Dizzy Dials consistently sell for 6 coins each across all shops, but Dried Shrooms sell for 4 coins at the Twilight Shop, instead of 1 like they do everywhere else. Thanks very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. You're right about the microphone - I was using an older one when I made my first few videos, but I've since upgraded it, so the audio in my newest video is much better!
This is... Very similar to how I ended up playing the game as a kid. I've always been the kind to needlessly complicate things by not using inns, not buying items, rarely using items, things like that. So while it wasn't completely coinless (I did use heal blocks a bit and may have bought some badges), just by my normal playstyle I dealt with a lot of these issues.
Flurrie's Gale Force is an excellent move, but I'm surprised to not see Lip Lock show up at all. An HP-draining move coupled with Flurrie's relatively high HP stat seems like it'd be great for tanking, especially since it pierces defense. I guess Charge + Multibonk (or yoshi's moves) are just that good.
I love challenge runs for this game. Another great one is BP only (at least up to level 33), or pacifist Mario where he cannot do damage. You can do a "danger Mario" run with several glitches. You can skip ahead and get Bobbery after Yoshi joins, then visit the guy to reduce your max HP to 5, and then revert the story back to ch 2.
This is my all-time favorite game so I was happy to see that it was on your channel after I watched your super mario sunshine one. Your comments and editing are so damn funny but also insightful. It would have been hilarious if you used your coins instead of your inn coupon at the end but that was very satisfying watching you use it.
Gale Force is (generally) more effective against flying/floating enemies, and also increases in strength as you get further in the game. (I think it's based on Mario's level, but it might be Chapter.) It's very underrated.
This is a real cool video, glad I came across it in my reccommendations. Some thoughts after watching to the end: - Cortez's weapons in the final phase normally come back any time they are defeated, but Flurrie's Gale Force can take them off the board permanently. Your strategy is one I don't see often but it seems to work just as well. - The Goldbomb "all your coins" request can actually turn this into a far more intense playthough if you incorporate it into your plans. If you've got a deathwish, you can take that into consideration by minimizing all coin gains before that point (I.e. no unnecessary battles, meaning no extra levels, until AFTER that moment). That'd be an interesting but devastating twist... - As everyone's said the chapter into gag is great, thank you for that
The intro was honestly a rollercoaster. "Oh he's gonna lose at Zest T .. wait losing count as a lose? Damn you can't complete the prologue! Oh, it doesn't count if it's mandatory. ... Does the Gritzville forced lose count?"
When I did playthru's of Paper Mario TTYD I always followed several rules. 1 always fill out the tattle log. 2 Power Bounce, Mega Rush and any other OHKO or overpowered strategies are banned. 3 I use my first 2 upgrades on BP and get the Quick Change badge from Dazzle before entering Hooktail Castle. And partners fainting is a game over like if it was Mario... 4 optional don't spam superguards to win battles. Honestly it's really fun to play Paper Mario TTYD that way!
this was a cool challenge, I think the main reason it's fun to see someone complete a game with certain restrictions is that it almost always seems to result in the player trying out different strategies or means that you wouldn't normally use if you were playing the game normally. I've sort of wanted to replay this game since I haven't played it in forever. and when I do I'm kind of curious to see what your coin expenditure would be normally.
the video is a year old by now but I'd like to point out the unique nature of Doopliss' final fight in the steeple. The way Vivian enters that battle is unique and is only ever done in this one battle, she occupies a 2nd partner slot which means if you had used glitches or cheats to have your normal partners there, they would be in the battle(and the badges would actually work) and vivian would still join you and appear over the active partner. Since she occupies the invisible 2nd slot badges don't work since all of the badges are coded only to work on partner slot 1 which remains empty since mario's party is coded to be empty at this stage of the game. It makes sense to do it this way though
That sounds cool! Do you have a link to more information on this? I've gotten a few comments about that battle, but they said that the partner badges were disabled because they'd apply to your partners on Doopliss's side.
