It's hilarious that the old man is actually named Old Man Holger when the credits roll. Phelous, it seems you have a knack turn obscure old men into funny jokes.
Here in 2024, we have a new movie called Pulse that got released just this year. I think Phelan's theory of it being a placeholder name might be correct.
I remember reading collection of horror stories for kids with the exact same plot as this. Only that story was better because at least it sort of explains where the evil electricity came from (lighting shorting out the circuits. It's a stupid explanation but it's better than nothing). And there were actually many deaths in that story, all the main characters, who are all children, died at the end. A children's story manages to be written better and be more terrifying than the movie it was ripping off from.
We do (sorta) get an explanation for the evil electricity in this. Not in dialogue, admittedly, but I'm pretty the lightning strike and resulting energy spike at the power plant are meant to show its origin.
Monster Hunter 754 It was part of a collection, which I can't remember what it was called. However I think the story itself is called "Evil in Machine" or something along those lines.
Oh God, that episode of "Wife Swap" where Andy Dick's ex-girlfriend is entirely against microwaves as she thinks they zap out nutrients and states some countries banned them...the kid's apprehension reminds me of that...
So, the TV scans the kid but doesn't digitize him into the system and make him play video games until he dies playing? Come on. This was supposed to be the 80's. Wait, was that really Robert England or just somebody that looked an awful lot like him?
The sampled line "Hey! You forgot the power glove!" is a Robert Englund reading from Freddy's Dead: the Final Nightmare. That might have been what brought him to mind.
Did anyone else think this movie was going to involve a masked killer in a hospital setting? "Pulse...so frightening it will stop your heart."-Possible tagline. As it is, what are we supposed to fear here? Getting burnt or shocked? At the very least, we could have had an on-screen electrocution or house fire on a larger scale. All in all, a missed opportunity for an electrifying thriller.
+Maggie Koch electrifying thriller lol I see what you did there! but seriously, yea, with the title of this movie, the setting in a hospital/asylum with a killer chasing after you would have been better oh wait... didnt they do something like that in silent hill?
12:25 "There is nothing wrong with your television, do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are now in control of the transmission. We control the horizontal and the vertical. We can delude you with a thousand pictures or expand one single image to crystal clarity. For the next hour you will experience the awe and wonder that extends from the deepest inner mind to The Outer Limits."
It's tough to decide what's worse, this or the similarly themed "Ghost in the machine", which I had the "pleasure" of seeing in the theater back in 1993. That movie at least had a hot babysitter and some cool deaths (plus a ridiculous premise) but "Pulse 1988" has this "so bad it's good" quality about it. Tough call.
Aw I loved this movie:( HBO used to play it a lot in the late 80s when I'd catch it as a kid but I'd never get it from the beginning so never knew the name until it came on tv when I was a teen. I recorded it and later bought the DVD. You made some good points (I never really noticed how whiny David was until you pointed it out) but it's not a bad movie. Definitely not a masterpiece but it's got it's moments However I admit its got its faults..the bars on the house were stupid they lived in a pretty nice suburban neighborhood not friggin Compton.
Ok, I think the police had their guns at the dad because he was in possession of a deadly weapon, not because he was taking the power pole down...although that would be destruction of public property. So yeah, that warrants a warning if deadly force purely on the basis the Dad was acting crazy while holding an axe!
i believe that this movie was trying to do a Poltergeist type of movie with the spirit made of pure energy so it being able to lock the doors and all electrical objects kinda makes sense.
2:07 I FINALLY discovered where that music clip came from! I hear it so often in Phelous' vids and always wanted to know where the hell it came from. I feel like I've achieved a lifetime goal!
Thomas Schieferstein Oh really? Haha I thought it was from the film XD No wonder it was so familiar then, I used to watch Charlie Brown when I was younger
Actually, the beginning has everything to do with the plot, considering that after the lightning strike we see a massive energy spike in the power plant, and then travel down the lines to the neighborhood. The implication being that's the (half-ass) origin of the evil electricity.
No, wrong. The lightning is *NOT* the cause. Rather, it is but a sign that electricity is this mysterious thing that we do not really understand. Well whether we do or not understand, let's not let this technicality get in the way of the plot of the movie.
What is with the permenantly depressed child?! Everything little thing makes him sad! Mushrooms, microwaves, the death of a stranger, etc. He's always on the verge of tears. That is a miserable, drama king, pretentious, child!
That ending you did has to be your best one ever. The fake-out death and then the getting electrocuted was very well edited and timed for maximum laughs. I comment what I comment, Phelan, but I'm not downvoting it.
