Mannnnnnnn I've had my Odin 2 for a year and it's my favorite handheld and arguably best system I've ever owned. 7 inch and OLED is really making me consider upgrading
When you're happy with your device, why upgrade? There will always be a new shiny thing in this rapidly developing market. The novelty will soon wear off, as it always does-especially when the next device comes out.
So glad I didnt plan to purchase RP5 until next year and this pops up. This channel is what got me into retro handheld gaming and continues to bring amazing content. Thank you for doing what you're doing for us, Russ. ❤️
Wow! The size comparison between the Odin 2 Portal and the Retroid Pocket 5 finally put my mind at ease for my RP5 purchase. I didn't realize the size difference would've been that big. The Odin 2 Portal is too big for my needs. I just wish the RP5 had the left thumbstick on top. It would've been perfect otherwise.
I’m loving these “no bezel” devices that have been coming out. I always loved how the PS Vita screen just blended in with the rest of the device and it’s nice to see it in these modern handhelds.
Extending the surface of the glass to where it doesnt have to be also allows for more points of failure and I would love that as the maker of the device. The more it breaks the more they can sell
I recently got my Odin 2 Pro in the mail, and as much as I love the prospect of the Odin 2 Portal and its upgrades, I’m in no rush to pick one up in all honesty. Sure, I’ll probably get one *eventually*, but I’m beyond happy with my current Odin 2 Pro 👍
Glad I pre-ordered/backed the Portal. Shaping up to be a near perfect device for my needs. And the ergo/grip issue will be solved pretty quickly via a few Etsy sellers I'm sure. Some easy on/off grips is almost a good thing imo, keeps the device slimmer/lighter and more portable.
I think the unsung hero so far has got to be the Retroid Pocket 5. Something I never see mentioned is how well it just overclocks with rocknix. I was able to play TOTK at 30fps 1080p. No heat.
How well does it do with the other Switch games? I've seen some mixed results online but those were usually review units that were slightly bugged. The fact that it can do TOTK is awesome, but is it a stable 30fps? Thanks!
I really appreciate your insight and input about the ergonomics, that was definitely a surprise to see that it wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but at the same time, I'm totally up for some mods/3d printed upgrades to help ease that. On the bright side, if that's the worst part about it, I think we've got a pretty amazing handheld coming our way!
11:05 To be honest, its not just the design of the devices itself. Its the homepages, the parts they are selling, the ordering and shipping process an even the shipping packaging, its all so similar, i still believe they are the same company.
I wish companies would start adding two extra front action buttons to these devices. They don't need to be aligned; a layout similar to the N64 or the original Xbox controller would work fine. This would be really helpful for systems like the Sega Saturn, Sega Genesis, and even the N64.
I know it's not a handheld, but if you are looking for an amazing controller with those two extra buttons (plus four back grip buttons) the Vader 4 Pro is probably the best choice. I'm not sure how it would work with an android device, but it's easy to set up in windows.
Love to see you covering BFI. This is a great feature especially in combination with super bright displays. Really gets you close to CRT motion clarity.
OLED screens are definitely the way to go forward with handhelds. Can’t wait for mini handhelds to get that upgrade as well. Miyoo mini OLED, my wallet is ready
I had both pre-ordered but canceled the RP5 last week. I feel like it'd mostly collect dust if I got both. Prefer the control layout of the Portal anyways.
I prefer the Portal over the RP5 but I'm scared to bite the bullet in ordering one in case they announce the Odin 3 shortly after with the same form factor as the Odin 2m just with an OLED screen and better chipset.
@@EliHank it'll probably be a while. I'd imagine odin 3 lineup will have 8 elite soc, but it's too new/expensive right now. But if not an 8gen3 isn't a big enough spec bump for me, they'd have to significantly improve other aspects. 8gen2 can run most if not all things maxed out and basically has the same battery efficiency as the 8gen3. If they released an Odin2 mini refresh with oled and better thermals I'd probably still buy alongside the portal.
Been dying for this video to drop. So happy when it did today, really picked me up from having a bad day. To be honest the dopamine hit alone from Russ’s intro music and just his whole approach, thoroughness and editing is peak satisfaction, at this point you could literally apply your same approach to reviewing hoovers or automated cat litter trays and I would still be hooked to your channel. Keep on it! Many thanks!
