      I now use the Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 34", and it blows both of these out of the water. This is my favorite monitor I've ever used! I also had the Alienware AW3423, but the Samsung wins over that one hands down.

    26th subscriber here. This is exactly what I wanted to see...yesterday :( I just ordered the Dell, but the U3419W, is a more expensive version with USB-C, maybe is better. I avoided any panel that wasn't IPS, now I am confused. One thing I learned is...I like the dual ultrawide set up :D

    •  3 роки тому

      Should I keep the Dell? :(

    • @EverythingPractical
      @EverythingPractical  3 роки тому +1

      Aye yai yai, that's exacty why I made this video...lol
      I saw so many amazing videos of the dell and IPS panels and why I also went dell initially but when I had one, I hated it. I wanted and needed the deeper blacks from the VA panel that the IPS panel just doesn't give you. This is of course regardless of the viewing angle because you'll most likely be front and center 99% of the time. If not, then you'll notice little difference between the two.
      Anyways, try it out, maybe it meets your needs, and if not, go VA panel and the Samsung is really a nice monitor :)

  • @smpdigital
    @smpdigital 3 роки тому +27

    You've made a very detailed review for not doing your reasearch well, the Samsung is a VA panel, while the Dell is an IPS (any other letter attached like "AH" or "S" is just a marketing trickery), none of them are TN lol. That being said, choosing one over the other depends on what you'll use it for. VA (samsung) panels are cheaper to manufacture, provide better (blacker) blacks and colors appear more saturated, also, faster response times and clock speeds BUT, they'll never reproduce accurate colors, i'e. the orange you see on one side of the panel, will never be the same orange that is supposed to be on the other side, furthermore viewing angles would switch color perception, unacceptable for content creation, design, art or any other color-critical activity. So choosing one or the other is easy: if you are a gamer or use it for casual browsing, non-color-critical activites like coding, spreadsheets, writing, etc.. get the Samsung, but if you're creating content, graphics, video, desktop printing, design, get the Dell, or any other IPS panel.

    • @EverythingPractical
      @EverythingPractical  3 роки тому +5

      Hi smpdigital, you are correct that the dell panel is IPS, I made a mistake in the video but this is correct in the description. I used both the Dell and Samsung extensively and the Dell was clearly the poorer performer. The Samsung panel was visibly better.
      If you are a content creator, like me, you sit directly in front of the screen so the viewing angle doesn't really matter ;) and from where I sit, the Samsung looked much, much better. I tried many things to get the Dell to perform to my liking but it never got there. The Samsung was perfect out of the box. Anyways, depending on your monitor settings, that are very limited with the Dell, as seen in the video, the picture can look completely different. I used standard settings in the video as most people would use the monitor. The Samsung looked better, perhaps the colors are not exact on the video-due keep that in mind.
      Lastly, this is not a review between IPS and VA panels, but between these specific Dell and Samsung monitors. Between the 2, the Samsung is the monitor I recommend and I am very satisfied with it's performance. I was very disappointed with the Dell performance and it's IPS panel. I also would not recommend IPS panels to content creators due to very poor black performance - which leads to poor contrast and inaccurate pictures.
      Have you used both side by side or any VA and IPS next to each other? If so, was your experience different than mine? Or, do you use either one of these and have different experience? Would love to hear your feedback :)

    I've personally used both, and my vote goes to the Dell U3419W for maximum productivity - you have more inputs, and essentially the Dell can be used as a central hub if you have multiple devices. the 90W USB PD is definitely awesome for one cable solution, paired with the color calibrated AH-IPS panels, it's definitely learning more towards productivity.
    IPS panels are color accurate, but they are slower in terms of refresh rates - unless you want to shell out the extra dough on those Nano-IPS one's from LG which are awesome (I own one of those for my gaming rig). But overall, it's up to your personal preference :)
    On a side note, this is a good comparison, keep up the good work! cheers.

    I have both these monitors. I use the Dell at work and Samsung at home. Just one correction. The MacBooks work great with both the Dell and Samsung using USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 and both charge the laptop. I also use the Samsung with a Windows desktop over DisplayPort and it does a good job with gaming. Speakers are disappointing on both, I use separate external speakers / headphones instead. I probably prefer the Samsung overall, I just wish it looked a bit nicer. It looks a bit cheap and plastic. I’ve always preferred one monitor over dual monitor set ups, so this is ideal for me. I used to have one 27 inch 16:9 and this definitely gives me more productivity

    Hi Anthony, thanks for the review, very well made. I had a couple of questions in case you got to test the Samsung with a macbook:
    1- when you connect your macbook to the monitor and go to display--> preferences, and click scaled, do you see the familiar interface and options for scaling like what you'd see for the macbook screen itself, i.e.: "Larger text (looks like 1920*1080)", or do you just see a lot of resolutions laid out in a list?
    2- When you connect a windows PC to the monitor, do you feel the colors look way better with the windows than with the mac ? I had a similar experience with the older version (c34f791)

    I already had a Dell U3417W so I bought the U3419W when I decided to upgrade my small second monitor so they matched. I have to say, using the U3417W for years and it worked fine on it's own...but pairing it with a second one and wanting to use all the features they offer, like connecting 1 keyboard and mouse set to 2 PCs and swapping between them with the screen input swap, it simply doesn't work well. The keyboard will frequently not swap the connection to the other PC and the only way to get it to work is by cycling the power of the monitor...Pair that with the issue of windows, by design, collapsing all windows to the active monitor when you cycle the power and these monitors are a nightmare. You end up having to swap inputs again just to fix all your windows, then swap back to the computer you intended to switch to in the first place. For the price you pay for them, they aren't worth it. They look great, but the additional features you pay for are very hit or miss every time you go to use them. It's incredibly frustrating as I now feel stuck with them.
    Also, the speakers on the U3417W sound pretty good, but they are absolute trash on the newer 19W model.

