he did not expect to like it as much as he did... But then again, moving on. The second night, the same thing happens. The lightbulp. Fuck. And after seven days of not seeing her, they finally meet. And she wants them to keep their distance, embarassed by the whole ordeal, while he sees her each and every night. It clicks for him, but he is afraid of losing their friendship, but screw it... and once he musters the courage, a titled older well-travelled guy begins to court her. The perfect match on paper. What did she wanted, anyway? Freedom. That guy gives it to her. Who is he? A third son with no title without clear purpose whom she knows basically all her life. "Fuck, I don't like this. I want to be casual and charming. I just need some reverly. I will get over this phase." So he tries to have casual sex. Does not work. Can't even look at them, so just stares blankly into nothingness. No matter. Time for some guy-bonding time. He always had bad hangovers, but screw it, we shall drink until it all dissapears. Can't say anything to them. Damn, they are so hollow. "What am I even doing here?" And no matter what he does, he has the same dream over and over again, driving him insane. And is even happy about it as they do not even talk now, so this is the only way of really having her in any way. And then, his hangover ass finds out that this random dude proposes barely after 1 week of courtship 😅. A guy who plans to leave her for 3 years. She can't marry such a dude. She probably does not know! So he interrupts their dance, funnily does not even acknowledge his presence. And she wants to say yes! He does not even make puns like we do, does not gallop along! The hell? I coached her and almost went insane so someone like her will spend her days tending a house of a guy who barely shows up?! 😂😂😂

Hearing about what you guys expected from Colin, wanting him to express his feelings for Penelope without a guy in the picture...I get it. But also, he kinda does. Colin is the one that closes his hand in the lamp scene to touch her and nobody was interested in her back then. The reason why he didn't reveal it sooner was because he didn't think she wanted him. He almost got the courage on episode three when he says "I" and then mouths "love you". And in the carriage, without music, you can hear him say "beautiful"...I guess, Colin is very subtle. And it gets unnoticed.
The previous couples didn't know each other at first, so their romance was established in a different way than this season. Also, it wouldn't be very interesting to tell the same story again with little variation. You can tell Colin already felt something for Penelope before, from the way he looked at her, searched for her at every event, was comfortable enough to be himself with her. Probably what needed to happen was that things had to change for him to realize that she was more than his younger sister's best friend. Since S1, we see Colin as someone who wanted to make other people happy, and also who felt insecure within himself. He wanted to be seen as a man, while people often saw him as a boy, people like Anthony, Marina and even Violet. We even see him wearing similar clothes as Gregory, to visually show us that. All this time, Colin has been trying to find himself. Penelope not answering his letters when he was traveling contributed to his decision to change, to act the way society expected from a man. We see from the start that it's wrong, but it takes him a while to figure it out. Also, in their own seasons, Simon and Anthony only figured things out in episode 7 or 8. Colin did it in episode 4.
I can agree with everything in this comment (technically) but it still doesn’t change that neither of us are as ENGAGED with their love as viewers (so far). There’s subtext, and then there’s just plain engaging entertainment… and watching him flashback to a candle was less engaging and more “huh… sure okay I guess”
The thing about the flashback, though, is that it was a moment when Penelope saw a glimpse of the real him, something he didn't show to anyone. In his journal he could talk about his feelings and experiences, without fear of being judged or rejected. Penelope read it, and he got flustered and afraid, to the point where he hurt himself. And still, she tended to his wound, told him that he had a talent, accepted that side of him. That's something he felt he couldn't find with anyone.
@@PinkPopcast Yeah i would have preferred a flashback to a moment in the prior season that he is seeing differently or from a different angle or some of his jealousy this season. Or hell a moment from the summer where he was waiting to hear back from Pen?