Wait...The Cobras are attacking the Terrordrome? But the Cobras own the Terrordrome. Why're they attacking their own base...And why would the Joes hypothetically station themselves in a place named after "Terror," the very thing they're supposed to fight? Anywho, I think this is my favorite "Phelous Dies Ending" because I didn't see it coming and it sounded painful.
It has a lot of mushrooms in it? That must be before Super Mario Brothers and the NES game console. Give me that plate of food. I would eat every bit of it. I like mushrooms. We should have known that this movie would end horribly. I mean, what was the deal with that painting on the wall of the boy's room? The road heads into a turn, and mysteriously appears to be a dead end with the road disappearing around the bend. Foreshadowing of what will soon happen in the movie? Get out of that spooky house while you still can!
If it's a signal that needs to keep coming in through the power grid, couldn't you disconnect the power lines then run a generator and be fine with electronics? Robert England Ain't Not No Not Telling It Guy doesn't need to go Amish. "This is no Zaku, boy, but I'm not telling it's a Gouf!"
And so I take the journey down the Pulse road.....should've saved that for the next episode. For the record this is one of the examples you shine at. You will bait an switch people and force them to watch other movies with the same name before getting to that movie and by that point theres already somehow 2 sequels. I shower you with praise but I genuinely enjoy they way you've structured and evolved your show over the years. I view it far superior to all other review formats. My fiance can't stand the way you talk though (shes seen/fell asleep to some of your earliest ones with me. Like the original four episodes) Which I find heartwarming because as I explained to her there was a vocal crowd that shat on the way you talked and how you sounded and instead of changing for them you stayed the same or even amplify parts to make it work for your character. I never saw a problem in the way you talk, I like quiet phelous, slow phelous, loud phelous, fast phelous goofy phelous etc. Anyway I'm hoping by the time I am done with this rewatch you can maybe review the latest wrong turn abomination. You by no means have any actual obligations to do so. BUT YOU MUST YOU STARTED THE FRANCHISE YOU NEED TO FINISH IT.
Omg! I saw this movie when I was like 5 and it scared the shit out of me, even tho I had no idea wtf was going on..... I always wondered what movie it was.... a stupid piece of Crap called pulse..... now my life can go on.....
Christina Wilke I saw it around the same age it scared me and then I saw it again as a teenager and it kind of left me feeling unsettled. It's really not that bad. Not a masterpiece but not horrible either
I'll be honest I kind of like this movie because nostalgia. No other reason. It was on Cinemax or HBO constantly when I was a kid. That scene where she got boiled in the shower used to freak me out. Even though it's ridiculous on several different levels.
+LegendsP You want his Pulse (2006) review for that one. Although that's technically a review of the _remake_ of the Japanese film; reportedly the original 2001 version wasn't half-bad.
To be fair, this is probably the best made movie of the Pulse Saga. An extremely low bar and it’s still boring af, but several of the criticisms are pretty nitpicky, and Joey Lawrence gives a solid performance(I don’t WANT him to get taken out by his own stupidity), even if the script is dog$hit.
Dude I fucking been wondering where the hell that line (I know what I know boy, but I’m not telling it) is from. You always use that in your videos & I just think it’s bad ass to finally know where that’s from lol. Oh & Dude, I totally dig that Laser Blast game for the Atari 2600 you got in the background. You always got the koolest toys man lol
I am glad to now know where the "not telling it" part came from!
Good for you. Now, "You get the FUCK... outta heeeeerrrrre."
Same
Really?!?? 😒 DAMMMIT
"I know what i know boy... but I'm not telling it" possibly the best thing ever said in media
It's hilarious that the old man is actually named Old Man Holger when the credits roll. Phelous, it seems you have a knack turn obscure old men into funny jokes.
Ok that is hilarious
I like how no matter how many songs you have to remove/alter to avoid copyright infringement, you keep the sad Charlie Brown music.
Must be public domain
Jesus Christ, the kid needs some anti-depressants. Every slight thing that doesn't go his way seems to make him slip into clinical depression.
4:18 Electrici-T Virus!
4:49 love that Muppet Show joke and totally the icing on the cake!
"I don't apologize...EVER for showing disturbing stuff on my show."
Unless it's a Goodtimes movie or something from Dingo "Animation."
This was years before he introduced us to Old Man.
true, but the point still stands.
I just came up with a really funny and clever comment... But I'm not telling it!
but your telling it right now!
Diabolical!
And about 8 more Pulse reviews to follow....
Insert clip of Phelous going bizerk here.
Poor Phelous. Wow...how many movies are just called "PULSE!?"
Balloon Sage This comment aged well.
Wow
Here in 2024, we have a new movie called Pulse that got released just this year. I think Phelan's theory of it being a placeholder name might be correct.
Maybe the construction workers thought they were in a Dingo Picture.

