You know that star rod bowser uses to attack you and your partner? Well it also has a secondary effect to remove any buffs your character currently has on you. essentially being a counter to the overpowered charge boots strat.

If you haven’t, you should try bug fables. It has similar fight mechanics to Paper Mario and it has a similar feel, in my opinion at least

The challenge is fun but what convinced me to subscribe was the "chapter transition is faster each time" gag. I love those getting cut off jokes and it made me believe you're worth keeping an eye on

Fun Fact: In Pokemon Yellow its actually possible to enter the Safari Zone for free. You'll only have 1 Safari Ball, but if you just keep trying over and over, eventually the guard will let you in. It was implemented in the game to prevent softlocking since it was possible to run out of money sources throughout the plot.
Yeah, I actually knew about that! I used the Safari Zone as an example because Pokémon is popular, but since it wasn't a Pokémon-focused video, I didn't want to expand on the example too much to confuse things. It's a cool obscure fact for sure though! Thanks for the comment!
why am I only now just learning about this? for YEARS I kept hearing about how this can be a softlock to a game if your out of money, and now you can enter with just 1 safari ball? neat.
@@MrMariosonicmanit is a true Softlock in Red and Blue versions. The failsafe was added IN Yellow, but the versions prior to it don’t have it, meaning you could be permanently stuck in them.
15:20 The light source shining on the right side of Peach (the left side of her face) looks so good. Nice polish on this game.
In final bowser, his attack where he uses the star rod to shoot out an expanding ring of light that hits you and your partner will actually negate and reset all of your charges, regardless of whether or not you block it. It’s annoying to me too since that’s my main strategy against bosses in this game, but it might be why the charge method didn’t work against final bowser for you

Loved this and your thousand year door run! I especially liked the way you cut off the chapter jingle a little faster each time - it was such a small detail but always made me giggle. I feel like it would be really interesting to see this challenge in a game like sticker star or color splash, where a lot of your combat options are entirely based on buying attacks from the shop - not sure if it would even be possible, though. Thanks for the video!

I love this and the last video’s explanation of mandatory story uses of the thing you’re not using and honestly more UA-camrs should use it, like you said the point of the video is to see how the challenge makes it more difficult and if it’s possible to do without using it that’s a fun bonus
7:52 if you spin jump thrice in the spinny roof hut in toad town you get quick change which allows you to switch partners without using a turn

for the bowser fight, instead of picking bombette with her bomb, use watt so you don't waste any FP since watt does a consistent 5 damage even with bowser's damage resistance

2 things
1) Power rush and Mega rush don't stack so thats a waste of BP
2) On Kent C Koopa if you jump on his tail he has no defence which makes it way easier

2: I forgot about Kent C. Koopa's tail, but I think the Lullaby strategy is still easier.

Watt can do 5 damage to Bowser easier than Bombette AND for no FP.
Loved the video! Really like how your humor is mostly done through visual gags that don't stop the flow of the video, the chapters introduction gag was so good LMAO But if I had to give you a suggestion, I'd say to show all the moments where you got items that would be useful in the run, like the specific location where you got each of them. Also, I'm surprised you didn't bring up the Repel Gel at all, could swear it would've been useful during the final battle!

Lovely video! Challenge videos are usually interesting, and I fricking love the Mario RPGs (Sticker Star excluded,) so I'd love to see this challenge in the Mario and Luigi games, since they also use standard RPG money and EXP. Also, you're a true hero for Whacka fans.

Loved both this and the TTYD challenges! Also, just wanted to mention that it is possible to get the Ultra Boots before fighting Huff 'n' Puff, which could do a little more damage or save some FP depending on strategy. Apologies if this was already mentioned and I missed it, just something I thought was worth noting though.

Power Rush and Mega Rush only stack in TTYD, so you wasted 1 BP there.
It’s not a waste since you still get the extra attack power when at 2-5 HP, it’s just not as big of a boost when you get down to 1 HP.
It just depends on context.
Will you die in one hit at 2-5 HP?
Would it be better to just get to 1 HP straight away and get the bigger attack boost, and save that 1 BP for something else?

If you didn't use Power Bounce, a strategy I use to make the Master pitifully easy is get Zap Tap. It blocks him from doing his crazy combo.

I like your style! These 2 challenges have been a blast to watch. And I have a recommendation for a future challenge; bug fables but you only level one of the stats (HP, TP or BP). As far as I know there is no cap for the BP. And of course you could also try beating bug fables without using any berries! Just a suggestion, keep doing what you like!

Fun watch and a good run. But I feel compelled to mention that healing items are actually pretty plentiful, thanks to the...regional?...Items found throughout the world. Stuff like Goomnuts, Koopa Leaves, Eggs and plenty more are found in Infinite supply all over. And since cooking isn't "gated" behind a coin use, it's 100% fair game here, which let's these scavenged items shine even more.
So really, you accomplished both a no-spending AND no cooking run.
Piranha Plants are weak to Sleep, so Lullaby would have bought you more time to focus and refresh.

You can find a dried shroom in a bush in Koopa Village, so the only thing you'd have to spend money on is the Dusty Hammer. If you remember to save the dried shroom for ch.2, then the least amount of money you'd have to spend would be 2 coins.
Aside from that, this is a nice challenge! The chapter intro cuts are funny af.
Does that work? You're told to buy a Dried Shroom and a Dusty Hammer in that order in the shop as a code.

20:48 If you wanna save time short term at the cost of HP -Or just have a laugh- Duplighosts that turn into Bombette can be OHKO'd by Electro Dash.