I’ve heard some people say the same things that Rizzo said, like Colin not chasing Pen enough, but to me it’s clear they wanted to get their feelings for each other to each other established on part one, because it’s obvious the real drama of the story is Colin finding out Pen is Lady Whistledown, it’s also a callback to the last minutes of ep 1… I’m so interested in that plot especially after watching the trailer, their dynamics are going to be intense! I fear I might cry…
I felt the same way y’all do when it came to him realizing his feelings, but I appreciate how AS SOON as he recognized what he felt, he went for it and secured what he wanted (which was penelope) I think because he’s had her in his mind as a close friend that when he felt something stronger than friendship it was more of confusion and over analyzing his relationship with penelope *which is why we see him pondering and brooding so much* And for STEAM.. just wait for the second half🤭 furniture gets broken.
I loved this episode but one thing that did bother me is that Penelope has gaslighted herself into believing she asked for Colin's help. Colin is the one that came up with this not so brilliant plan...she never asked for his help. It was all him!
I got so defensive of Colin when people said he needs to grovel/suffer more, that there needs to be more longing and yearning. No, he does not, his love for her has been growing throughout the years, he just did not have the final chain to connect everything together - until their first kiss. I was about to write a long-ass essay under this comment session to examine this, but luckily folks who deeply understand Polin have done the Lord's work. Thank you for holding on to your full critique guys - enjoyed your inputs as usual (and Give Me Everything cover at the end of the vid was *chef kiss*). I'm sure this season won't disappoint :)
I so enjoy your reaction videos. As for Colin. I mean, technically, we have seen him loving her. It just took that kiss for him to realize. I think he would have come to that realization eventually without the kiss, but it would have been when she got married, not beforehand. She was always the person he searched for at any social event. She was the person he wrote to. He even asked why she didn't write back because he looked forward to her letters. He said few people wrote him back. I'm going to bet he didn't confront anyone else in the lack of letters. While I agree that I would have liked to see more pining for her with him, because let's face it, she certainly deserves it for holding a candle for him so long, at least he said something finally! Thank you two for the entertaining videos!
Colin did start liking her before someone else showed interest in her though. Debling was briefly in episode 1 and spoke to Penelope, but Colin didn’t see that. The first time he saw Pen with Debling was during episode 3. By then they had already had multiple moments that made it clear he was feeling something beyond friendship for her. There were moments in Season 1 and Season 2 where he’d stare at her and/or be surprised or impressed by something she’d say, so I think there’s always been *something* there but because they’ve known each other for so long, he never entertained the thought of it ever being more than friendship. I would have liked more insight into Colin coming to this realization (though we might get that in Part Two), but I don’t think him having those feelings is sudden because I think they’ve always been there in some form, nor do I think he only realized he liked her because someone else did. The show runner talked about how it was important for them to show Colin falling for her before he was aware of someone else liking her and I think they did that.
okay so costume designers said that they intentionally made cressida's outfits larger (iykwim) and more bird-like to show a bird locked in a cage. The dresses shrink her, are larger than life, and aesthetic, sophisticated but probably very uncomfortable
also (not you two) people keep saying what violet said about colin putting himself after everyone isn’t true because he traveled for 2 summers(???) but colin is the same one who would have married marina regardless of her situation, who took daphne’s words seriously even though he was older and his brothers told him not to share the information. colin changed everything about himself to make other people happy and only when he realizes his feelings for pen do those expectations begin to fall away, he doesn’t care what the ton thinks of her, he never has because he loves her (platonically and romantically). he was constantly putting other peoples needs before his own and this will be something that carries into part 2 if the trailer is to be believed. even in his relationship with pen (trailer spoilers i guess?) he says that if he can’t protect her he doesn’t understand what else he is good for. he doesn’t believe that him as he is would be enough for her. for anyone.
Portia is downright insufferable in this episode. Even when she thinks she's helping Penelope she's really not. The look on Portia's face after Penelope calls her out 27:05 says it all. she doesn't even realize the emotional damage she's done to her daughter by constantly criticizing and neglecting her until that moment and then she doesn't even have a chance to really deal with it. this is something I'm very much looking forward to in part two will Portia even attempt to repair her relationship with Penelope before she marries Colin and moves out.😊
Some commenters have mentioned that she probably sees a lot of herself in Penelope which would explain why she doesn’t encourage her to pursue “true love” as that never existed for her like it did for Violet. That doesn’t justify her actions in TODAY’s age, but it would be a sad reality for women in the 19th century ☹️
Not to mention, Portia is the one who barged in on Pen and Lord Debling and offered the info about Pen always sitting at that window, staring out...which, when combined with Cressida's info on the Bridgerton House's location, was what caused Debling to withdraw his proposal. I know people defend Portia and I get why, but she was insufferable in this episode - just as you said!

It's totally okay if you're not quite on the "Polin" train yet or ever. 😂 I don't think it's a matter of one kiss changing Colin's feelings. I think it's a matter of one kiss making him realize that his closeness and feelings he's had for Pen for all of these years were deeper than just friendship. And it's his "stereotypical" attractions to others and his worldview that made him never consider someone as different as Penelope. Things that one kiss has shifted for him as well. It's 100% friends to lovers. One or both of the friends has to wake up eventually to see that they want more than just a friendship. Because their friendship runs much deeper. It’s the slowest burn of the show! You can tell since season one he stares at her for longer than is appropriate. He takes the role of husband with her without knowing that’s what he is doing. He has loved her all along and just didn’t know until they finally kissed. It’s the definition of she fell first but he fell harder. I loved the pacing of this season

The feminine of Marquis is Marchioness. Side note, a Duke is about as high as you can get without being British Royalty. Indeed, some of the Royal Princes are/were also Dukez of specific areas. At any given moment there would be very few Dukes/Dukedoms in the country ( my memory is saying six), and the chance that any given duke would be of marriageable age and not yet wed would be small. You guys probably won’t read this comment but what I appreciated upon second rewatch through your reaction videos was just how affirming Colin was towards Penelope during the suitor lessons. The suitor lessons weren’t about getting her to be a different person or to put on the charm, but to make the “charming” side of her as he puts it come out of her shell. It shows that he has always appreciated this side of her. “You do not need any lessons”, “You are Penelope Featherington, do not forget that”, “you were oh so very charming”. This is why the market scene with them is one of my favourite scenes, and episode 2 is my favourite (barring the very unnecessary brothel scene), its just a lot of affirmation from Colin that Penelope never really gets to hear from other people, and Penelope in turn affirming Colin. And we’ve heard him give these types of compliments in previous seasons too, so it didn’t seem like it came from nowhere. In contrast, Lord Debling’s affirmations to Penelope were superficial, “you look especially beautiful tonight, Miss Featherington”, though he lowkey ate his first compliment “why do I have a feeling that you can make one wither with a look” or something like that, and he definitely ate the “I appreciate your frankness” or something like that in episode 3. I did like him though, he was the first person outside of Colin that she could be frank with, but alas it wasn’t meant to be. I did see though from the posts from Netflix instagram accounts that we get a lot more of Colin affirming Penelope, which she wouldn’t have gotten from Lord Debling because he would’ve been away for 3 years so I’m happy for her in that aspect. And I think we’ll get more growth from them in the second part so I’m excited to see them grow within the relationship, contrasting Kate and Anthony who had to grow before they entered a relationship with the other (before anyone fights me, I love them both, lol) PS, why were Colin and Penelope lowkey flirting with each other in the market scene? Looking back, she knew how to flirt, just not with men that weren’t Colin, that’s probably why Colin was confused when she was failing hard in front of those other men😂😂😂. Also his little adoring smile that he gives as Penelope attempts to flirt with other men got me a little. Ngl, I was giggling and kicking my feet when I saw him smile like that. If they had just left out the brothel scenes and replaced it with more scenes between them, I would’ve enjoyed them more, but those scenes lowkey undercut the Polin interactions. Audiences don’t want to see the love interest rolling in the hay with anybody who isn’t the main character. We already got that he was putting on a rakish persona when he was flirting with other woman, the brothel scenes just felt gratuitous. Also, in the scene with the candlelight where he’s realising that he’s about to lose Penelope, they should’ve added an additional flashback to season 2 to show him realising that he’s always had feelings for Penelope. But other than that, I’m quite frankly fine with this season, the comedy has been turned up to a ten, the Polin interactions we did get were cute and they are in general a cute pair. Hopefully we get to see more of them in part 2 than we did part 1, I’m pretty sure from all the non-spoiler reviews I’ve seen, we are.
My thoughts on the reason for the candle flashback scene was Colin remembering Pen reading his innermost thoughts, and she was not judgmental of them in any way, and complimented his writing. He views himself as not enough bc he doesn't enjoy the things that society expects a man to like, and tried to change himself bc of it. I think it made him realize Pen might like him for him and not his façade, and that's what gave him the final push to go after her.
Love your analysis, in the book it was the first time he felt a spark when Pen wrapped his cut hand. In the show the showed that moment by him closing his fingers with hers. If you watch it with the audio description it says Colin closes his fingers with hers. When they felt that spark they both got flustered. This happened before the kiss in both the book and the show. The flame going out reminded him of the spark and motivated him to go get his wife before that strange man married her.
Yeah being gone for three years at the beginning of a marriage even for practical reasons is alot and then for him to say he can't even think that there is a potential for love due to his work is Crazy

