I am 14 and love opera. Some my think it is weird for a teenager to adore opera music but I stand to it!!
It is just soooo beautiful
Me too began to an operafan with 14 years, but I was the only one in my school…and probably allready at that time Gay.
@michelle trushell it truly is on an other level than modern music. It has got everything! The music, the characters, comedy all put together in one. Truly an art form to adore, I get you.
I am 14 and I am here because of penthouse
Gurl u got more recommendations
I'm 12 and I always adored metal (opeth, Iron Maiden ect.) and then I began listening to a symphonic metal band called Nightwish and their first singer, Tarja Turunen, was the first opera singer in metal she has sang stuff like O mio babbino caro and many other it started to grab my attention now I'm here.
If you want to check it out I recommend Nightwish Pantom of The Opera ( live end of an era) and Tarja Turunen O mio babbino caro ( live beauty and the beat) or her Ave Maria also stunning.
As a 13 year old, who has been singing opera for 2 years and watching since 4, I think opera is one of most beautiful genres of music in the world.
Have you heard of the migos? Culture 3 to be specific
@@kapambwekapambwe4131 You talking about migos the rapper or something like that? their music sound pretty bad xD.
Everyone is hating on watch jojo. But in Truth they are introducing opera to a younger crowd and that's something opera needs right now.
Yep but it's sad that they are being so limitted in their choices. It's not just Puccini, Verdi and Mozart that wrote operas
@@adolescentomnipresentmutan7849 well they didn't have to do it at all know?

That is true, but a little effort via Google & Wikipedia wouldn't have been amiss. On the other hand, I find listening to newsreaders pronounce foreign words (not to mention plain English) more irritating.

