For this list, we’re taking a look at those singers whose musical work almost completely subsists of this dramatic musical art form. So as powerful of Andrea Bocelli’s voice is, he will not be considered for this list.

Hey, you're doing a top ten list...low voices not allowed....
Lists like this remind me of Puccini. Great singers, beautiful music, and if you're a low voice you get only a crumb or two...should've been a tenor or soprano...
I wouldn't have put Callas at #1. I would have ranked Joan Sutherland there, no disrespect to Callas. I also probably would have put Carreras in honorable mention. They didn't even mention Corelli, let alone Melchior or a lot of other old-school tenors. Birgit Nielsen is conspicuously absent too. Marylyn Horne should have got honorable mention at least, except she's too low to be considered I guess...George London is one of my favorite singers of all time; never even mentioned him, let alone truly great singers like Hines, Ghiarov, Plishka, Talvela, etc

I worked for the Detroit Opera in the mid-80s where I got to interact with Pavarotti on the occasions he was performing in Detroit. He was a very jovial, light spirited man who made everyone around him laugh. I was also fortunate enough to be seated center stage at his performances. Even if you had no appreciation for an operatic voice, listening to him do his thing would make you understand why many consider him the man. RIP, sir.

@@christophernavarro3551 My uncle played cello for the NYMet for some 40 years. My first introduction to live opera occurred when Pavarotti was on his first tour of the US and at Atlanta's "Fabulous Fox Theater" where I sat curled up in the outer edge of the open front curtain with the then manager Francis Robinson sitting along side on a low golf chair, with the orchestra and audience behind us and the performance just feet away before us. When, on Opening Night, Pavarotti hit High Five Cs in a row, the electricity in the air literally straightened the spine. Also, during the Saturday Matinée finalizing that week, I sat front row center in the audience, this time with Francis Robinson occasionally visiting and sitting in a reserved seat alongside (to explain what was going on and what especially to look forward to), we watched Joan Sutherland. A few minutes before her performance of the "Mad Scene" was over, the packed house interrupted with a solid five minutes of thunderous applause. After she resumed the aria and finished, there were eighteen curtain calls before a standing ovation that lasted over twenty minutes. Richard Tucker, who had already did his highlight aria, knew he had to do the very best of his career after that performance and, with his last aria, did garnering a six minute standing ovation for himself. After that week of opera was over, my uncle said I was very fortunate to have experienced Pavarotti and Sutherland. My favorite night at the opera however? Pavarotti and Freni. Why? I had the most beautiful gal backstage during the performance of Madame Butterly with me. A gal who had thought "opera was no good." And couldn't turn off the open faucet her eyes became during the Falling Cherry Blossom Scene. After that one, we went to an Italian restaurant and swam in the lasagne. And, of course, Asti Spumante'; and....

The level of vocal thecnique and mastery she imployed on those murderous roles is still unrepated. The woman sang the impossible to put it in simple words. And Her Normas, Medeas, Violettas are the greatest interpretations of any opera role by anyone. The amount of artisitc gifts that woman possesed is simply unbelievable and greatly unffair for other singers.

Waiting and waiting for Ryan Speedo Greens voice to mature in to what we all hope it becomes. Maria Callas as number 1 is no surprise given the fact that after 40 years after her death, she is still the best selling opera singer year after year. Not to mention she changed opera forever, hence its said that opera is divided before and after Maria Callas given her unparalled influence and unmatched artistry and musicianship. Her legend influenced and still influences actors, singers, painters, directors, conductors and a bunch more artists in the most varied fields. A feat only achieved by her and noneelse in opera. A thousand years will pass and She will reign supreme as the greatest soprano of all time, hence her work surpassed the opera world itself to reach places that no other opera singer could.

I wouldn’t putt Carreras at #4, and where is Corelli? The media has blinded Americans and told them that these people are amazing when they are mediocre at best. I’ve studied voice in college for over a decade and will have my doctorate next year. Firstly, I know to choose the top ten tenors and sopranos of all time is something impossible. (This is a soprano/tenor list only.) GRANTED. Perhaps should never be attempted? But in all good sport, here it is. With respect to Pavarotti and the other top choices,.... internationally across the board of all expert opinions, Bjorling has ALWAYS come out on top ALWAYS, of all time tenors,. CARUSO second, Wunderlich, despite his short career always ranks top five, so is CORELLI, LANZA, GIGLI,...these tenors CHANGED opera. VICKERS,, Wagner aside, his OTELLO DON JOSE, PETER GRIMES, etc,...... OMG. one for the Ages, from 1957-1988!! KIEPURA, MC CORMACK, SCHIPA, TUCKER,..voices never matched again in time! SOPRANOS! PRICE! TEBALDI CABALLE! NILSON, SUTHERLAND, FRENI, SILLS, immortal voices! IMPOSSIBLE TO DO! BE GRACIOUS! BUT STILL I SAY!

The most amazing (and beautiful) opera voice of the last 100 years was Giuseppe di Stefano. Perhaps you haven't heard of him. Listen to his 1940s and early 1950s recordings. He often partnered (and out shone) Callas.

Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovski, Algerian Amel Brahim-Djelloul, and Japanese soprano Yumiko Samejima are others worthy of honorable mention. If you keep an open mind and listen to Michael Bolton's "The Arias, My Secret Passions" You may be pleasantly surprised. Canadian Gino Vannelli's album "Canto" is also fantastic. Gino sings in French, Italian, Spanish and English. While technically not "Opera" songs, they have all the trappings of Opera. His timbre and range in his song "Dea Speranza" (Italian for Goddess of Hope) is breathtaking, I cried when I heard the song.

No matter who makes top, it will always be subjective cause everyone has their own taste in voices. Some like more lyrical tones, others - dramatic, some like expressive emotions, others - lighter ones etc.
I like top in general. It's great, if this top helped someone to discover opera singers.

  • @HumbleHarry

Problem is, there is no universal criteria for determining who is the best of anything. Not all who listen to these undeniably great singers share the same level of education in this musical art form which, in itself, doesn't even matter as taste is a very personal thing. I love Maria Callas because her voice is personally exciting to me. But I also have to respect that others find the veiled quality of her voice personally unpleasant. Fortunately, Tebaldi, Sutherland, Sills and others existed for them.

Any one of them could have replaced Renee Fleming. Nothing against her, but this list is too much skewed toward popular, contemporary figures to the detriments of true legends. I'm a huge Carreras fan, but to put him in the top five and leave Corelli off the list entirely is a travesty.

    • @wilsonwatt9283

What kind of idiot are you. Celine Dion is a great pop singer but has absolutely no abilities that would suit her to opera nor has she ever attepted to sing anything from an opera. Great singers in each area of vocal music are great because they understand how to use their voices properly to serve that genre of music. Very, very few singers can sing in multiple genres and do it well. No one is downgrading Celine Dion's great voice and power as a pop singer by not including her in a list of opera singers. Only people like you who have no real understanding or appreciation of the distinctions in types of voices and genres of music would make such a foolish statement.