34:35 there were scenes of him wanting her before someone. in this season and in previous scenes. he just didn’t REALIZE it. that’s the whole point. it’s not as noticeable too because it wasn’t their seasons. it’s very clear when colin was describing how much pen meant to him in the other seasons, it’s not really a platonic description but he’s young and dumb and didn’t realize that. this season isn’t just about love. it’s about them finding themselves and their purpose. colin is realizing his purpose IS penelope.
Y’all are voicing my exact thoughts! I would’ve loved to see his affection grow more and to see him pine. To me it felt a little bit rushed! I’m looking forward to seeing if the second half expands on it more.
Book spoilers: One thing I wish they included in this season is pens friendship with lady danbury. In the book she encourages her to stand up for herself and get out of her shell. It would’ve been sooo cute and fun to see that play out in the show, but alas, she only has time for the bridgerton girls…
It was said by the actors themselves that the kiss does not spark the love from Colin’s side but instead confirming it. Maybe it’s because Im always a fan of Polin and their book is my fav so I alwaysss focus on their little interactions in s1 and s2 so watching s3, unlike others, I did not find it too sudden? In fact it felt so natural to me. Their little interactions in previous seasons are enough to set the foundation of how both of them admire and respect one another and how their words carry weight and affect each other very much. The feeling, the connection, has always been there even for Colin but it was never named.

Part 3: stuff I liked Francesca and John being adorable. Violet catching on to who her children like. Lady Danbury believes her brother to still be a rake, but I like his interactions with Violet being the opposite. He sees her as a potential love match. He seeks out this connection with her and loves what they have in common. I also feel they are intellectual equals as well. And I love how he asks his sister about not any woman, but Violet even though he did not use her name with Lady Danbury yet. “She did not drink the lemonade” is one of my favorite lines in all of Bridgerton. The psyche and eros parallels. I love hearing people talk about that and provide more insight on that. The writers thought about a lot. The queen’s swan wig. This season is my favorite so far. So obsessed with everything.

He doesn’t know if she feels the same, he might ruin her chances and definitely their relationship. Then the candle goes out, reminding him of when he knocked it over, and she tended to his wound. Maybe she cares for him… maybe she reciprocates his feelings. (The scene also remind me of when they talked about the incident when they first met. He thinks she was charming about it! He probably thinks so too in the hand-cut scene) It’s also making him realize he would lose her forever either way. He can’t lose her. He *cannot* live without her. He didn’t tell her right away because they were in public and he didn’t know what she would think. He was careful every steps (even the… um… in the carriage) The friends-to-lovers trope is troping so hard. It’s so hard to be certain about anything really; Is it just a phase? Is it all in the head? How would one know? What if it ruins the friendship forever? Would the feelings even return? There are so many questions. I think the issue with us wanting to see Colin grovel more was Netflix doing the dumb 8 episodes and also, the whole Mondridge family plot should've been cut out. I kept forwarding all of their scenes cuz I didn't understand their purpose which made me mad cuz we were losing more Polin moments because of it. If we had more episodes we for sure would've seen more groveling, so for that I blame Netflix and too much subplot tbh
I think people are being to harsh on Colin. Yeah he said a dumb thing but we can see he felt really sorry, he apologised and try to make it right by helpping her finding a husband. Other than that he was always sweet to Pen and everyone else. Its not his fault he didnt know how she feels. He is just oblivius. People acted like he commited a crime or something. Wanting him to suffer. Other characters did far much worse than him and didnt get this much hate.