Finally, after all these years, ive finally found what i was looking for, i have been searching the internet for the name of this song for so long, and now i know its name, ”La donna è mobile”
Phantom of the Opera is a musical, it just takes place at an opera :/
Edit: Yes, some songs are operatic in style, but the story itself is not an opera and therefore, doesn't belong on this list. Carmina Burana also doesn't belong on this list. It's a cantata, not an opera.
Yea but the songs are "small opera pieces"
have my like good sir
Take that out put in "Caro Nome" Lily Pons knocks it out of this world.
Yeah well guess what? People sing opera at Operas. There not full opera pieces but they are opera bits.
It's actually a novel that was made into a musical
Queen of the Night should be higher. Its a staple song for opera singers around the world.
I would have to politely disagree. #1 It is specifically an aria for a soprano (female) voice, so not exactly a staple song for opera singers around the world. #2 even just considering the sopranos in opera, the range, breath control, and clarity of pitch that must be done in order for it to sound even decent let alone perfect, is not something every soprano can do. However, it is one of my favorite pieces to listen to and thus I do think it's placement is incorrect.
@@jonathanthorn6615 Yes, and usually a soprano would devote her entire career to the role.
Depends on what level you are at. If I hear one more O Mio Babbino Caro or Quando m’en vo...
Top of the list...
Allynd Sy STAPLE??? It is so freaking high
Narrator: pronounces "Voi che sapete" wrong
Singer : pronounces it right
Narrator : says it wrong again
Singer : am I a jooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
She's not great though.
Imagine if the singer broke the fourth wall just for that
This is quality joking here. 😌👌🏼
He als says Gee a como Puccini
Nessun Dorma is by far one of the best opera songs of all time! Every time I hear it sung I get all choked up and it was also sung by one of the best opera singers of all time.
My favourite? The queen of the night performed by Diana Damrau
Unbeatable tbh
Patricia Petibon is better.
I don't know much about opera, but Damrau as the Queen kills me everytime I listen to her. But I love the first aria of the Queen more.
Imho, she is who this song was meant to be sang by
@@diebereitschaft8963 There's a video on UA-cam either from a rehearsal or an album recording with Patricia Petibon that's mesmerising. She does the crazy eyes and hits those insane high notes and it's my absolute favorite
Phantom of the Opera is NOT an opera, it's a musical. It may have the word Opera in it, but it's just a musical with classical music. Webber would be unimpressed.
you're far too generous in calling it "classical".
MREmusique That's true. Being a fan of Phantom for so long the argument usually settles on classical music.
It takes somebody with an incredible intelligence to be this stupid.
what's the difference between an opera and a musical?
A musical is, basically, pop stuff, wherein the actors speak in normal voices for the most part, and then suddenly burst into song when you least expect it. Plus, they don't sing like opera singers, with their extended ranges. Opera is pretty much all music, with elite musical talent singing things that most people couldn't even consider singing. I mean, it's a whole different world!
O Mio Babbino Caro by Maria Callas is also one of my favorite opera songs, as well as Amira Willighagen, who sung this song as well, both of their voices sound so beautiful. 😍😍❤💕
My favorite version is by Monserrat Caballé. She glides effortlessly into the high note. Callas's version is too rough (for lack of a better word) for me.
Callas is amazing, but I personally think Caballé’s version is the best for me because her voice is “thick” and very rich in that version, which is perfect for the song.
I am here because me and my husband used to go Wien Opera before covid, I think I listened all of these opera’s ( of course with different performer) and so proud with it. Hope covid over again and we can go again
Special thanks to our users Airryuu, 1223unknown and Lalajuicycake for submitting the idea on our Interactive Suggestion Tool at www.WatchMojo.com/suggest
on videos like this it would really help if you would list them even if it's all the candidates in random order so that way I won't have to flip back and forth trying to find out the name of the song, artist, or movie.
Brother the best is the third one
Umm, Carmina Burana shouldn't be on the list. Just because it has lyrics doesn't mean is an Opera.
You are perfectly right, such an error should not happen, it proves how subjective the list is.
they said top songs.. not top opera singers.
It probably would be better if siri pronounced the names
get off your high horse and just enjoy the music loser.
a good start at least would to be calling them arias instead of opera songs....
Why not make a pronunciation video yourself. 👺👺👺👺👺loser
What about Figaro, Barber of Seville?
Le Duc 91 my thoughts as well.
Also "addio del passato" from "la traviata"
Should be number one, Largo al factotum. Probable the most famous aria of all time (Looney Toones wouldn't be the same!), oh ja also insanely difficult for a tenor to sing.
@@hds66nl29 Might as well add Der Ring des Nibelungen. Bugs Bunny in drag is even more iconic.
@@hds66nl29 _"... insanely difficult for a tenor to sing."_
Especially since it's a baritone role.
6:48: Who would recognise Pavarotti without a beard?
I love when mojo gets real classy.
You mean when they TRY
+YoungTheFish - who says "opera songs?"
+KeinenGott Right? Haha.
+KeinenGott IKR?
+KeinenGott I get the point, but I think the video title is meant for people who don't know what an "aria" is, even though this video is not aimed for them.
When I first saw the title of this list I thought that I wouldn't know any of the songs because im not into opera but I recognized most of them. Dang.
+Jaden Smith Yea. A lot of classical songs have been incorporated in our daily lives without realizing it by appearing in a lot of soundtracks.
There not even English 😂😂😂😂
+Jaden Smith That's because a lot of people don't realize how much Opera and Ballet has been cannibalized for movies and pop songs. You most likely know the most popular pieces from Verdi, Mozart aso, from somewhere. (Verdi seems to be particularly popular with advertisers).
Same!
+MoonstonePearl21 Classical music has been used in soundtracks going all the way back to silent movies. I think a lot of people think silent movies were really silent. They at least had a piano or organ and the big theaters even had house orchestras with full scores. If the studio didn't own the score (like the improvised ones used in small theaters) they used public domain music, especially classical, to avoid paying royalties.
Friend: What’s your religion?
Me: Carmina Burana
Queen of the Night's Aria only ranks at #9? Are you insane?
Stoney Sauce and Diana Damrau deserves more credit.
and how dare he puts phantom of the opera in the intro
@@marcxs3537 seriously!!
The Queen of the Night has two arias and her first one is much better than the second more popular one
Fun fact: the soprano across from Pavarotti is Cynthia Lawrence. She teaches at my school, and she's amazing. I loved doing master class with her.
Diana Damrau's coloratura in the Queen of the Night Aria was perfect.
Karl Braun She is a queen! Each time she performs the aria, Wolfgang is remembered for the genius he was.
She’s done it better… but no one else has.
"The Phantom of the Opera" is a Musical, not an Opera!
Patrick Meisinger eh
@Patrick Meisinger. Neither is Carmina Burana.
Its and Operetta which is a cross between Musical and Opera. It has the music style from and opera and is supposed to be sung with opera technique and has speaking parts in it.
@@Annija_Dziesma_T_official That term would be suitable for Die Fledermaus, The Merry Widow and the Gilbert & Sullivan pieces.
@@yipengli1072 even compared to those it would still be considered an operetta.
4:29 Mozart was late to the performance of his own opera?? Inexcusable!

