I have been an ICU nurse and a Hospice nurse. Outside of trauma or a lightening strike illness like an aneurysm where you might literally drop dead, people tend to die in the circumstances they choose. I have seen families where there are a half dozen people at the bedside, and the patient will wait for that one minute where someone’s gone to get a sweater from another room, some else is paying the pizza delivery guy, a third person is washing their hands, etc., and slip away. Others will hang on long past what medical science would expect, waiting for someone to arrive. If someone you love leaves before you can get to them, they didn’t want you to witness their last breath - they wanted to spare you that memory. If they hang on until some arrives, they wanted the family together to console each other. Some people want to die alone, others want a great gaggle of people. I think it’s fitting that the two oldest, who were such company for each other when they were little and their parents went on trips around the world, were together at her passing.

When my father passed from cancer, we were with him the day before he died in the hospital, by which time he was heavily medicated to save him the intense pain. The last person he recognized was my mother, about two days before he died. He had ceased to recognize me or any other family members before then. I don't know if he chose his time of passing, when he slipped away in the middle of the night, but I know it was a comfort to him to sense my mother was there (she left after he went into a coma), and it was certainly a comfort to her to know she was there as long as he could get any benefit from her presence. To be honest, even the short amount of sleep she and I got the night of his death helped us cope through all the funeral arrangements, including contacting family and friends with the news. Not everyone can be there at a bedside, so I hope no one feels guilty at not being able to be at their loved one's side at the last.

Nellie Olsen as an ex Hospice Nurse I seconded this statement. I had a young patient (18yrs) told me I was her “ favourite nurse”, and waited two days for me to return from days off before she departed. It was one I will never forget as she loudly told us “ how beautiful it was ( what she was seeing ) and wished that we all could see the same.

This is so true. When my father was in hospice my mom and I sat with him the day he died for the better part of the day. In my heart I knew that my father wouldn’t die in front of my mother so I suggested I take her home for a break and then I would come back and sit with my dad late into the evening. After I got my mom home and settled the nursing home called and he passed. I just knew it in my heart that that’s how he wanted it. Even though he was not responsive I had a hunch he could hear us talking to him. He went out of the world loved and we said everything we needed to say. I know that gave my mom comfort knowing it’s quite possible he could hear what she was saying. I think if I had been there by myself it would’ve been a different story but he must’ve know my mom just couldn’t handle that and he slipped away peacefully.

That's very well said. Queen Elizabeth was the same age as my aunt Leda who was born and raised in Canada and she lived in Canada all of her life. She past away 10 years ago in August. I hardly knew her very well since I only attended one family reunion where she was there. Which was 22 years ago. So if she was still alive today she to would be 96 years old today just like the queen. But my aunt Leda was about a couple of months older than the queen. She was married to her first husband at age 12 in 1938. She had several children through her first husband. Then she remarried to another man shortly after her first husband's death. She was born and raised on a farm in New Brunswick, Canada. And so she lived in a British commonwealth nation her entire life under the reign of Queen Elizabeth. But in her life she has seen the death of George V and George VI and the abdication of King Edward VIII in her life as a commonwealth subject to the British monarchs and she witnessed Queen Elizabeth become queen herself while living in New Brunswick, Canada all of her life. My aunt Leda was born in Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska, Madawaska, New Brunswick, Canada on January of 1926 to her parents Leon Pierre St. Pierre and Odile Odelie Berube. She was my grandfather's older sister. My grandfather was the baby of the family as the youngest child of their parents of 11 children. With only about 8 of their children living into adulthood. Where there were several of their brothers who died as infants. Which aunt Leda past away at the age of 86 years old. She was living in a nursing home in New Brunswick, Canada at the time of her death 10 years ago. Her health was not doing very well by June of that year 10 years ago so my grandparents went to Canada to visit with her for that time. But I don't know if they stayed there by her side until the day she died. I just know that her baby brother and his wife traveled up there to visit with her during that time period.
Because it's always good to have your family together with you as you are about to die. So I feel that it was good that queen Elizabeth had her eldest son and daughter with her at the moment she died. Just like my aunt Leda having her baby brother there at her side at the moment she breathed her last breath.

@@elizabethcompton738 God bless you for all you did for her that nobody will ever fully know. I’m sorry for your loss but it sounds like you assured her dignity and gave her a good qualify of life that nobody else can deny. I’m sure she loved and appreciated you for all you did. 10 years is a long time. I’m 7 months in taking care of my grandmother 24/7. I’m just now getting a little tired. But it’s okay. I’m 25 and there is nobody else available to move to San Antonio like I did to care for her. So here I am… washing, shopping, cooking, cleaning, paying the bills and managing finances, taking care of her home and her car that she doesn’t drive anymore, watching her favorite shows with her, and cleaning toilets as I did 2 hours ago. We have a woman come to take care of her personal needs. The woman is family. Grandma has 8 siblings and they come over when I need them for repairs to the house like replace a ceiling fan recently in my room. They bring me food. They call and encourage me. And they live here in the same city. But they are elderly and have their own health issues and spouses. I’m happy to put my life on hood for a few years and take care of my family. It’s saving her money to stay in this house and jus pay for utilities and yard work and food. She has a good amount of money left over each month even after she tells me to pay myself. I told her I’m family and we have to help each other rather than dumping them with strangers somewhere. Thankful she doesn’t have to go to one of those assisted living facilities. Praying she doesn’t fall. If you have any tips you want to share I’d love to hear them. I’m here for the long haul. Grandma is 84 just for reference. She was alone here for 9 years and I came to visit and saw she can’t live alone so I moved here in February. And I got things caught up and up to speed and made repairs. Threw out old foods and restocked. Giving her vitamins and supplements and she likes to drink Ensure in the mornings. Anyways I’ll stop here. It gets lonely here while she sleeps a lot. I don’t go out much at all. Just the grocery store and pharmacy about every 10 days. I caught Covid one day in July and brought it home unknowingly and she got it 3 days later so we battled here together. We made it! It was hard.
Thanks for what you did. Hope to hear from you.