I totally understand what u mean about needing more from Colin BEFORE the whole marrying part. Luke Newton did fantastically, I just think if we had just a bit more teaching moments and just a bit more moments of Colin being like wait a second and realizing his feelings for Penelope that it would’ve been better. I mean I saw somewhere that they only got like 30 minutes of screen time together for the first half? Of their season?? But yeah, there are 4 more episodes so maybe it’ll work itself out.
I felt the way you guys did when Colin flashbacked to the hand cutting scene. I was wondering why it was a big deal. After some thought, I theorize it's because it's Colin's first indication that Pen might feel something for him too. He's never picked up on it before but in that moment they shared something. I think it's what spurs him to go ahead and confess to Pen (in addition to Debling's proposal).
In regards to the discussion at the end: I saw someone point out that these episodes didn't have any flashbacks, which was a missed opportunity. For example, when Colin recounts how they met at the market, that would've been a perfect moment to show them as giggly embarrassed kids. Or when he laid in bed in the dark, maybe a flashback of how lost he felt when his dad died or how he tried to please everyone during that time. That way when Violet says "You're one of my most sensitive children," we can all agree. I do enjoy Part 1 the more I rewatch it but I feel like the writers got a little lazy since they had 2 seasons of development (even if there were clear moments back then) & too many scenes for the subplots.
Totally agree with your final thoughts. The difference between Simon/Anthony and Colin is that we, the audience, knew why Simon/Anthony were thinking/feeling/acting the way they were via flashbacks. We were inside their heads and could understand them and root for them. We didn't get that with Colin. Fair enough the showrunner didn't want to do flashbacks this season, but his journal was right there as a narrative tool and it was very under utilized in PT1. The one passage we got was great for showing his struggles with lack of emotional intimacy, but maybe more with his struggles as he tries to make sense of his feelings for Penelope? In an interview with the showrunner she said that he only started writing the journal because Penelope wasn't responding to his letters. Like dude, LET THE AUDIENCE IN ON THAT! Have him reread/narrate a passage to that effect! Him reflecting in the impact she's always had on his life. Him writing a passage trying to work out his feelings after the kiss! Cause right now, I'm the Eric Andre at the Gates meme screaming to be let into his head 😅 I think they relied too much on the build up in previous seasons. And as much as I love reading character analysis of Colin that give great insight into his character, or rewatching to pick up more subtle details, I kinda wish I didn't have to because it should have already been shown to me more obviously during his season. Maybe all this is in PT2 and I'm getting ahead of myself tho 🤷🏻♀️

In previous seasons, the love between Daphen and Simon, and Kate and Anthony, was sudden, impetuous, passionate, as if a spark started an uncontrolled fire. This season, Penelope and Colin's love is like a flame in a fireplace. It starts burning gently and then grows to such a size that it warms the whole house. I believe their love is more subtle because they have known each other for so long. They manifest their love in jokes, smiles, gentle touches, compliments and feeling comfortable in each other's company. Colin only shows his true self around Penelope, and Penelope doesn't panic while talking, shows her true wit, her character and feels relaxed in Colin's company, they know they're safe with each other, that one won't ridicule the other.
Yes but I still think friends to lovers can have passion and tension and lust etc while you’re discovering your feelings, otherwise why would anything change? I just wish that after their kiss, we could’ve gotten a lot more attraction between them, it just seemed like Collin was deciding for the entire first half, rather than loving and perusing Pen
He didn't have to pursue her, the minute he knew he went for it. Both the duke and Anthony fought their feelings. Colin is direct, and defied his friends, to me he is the most brave for love @@PinkPopcast

I think the writers had a challange with showing Colin's internal conflict because in the book SO MUCH of his feelings are being contemplated in his head. I know it's no excuse (saying "it was like that in the book") but it might throw new light on some scenes.

This isn’t specifically about this episode, just something cute I noticed about Penelope and Colin during my rewatch of earlier seasons. I loved in episode 2 when Penelope laughs when Colin says they’ll “gallop along” after finding out that Lord Basilio’s horse died, but it was even more special when I rewatched the episode in season 2 when Colin visits Marina. Philip asks Colin if he saw the olive orchards while in Greece and Colin says that yes he “oiled his way in” and Marina just stares at him so he awkwardly clarifies that it was an olive joke. I just love that it shows that Penelope really gets his humour and really loves the dorky side of him. It just made me happy.

I love the carriage scene because the power dynamics in the relationship were always in Colin’s hands whether he knew it or not, but that scene he’s putty in her hands and also for a scene that isn’t over the top explicit, i feel like it was the sexiest scene so far because was super intimate.
Also love the detail that Luke added with Colin not using his soiled fingers to put her sleeve back up. And also it’s funny rewatching that scene because Nicola said recently as a joke during a screening in Ireland that it was important for her to show a body like hers on screen because it’s so rare and then she said, like women with perfect breasts lol! And I can’t argue with that. She’s got the ladies!

To me, Pen and Colin are the soft couple, the awkward ones that are cute and gentle. It's not the type of extreme tension or hate/love. It's the friends to lovers gentleness. They have hot chemistry too, ofc, given the carriage and first kiss, but what i mean is that my expectation to them is to have a tender smile on my lips when they are together and that's why i think this season is so far my favorite. I feel more romantic.

I think this feels like an incomplete love story because it is. Pen spent half her life viewing Colin on a pedestal until he fell from grace with his cruel comments, and now Colin is idealizing Penelope. Colin can't love her only knowing half of who she is. I'm really hoping part 2 will give us that deeper connection that comes with the total acceptance of your partner.

