I live in Maine and we have bears and lots of them top to bottom of the state. Those of us used to it don’t have issues but not growing up with and living with bears and it could be dangerous. Hunting is best control system to manage them though even though some people won’t like it. They won’t like it until fluffy the cat or spot the dog gets shredded and eaten in front of the kids watching out the back some Sunday morning. Limited controlled hunt done by a lottery system would most likely do the trick and fund more programs for the state to work on population control.
If they approve it and you end up deciding to cook bear to eat make sure you cook it well done, there's a good chance you'll get trichinosis if you undercook it.

That lady is crazy. If I find a bear anywhere near my house, it’s a dead bear period!
