I’m loving these “no bezel” devices that have been coming out. I always loved how the PS Vita screen just blended in with the rest of the device and it’s nice to see it in these modern handhelds.
Extending the surface of the glass to where it doesnt have to be also allows for more points of failure and I would love that as the maker of the device. The more it breaks the more they can sell

I picked up an Odin 2 Pro about 2 weeks before the Portal got announced. That bezel-less screen looks very cool and makes the Odin 2 look a bit dated, however given the reasons why I chose the Odin 2 I'm still very happy with my choice and not annoyed that the Portal was released so soon. What I would love to see in the future (and would be the only reason to make me replace my Odin 2), would be having the perk of that screen on the Portal but in a smaller form factor. I don't need a screen that big if it's going to come at the cost of a larger unit, but if they could cram a larger screen into the Odin 2 body, then we're talking. I want that balance between portability and screen size that for me the Portal just starts to creep out of the acceptable range of portability for me. Maybe they'll make a Portal Mini at some point that will be the best of both worlds, or try and squeeze that screen or one like it into the Odin 2 shell.
I wish companies would start adding two extra front action buttons to these devices. They don't need to be aligned; a layout similar to the N64 or the original Xbox controller would work fine. This would be really helpful for systems like the Sega Saturn, Sega Genesis, and even the N64.
I know it's not a handheld, but if you are looking for an amazing controller with those two extra buttons (plus four back grip buttons) the Vader 4 Pro is probably the best choice. I'm not sure how it would work with an android device, but it's easy to set up in windows.
This vid almost feel like the device is so darn near perfection, that you had to choose something negative to always go back to (ergos). And if the ergonomics really proves to be this devices only negative side, than lets be honest, its not negative at all. Ayn knows very well that a bunch of companies out there will make grips for this, so designing it with portability in mind is not a bad idea. You can make a flat device like this or the switch more comfortable, but you cant make a steamdeck any more portable. So yeah it does seem like this device is the ultimate one. At least for now..
My boy never hold back on his impression review. You can tell that Russ love AYN product so much but he never limit his self to comment on improving AYN's devices. NO BS, not bias, just a real gamer who is concern with other gamers. Cheers to this impression review, this is all I need to pull the trigger on funding it.
Hey man, I've been thinking about getting Odin 2 and am confused about which one to get pro or base variant. Storage is not my concern as I already have a SD card but does that extra ram really makes a difference I'm talking specifically about switch emulation. Thanks
I think the unsung hero so far has got to be the Retroid Pocket 5. Something I never see mentioned is how well it just overclocks with rocknix. I was able to play TOTK at 30fps 1080p. No heat.
How well does it do with the other Switch games? I've seen some mixed results online but those were usually review units that were slightly bugged. The fact that it can do TOTK is awesome, but is it a stable 30fps? Thanks!
I dunno if it's possible, but would love to see some enterprising developers port Rocknix to this. If it could dual-boot like the RP5, I'd use the internal for Android/Streaming and the SD for Linux.
@@MatthewRunyon-n4g I think a lot of reviewers just rush to post videos because they get paid for them. Nobody takes the time to fully review anything. @SmashingProdigy stable enough for switch emulation, I did have to patch the game to get it to run. If you want stable switch emulation, my suggestion is to use a steam deck.
Man, these Android handhelds of late are really stirring up my gaming lust. I’ve always been a bigger, more PC or Linux-type device kind of guy, but this is looking really, really good. Very interested in seeing the upcoming performance video, great work, as always, good sir!
This video made me decide on Retroid Pocket 5. I feel like I got caught up on specs and performance. This thing is way too big for my needs. I barely use the Steam Deck since it's big as well. Thanks Russ! Now for the color..................
As always a very good impression video, thanks! Anyway I can’t help but notice that you never ever take into consideration the rumble effect of the devices. Is it possible in next videos to talk just a bit about the strength and the effect of rumble feature? Personally, it has always been a crucial point for choosing where to play a specific game. Thank you Russ for your awesome work!
Hi, yeah I often don't talk about rumble in my videos. The rumble on this device is good, it feels solid and even across the handheld, and not too strong. There are four tiers of strength: low, med, high, highest, and med is the default. Even though I prefer a very light rumble, the med setting has been perfect for me and I haven't lowered it.
OLED screens are definitely the way to go forward with handhelds. Can’t wait for mini handhelds to get that upgrade as well. Miyoo mini OLED, my wallet is ready
I LOVE your videos ❤❤❤ especially the grams in weight comparison is what I needed cause it's clear to me after testing that anything heavier than the G cloud will probably be too heavy when lying down and just generally portability wise. they seem like a really cool company to innovate in that niche.