Something I noticed on my rewatches of season 1 and 2 with specific focus on Polin was that there was a lot of parallels in season 3.
I think my favourite one is the contrast between how Colin reacts to Cressida bullying Pen in S1E1 versus how Lord Debling responds to Cressida bullying Pen in S3E1.
In S1, we meet Colin and Penelope when they are talking about the new pink dress she is wearing. Cressida comes onto the scene. She spills her drink onto Penelope’s dress and tries to pass it off as an accident, but Colin immediately clocks on and calls bull. He rejects Cressida’s offer to escort her to the dance floor and instead escorts Penelope, who at first was sad because her new dress she got to pick herself was ruined, but immediately gets happy seeing Colin stand up for her and bonus points, dance with her.
In S3, we have Lord Debling and Penelope talking to each other and then Cressida enters the scene. She pretends to have accidentally stepped on her new green dress, and Lord Debling believes her. He doesn’t notice that she is upset because her new dress which is picked for herself is ruined. Because he doesn’t notice she’s upset, Penelope has to act like she isn’t. Lord Debling leaves her side to fetch a lady’s maid and that’s when she bolts out, passing Colin, who immediately noticed she is upset.
Idk if it’s intentional but I assume it is because it’s a very obvious parallel, but I just thought that was so cool🤷🏾♀️

exactly- from the beginning (season 1) it's clear they both like each other in that way- there are so many times throughout the previous 2 seasons that it's obvious that Colin likes her back- he was always looking at her, seeking her out at balls, he stoped singing when she entered a room in season 1, seeks her out at balls and gatherings, are always alone together and having conversations with each other that are both very in depth and showing similar interests and attention but also some of the conversations they have and how he acts around her you wouldn't have with lady (it would be inappropriate) but it just shows how much he respects and appreciates Penn but also truly loves her- always wanting to talk about anything with her and wanting her opinion and wanting Penn to be happy . He also apologizes and takes steps to repair the/r relationship when he messed up without him believing he will get out of it, he just wants her to be happy.
colin is the typa guy to bring up men’s mental health awareness month to be wholeheartedly genuine in asking other men to open up to each other more and care more about things that actually matter. i love him.
Colin is a sensitive and emotional character so when he feels things he really feels them but tries to hide them out of the best interest of others. I believe that hearing that Penelope could be engaged made him wake up and realise that him trying to show her he loves her was better than leaving her be because he did not feel good enough. A lot of this season was Colin trying to prove himself to be like everyone else, but when it comes to Penelope he cannot act that way. I really love this season so far because I know part 2 will be messy when he is considering his thought and feelings for her although she is Whistledown.

For someone who only saw this season bc of Nicola, and watched a quick compilation of the general story and Polin moments in previous seasons to prepare for it (also Queen Charlotte bc I work with mental health and it intrigued me, considering it’s a bit more historical, even it not super accurate), it is obvious the feelings were always there. Except, unlike a Lady out in society, Colin was not looking (except when he had that infatuation with Marina, and in fact, after her, clearly he was eager to take a break). Penelope was already a perfect partner, but she was also his little sister’s friend. That shift can take a while to manifest, especially with men lol But even the “i would never court her” was a bit defensive. After that, he does a 180, tries to be like his brothers. You see in ep 2 he was already jealous of her before they kissed, when she was talking with that boy. He is constantly downing his drinks when he thinks of her, when she shows up in the green dress, when he gets jealous, when she tells him about his kind eyes, when he wakes up from his dream and Hyacinth tells him she is his friend, etc. actually, he is constantly annoyed every time someone calls her his friend from the moment they kissed. Every time someone says he is helping her find a husband. At the end of the ep 3, he looks borderline suicidal when she chooses to dance with Debling instead of hearing him. The candle wasn’t just him remembering he cut his hand, it was a representation of his will and that time is passing. The flame goes out, he’s running out of time. Then, in the carriage, the minute SHE calls them friends, he is defeated. He spent all this time afraid she might not feel the same, he doesn’t know what we know. He has suspicions, but Violet tells him he has to ask. You can see also, after they laugh together, his decision is made. He looks at her, takes a breath, fixes her dress. He already knew he loved her, now he knows he desires her. And he wants a love, he is tired of pretending he doesn’t. The very passage of his journal she reads is him telling he doesn’t understand how can he be so intimate with someone and feeling so far away at the same time, not connecting. With Penelope, it’s there right away.
Also, LW didn’t destroy his family. In fact, she protects them, though through dubious means. Colin would be stuck raising another man’s twins if not for her, with a woman who would maybe never truly love him. And when Eloise was eventually caught with Theo, not only he’d be most likely killed (Anthony called Simon for a duel, but he is a Duke, Theo is a low class man, Eloise was recklessly endangering them both), not only her, but her other unmarried sisters would be ruined. Remember, when a young lady is caught in scandal with a man, society believes her family is at fault and her sisters are ruined by association. And, both times, Penelope tried to warn them before she had to choose publishing it. Eloise was in trouble with the queen too. Also, LW was, at the time, Penelope’s only hope for the future. She was on her way to becoming a spinster, her father is dead, her family is debt, the new Lord would marry her wicked sister and she’d be at their mercy. Her LW money was her only source of income.
Anyways, for the intricacies of the time, Penelope has it way worse than Eloise, and Eloise is clueless to how her actions can affect others. She risked herself, Theo, her sisters. She made a joke when Cressida told her about having to marry an old man. She mocked a girl for liking embroidery. Not on purpose, but she thinks just bc she disagrees with society, she can act as she pleases. And she can because she has a loving family, brothers and a sister that could support her if she remains unmarried. Penelope’s only hope was LW, because no one was interested in her and she also was holding out for love. Now, she obviously is in a tough spot, but for how it was for women back then, I truly can’t fault her for what she does. She exposed a society that mocked her, she doesn’t lie there, and the times she abused her pen, was to protect people she loved, because she understands how ugly society is better than them.

