The part where Akeem gives the two homeless guys some money is significant because: the two guys are the guys from Trading Places, an earlier Eddie Murphy film that you also have to watch. He wanted to give them a cameo to show his appreciation for being in their film early in his career. It was truly a uniquely sweet gesture. I didn't want you to miss the meaning of it.
I mentioned this on another Coming to America reaction but when I got married, after they announced "husband and wife," my wife allowed me to play, "Sheeeee's your...queeeeeeen toooooo beeeeee" as we walked down the aisle. Only about half the guests understood the reference but it got a good laugh.
Fun Fact: For the movie's 30th anniversary a few years ago, an independently operated McDonald's in Chicago "dressed" as McDowell's for Halloween. The owner changed the sign, the menu and the employee uniforms. It was brilliant. Also, James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair would go on to voice Simba's parents in "The Lion King" (1994). Playing a King and Queen once again.

Didn’t he call him Mr Mufasa, or something? I only ask bc Jones happened to be wearing a lion pelt when he said that, and I wondered “is he unaware that he voiced Mufasa, and he just called him that by coincidence?”

He played the older Kunta Kinte in Roots which was what the barber called Akeem when they saw him again. Also in an awesome movie from the 70’s called Let’s Do it Again with Sidney Poitier and Calvin Lockhart who plays the father of Akeems intended. A certain rapper got his name from that movie…wasn’t allowed to for long though, at least not legally 😊
I will still yell out, "SEXUAL CHOCOLATE!" randomly from time to time. I love this movie so much. I saw it with my parents and brother in the theater and my dad was laughing his ass off the whole time. Edited: It was so cold that winter here in NY. They had to be miserable during some of those scenes.

I was going to say about it! Every time I saw that part, I couldn't help myself giggling and watching those around me not knowing what was going on. This is subtle but very powerful.
Most people have no clue what is this movie all about...Eddie Murphy character is actually symbolic representation of S A T A N. Searches for pure girl to corrupt and he did it.That is why he refused all of other girls since they were corrupted including one that says she worships S A T A N...already.
Coming to America is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. They play it literally every week on cable, that's how much of a classic it is. My favorite part is when Lisa kisses Akeem, and he goes home singing. That is exactly how you feel when you meet someone special. ❤
Also in the 80s I remember it making a full year in the theaters. It went from one summer to another summer. Murphy is the master. He isn’t what he used to be but he left lifetimes of humor for us. We can’t be 20 forever. He’s simply the best.
Everyone in the Barber Shop, minus Cuba Gooding, is played by either Murphy or Hall. And Yes, Murphy is also the lead singer of Sexual Chocolate! Plus, I love that Samuel Jackson was in this!