What's I t called?
William Hiers I see. The intro just got me very confused :p
Monster Hunter 754 It was part of a collection, which I can't remember what it was called. However I think the story itself is called "Evil in Machine" or something along those lines.
Dawn Darrell Samaitha thanks
Oh God, that episode of "Wife Swap" where Andy Dick's ex-girlfriend is entirely against microwaves as she thinks they zap out nutrients and states some countries banned them...the kid's apprehension reminds me of that...
So, the TV scans the kid but doesn't digitize him into the system and make him play video games until he dies playing? Come on. This was supposed to be the 80's.
Wait, was that really Robert England or just somebody that looked an awful lot like him?
It was Charles Tyner, who looks alot like him.
The sampled line "Hey! You forgot the power glove!" is a Robert Englund reading from Freddy's Dead: the Final Nightmare. That might have been what brought him to mind.
They did that to the Mighty Duck man. EMILIOOOOO, in Nightmares.
Oh! That’s where that line comes from!😅
That ending though 🤣
Did anyone else think this movie was going to involve a masked killer in a hospital setting? "Pulse...so frightening it will stop your heart."-Possible tagline. The sad Charlie Brown Christmas music gets me every time :D
10:35 always gets me. One of the best skits. Only Tommy Wiseau from House of Wax is better.
At least the evil currents aren't making birds explode.
Insert clip from Birdemic here.
These reviews deserve a revisit.
*Nobody belittles THE LAAAAAAMP....!*
There was not enough "Bitchin in the kitchen" or "Crying in the bedroom all night" from the father in this movie.
Michael Robbins I was waiting for him to cheat on his girlfriend with his co-worker at the Post Office
TommyKnockers 🤔
Unfortunately, Phelan, there's nineteen Pulse films.
+Sawnikku the Hedgehog BECUASE REASONS!!
that breyer horse he's carrying is "Faith" the arabian stallion and is the mate to the "Hope" mare i got for my mom as a present a couple years back
12:25 "There is nothing wrong with your television, do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are now in control of the transmission. We control the horizontal and the vertical. I'm on a Phelous marathon and every time he rolls his eyes I get the creeps!
Maaaan that was baaaad~. Isn't that baaaaad~? =w=
Insert Michael Jackson singing "Bad" here.
Sooooo baaaaad~...
Just heard that as I read it. XD
Lol
Of all Pulses he did. This one suits the title most.
4:53 At least they didn't use the "blame the kid for something he couldn't possibly do" cliche.
thank god for that
12:27 the TV is transferring the boy to The Grid from TRON.
Aw I loved this movie:( HBO used to play it a lot in the late 80s when I'd catch it as a kid but I'd never get it from the beginning so never knew the name until it came on tv when I was a teen. Those "Louis the Lightning Bug" bumpers were always playing until about a few years ago on the PBS here in NE.
"Electricity is evil" was David Lynch's motto in the late 80's and early 90's.
Ok, I think the police had their guns at the dad because he was in possession of a deadly weapon, not because he was taking the power pole down...although that would be destruction of public property. (Monotone Voice) He was also in "Oliver & Company". I:U
12:42 No One Suspects The Lamp!
You sound so much more Canadian in the early reviews
2:07 I FINALLY discovered where that music clip came from! I hear it so often in Phelous' vids and always wanted to know where the hell it came from. I feel like I've achieved a lifetime goal!
I'm pretty sure it's actually from Charlie Brown
Thomas Schieferstein
Oh really? Haha I thought it was from the film XD No wonder it was so familiar then, I used to watch Charlie Brown when I was younger
It's "Christmastime is Here" from Charlie Brown Christmas.
The Hand of Fate
I found it on youtube :D thank you!
It's funny though, it's supposed to be a happy song
Cute Meowth toy.
I love Phelous´ Pulse Reviews. I rewatch them every few months. Too bad there are no new movies called pulse or are there?
there needs to be. it needs to be a never-ending saga of films that have absolutely nothing to do with each other.
TheCutCrane There is another Pulse movie in post-production about a gay disabled teenage boy that wants to get a sex change so he can be loved.
Todoz Loz Diaz Has he done the one, I think it's called "Pulse" about a video game that possess people or something?
What about the Chris Evans one from a few years ago..? Where he was telekinetic... Wasn't that called Pulse..?
I don't know. Starting to think Pulse is a title you use when you can't think of another one. :)
So random household objects are attempting to kill a person for no discernible logical reason? You should put this kid in a Final Destination film!
Nostalgic for some Phelous
Joey Laurence as David in a cutting edge performance. As well as his younger brother Matthew Laurence in a crisped cut performance as Stevie.....