This challenge could be pretty interesting in a hard mode mod like Pro Mode, just for a bit harder version and balancing.
However, a really interesting one would be Dark Star Edition. A lot of late game items are insanely good due to cooking, however, in this challenge those would be almost completely locked out to you, forcing you to use the many new badges it has.
...so interesting fact about the toy box.
So long as you grab the items off the shy guys but not kill them, you can infinitely scum them for items, and in turn make easy ingredients for taste T

Star Beam removes all buffs from all enemies. It's really useful for wasting an enemy's turns.

I have a challenge I'd like to see you attempt. How confident do you feel about beating Paper Mario 64 without ever healing? Basically, you can only restore HP or FP with level ups, ends of chapters, and forced heals like in the final boss. I'm trying this in TTYD and I'm up to just after Chapter 2. Would be fun to see another perspective on a different game.
Also, Power Rush and Mega Rush can't both be active at the same time. Interesting tactic though to deal with Amazy Dayzees.

Yeah this is worth a rule being made.
The rule helps to account for situations where I can't get back to an area with easy enemies - for example, in chapter 5 of TTYD, you're stuck in an area with tough enemies, which makes it harder to heal during battles. In PM64 there didn't end up being many situations like that, but that's the idea behind it!

What's interesting is, with the amount of glitches in that game, you probably could've just skipped the section where you were required to buy things.
He said he wanted to do it glitchless. That's why he didn't clip his way past Zess T and into Don Pianta's office in TTYD.
If I understand the glitch properly, I think you could do the Blue House Skip to skip past the mandatory coins in chapter 2, yeah!

In general, Bow, Watt, and Sushi are the best party members in around that order. Bow can consistently do the most damage in a single turn with Fan Smack (I know Goombario could possibly do more with Multibonk, but that requires consistently good timing, and it's glitched to work only once against Bosses), and she grants Out of Sight which is just a super powerful ability. Watt is one of your best damage dealers against bosses with 2 Def because her regular attack pierces defense to deal a consistent 5 damage with no FP cost. Sushi has some great use in offering Water Block, which boosts Mario's defense by 1, 2 against Fire based attacks. I personally like Parakarry as well, since he has the best damage against enemies with 1 defense along with Sushi. They can deal 6 damage for 3 FP iirc. I like Parakarry more since his action command is easier and there aren't many Fire enemies that would require the extra damage from Squirt.

"Story moments are excluded as this is more of a self-imposed challenge" I swear it's a 50/50 whether "can you beat" challenges are "is it possible to do this" or "can I, the youtuber, beat this challenge"

I like the glitchless challenges more because they provide gameplay challenges which force you to play the game in different and creative ways. But some glitches are very tricky to pull off and also fun to watch! Just feels like cheating in these kinds of challenges
In the first Paper Mario game, you can use glitches to skip to chapter 5, so a glitched playthrough could do it with zero coins!

I played the game with no items and it's still quite easy thanks to star powers. Refresh, happy heart, and happy flower are more than enough if you're able to guard most attacks. Though in this case you can't buy some good badges from the badge shop, but with 30 bp there's more than enough good badges you can just find or buy with star pieces.
This and the TTYD video were both really interesting to watch! Do you have plans to take on the unconventional games like Super Paper Mario?
Thanks very much! I don't have any immediate plans to do the later Paper Mario games, unfortunately. I don't have as much experience with them as I do with the first two games, and my plan for the channel is to do challenges for many different games, not just Paper Mario games. So not in the immediate future, but maybe sometime!

I usually do the Amazy Dayzee grind with Dizzy Attack Badge, It guarantees a stun on the Amazy Dayzee giving an easy reliable 2 turn kill.
Walking in the thorns 49 times to drop from 50 to 1 hp each lvl up sounds like hell, lol.

My mind tells me they should be called "Counters" as they are referred to as "Konter" in my localization and if I retranslate that in my mind...
15:29 I never understood this part either. This question could've been easily avoided by making the chest too small for Peach to possibly fit into it. Or at least let her have the idea but let Twink stop her for some arbitrary reason like: "It doesn't work with living beings."

This video was more interesting than the TTYD Version. But that's probably because I haven't played the N64 PM nearly as much. (I've only beaten it once.)
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Regarding Superguards, different localizations used different names for it - the Japanese and English versions call it Superguard, the French and German versions call it Counter, and the Spanish and Italian versions call it Super Defense.
One badge you didn’t mention that you should have is HP drain, unlike in TTYD each time you contact an enemy with it equipped you get 1hp back, so if you power bounce you can get like 5hp back a turn, makes topping your HP up stupidly easy

What was going on with the jump charges against final Bowser is that his star rod shockwave attack undoes any charges you have. At least, that’s what I remember.

pro tip for the final bowser watt's basic attack does the same damage as bombette and doesn't cost FP

Paper Mario is just too easy for this sort of challenge. As you pointed out, any time you have access to an enemy that can't damage you, you essentially have infinite healing either through Refresh or just picking up dropped hearts and flowers after battle. And even if you decided to ban both the use of Star Power and after battle pickups, for a mere 8 star pieces you can buy Happy Heart which provides an endless, albeit slow, regeneration ability.
It actually seems pretty difficult to construct a challenge for this game that is both difficult to cheese and still possible to complete. You'd have to get into really esoteric stuff like only allowing each badge to be used for one battle while also banning non-item healing and shops. Or only allowing Mario to use Star Power and having to rely on partners for damage or something.
You're not wrong, it's definitely not an insanely difficult challenge! I find that this ruleset doesn't make the game too difficult, but the way it changes the gameplay makes it a lot of fun to play through and adds enough challenge to make it feel unique.
Here is my take on why peach doesn't get in the magical chest. She has no clue how long it will take for mario to discover her, and she'd be dealing with a limited oxygen supply after closing the lid, so if she got in, she'd probably be dead by the time mario got her out