@@MandatoryPixelThe answer is in the comment section of the video "Odd things about Doopliss" by Koop. Koop mentions this glitch in his video, and Jdaster64 elaborates in the comment section. The game runs a check at the start of each battle to apply badge effects to Mario and his partners. However, since the battle starts without Vivian, the game doesn't apply any badge effects to her. The programmers forgot to run the check again once Vivian enters the battle, so she ends up without the badge effects. This isn't related to Mario's partners being your enemies, because badges such as Simplifier or Unsimplifier also don't apply to Vivian's action commands (but they work with Mario's). It's not just the Partner badges being affected, it's all badge effects related to Vivian herself.
Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! It probably won't be the next video I do, but I'm planning to eventually do this same challenge for the original Paper Mario as well. i'm surprised you didn't use quake hammer on Koopinator. it trivializes him and you get it for free in boggly woods. it also wrecks clefts. good use of Flurrie, by the way. I think a lot of ppl ignore gale force because they think it works like fright masks or parakarry's air lift and thus steals your star points, but it's a really good move. the this and that interlude joke was very funny to me, i don't know why, but you split my sides with that.
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Regarding Quake Hammer, it's just not a move I use very often in my playthroughs, so I didn't think to use it there!
Actually in Pokemon if you do not have enough money and try to enter the safari zone multiple times, the guy will let you in with just 1 safari ball (in Pokemon yellow, fire red and leaf green, it won't work in red and blue)
You can bypass Zess T. with the hazard respawn glitch in the sewers’ fast travel rooms, but you’d have to use the glitch every time you have to go to West Rogueport until you get the Ultra Hammer to remove the concrete block. And by necessity, every attempt of the hazard respawn glitch will cost one HP. Also, you can make phase 3 of Cortez much easier by using Flurry’s Gale Force to completely remove the weapons from battle.
13:52 Rawk Hawk is the title holder while just beneath is Koopanater at Rank 1. Pokkén Tournament does something similar as the League Masters are also above rank 1 in their respective leagues. Except for last league, debatably.
If I remember right. Rankings in leagues are usually determined by your ability to challenge and defeat the Champion. So a #1 position represents a fighter being the modt likely to win a match against the Champion.
14:44 he has a second phase, but charge power bounce can deal so much damage with enough time that you can just completely skip it. I only remembered he had a second phase when watching another person play it.
koopinator isnt ranked 1 in the normal sense, hes ranked 1 among challengers for the belt, as in he has highest priority for challenging Hawk for the belt, hence why if u lose to hawk, u have to fight koopinator to regain ur right to fight hawk.
Here's a challenge, go through the game without using any of the good badges, only the shitty ones, and you min-max your BP, don't level up any other stat until after your BP is topped off. Also, no item shops (badge shops and casinos are okay though), no deliberate grinding, and some kind of limitation on how much you can use special moves.
im a real stickler for items anyway. so this is pretty much how i play the game as is. the lack of heal blocks would make it a bit harder but obviously i would just swap to using small fry battles to heal up. i hate using items and i always get to the point where im storing my money as gold bars anyway.

Is there a rule against using badges like Mega Rush P or Quake Hammer? I found the latter strange seeing you struggle at Koopinator and using Gale Force on the Bristles. And that badge is Chapter 2.
Nope, there were no rules beyond the ones I said at the start. Honestly, I don't normally use Quake Hammer in my playthroughs, so it didn't occur to me to use it!
I think the route would end up revolving around Lumpy - get 300 coins to give him by whatever means necessary, then skip to the end of the game and collect your 999 coin payoff.