+WatchMojo.com Dear People on WatchMojo.com, the list is partially inaccurate. It is also pretty disrespectful that the narrator can't even pronounce correctly the names of the arias, operas or composers. also, do some better research, great effort on trying to bring pop culture references, but there are great versions out there with real great singers for some of the examples. Please note that "O Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi" from Carl Orff Carmina Burana is NOT an aria NOR Carmina Burana is an Opera; same as "The Music of the Night" from the Phantom of the opera by Andrew Lloyd Weber is a Musical Theater piece, the fact that says opera doesnt make it one. And Last, but not least, opera singer NEVER belt... What a disappointment on this one... I used to watch your lists and liked them, even recommended your videos and used them as educational tools, after this huge fiasco, I thing I shall pass and move on.
+Juan Felipe Mansilla B. I agree. I can pass the italian pronunciation, and the presence of the phantom of the opera, but the Carmina Burana, how can someone think that is an opera?
+Juan Felipe Mansilla B. I rarely comment on any video on UA-cam but after watching this I decided I had to say something. Then I realized you had written exactly what I was going to. Thank you.
Do a k pop video please!!!!!
+Juan Felipe Mansilla B. Agreed about everything. This list is ridiculous and makes no sense and his pronunciation of "voi che sapete" is bordering on offensive.
The Phantom of the Opera is not an opera! It is a broadway musical. I'm surprised that the Catalog aria from Mozart's Don Giovanni wasn't on this list or the famous aria from Vivaldi's Griselda
Ssme with Carmina Burana, it's not an Opera.
Future Life Sounds Carmina Burana is an oratorio
Kiara Eijo Yes i know. Both of them should not be on the list.
supergamer88188 b
Why is Phantom not an opera? Because its in English and not French, German, or Italian? I HATE Phantom, but it is an opera. Both opera and musical (musical theatre) have definitions, and Phantom is definitely not a musical.

Carmina Burana is a scenic cantata and Phantom of the Opera is a musical
Both are piles of musical excrement.
Watch Mojo keep messing up their lists. Why is there no pieces from the Barber of Seville, such as Figaro?? I hate when they leave obvious candidates out or mess up stuff.
Oui! Una voce poco fa maybe? And yes, Figaro!
I honestly thought Figaro was going to be number 1 and Carmen was an honorable mention lol
Agreed! Although I thought Carmen would get a 3 or 4 spot instead of honourable mentions
+Jazmin Torres Carmen is number one, not honorable mention
And they put something like Carmina Burana, which is not even an Opera.
"a composition by the late mozart..." um, aren't they *all* "late" at this point?

Okay, I love *Phantom of the Opera*. I think it's one of the greatest musicals ever composed. But did they really just put it on the same category as...actual operas?
Sad!
Amelia Doubleyou lol exactly my thoughts
it is by definition an opera. Nothing says an opera has to have classical music or be in Italian.
It is not an opera. It's a musical. This video was embarrassing. Surely watchmojo could have hired someone who actually knew what good opera is. Little girls shouldn't be singing it. Also, they should have found somebody on their staff that could have actually pronounced the names right. Ugh.
I want to like the comment but It has 69 likes and I don't know what to do...
PJ Vanity it is by definition, not an opera
Good to see O Mio Babbino Caro taking fourth place in the Top 10 Opera Songs, and even better that one of the examples of the singers was Amira Willighagen with Andre Rieu (the only child featured in the list). Well done, Amira!

