Massive Black Bear Ruins Homeowner’s Relaxation Time

- avid Oppenheimer was relaxing after returning home from work when he received an alert about movement on his porch. The doorbell video captured the moment Oppenheimer and the bear made eye contact. When Oppenheimer looked up, he was face-to-face with a giant black bear. That's when a stare-down between him and the beast ensued. Oppenheimer stayed calm to avoid startling the bear. However, he was relieved when the bear eventually ran off.
I like how the bear and homeowner basically had the same physical reaction. Both got behind some cover and stared at each other.

The same thing happened to me in Asheville a couple years ago. I was sunbathing and smelled like coconut tanning oil -- and the bear was only a foot from me, staring me down, eye to eye. It was a truly spiritual experience - that I don't want to repeat...

Years ago I was in northern California and I had a similar encounter with a black bear. They generally know that encountering humans is a bad thing and will run off.
I was more concerned about the Elk as they would not readily run away and in many cases will charge at you and stomp you into a pulp.
That human was so scary and monstrous. Thank God I managed to run for my life.
I lived in asheville for 15 years, this is incredibly common.

Very rare chance of that. You have a better change in getting assaulting in a city or small city compared to passing by animals with rabies in a rural area.
Besides, they're way easier to handle than fighting a potential thug anyway.
I bike home everyday in the summer wondering “am I gonna be ripped apart by a giant trash raccoon just cause it can’t get into a dumpster?” Happened to a guy in redlake around my area, guy went out to pick blue berries, got in a bears way, and it ripped him to shreds, his head, torso and legs were all separated, it was messed up. Lol I know that’s not exactly a dumpster, but nature can be unpredictable so I always stay vigilant and keep my hands near my bear mace just in case lol.

I'm glad that bear was having a good day and didn't attack that man. Black bears aren't that aggressive but who knows what they might do. I think I would be building a tall fence around my yard especially if you have small animals and children. I can't imagine living among the bears and they show up not invited.😳
I live next to the GSMNP. We have so many bears I keep the high powered electric fence around my homestead and barns hot at all times. I keep a shotgun loaded with rubber slugs in my truck. If a bear gives me a half a chance I’ll pop his butt with a rubber slug. The best thing you can do for a bear is condition it to avoid humans.

Another way of looking at this scene is that a bear comes back home to rest on its patio but gets startled by a human lounging in the bear's chair.
I live 12 miles west of Asheville, and that is a baby by mountain standards. We see bears that size once in a great while, but mama usually will call them back up the mountain. Bear was looking for lunch. Great video catching both reactions!
You don't have much to worry about with a black bear. Stay calm, talk gently to it and if it doesn't move off, make a loud noise. They scar off really easy.😊
Most folks don't know that. There is a UA-camr who lives in Ashville who shares videos of the bears that come up on his porch regularly. Whenever they get a little too sassy he simply stands up and yells "get on out of here" (or in proper Southern "Git"
The baby bears even had a close encounter with the cat one year. Momma bear just watched as the baby bear was schooled by the cat. Lol