In theory could you save on the coins lost at the beginning of the game with the bandit? They steal half your coins and if you spend a small amount of course that half would be reduced
Well done challenge and video! I did a similar challenge (PM TTYD no healing / no buying from shops except for badges). Obviously couldn’t buy badges in this challenge but the main strategy used for healing throughout the game was the badge “sleepy Stomp” which you can get in the pit of 100 trials. For a mere 2 FP you could put an enemy to sleep for 5 turns and then heal up with sweet treat. The next major strat that helped was Ms Mowz and her “hidden ability”. In the game even if the enemy isn’t “holding” an item and you use kiss thief you can still grab things. It’s a set chance per enemy on what they hold. Enemies in the rouge port sewers hold power rush badges (Koopa troopa family / shady koopas) and after a few of them you unlock danger Mario with +10 attack and there’s no need to really set up charges anymore. Personally also put on flower saver so sleepy stomp was only 1 fp Edit: enemies toward the end of the pit of 100 trials can also secretly hold life shrooms which is very useful if you are low on them
13:40(ish) - thats probly in reference to how Pro Wrestling (WWE/AEW/etc) does it-- you have your Champion (like Dwayne "Rock Hawk" Johnson here), but then the other guys still have to Compete to see who the Number One Contender is...usually, this is the guy that won the recent Pay-Per-View Main Event (like Royal Rumble), because its a Privilege to have a chance at a Title Match, it has to be EARNED...no one else has 'the privilege' of a match being for the Belt, even if its against the current champion (unless the Storyline needs it to be, but thats a-whole-nother can of worms)...that way, the Champion can still have matches for the fans, without fear of losing the title to some mid-carder...but if the Champion is booked into a match with the Number One Contender, its more likely to be a Title Match, where the belt will go to the Winner of that match (and the Loser will be bumped down to "Number One Contender" for a Rematch, or perhaps they will start a Losing Streak and fall down the card, with someone completely new taking NOC, to reach for the Title)
Wow you made Bonetail look easy. I’ve always wanted to do the Pit of 100 Trials and win, but all these videos show them using badges to raise their attack in peril. Turns out you can use Charge and Power Bounce! Pretty cool!
Hey friend, for the Koopanator fight, were you aware that you could use quake hammer to knock him on his back? He can't fight from there. Makes him a lot easier

Gale Force is (generally) more effective against flying/floating enemies, and also increases in strength as you get further in the game. (I think it's based on Mario's level, but it might be Chapter.) It's very underrated.
This is a real cool video, glad I came across it in my reccommendations. Some thoughts after watching to the end:
- Cortez's weapons in the final phase normally come back any time they are defeated, but Flurrie's Gale Force can take them off the board permanently.
- As everyone's said the chapter into gag is great, thank you for that
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! That point about Goldbob is interesting, that could be a fun twist!
Yeah, challenges are a lot of fun for that reason! You're kind of forced to rethink how you approach the game. Thanks for watching!
Doopliss: What is my name.
Mario: DOOPLISS
Doopliss: Who'd name their kid that?!
the video is a year old by now but I'd like to point out the unique nature of Doopliss' final fight in the steeple.
@@MandatoryPixel ua-cam.com/video/0XDYbnq13IE/v-deo.html
this video showcases the odd behavior if you hack in your partners for that battle
I love the running gag where the chapter transfer screen shortens each chapter
I'm glad to see people enjoying that one! I thought it was funny.
Hey will you be doing sticker star?
Lmao the one frame of the start-of-chapter screens kill me
Good vid and challenge! Thanks for showing the Pit as well. Hope to see more TTYD content from you.
Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! It probably won't be the next video I do, but I'm planning to eventually do this same challenge for the original Paper Mario as well. My plan for the channel is have these challenge videos alongside other types of videos, focused on many different games. Hopefully you stick around!
@@MandatoryPixel Trust me im sticking around. No worries there.
@@michaelgrzybowski4949 Hey there! I just got done with my newest video, so I decided to come back and ask, is there any specific kind of content you'd be interested in seeing, TTYD or otherwise? I can't make any promises, but I'd like to get an idea of what people might want to see!
@@MandatoryPixel Just got done watching your newest video. Very glad you had the funny commentary about it being creepy, because it was. As for video ideas how about a first play-through of a game? Just challenge yourself to beat a game starting off terrible. Alot of people like watching people progress and get better at a certain game. Me personally I would always be happy to see paper Mario, speed runs, and most challenge videos. (especially if its a Mario 64 Challenge) Sadly its hard to find a new one.