Looks great. I but it's way to big. I will still go for the Retroid Pocket 5, because I want a portable device. If this was the same size as the Retroid Pocket 5, I would definetly pay the 100 dollars more to get this one.
Odin portal review in 20 seconds it has Ayn odin build quality (ie.fantastic), odin 2 chipset and looks like a retroid pocket 5 with a bigger screen..job done!
I'm actually super happy about the flatter design. I have hand issues from years of working using keyboards and playing games. The fatter grips of the steam deck cause my RSI's to flair up since I have to keep my fingers curled in for too long. In general flatter designed devices don't hurt my hands in the same way.
Almost 40 min and no comments about how much the battery lasted while playin... kind of a very important factor, much more than finger prints or weight dude
like always 1st video is specs and testing of the look, feel and some screen stuff, 2nd video is the real testing, 3rd video is the review, expect your battery stuff to be known by video 3 which can't come before software is finalized. They also most likely have an embargo about battery like every manufacturer prior to final versions
Off-topic here, but I would like to thank you for your effort in reviewing these consoles! I just received my RG35XXH, even if it's not the RG Cube I was able to buy, it still feels more nostalgic and good to the touch! I just couldn't find the Pokémon though...but thank you very much!
For the pro model of the og Odin I actually found the biggest qol upgrade was the increased storage not the ram. It's nice not having to manage storage quite so much
I was on the fence between this and the Odin 2 Pro. Looks like I will be getting an Odin 2 Pro! Ergonomics mean a lot to me and for some reason (even though the screen is larger) I didn't imagine it would be a larger device. Thanks for the first impressions Russ! I think I will wait til it comes out so the Odin 2 Pro can get a price reduction.
I can't imagine the ergonomics will feel much different than the Odin 2. It looks to be about 1-1.5 inches wider, and looking at images of both in profile, the grips look basically the same. Everyone's needs are different though. If you want it to be smaller and don't mind not having the OLED, then by all means, save yourself some money with the Odin 2.
I love this thing.. the lack of full sized sticks is the only thing that hangs me up.. I had an Odin 2 and tried using the Slug’s workshop stick caps but i just couldn’t get past them. I ultimately sold the Odin 2 because of it. If the portal had the Loki sticks it would have been a day one purchase.. maybe the Odin 3..
Alright I've taken the plunge with a base, plus case and screen protector. It won't get cheaper for a long time and it may get more expensive over the next year, besides, I've wanted an Odin2 for a long time, I get that this isn't as nice to hold, but I'll take my chances I think. Yep, they'll be something better next year or the year after, an Odin3 one day, all of that, but this device should do what I want it to do.
My takeaway from this impression video is that we are getting near perfect emulation device. If there is a revision or the Odin 3, then it would be wise to fix the back plate with a better/larger grips, better/larger sticks, rog ally or psp style Face buttons size wise, dpad style is fine but a tad larger and lastly snapdragon 8 gen 3 to match Odin 3.
I want to remind some of yall that not much later than this, the Switch 2 will be released, which will probably also have an oled screen, but play every Switch game perfectly. And on top of that it will be able to play Switch 2 games =P
I just finished your RP5 review and agreed that if it was just a little bit more powerful and an analog centric design it would be perfect. Then scrolled down to see this.
Already got the Odin 2 Pro but this Portal looks so refined. Tempting looks but I hardly play on the Odin 2 Pro so maybe no.....for now? Hmm, curious on handheld pcs. Looking into the compact Ayaneo Air 1S.
The screen is so so so tempting. I love my Odin 2 Pro: how comfortable it is for my hands and how powerful it is, I set it to the lowest performance mode/fan off and go in pretty much everything I use it for. My use case for the Portal would be about the same, steaming PC and Playstation games with some emulation here and there. I'd miss the fingerprint reader, guess that was a victim of the slimmer design. It really sucks that this device has smaller grips, they look similar to the size of the grips on the original Odin which I found to be fairly uncomfortable. Russ can you confirm if the portal grips are smaller than the Odin 2 grips?

@@KajukotaI use the Vader 4 Pro playing mostly Rocket League and it's considerably better than the Xbox controllers I've used for years.