I actually really like Colin's side because it's a natural personal growth and self-realization he goes through, while actually being more emotionally mature than Simon and Anthony combined 😭
One nearly ruined his life because of pride and the other because of a misplaced feeling of duty (and pride), but with Colin he realizes that the feeling he has are, in fact, romantic and not just a "special friendship" and immediately goes down bad like a wounded deer 😂 He was glancing at her jealously even before Dabling showed up, but after the kiss he's losing touch with reality, lying on the bed like a Renaissance painting, wondering why does it feel this way (because he thought he was in love with Marina when it clearly felt different). And it took him what, 2 weeks before getting on one knee? I think if Dabling wasn't in the picture it would be a week, maybe 2 more for him to reach the same boiling point, since he was already on the trajectory
Can't wait for part 2 to see them together, the only thing that pissed me off in S2 was that they only got together at the VERY END so we didn't see them in the bliss, but it works for different seasons to have different structures (I've heard the books are quite formulaic, at least the first few)

I had very mix feelings about this season, but I admit that I adore it more and more on rewatches. Until part 2 is released, I can't really judge.
What I want to emphasize is that I loved Colin's spiralling in this episode.
He arrived this season with pirate coat on, with cheeky cringy compliments, all smiles, drinking with buddies and having threesomes. Because he got his heart broken in season 1 and people made fun of him in season 2. And apart from Pen and El, everybody loved his new me.
And when he finds out he hurt her, surely he can win her back by helping her, no big deal. She is dear to him, he does not really have other plans, he wants her to be happy. And while does not really know why he is not a fan of a guy she flirts with, who cares?
And then, with one kiss, it all goes to hell.
The first night. Weird dream, but it was quite weird all along, he did not expect to like it as much as he did... But then again, moving on.
The second night, the same thing happens. The lightbulp. Fuck.
And after seven days of not seeing her, they finally meet. And she wants them to keep their distance, embarassed by the whole ordeal, while he sees her each and every night.
It clicks for him, but he is afraid of losing their friendship, but screw it... and once he musters the courage, a titled older well-travelled guy begins to court her. The perfect match on paper. What did she wanted, anyway? Freedom. That guy gives it to her.
Who is he? A third son with no title without clear purpose whom she knows basically all her life.
"Fuck, I don't like this. I want to be casual and charming. I just need some reverly. I will get over this phase."
So he tries to have casual sex. Does not work. Can't even look at them, so just stares blankly into nothingness.
No matter. Time for some guy-bonding time. He always had bad hangovers, but screw it, we shall drink until it all dissapears.
Can't say anything to them. Damn, they are so hollow. "What am I even doing here?"
And no matter what he does, he has the same dream over and over again, driving him insane.
And is even happy about it as they do not even talk now, so this is the only way of really having her in any way.
And then, his hangover ass finds out that this random dude proposes barely after 1 week of courtship 😅. A guy who plans to leave her for 3 years. She can't marry such a dude. She probably does not know!
So he interrupts their dance, funnily does not even acknowledge his presence.
And she wants to say yes! He does not even make puns like we do, does not gallop along! The hell? I coached her and almost went insane so someone like her will spend her days tending a house of a guy who barely shows up?!

Hearing about what you guys expected from Colin, wanting him to express his feelings for Penelope without a guy in the picture...I get it. But also, he kinda does. Colin is the one that closes his hand in the lamp scene to touch her and nobody was interested in her back then. The reason why he didn't reveal it sooner was because he didn't think she wanted him. He almost got the courage on episode three when he says "I" and then mouths "love you". And in the carriage, without music, you can hear him say "beautiful"...I guess, Colin is very subtle. And it gets unnoticed.

The previous couples didn't know each other at first, so their romance was established in a different way than this season. Also, it wouldn't be very interesting to tell the same story again with little variation.
You can tell Colin already felt something for Penelope before, from the way he looked at her, searched for her at every event, was comfortable enough to be himself with her. Probably what needed to happen was that things had to change for him to realize that she was more than his younger sister's best friend.
Since S1, we see Colin as someone who wanted to make other people happy, and also who felt insecure within himself. He wanted to be seen as a man, while people often saw him as a boy, people like Anthony, Marina and even Violet. We even see him wearing similar clothes as Gregory, to visually show us that.
All this time, Colin has been trying to find himself. Penelope not answering his letters when he was traveling contributed to his decision to change, to act the way society expected from a man. We see from the start that it's wrong, but it takes him a while to figure it out.
Also, in their own seasons, Simon and Anthony only figured things out in episode 7 or 8. Colin did it in episode 4.
I can agree with everything in this comment (technically) but it still doesn’t change that neither of us are as ENGAGED with their love as viewers (so far). There’s subtext, and then there’s just plain engaging entertainment… and watching him flashback to a candle was less engaging and more “huh… sure okay I guess”

The thing about the flashback, though, is that it was a moment when Penelope saw a glimpse of the real him, something he didn't show to anyone. In his journal he could talk about his feelings and experiences, without fear of being judged or rejected. Penelope read it, and he got flustered and afraid, to the point where he hurt himself. And still, she tended to his wound, told him that he had a talent, accepted that side of him. That's something he felt he couldn't find with anyone.

As for Colin. I mean, technically, we have seen him loving her. It just took that kiss for him to realize. I think he would have come to that realization eventually without the kiss, but it would have been when she got married, not beforehand. She was always the person he searched for at any social event. She was the person he wrote to. He even asked why she didn't write back because he looked forward to her letters. He said few people wrote him back. I'm going to bet he didn't confront anyone else in the lack of letters. While I agree that I would have liked to see more pining for her with him, because let's face it, she certainly deserves it for holding a candle for him so long, at least he said something finally!