@@michaelgrzybowski4949 Thanks for watching the new video, and thanks for the input! I'll keep these suggestions in mind. Like I mentioned before, you can definitely count on seeing many more challenges going forward!
Power Bounce/Charge is a cool combo but I think next time you need to ban this it's too OP
i watched this entire video thinking that you were, like, a way bigger channel. The way the entire video is just radiates big channel energy, so keep up the amazing work!
Thanks very much! If my videos give that impression, then hopefully I'm on the right track, haha. More on the way!
i'm surprised you didn't use quake hammer on Koopinator. it trivializes him and you get it for free in boggly woods. it also wrecks clefts. good use of Flurrie, by the way.
Loved the video! You make some pretty quality content and I really hope you start getting some more views!
Thanks very much! I hope so too, haha!
Actually in Pokemon if you do not have enough money and try to enter the safari zone multiple times, the guy will let you in with just 1 safari ball (in Pokemon yellow, fire red and leaf green, it won't work in red and blue)
True! I just didn't want to mention such a rare circumstance since it wasn't a Pokémon-focused video, haha.
This run should be called “The Hobo Run” after a similar run in Pokémon games
"The second of 2 RPGs in a 6-game RPG series"
I know I didn't just hear that...
How does this only have 41 views? This was so interesting
Thanks a lot! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Agree, this video is super fun to watch, already waiting for the next
@@victisjkb6526 Stay tuned! The next one should be coming pretty soon.
"it's like Mario Sunshine without the hover" hmmmm...... Where do I remember that?
Thanks for the long video. Subbed. Cozy bedtime content. Interesting challenge
Thanks for watching! Glad it was relaxing for you!
I struggled so much with the final boss and you made it look so easy!
13:52 Rawk Hawk is the title holder while just beneath is Koopanater at Rank 1. Pokkén Tournament does something similar as the League Masters are also above rank 1 in their respective leagues. Except for last league, debatably.
10:06 "(With charge), you're able to destroy bosses"
That's how I beat macho grubba hitless
the man trying to save money so hard he is cutting out the transiton cards more and more each time they are needed
Alternate title: Can You Beat Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door if Mario is a greedy penny picking bastard
"what if i need the money later" simulator 2023
13:45 hes the champ. Champions are usually ranked separately from the 1-10 fighters
If I remember right. Rankings in leagues are usually determined by your ability to challenge and defeat the Champion.
So a #1 position represents a fighter being the modt likely to win a match against the Champion.
Sweet Treat/Feast cures status effects immediately, so you didn't have to wait for your shrink and dizzy statuses to fade during the Bonetail fight.
That's true! The reason I waited was because I thought letting the status effects end naturally seemed like a good stopping point for using Charge.
@@MandatoryPixel Math brain go brrr
Heal blocks cost money…. Oh no…..
That petalburg Pokémon soundtrack was perfect :D
I'm glad so many people enjoyed that little gag! Thanks for watching!
This is the first video I've seen on your channel, but the petalburg gag really got me
Good to hear! I like throwing in subtle gags like that one.
Great analysis & run video! I liked the strategies you used, & the lack of stuff like Danger Cheese. Thanks for uploading!
No problem! Thanks for watching!
this made me remember how much personality this game had
Now TTYD is the second and third of 3 RPGs in a 7 game RPG series
My man killed like 1600 Bullet Bills
One of the best games even made, I played the one before this and the one after too, never got to play the others though
Great video quality and humor, I loved it
Thank you!
man this made me wanna play TTYD again. loved the video, hope the algorithm keeps you going
Thanks very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
The title card cut is my favorite gag
14:44 he has a second phase, but charge power bounce can deal so much damage with enough time that you can just completely skip it.
I only remembered he had a second phase when watching another person play it.
koopinator isnt ranked 1 in the normal sense, hes ranked 1 among challengers for the belt, as in he has highest priority for challenging Hawk for the belt, hence why if u lose to hawk, u have to fight koopinator to regain ur right to fight hawk.