This years best device video is going to be so awesome
it is time for a snack and drink, been waiting for this one
Amazing video Russ! Thank you so much for the impressions! I really want to get one but it's hard to justify when I already have a steam deck OLED lol
I ordered one of these suckers as well as the RP5. This beast will be my PS2+ handheld. Hope PS3 emulation gets better on Android soon!
The quality of your videos is insane 👏
Thank you 🙌
as a Odin 2 Pro owner, that screen looks amazing in comparison!
Hey man, I've been thinking about getting Odin 2 and am confused about which one to get pro or base variant. Storage is not my concern as I already have a SD card but does that extra ram really makes a difference I'm talking specifically about switch emulation. Thanks
Great video as always thanks for all the in depth reviews
Got a video to show that? Definitely not heard any reviewers cover that. Not too many reviewers even touched on the Linux side.
I have been WAITING for this. Yess!
That screen is so crisp it almost looks like you green screened the footage. This device is definitely going on the wishlist.
Love your experiments with design in each video. Good work and great attention to details!
@ I’m so glad to hear it, thank you for the answer, I can’t wait for your final review! 😄
Does a switch case work with it?
It really looks exactly like a giant Retroid Pocket 5 with a staggered stick layout.
OLED screens are definitely the way to go forward with handhelds. Can’t wait for mini handhelds to get that upgrade as well. Miyoo mini OLED, my wallet is ready
Damn a miyoo oled will be a dream
The Retroid Pocket Mini uses OLED
@@1993StrangeBoy not small enough
I don't even click a link unless it has an oled screen. Lcd is a deal breaker.
I LOVE your videos ❤❤❤ especially the grams in weight comparison is what I needed cause it's clear to me after testing that anything heavier than the G cloud will probably be too heavy when lying down and just generally portability wise. they seem like a really cool company to innovate in that niche.
I don't get why they made such shallow grips, do they think people are putting these in their pockets??
I'm really glad he gets a early device ayn is already addressing allot of the stuff in the video
That front glass looks so breakable
Duuuuudeee this is so cool… i reeeally want a 16 bit version though imagine how good it would look
Looks great. I but it's way to big. I will still go for the Retroid Pocket 5, because I want a portable device. If this was the same size as the Retroid Pocket 5, I would definetly pay the 100 dollars more to get this one.
Yes! Been waiting all morning, now have lunch time entertainment, thank you Russ! Cannot wait to get my Super Early Bird Indigo *soon*!
Got a sandwich and a drink
Same
I went with hot dogs.
i got some oreos and some sparkling water
Nice 👌🏾
got a bacon egg and cheese, BLT and a large Arizona
You know it's gonna be a good day when Russ says "Grab a snack and drink" lol
Can't be the only one that makes a little dance with the intro music
at announcement i wasnt feeling this one so much but seeing it here, it looks amazing
Ma! The meatloaf! We want it now!!!
Mf become channel members and just start typing anything
@ it just felt right, what can I say
Chazz!
This has amazing ergonomics. Much better than the Odin 2. Russ is just a steam deck novis
Not a fan of the LED lights and the all glass front, sticking to the Odin 2 pro for me ! 😊
Omg those triggers are hilariously big! 🤡
Dropped EVERYTHING, have snack and drink, and its time to view!

Screen to body ratio makes this a great option. Was thinking of getting a 6 incher
I want to remind some of yall that not much later than this, the Switch 2 will be released, which will probably also have an oled screen, but play every Switch game perfectly. And on top of that it will be able to play Switch 2 games =P
Been waiting all day for this 🥰
Bro called the bulgy grips honkers all of a sudden, brain chemistry has been changed forever
I just finished your RP5 review and agreed that if it was just a little bit more powerful and an analog centric design it would be perfect. Then scrolled down to see this.
I love my Odin and Odin 2. Might buy this one too just to have it lol.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DEVICE!!!
Already got the Odin 2 Pro but this Portal looks so refined.
Tempting looks but I hardly play on the Odin 2 Pro so maybe no.....for now?
Hmm, curious on handheld pcs.
Looking into the compact Ayaneo Air 1S.
JUST WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR! WOOO
Russ. I love you. But you're like the greatest commercial for needlessly blowing money on retro handhelds. You crush my willpower.
To note, only the Steamdeck OLED is bigger than the Portal, the Steamdeck LCD is the same screen size as the Portal.
Let’s go!!! Love watching new Retro Gaming Corps in the morning 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for the detailed review!
Bit the bullet and pro ordered. So glad I waited to buy a product of ayn. Be perfect for my android gaming xD. Thx for ur reviews dude