Colin did start liking her before someone else showed interest in her though. Debling was briefly in episode 1 and spoke to Penelope, but Colin didn’t see that. The first time he saw Pen with Debling was during episode 3. By then they had already had multiple moments that made it clear he was feeling something beyond friendship for her. There were moments in Season 1 and Season 2 where he’d stare at her and/or be surprised or impressed by something she’d say, so I think there’s always been *something* there but because they’ve known each other for so long, he never entertained the thought of it ever being more than friendship. I would have liked more insight into Colin coming to this realization (though we might get that in Part Two), but I don’t think him having those feelings is sudden because I think they’ve always been there in some form, nor do I think he only realized he liked her because someone else did. The show runner talked about how it was important for them to show Colin falling for her before he was aware of someone else liking her and I think they did that.

colin changed everything about himself to make other people happy and only when he realizes his feelings for pen do those expectations begin to fall away, he doesn’t care what the ton thinks of her, he never has because he loves her (platonically and romantically). he was constantly putting other peoples needs before his own and this will be something that carries into part 2 if the trailer is to be believed.
even in his relationship with pen (trailer spoilers i guess?) he says that if he can’t protect her he doesn’t understand what else he is good for. he doesn’t believe that him as he is would be enough for her. for anyone.

Portia is downright insufferable in this episode. Even when she thinks she's helping Penelope she's really not. The look on Portia's face after Penelope calls her out 27:05 says it all. she doesn't even realize the emotional damage she's done to her daughter by constantly criticizing and neglecting her until that moment and then she doesn't even have a chance to really deal with it. this is something I'm very much looking forward to in part two will Portia even attempt to repair her relationship with Penelope before she marries Colin and moves out.😊

It's totally okay if you're not quite on the "Polin" train yet or ever. 😂 I don't think it's a matter of one kiss changing Colin's feelings. I think it's a matter of one kiss making him realize that his closeness and feelings he's had for Pen for all of these years were deeper than just friendship. And it's his "stereotypical" attractions to others and his worldview that made him never consider someone as different as Penelope. Things that one kiss has shifted for him as well.
It's 100% friends to lovers. One or both of the friends has to wake up eventually to see that they want more than just a friendship. Because their friendship runs much deeper. Not all friendships do, obviously, but some do and they have to go down this little "awakening" journey to realize it's not just friendship. I think that's why I love it so much! Especially because I'm a sucker for unrequited love tropes and Penelope has had that for Colin for an eternity. 😂

You guys probably won’t read this comment but what I appreciated upon second rewatch through your reaction videos was just how affirming Colin was towards Penelope during the suitor lessons. The suitor lessons weren’t about getting her to be a different person or to put on the charm, but to make the “charming” side of her as he puts it come out of her shell. It shows that he has always appreciated this side of her. “You do not need any lessons”, “You are Penelope Featherington, do not forget that”, “you were oh so very charming”. This is why the market scene with them is one of my favourite scenes, and episode 2 is my favourite (barring the very unnecessary brothel scene), its just a lot of affirmation from Colin that Penelope never really gets to hear from other people, and Penelope in turn affirming Colin. And we’ve heard him give these types of compliments in previous seasons too, so it didn’t seem like it came from nowhere.
In contrast, Lord Debling’s affirmations to Penelope were superficial, “you look especially beautiful tonight, Miss Featherington”, though he lowkey ate his first compliment “why do I have a feeling that you can make one wither with a look” or something like that, and he definitely ate the “I appreciate your frankness” or something like that in episode 3. I did like him though, he was the first person outside of Colin that she could be frank with, but alas it wasn’t meant to be.
I did see though from the posts from Netflix instagram accounts that we get a lot more of Colin affirming Penelope, which she wouldn’t have gotten from Lord Debling because he would’ve been away for 3 years so I’m happy for her in that aspect. And I think we’ll get more growth from them in the second part so I’m excited to see them grow within the relationship, contrasting Kate and Anthony who had to grow before they entered a relationship with the other (before anyone fights me, I love them both, lol)
PS, why were Colin and Penelope lowkey flirting with each other in the market scene? Looking back, she knew how to flirt, just not with men that weren’t Colin, that’s probably why Colin was confused when she was failing hard in front of those other men😂😂😂. Also his little adoring smile that he gives as Penelope attempts to flirt with other men got me a little. Ngl, I was giggling and kicking my feet when I saw him smile like that. If they had just left out the brothel scenes and replaced it with more scenes between them, I would’ve enjoyed them more, but those scenes lowkey undercut the Polin interactions. Audiences don’t want to see the love interest rolling in the hay with anybody who isn’t the main character. We already got that he was putting on a rakish persona when he was flirting with other woman, the brothel scenes just felt gratuitous. Also, in the scene with the candlelight where he’s realising that he’s about to lose Penelope, they should’ve added an additional flashback to season 2 to show him realising that he’s always had feelings for Penelope. But other than that, I’m quite frankly fine with this season, the comedy has been turned up to a ten, the Polin interactions we did get were cute and they are in general a cute pair. Hopefully we get to see more of them in part 2 than we did part 1, I’m pretty sure from all the non-spoiler reviews I’ve seen, we are.

My thoughts on the reason for the candle flashback scene was Colin remembering Pen reading his innermost thoughts, and she was not judgmental of them in any way, and complimented his writing. He views himself as not enough bc he doesn't enjoy the things that society expects a man to like, and tried to change himself bc of it. I think it made him realize Pen might like him for him and not his façade, and that's what gave him the final push to go after her.

Love your analysis, in the book it was the first time he felt a spark when Pen wrapped his cut hand. In the show the showed that moment by him closing his fingers with hers. If you watch it with the audio description it says Colin closes his fingers with hers. When they felt that spark they both got flustered. This happened before the kiss in both the book and the show. The flame going out reminded him of the spark and motivated him to go get his wife before that strange man married her.
Yeah being gone for three years at the beginning of a marriage even for practical reasons is alot and then for him to say he can't even think that there is a potential for love due to his work is Crazy

34:35 there were scenes of him wanting her before someone. in this season and in previous scenes. he just didn’t REALIZE it. that’s the whole point. it’s not as noticeable too because it wasn’t their seasons. it’s very clear when colin was describing how much pen meant to him in the other seasons, it’s not really a platonic description but he’s young and dumb and didn’t realize that. this season isn’t just about love. it’s about them finding themselves and their purpose. colin is realizing his purpose IS penelope.