That makes sense! I just think it's funny that Rawk Hawk literally says he's "Number One", but then on the boards he doesn't even have the #1 rank.
Great video! Really fun video to watch!
"Only 7 Inn Coupons." Isn't it funny that such an inherently worthless item, in a normal playthrough at least, also happens to be one of the rarest?
I never remember encountered blooper so to hear that it was required before petalburg baffles me
Strange! It's the boss of the prologue, so unless you use glitches you have to fight it.
It is strange, if i glitched the game it was entirely unintentional.
@@lagrush9039 apparently if you jump the first frame that the room loads, the boss doesn’t show up. I think that’s how the glitch works. Speed runners do that.
It's possible that i did that, i was jumping alot throughout my playthrough
@@lagrush9039 That's not quite how it works - this video explains it pretty well: ua-cam.com/video/3O9_aYDXwec/v-deo.html
It's very hard to do this by mistake, so I think it's more likely you just forgot about the boss, haha.
I know I am super late in saying this but In the fight with Cortez in the second phase I believe you can flurry the weapons away permanently to make the fight even easier for yourself if you needed to do that.
Pokémon Emerald Petalburg music plays, I love that 😂
I really like it when people notice the more subtle gags I throw in! Thanks for watching!
It’s happening… the algorithm has chosen you!! I love Paper Mario content and really enjoy this video! Have a sub! I look forward to your future videos!
Thanks very much! I'll give a heads up and say that I'm going to do challenge videos for many different games, not just Paper Mario games. But if you like challenge videos and the overall style of this one, then you can look forward to more!
If you haven't seen it, I also did this challenge in the first Paper Mario! Available here: ua-cam.com/video/x80DOw0UeD0/v-deo.html
@@MandatoryPixel Sure got your usage and then some out of Charge. Lol
Petalburg is the funniest thing in this entire game.
As for the Glitz Pits ranking, being #1 means you are the #1 contender the championship. Its simply a feature of the boxing world circuits.
Would be interesting to see a speedrun category with the objective set to get 999 coins as soon as possible
That's a fun idea!
I think the route would end up revolving around Lumpy - get 300 coins to give him by whatever means necessary, then skip to the end of the game and collect your 999 coin payoff.
Could've skipped Zess T.'s lens by doing a glitch, bypassing the huge blocks underground, you know the one with the fish + Goombella.
I remember I sold every item I had for timing tutor, I genuinely think it is the most broken set of training wheels ever.
Personally also put on flower saver so sleepy stomp was only 1 fp
Edit: enemies toward the end of the pit of 100 trials can also secretly hold life shrooms which is very useful if you are low on them
Oh, that Sleepy Stomp strategy makes a lot of sense! These are cool strategies, thanks for sharing!
13:45 Rank 1 means they have the #1 spot to challenge the champion for the belt
If you're looking for suggestions, maybe do this challenge with Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling.
Your video popped up in my recommended this is a amazing challenge
2:36 I wish you could superguard in that cutscene.
Petalburg joke got me😂
This video was amazing and i'm actually baffled that I, a charge inthusiest, didn't know it could stack!
20:15 sorry to hear you got a poison mushroom bingo on this fight man.
Interesting challenge. Might try this myself once the remake arrives.
Wow you made Bonetail look easy. I’ve always wanted to do the Pit of 100 Trials and win, but all these videos show them using badges to raise their attack in peril. Turns out you can use Charge and Power Bounce! Pretty cool!
Danger Mario is definitely a popular set-up. Thanks for watching!
@@MandatoryPixel So maybe I missed it, but how many times can you stack Charge? Is there a cap?
@@thegreenthunder5416 Nope! You can do it an infinite number of times.
Video: “Getting your coins stolen counts as losing them.”
Me: Oh so just that thing that happens literally 1 minute into the game lol
once you get yoshi you can ride him to get the anti spike badge early from under rouge port
Hey friend, for the Koopanator fight, were you aware that you could use quake hammer to knock him on his back? He can't fight from there. Makes him a lot easier
I've gotten some comments that reminded me of that, but it didn't occur to me in the moment!