    Thanks for the video! I was a bit confused when you said the Dell did not support use with a MacBook. It was my understanding that a USB-c port could be used to supply power to and display a MacBooks screen, even if the MacBook uses Thunderbolt 3 - I’d appreciate if you could help me understand the difference between usb-c and thunderbolt 3? Thanks :)

    • @EverythingPractical
      @EverythingPractical  3 роки тому +1

      Hello and thanks for the comment.
      UBS-C is the connector type, thunderbolt 3 is the tech or version of USB-C. Thunderbolt 3 will allow power transfer up to 100 W and data transfer up to 40 GB/s. Lower grades offer power transfer of only 5 W which only powers small devices, cell phones and tablets for example.
      I do not have a max product to test, but I may have misunderstood issue before with macs as mac users were reporting having issues connecting via the USB-C port.
      It is important that you use the thunderbolt 3 port on your computer and a thunderbolt 3 cable, connected to the correct monitor port for this system combination to work properly.
      Let me know if this is the route you take and if it is indeed successful. Also, if you are happy with the monitor in the end :)

      Just as info for you, to have 2x 16:9, you would need a 49" monitor, which has the aspect ratio of 32:9. But to your question, this could heavily depends on your 16:9 monitor size.
      These 34" monitors give quite a lot of real-estate to work with. I easily work with this one 34" monitor as compared to my previous 2 x 21" 16:9 monitor setup. I dont notice much of a difference, to be honest and there is plenty of space for multiple windows.
      However, if you are looking for duel 16:9 output, I'm not certain for how this would work with 1 monitor (except if the 49" monitor allows this ser up)

    I have a question , It may sound stupid. Films and videos usually have a framerate from 25 to 60.
    So it does not matter if u are watching a movie if u use a 60 or 100hz monitor. The 100hz refreshrate is just for scrolling through stuff at your Desktop. Could it be that those glitches just happen because you force the framerate to go up on a movie wich just has 25 fps? If the Samsungs normal settings are in 100hz it won’t force the movie to go up , it just shows the 25fps.
    Or is there a difference between hz and fps

    • @EverythingPractical
      @EverythingPractical  2 роки тому +1

      This certainly isnt a stupid question, it's quite technical actually and can be difficult to wrap your head around. I'll try my best to explain but other articles/videos will help you out also.
      Refresh rate and frame rate arent the same thing.
      The refresh rate is the amount of times per second that the picture updates on a screen (refreshes). This is pretty much the response time the monitor has. For example, if you had a monitor that had a refresh rate of 1 second, the screen wouldn't change but every second. This would make it extremely difficult do anything. If you moved your pointer across the screen, you would only see it's position change every 1 second. Take this example and scale it and maybe you can start to understand why having a high refresh rate is nice.
      Frame rate, on the other hand, is related to video and camera capture. 1 picture is 1 frame. In the world of videography, individual frames are stitched together to make a video. The frame rate is how many "pictures" are taken per second to make a video. The old movie reels were just this. Now it is maily digital. It has been determined that a frame rate of 25 fps looks most natural to the human eye, that is why movies are presented in this frame rate. Higher frame rates show more detail, thus taking away motion blur that is natural for us to see. This is why a soap opera effect is strange, because the higher frame rate (typically 60 fps) and little to no motion blur.
      If you have a film with a frame rate of 240 fps (frames per second) but a monitor with a refresh rate of 60 Hz, you will have a mismatch and you will miss data being sent to the screen (like moving your mouse and a refresh rate of only 1 second), but you wont notice this because we cant see that much information being displayed in that time anyways. The digital files would be sending 240 pictures in 1 second, but the screen would only display 60 of those pictures in 1 second since that is how often it is updating the display for you to see it.
      Frames per second is how many "pictures" were taken in 1 second and if you play this on a monitor, 1 second is still only 1 second. However, since there are so many pictures at high frame rates, what people do is expand that 1 second clip, to say 5 seconds. This is how super slow motion video is possible because you break down time in to tiny tiny moments (frames) and then show them over a long period of time-but the signal transfer is constant and your screen updating this signal 60 times a second (if your screen is a 60 Hz screen) for you to see.
      Since video is typically and best at 25 fps, without clipping, you can slow down a video that was shot at 100 fps four times to have a frame rate of 25 fps. In that example if you took a 1 second video at 100 fps, you will now have a 4 second video. If you slow down the play back further and further, it will look choppy and look like a flip book, showing the individual frame (pictures). That is why a high fps in cameras is nice because you can slow down the footage and not miss any details of what happened running at a very smooth playback. Typically 240 fps and up is preferable for this. But the screen is updating the image every 60 seconds.
      This is also why if you take a slow motion video of a monitor, you see it going dark, this is the screen updating its picture, ie - refreshing.
      Maybe this helps a little?