I figured they had the best food, the best medical care but she kept working up to the bitter end. She worked harder than anybody else. I have always admired her stamina, and the long distances she could walk. She did give birth to 4 children if that tears down the body I don’t know. She really watched her weight and never got heavy like her mother or Queen Victoria. The fact that she still rode horses for so long was amazing. I’ve suffered from arthritis since I was 23 and I had to have my first knee replaced over 25 years ago. She could walk way farther than I could. I liked her sense of humor.

@@scented-leafpelargonium3366 yes, sadly it wasn't meant to hurt or insult anyone, I don't think. "Spunk" means that she (QEII) was full of life and never gave up as the previous poster suggested. She had guts and willpower. Full of determination for example could be another way of putting it. I'm from across the pond from England but have roots from Scotland but I guarantee there could be some words that I'd type/say that likely would make a person's hair stand on end but it wouldn't in any way be insulting or meant to be insensitive. It's just the differences between the backgrounds.

@@marilynhynes5414 Yes, you're absolutely right, but I have been in situations where the usage of it caused confusion or embarrassment among non-Americans. I worked in a Church of England Guest House in Jaffa, Israel, in the 1990s as a chef. In fact I first wrote to The Queen from there and got a cordial reply from her Lady-In-Waiting.
One American guest who stayed for a few months, accompanying me to my Hebrew classes in the city (at a time when buses were being blown apart by suicide bombers) used this word at the communal dinner table for staff and guests, saying to one volunteer from Blackpool, England, "Simon, you're full of spunk!" and the young chap spluttered the drink he was drinking all over the table as he wasn't expecting this demure elderly lady to come out with that exact statement!
He later found out that Americans do use it differently, but it can still catch the odd UK or Irish person by surprise. Yes, the Queen was indeed lively and committed, so your word does fit. 😚

@@scented-leafpelargonium3366 that's an amazing story @Colin Nevin. You must have been pretty pleased to receive a reply 😀 Actually I'm not an "American" but it doesn't matter. My background gives me the ability to be relaxed and to expect pretty much anything. Such as the case with a term such as "spunk". It's amazing how different terms/words has different/opposite meaning in different countries etc ... and I myself rarely type using any terms that could be taken as an insult etc. If I were to go that route, I would do so in person and not from the protection of a screen (typing back and forth). However, this more often than not is took as a threat or something that it isn't. All I mean is that I usually don't type insults/tasteless comments. I'd prefer to meet up with someone face to face rather than engaging in a back and forth online forum/threads that involves insults/colorful terms etc. ✌️

I'm an American so not familiar with UK's castles & palaces. I heard on another report that after the plane landed in Scotland, they (William, Andrew, Edward, & Sophie) had to drive quite a distance to reach the castle. Why didn't they fly to Balmoral via helicopter instead of wasting an hour traveling by car? Surely the grounds at Balmoral have space for a helicopter (or two) to land safely... no? Perhaps that way they could have reached Her Majesty in time to say goodbye before she passed...

I wonder if she went to take a nap and just never woke up. That would explain the weird “medical supervision” - they were giving Charles and Anne time to get to the bedside before she was pronounced. The Queen strikes me as someone who would have wanted the privacy in death she never had in life.

She died at 2.37pm. At that time the Prince's would have just been departing London so there was no rush when they landed at about 3.50pm. They would have been given the news by then.

EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT IN WITNESSING A LOVED ONE DIE. I COULD NOT LOOK AT MY MOM TAKE HER LAST BREATH. I KNEW SHE WAS GOING, BUT COULD NOT STAY AND LOOK. A YOUNG LADY STAYED AND REGRETTED IT, BECAUSE SHE KEPT SEEING IT IN HER MIND, AND IT AFFECTED HER. BOTTOM LINE...KNOW YOUR LIMIT, AND DON'T FORCE YOURSELF TO FACE THINGS THAT WILL AFFECT YOU IN THE FUTURE!!!

I was in hospice for 9 days hands on with my mom. Everyone is different no way is wrong. For myself I laid my head on her ❤️. I heard her last heartbeat. I was there until her last breath and I don’t regret it for a moment. I was there for my father too. I stayed on the recliner and I heard his last gasp for air.

She said once that she wore the pastels, because people wanted to be able to pick her out in the crowd, and they were the best colours for that. Even her handbag was used as a signal for instance, if she wanted to leave a party, she would hook her bag over her arm in a particular way,so an unobtrusive exit preparation could be made. I wish I could do that with my partner, but he'd never notice!