I remember seeing this when it first came out and the laughing going on in the theater made it even funnier. 😂😂😂😂All the different characters he and Arsenio played are now iconic!! One of my favorites movies of all time.
The Queen in this movie is an amazing example of something we don't really have in a lot of movies today. She is a strong female character that is well written within the context of the story. She isn't trying to out man the men, she isn't trying to be the boss of the world, but when her cub is hurt she is willing to bring out the claws and fangs even on the one person she is supposed to be subserviently to within the tradition they both grew up in. She is an example of one of the most important things a man needs in his life; a partner that is willing to call him out on his bullshit.
Marge Sinclair. She was also Simba's mother in the Lion King along side James Earl Jones "Mufasa". She died from cancer in 1995 a year after the Lion King was released. RIP
I was excited that you were watching this movie, not just because it’s so hilarious but because I got to hear Asia laugh a lot! Now that’s a very special laugh! 😃😂
Great Reaction! This is still my favorite Eddie Murphy movie and favorite comedy. So many scenes that are funny. Ohan singing the song as the bride to be walks down is one of my favorites, especially when you listen to the lyrics ("Completely free from infection......") And they way he sings and then returns to his original demeanor. Again, great reaction y'all!
i had only ever seen this movie dubbed in French here in Quebec, Eddie Murphy was rather popular when I was growing up in the 80s and i remember us kids renting out a lot of his movies on VHS from the local place, pretty cool to see it in it's original language, so many things make way more sense.
He sounds like the guy from nutty professor 😂😂😂. OMG! I feel out my chair when you said that. Eddie Murphy is known for playing multiple parts in his movies.
Nice! I wathced all of them on television, during the 90s! Nice, sweet memory, me, my dad (who's now dead) and my mom, sittin' on the sofa, in fron of the tv.
I was freshman in HS when this movie came out, and every time I see the ‘soul glow’ it takes me back, I can smell the coco butter- I’m Mexican and went to an all black HS, everyone was using activator, all day long they would spray their hair, in class, in the hallways, on the bus… we had to share helmets on the football team- so everyday I came home smelling like coco butter- Good times Great content! Great reactions! Best ‘reactors’ on YT
James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair (RIP). The two of them made a great team because this wasn't the last time they played an African king and queen. King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi from The Lion King were voiced by these two icons a year before Madge passed away from leukemia. With or without his legendary voice, James is a mindblowing actor. Even at age 92 he's still got it.
wow all the memories that came back watching this again after so long. LOL. Arsenio and Eddie also play the parts of the men in the barbershop. they did multiple roles. Great job.
Gotta post again. Mortimer and Randolph are from Trading Places which also features Eddie Murphy. It's a must watch and will fill you in on why they are homeless and proclaimed... "we're back".
Asia laughing is just the best! I had a rough day at work and when I saw this reaction, I was pumped! This movie is one of the best comedy movies of all time. Thanks for making my evening😎
May have been already said, but James Earl Jones, Musafa voice is also Darth Vader voice. I didn’t read all of the comments so sorry for a repeat if so.
SHE'S NEVER SEEN THIS?!? This is a STAPLE for people our age. Yea it was before our time but this is PRIME tbs, prime comedy central in the late 90s early 2000's along with trading places, ferris buller's day off, all the 80's hits. I'm surprised but also its great we get to see her watch this for the first time. This is a cinema ICON. edit - I know John Amos as Mr. McDowell AND as the badass marine in Die Hard 2, "Sergeant, get this bureaucrat out of Mr. McLane's face, NOW" and "No you were right, I'm just you're kind of asshole" no spoilers . . . but the following scenes are *chef's kiss*
I love this movie so much! I can’t believe y’all have never seen this. It’s such a classic and has everything for a great story: comedy, family, modern love (value your partner for who they are), kindness, etc. And can we talk about the talent and great comedy duo that is Eddie and Arsenio? This is my favorite Eddie Murphy movie with The Golden Child being a close 2nd. *Remember The Time music video was after this in 1992, and Eddie Murphy played the king and Iman was the queen. Even Magic Johnson was in it, lol. Great song, btw.
When James Earl Jones speaks, I hear Darth Vader. “Do not alert him to my presence. I shall deal with him myself.” Is a Return Of The Jedi reference/Easter egg! 😉
I grew up with this movie. Total classic. When I first heard that they were making a sequel with Eddie and others from the original cast I freaked. Couldn't wait. I'll let you decide how that went.
omg I am sooo surprised this is your first watch!!! I can’t wait to hear BJ’s commentary and Asia’s contagious laugh!! Hope you catch the Trading Places reference! Eddie and Arsenio did so many characters! Vanessa Bell Calloway was so young in this, she also played in What’s Love Got to Do With it as Tina Turner friend/ backup singer/dancer. If you haven’t seen that one please do!!!! Also the wife was Mufasa wife’s voice as well. RIP!