correct!
It's art
Everyone is so upset, and I get it. But this is why opera music isn't as big as it should be. You turn it into some sort of exclusive club and make fun of the people who aren't as educated as you are. Just be thankful that someone took the time out of their day to try. They put forth effort to talk about a beautiful art form and most of you just shit on them. Get off your high horses and let us all celebrate that someone tried. That's the important part.
My thoughts exactly
i agree, just correct the author, its much better than bullying
Jacy G the person narrating, teaching about opera ought to be able to pronounce/talk about them. This isn’t rocket science. The Spanish or French teacher in your high school must know their stuff, so should someone narrating about opera. When the target audience knows more than the teacher, then the teacher isn’t very good.
yes ok but it's funny when he says o mio bambino caro LOL
True true. No wonder opera music is drowning and drowning these days. In my town, opera used to be a big hit. But since the fans are toxic (elitist and such) the viewers has dwindled. Early this year, there were only 100+ people bought the tickets unlike the previous 1000-2000+ audience.
I love the Phantom of the Opera, as well as Amira Willighagen, Elina Garanca, Anna Netrebko, Andrea Bocelli, Diana Damrau, Joyce DiDonato, Luciano Pavarotti, Roberto Alagna, and Anna Caterina Antonacci. I also love Habanera from Carmen, it is one of my favorite opera songs. 😍😍❤💕😊 I also love André Rieu.
Thanks for uploading all of your videos!
the "O Mio Babbino Caro" gets me all teary eyed every damn time, and I don't even have a daughter, let alone a child -_-
The narrator's attempts to pronounce the Italian names are atrocious.
Filomatia the german was so cringe too
@Filomatia he loused up at least 80% of all non-English words and names. Sickening.
I hate to add to the pot, but his poor pronunciation is an assault on the art form! In another list regarding Opera he pronounced “Montserrat Caballé” by actually pronouncing the double “ll” sound instead of the proper “y” sound.
not only that, he actually mispronounces "younger" @ 8:06
Filomatia too true!!!!!!
I prefer Nessum Dorma before Habanera but I'm OK with this

Thank you for uploading a clip, listing many famous operas to a younger crowd. Really appreciate it. 😊
Amongst honourable mentions came the musical "Phantom of the Opera", in my opinion it is a musical with some opera characteristics but wouldn't sort it to opera.
What I thought is at least mention worthy is Gounod's Faust. (My favorite song is "Le veau d'or est toujour debout" sung by Mephisto in baritone.)

I agree with every one of your selections. Now I need to go put them on my play list
The number one was the one that I was thinking of!! I never knew it’s name but everyone has heard that aria. Beautiful!
Carmina Burana shouldn't be on the list. Just because it has lyrics doesn't mean it's an Opera.
The Spirit of Orchestral Music I agree. Nice channel btw.
This is the most ignorant. foolish thing I've witnessed on UA-cam.
@bravaLiz Are you referring to the comment or the entry?
Carmina Burana is not opera, I agree with you
I am referring to both the entry AND comment. Carmina Burana is a work by Orff in & of itself. It requires a combination of chorus, soloists, dancers & of course, the music. However, it is NOT OPERA as we know it.I first performed this on a scholarship, with pro orchestra, soloists, conductor & ballet when I was only 16 years old. Long story. I do not wish to bore you with details of my own career. However I choose to lead a quiet life & not plaster my work all over internet. The Deutschgrammophon recording of this featuring Fischer-Dieskau Gundula Janowitz et. al. is extraordinary.
YES!!!! I am overjoyed that habenera placed number one on this list! One of the greatest works of art of all time!!!
Ì found an appreciation for opera in my 40s. The talent, dedication and obedience required to practice the art leaves me awestruck with those who perform this medium.
I’m happy that the Duo des Fleurs/Dôme Épais from Lakmé was included, but I am extremely disappointed that Song to the Moon by Dvorak wasn’t included. Many consider it to be one of the most beautiful Arias ever written, and it is very vocally challenging (although not as much as the Queen of the Night, of course).
Carmina Burana IS NOT AN OPERA, AND PHANTOM OF THE OPERA IS NOT AN OPERA SIMPLY BECAUSE IT HAS "OPERA" IN IT. Also, never give more screen time to Aretha Franklin assaulting Nessun Dorma than Pavarotti. That's not ok
pavarotti appointes aretha to sing nessun dorma