Actually, the beginning has everything to do with the plot, considering that after the lightning strike we see a massive energy spike in the power plant, and then travel down the lines to the neighborhood. The implication being that's the (half-ass) origin of the evil electricity.

Is it just me or does the "I'm not telling" guy look like that Vault-Tec ghoul from Fallout 4
What is with the permenantly depressed child?! Everything little thing makes him sad! Mushrooms, microwaves, the death of a stranger, etc.
He's always on the verge of tears.
That is a miserable, drama king, pretentious, child!
4:23 don't you mean electrici-t-Virus? XDDDDD
Could've heard more of the soundtrack, I love that late 80s/early 90s synth.
The GI Joe game they were playing with the toys is more interesting than the rest of the movie
10:42 What is this, a Dingo Pictures... picture?
9:06 This has to be one of the funniest sequences of events created by Phelan! XD
That ending you did has to be your best one ever. The fake-out death and then the getting electrocuted was very well edited and timed for maximum laughs.
I comment what I comment, Phelan, but I'm not downvoting it.
I think a better reaction to the light beam scanning you would be "MY EYES THEY BURN!" XD
Wait...The Cobras are attacking the Terrordrome? But the Cobras own the Terrordrome. Why're they attacking their own base...And why would the Joes hypothetically station themselves in a place named after "Terror," the very thing they're supposed to fight?

Everyone on set was high
3:32 I think Phelous would make a great sitter XD
1:14 I'm not gonna lie, that actually made me jump the first time I watched this.
I loved this when it came out.
Very creepy back then.
You probably had to be there.
I pray to jesus and the lord that phelous will review more cheesy 80`s horror movies.
7:33 Start Telling
THE HOUSE IS INFECTED WITH THE E-VIRUS!!!
Wasn’t hard to make that joke man.
Plot twist it was Louie the Lightning bug all along!!
That's the tommyknockers mail man isn't it?
Being honest I loved this movie as a kid
11:00 That's one fine lamp, Linkara would shurly give it a glowing review.
And so I take the journey down the Pulse road.....should've saved that for the next episode. For the record this is one of the examples you shine at. 13:52 Wait. Isn't that the cat clock from the secret "BAD DOG BAD KID" ending?
Oh my god! Phelous made this movie so he’d have something to review!
It’s better than what the movie actually said
5:25
Jimmy Fallon and Bob Saget’s Love child after a drunken/coke fueled evening
The Best Scene in The Entire Movie: 7:32 R.T
Don't horror movies need a hint of an explanation at times? The electricity virus is just there
0:02 - Wait a minute... that's just a rehashed version of the "E.R." theme song... this Movie IS THE WOOOOOOOORST!!!!
Actually, considering E.R. came out in 1994 and this is from 1988, I'm pretty Jay Ferguson's score for Pulse came first.
Still like this movie
Omg! I saw this movie when I was like 5 and it scared the shit out of me, even tho I had no idea wtf was going on..... I always wondered what movie it was.... a stupid piece of Crap called pulse..... now my life can go on.....

Joey Lawrence played Oliver in Disney's "Oliver and Company"
"F for Farley, F for Flavors, F for Fabulous, F for Fast, F for Food"
Actully the TV repairman guy is correct... they went to the moon using a computer equivalent of a pocket calculator on the Apollo :D
I thought Pulse was J Horror movie about Ghost in cell phone this not the movie thinking about.
The only Pulse I've seen was a superpower movie in the Chronicle/Wanted mold starring Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning...
+LegendsP You want his Pulse (2006) review for that one. Although that's technically a review of the _remake_ of the Japanese film; reportedly the original 2001 version wasn't half-bad.
@@taffysaur That was 'Push'.
Is it just me, or does the guy at 7:25 look a lot like Colm Feore?
lol that GI Joe skit was priceless ✨😆 excellent review
12:27 And now he is going to Tron's world.
Hey!
you should totally review Virus (1999)
Isnt the Father also the Adulterer in Tommyknockers?
yup
Myaan, dat movie was byaaad!
So baaad.
cheezdoodle96
Yeeah, wasn't that byaaad?
You always got the koolest toys man lol
what is the name of the theme that is being played at the beginning of your video?
That's the movie's end credits theme by Jay Ferguson.
I too switched back to oil lamps afther watching this movie.
Oh no, my house is burning now, I guess oil lamps are evil too.
holy fuck, this is the ONLY movie i have seen "demone" from fast times in, besides fast time
Wowo
thought Matthew Lawrence was the older brother.
I think it goes Joey, Matthew and they have a younger brother Andrew. They were all on Disney. 😍
12:16 Phelous, you silly. Star Man's theme goes like this: ua-cam.com/video/Q-_tlxrKHcM/v-deo.html