An absolutely perfect comedy movie. Also, perfect casting for Lisa. Makes total sense that Akeem would fall for her.
This is a classic. A comedic masterpiece. And full of culture. Y’all better recognize this as one of the GOATS
Holy crap Asia’s laugh kills me😂😂 This movie is a classic, and to use so many quotes all the time from the movie. Your reaction is exactly what I figured it would be!!!!
The actress that plays the queen is also the voice of Sarabi… simbas mom!
RIP
This movie never gets old!!❤😂
I know this isn't a kids movie but me and my siblings watched this all the time growing up. The Reverand and Randy Watson still crack me up! 😆
This was a great movie. Eddie at the height of his talents.
To this day I still use “that boy good!” With a stupid chuckle 😂😂
🧡 Asia's facial expressions showing pure utter disbelief it alway so amusing to me! 😂😂😂
I was excited that you were watching this movie, not just because it’s so hilarious but because I got to hear Asia laugh a lot! Now that’s a very special laugh! 😃😂
Mortimer and Randolph were the 2 brothers that Eddie and Dan Akroyd sent to the poor house in “Trading Places”.
Ralph Bellamy, Randolph, Honorary Oscar. Don Ameche, Mortimer, Oscar for "Cocoon." Both began in films in the 1930's.
Asia laughing at SOUL GLOW had me dying...
It’s even funnier that Eddie Murphy is singing in the ad. 😏
Yes Asia, it is Mufasa and also Darth Vader, and that's all not forget the Sandlot or Field of Dreams I loved James Earl Jones
Great time to be alive in the 80’s. Watching all of these movies on the big screen was so awesome.
Nice! I wathced all of them on television, during the 90s! Nice, sweet memory, me, my dad (who's now dead) and my mom, sittin' on the sofa, in fron of the tv.
I still can't believe you have never seen this? It's like princess bride, a frickin classic!
Classic comedy! Everyone involved at the top of their game. I don't want to imagine a world without Eddie Murphy.
I loved Arsenio in Harlem Nights, he was absolutely hilarious. For such a small role, he was a standout.
I was freshman in HS when this movie came out, and every time I see the ‘soul glow’ it takes me back, I can smell the coco butter-
I’m Mexican and went to an all black HS, everyone was using activator, all day long they would spray their hair, in class, in the hallways, on the bus… we had to share helmets on the football team- so everyday I came home smelling like coco butter-
Good times
Great content!
I love you two. Asia's laugh makes me happy, and every time BJ has a realization I love it. Thank you two for another great experience.
OMG Asia killing it on the "Just let your SOUL GLOW!" bit had me dyin! Love your reactions! 💖
Yes James Earl Jones voices Mufasa, but also Madge Sinclair who plays the queen, is also the voice of Simba’s mom /queen in the Lion King!
And of course, Darth Vader... 👍👍👍👍
wow all the memories that came back watching this again after so long.
The King is the fabulous James Earl Jones. He also did the voice of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars movies.
McLane's face, NOW" and "No you were right, I'm just you're kind of asshole" no spoilers . . . but the following scenes are *chef's kiss*
such a timeless classic, I´ve watched this movie a dozen times
I remember them filming around my neighborhood back in 87, driving past Wendy’s and wondering what the heck Mcdowell’s was 😂
This is legit one of my favorite movies. Top notch comedy. Still holds up phenomenally well.
Ain't no way yall never seen this classic. How did you miss this one? 😂😂 it's one of my all time favorites. Can't wait to watch it with yall
I'm so happy you watched the credits roll!
I could friggin cry! 😭
Mufasa & dearth Vader , what a voice.
I grew up watching this one with my family. We ended up watching the sequel a few years back all together. Glad y'all checked it out!
5:30 yes both the king and queen in this are the king and queen in the lion king.
RIP!
"Alright, I'll taste the damn soup! Where's the spoon?! .. aha." That was so random and funny, great addition to the ending. 😄
Randolph and Mortimer cameo. 😂
I don't think they recalled them from Trading Places
John Amos and Marge Sinclair (the queen) also starred in a popular mini series in the 70s called "Roots". They played husband and wife.
*Madge Sinclair also voiced Simba’s mother, Sarabi, in Lion King. James Earl Jones voiced his father
Asia, you have the most beautiful, genuine laugh. I love watching yall react.