It was said by the actors themselves that the kiss does not spark the love from Colin’s side but instead confirming it. Maybe it’s because Im always a fan of Polin and their book is my fav so I alwaysss focus on their little interactions in s1 and s2 so watching s3, unlike others, I did not find it too sudden? In fact it felt so natural to me. Their little interactions in previous seasons are enough to set the foundation of how both of them admire and respect one another and how their words carry weight and affect each other very much. The feeling, the connection, has always been there even for Colin but it was never named.
I feel like as a book reader, you might have a little extra context that we didn’t get over here on Netflix 😂

Lady Danbury believes her brother to still be a rake, but I like his interactions with Violet being the opposite. He sees her as a potential love match. He seeks out this connection with her and loves what they have in common. I also feel they are intellectual equals as well.
And I love how he asks his sister about not any woman, but Violet even though he did not use her name with Lady Danbury yet.
“She did not drink the lemonade” is one of my favorite lines in all of Bridgerton.
The psyche and eros parallels. I love hearing people talk about that and provide more insight on that. The writers thought about a lot.

21:21 I think he doesn’t know if he should risk it or let her secure her proposal. Even though he is miserable, he still prioritizes her. He doesn’t know if she feels the same, he might ruin her chances and definitely their relationship.
Then the candle goes out, reminding him of when he knocked it over, and she tended to his wound. Maybe she cares for him… maybe she reciprocates his feelings.
(The scene also remind me of when they talked about the incident when they first met. He thinks she was charming about it! He probably thinks so too in the hand-cut scene)
It’s also making him realize he would lose her forever either way. He can’t lose her. He *cannot* live without her.
He didn’t tell her right away because they were in public and he didn’t know what she would think. He was careful every steps (even the… um… in the carriage)
The friends-to-lovers trope is troping so hard. It’s so hard to be certain about anything really; Is it just a phase? Is it all in the head? How would one know? What if it ruins the friendship forever?
Would the feelings even return? There are so many questions. Lucky for him, she’s been in love with him all this time, if not since the first time they met 🥰

Pen has been waiting for this for SOOO long, my girl deserves that moment to feel in power like she did. I feel like Colin has always loved Penelope, but it took him talking to Violet to realize that love was there all along and he had to be brave enough to take a chance even if it meant ruining their friendship forever. I think the issue with us wanting to see Colin grovel more was Netflix doing the dumb 8 episodes and also, the whole Mondridge family plot should've been cut out. I kept forwarding all of their scenes cuz I didn't understand their purpose which made me mad cuz we were losing more Polin moments because of it. If we had more episodes we for sure would've seen more groveling, so for that I blame Netflix and too much subplot tbh

I think people are being to harsh on Colin. Yeah he said a dumb thing but we can see he felt really sorry, he apologised and try to make it right by helpping her finding a husband. Other than that he was always sweet to Pen and everyone else. Its not his fault he didnt know how she feels. He is just oblivius. People acted like he commited a crime or something. Wanting him to suffer. Other characters did far much worse than him and didnt get this much hate.

I totally understand what u mean about needing more from Colin BEFORE the whole marrying part. Luke Newton did fantastically, I just think if we had just a bit more teaching moments and just a bit more moments of Colin being like wait a second and realizing his feelings for Penelope that it would’ve been better. I mean I saw somewhere that they only got like 30 minutes of screen time together for the first half? Of their season?? But yeah, there are 4 more episodes so maybe it’ll work itself out.

I felt the way you guys did when Colin flashbacked to the hand cutting scene. I was wondering why it was a big deal. After some thought, I theorize it's because it's Colin's first indication that Pen might feel something for him too. He's never picked up on it before but in that moment they shared something. I think it's what spurs him to go ahead and confess to Pen (in addition to Debling's proposal).
In regards to the discussion at the end: I saw someone point out that these episodes didn't have any flashbacks, which was a missed opportunity. For example, when Colin recounts how they met at the market, that would've been a perfect moment to show them as giggly embarrassed kids. Or when he laid in bed in the dark, maybe a flashback of how lost he felt when his dad died or how he tried to please everyone during that time. That way when Violet says "You're one of my most sensitive children," we can all agree.
I do enjoy Part 1 the more I rewatch it but I feel like the writers got a little lazy since they had 2 seasons of development (even if there were clear moments back then) & too many scenes for the subplots.

Totally agree with your final thoughts. The difference between Simon/Anthony and Colin is that we, the audience, knew why Simon/Anthony were thinking/feeling/acting the way they were via flashbacks. We were inside their heads and could understand them and root for them. We didn't get that with Colin. Fair enough the showrunner didn't want to do flashbacks this season, but his journal was right there as a narrative tool and it was very under utilized in PT1. The one passage we got was great for showing his struggles with lack of emotional intimacy, but maybe more with his struggles as he tries to make sense of his feelings for Penelope?
In an interview with the showrunner she said that he only started writing the journal because Penelope wasn't responding to his letters. Like dude, LET THE AUDIENCE IN ON THAT! Have him reread/narrate a passage to that effect! Him reflecting in the impact she's always had on his life. Him writing a passage trying to work out his feelings after the kiss! Cause right now, I'm the Eric Andre at the Gates meme screaming to be let into his head 😅
I think they relied too much on the build up in previous seasons. And as much as I love reading character analysis of Colin that give great insight into his character, or rewatching to pick up more subtle details, I kinda wish I didn't have to because it should have already been shown to me more obviously during his season. Maybe all this is in PT2 and I'm getting ahead of myself tho 🤷🏻♀️
