      While Bridgerton makes it seem that way, there is no evidence that people did not know about sex. Especially anyone who was not upoer class lived in very close vicinity often to animals and parents. Also, this is before the over-prudence and piety of victorian times. These girls were meant to bring heirs into the families, chances are, they did know the basics at the very least.

      The father from Pride and Prejudice also kind of falls under this category I think. I guess he did tease his wife quite often, but most of the time he'd let her and the daughters do what they wanted, no matter how ridiculous they got. He just wanted peace and books.

      @Evija3000 the father from Pride and Prejudice was also not taking the situation seriously enough. They had 5 daughters and no son.
      The mom was right, if they didn't marry fast enough they would be put in serious danger when he died with no one to take care of them.
      Sure, the mom did a lot of bad things, but she had a point. Her methods of trying to get Bingley married to Jane were wrong, but it would have been useful if they married rich in order for her other daughters to have more opportunities and be taken care of well if their dad died suddenly. It's even said in the book that once Lizzy, Jane and Lydia married, she calmed down.

      @@voulafisentzidis8830 I disagree, I think it’s an interesting twist and having a modern spin on what is otherwise a pretty commonly done story was pretty refreshing but to each their own I guess. I always think of any retelling through different media as a different story or a different version of the same story, almost like a parallel universe kind of thing but I know a lot of people like things to be super true to the original source material. I’m mixed Asian though and a lot of times in Asian tv shows and films you’ll see different countries version of the same story so I’m used to that different take on the same story thing.

      @@laurajaynenolan2149 unlike you, I'd prefer that Netflix write and film original stories if it has no intentions of respecting the source material.
      Watching re-imagined classical stories - the worst being Netflix's version of Persuasion - just confirms their ignorance in changing the story and heroine to such an extent, both became unrecognisable.
      In my view, there's no place for modern mores in stories written 250 years ago as the implication is that humans haven't evolved during those centuries.

    • @dantemaquiavelli9039
      @dantemaquiavelli9039 Рік тому +61

      @@voulafisentzidis8830 Stories written 250 years ago??? The Bridgerton series is based of a fairly recent series of novels from the early 2000s, so it really doesn't apply to this case. And if anything they weren't that great to begin with. They follow the same typical romance storyline of cheap period dramas. They're not necessarily bad, but they were written to have some fun and enjoy the reading without thinking to much.
      As for older stories, I can understand that someone might not like modern retellings because they might like the historical background they where written in, but that's something incredibly subjective. The problem with Persuasion was that they wanted to make a comedy out of a dramatic story, where the character spends most of the story living partially ignored and depressed.
      But we can find plenty of stories where adaptations maintained the essence of the story but also introducing it to a new public.
      As for Bridgerton, I would argue the change of race and characters was better than worse in the end. I won't talk if the racial representation present was good or bad, because I don't find myself in the position to do so.
      But I will say that the casting gave it more popularity and press that the story by itself would have been, specially considering, as I have mentioned before, the book series isn't different from other historical romances with the same problematic behaviours and same plot points.

      @@sabinajohjust to add from what the previous reply said. There are few original sketches of Queen Charlotte left, and it does show she was ‘darker’ than most royals of the time. However, it has been noted by historians that history has been whitewashed. There are many royals and high society members whose current portraits show them as white, but newspaper interviews and other literary works describe them as moor, or with coarse hair, or dark complexion. The movie Chevalier; if I hadn’t watched it I wouldn’t have gotten curious about it. Through all my history classes I always thought he was white, he wasn’t. To add further context about whether the queen and Lady Danbury loved their kids, it's is noted that when it comes to Queen Charlotte Charlotte does love her kids and wants the best for them, but the duties of ruling England in place of her mentally ill husband as well as the constant struggle to keep her reputation as Queen in pristine check due to her position as a WOC made it so that she didn't have enough time with them to fulfil their needs (Which adds context as to why QC beefs with LW in Bridgeton so much; Penelope is constantly challenging QC on her authority and ability to do *anything*, especially when it comes to her family, which is shown to be something that she is severely sensitive about. )
    As for Lady Danbury, Its made very obvious that Lady Danbury has had to endure marital (thing that rhythms with grape) and it's said multiple times that she does not particularly like her husband all that much and her kids are most likely *his* kids as well, so seeing them and interacting and forming a familial connection with them in a household that was founded on a unloving union that stemmed from borderline child marriage and marital grape wasn't really an option.
    But Benji is right, it is weird that two of the biggest WOC on the show are at least highlighted to being unloving mothers *is weird*

    The succession crisis was a real problem the royal family faced during this period and was only saved with the birth of the future Queen Victoria from George and Charlotte's son Edward. Though it's also Victoria that brought hemophilia into many royal bloodlines.

    • @saranemcova5448
      @saranemcova5448 8 місяців тому +13

      The problem is that it does not matter how many people you have in one generation if the other generation is non-existing.
      The Queen had many sons. Only the eldest produced a legitimate child. One legitimate child. That was the beloved princess named after the Queen who died delivering Queen's great-grandchild.
      The death of the princess pushed for princes to marry, resulting in one heir fathered by one of the younger sons - Queen Victoria. Her own father never became the king. Victoria suceeded two of her uncles (one of them being the father of the dead princess; the other one determined to survive until Victoria's eighteen birthday to make sure Victoria's mother and her lover won't get a chance to rule in her stead; he suceeded, dying a month later).

    To answer you the reason the Mecklenburg-Strelitz siblings have british accents is because they are royalty. Obviously they speak german but when they were taught english it is taught to speak properly accented as well which at the time posh was the most common accent. Tbh im not sure why Friedrich has an accent in Bridgerton as he most likely would have been taught brit english since birth for royal reasons.

    so also historical context-this was a real issue in the line of succession. The princess royal was the heir after her father (the man crying i believe), so there is no one to really take over after him. sure, his brothers can inherit the thrown (i think that is what happened), but without that brother or any other sibling havng a legitimate heir, it will fall to someone outside the immediate family (a cousin or something-or may start a war). This is how queen victoria came to be. after charlotte's husband george III, george IV (his son) took over, after IV died his brother william took over as king but had no heirs, so after he died victoria became the heir because her father passed along with all other siblings and she was like the only offspring at that point.

    The most pedantic thing that drives me wild about Bridgerton/Queen Charlotte: the scenes with the string players. They clearly got people who can actually play (looking at you cello dude with the vibrato) but then presumably didn't let them play resulting in the most distracting non-playing I've ever seen! In the first shot during the wedding, one of them is holding the bow 2 inches above the strings but is "playing" and the others aren't moving their fingers but are hover-bowing😂 This happens repeatedly in Bridgerton too.

    Charlotte has Moor (not more) blood. Moors were the Muslims of North Africa who traveled to and lived in Spain (and Portugal?) during the Middle Ages. Othello (from Shakespeare) was a Moor.