I'm Okay with Lady Soul under the circumstances. And it is an interesting story. Your first points are right on the nose.
Bocelli uses "classical," "art," "bel canto" techniques. Their premise did not require the clips be of opera performances. And in THAT they succeed. André Rieu? NOT an opera conductor. Seems okay on Burana, but that's not even an opera.
yeah, if they take these 2 songs into this selection, they could have also put o solé mio to #1

Pavarotti don´t make them "famous"
And Lanza don´t song Nessun Dorma years before Pavarotti btw

Please excuse the correction; a "song" in opera is known as an "aria". What a lovely selection of arias in this video. There is so much wonderful music in opera and the internet has made opera so much more accessible. I really wish people can take time to explore this wonderful art from even more!
Amo la musica clasica, gracias por el recuento, lo disfrute. Amira Willighagen es fantastica.
I love classical music, thanks for the count, enjoy it. Amira Willighagen is fantastic.
The "Flower song" duet from Lakme is sung by a soprano and a mezzo-soprano, not two sopranos. It's gutsy to present the top ten arias and ensembles from the world of opera. It hope it helps make opera more popular. In the old days of opera, it wasn't unusual for the audience to throw vegetables, usually tomatoes at singers they didn't like.
I'm so glad they're doing a list like this. It's a shame that classical music isn't as popular as it used to be. People are really missing out. I'm not the crazy about the song chosen for the number 1 spot. I think the others on the list were better than that. You should do a video about the best classical instrumentals. Cannon in D should definitely be in there if not the top one. It just never gets old.

His German accent was also horrible. But the fact that he didn't have this problem in his French pronunciation makes it unacceptable. Why put so much effort only on French but butcher all others? Especially Italian, that was just atrocious. It doesn't cost anything to look at the pronunciation before making the video.
Karen G. Probably because Watchmojo are Canadian so they are used a little to French
That's not an excuse, with a little practice he could have done better, Italian or not.
go talk german we like a good laugh
My favourite is Vesti la giubba from Pagliacci. That songs moves my heart everytime.
Despite the flaws of this video, it's a pretty good list overall. I would have included "Un bel di vedremo" from Madama Butterfly, and I would say "Che Gelida Manina" is my favourite song from La Boheme. For the people saying that "Queen of the night" should be higher, I would say that although it's an exceptionally technical piece of music to sing, that doesn't automatically make it the best.
Really??? NO WAGNER?!?!?!?!
+gocubs1815 Wagner is A great if not THE great opera composer... but not know for his arias.
+Benjamin Burlingame + 1
For real!!! They put ride of the Valkyries as top 10 classical pieces ever written but doesn't even shown on this list at all!
+Je Javier That's not an aria.
+Emiliano Zapata oh my god my bad I skipped out on the intro and only watched the top 10, I just hate this guys voice lol
I feel that queen of the night should be higher in the list,at least a 4
I clicked on this hoping to find the name of song number 5. So thank you!
1 place must be aria Cavaradossi from Tosca - E lucevan le stelle! Puccini
Isn't that Mario's aria? I think Cavaradossi is dead by then :-)
@@paslowcb 🤔 this is an aria and any singers can sing it, but in the opera the role of Cavaradossi and it is his aria.
Where is "Time to Say Goodbye"?
exactly! where is it!??
IKR my favorite
+Saylem Olberg It's not from an opera, so doesn't really have a place in this list!
+Saylem Olberg That's not opera.
+Saylem Olberg It's not an opera, so it doesn't belong here. It's operatic pop, not opera. There's a difference.
phantom pf the opera? and not Casta Diva? no Celeste Aida? no Liebestod? no 'Je veux vivre? no 'O non credeo mirarti? no 'la mamma morta? not even sempre libera? no 'Io son l'umile ancella? no 'e lucevan le stelle? no vissi d'arti?
No "El pizza lasagné duvét de la croissant le fromage ún bambíno?" For fucking shame, watchmojo.
"Les oiseaux dans la charmille", "Madamina, il catalogo è questo", "Una furtiva lagrima", "Vedi le fosche notturne spoglie", "Ah mes amis!", "Là pugnai, la sorte arrise", "La calunnia è un venticello", "Va' pensiero" for fuck's sake!
All these give me goose bumps man
i would say queen of the night's aria should be the first on this list