For the pro model of the og Odin I actually found the biggest qol upgrade was the increased storage not the ram. It's nice not having to manage storage quite so much
this is the first time i’ve noticed how outstanding oled can be. haven’t made the jump to any oled devices yet (because of broke) but my GOD these games looked like they were added in post. like crystal clear…clearer than the others. is it just a size thing? am i getting old??? 🙃 great video as always, my dude. can’t wait for the full review!
That screen so crisp, it looks like it's added in post. Damn. The refresh rate is the game changer for me, but the overall physical size is a no-go. I'm already at the limit of portability with the existing Odin 2, barely fitting in the bags I can casually bring anywhere. 😂
As an owner of neithe Retroid or Odin, you video just convinced me to pick the RP5. The screen, the size, the portability, the weight... It looked like a Vita, which is still to me the holly grail of handheld...
This vid almost feel like the device is so darn near perfection, that you had to choose something negative to always go back to (ergos). And if the ergonomics really proves to be this devices only negative side, than lets be honest, its not negative at all. Ayn knows very well that a bunch of companies out there will make grips for this, so designing it with portability in mind is not a bad idea. You can make a flat device like this or the switch more comfortable, but you cant make a steamdeck any more portable. So yeah it does seem like this device is the ultimate one. At least for now..
This video made me decide on Retroid Pocket 5. I feel like I got caught up on specs and performance. This thing is way too big for my needs. I barely use the Steam Deck since it's big as well. Thanks Russ! Now for the color..................
And when my inner monolog pops up and says "do you want to buy this" I say, "yeah man, I wanna do it" Already got my pre-order in for the max. Cannot wait. Thanks for the video russ. Ive watched it at least 5 times today 😂
Love my Odin 2 Pro. I couldn't resist pre-ordering this in the same color. Got the pro again just to have a little bit of buffer with the extra ram and storage but mainly just so I could get the color I wanted.
I'm actually super happy about the flatter design. I have hand issues from years of working using keyboards and playing games. The fatter grips of the steam deck cause my RSI's to flair up since I have to keep my fingers curled in for too long. In general flatter designed devices don't hurt my hands in the same way.
Odin portal review in 20 seconds it has Ayn odin build quality (ie.fantastic), odin 2 chipset and looks like a retroid pocket 5 with a bigger screen..job done!
Looks great. I but it's way to big. I will still go for the Retroid Pocket 5, because I want a portable device. If this was the same size as the Retroid Pocket 5, I would definetly pay the 100 dollars more to get this one.
My takeaway from this impression video is that we are getting near perfect emulation device. If there is a revision or the Odin 3, then it would be wise to fix the back plate with a better/larger grips, better/larger sticks, rog ally or psp style Face buttons size wise, dpad style is fine but a tad larger and lastly snapdragon 8 gen 3 to match Odin 3.
So after watching the video, I do feel like I still prefer the original Odin 2. I'm not a fan of glass displays and I find more charming Odin's 2 form factor, and I'm willing to sacrifice the better screen for a more affordable price. My only problem with these devices is that I'm late to buying them. The switch 2 could come out at any point next year and if I can emulate DS, 3DS and PS2 on top of native switch games, there would be no point in buying the Odin 2 instead. PD: Great video and thanks for all you do for this community, you rock 🙌🏻
ayn succeed again. There is just nothing stopping them. From Making Awesome Devices. I was going to buy a Odin 2 but I think I buy this one instead. they both look amazing.😛😀
I was actually about to comment that those prices are basically Steam Deck prices, and then you mentioned it. 😂 Personally I don't think I would choose this over a Steam Deck.
Was thinking about getting this vs getting Retroid Pocket 5. Didnt care about price. Went with RP5 because of the weight (280g). 420g (Odin 2 Portal) seems kind of a lot for a portable handheld device. I wanted to keep weight as close as possible to a PSP weight. Weight was also the main reason I got rid of my Steam Deck. And didn't get Odin 2 Mini because of its bezels, very offputting.
Great impressions video! Thank you for putting this video together before the Indiegogo campaign ended. Regarding ergonomics, does it feel similar to the Odin 2? I found that one comfortable enough and am considering upgrading to the Portal. I was hoping to see more comparisons to the original Odin 2 as it seems like this one is meant to be an upgrade from it. I placed my preorder for a black model. I hope the OLED screen will blend in well with that color. After watching your video, I’ll be keeping my preorder. Thanks again.
Now this has me wondering if the nuances with the EVO, like larger sticks, more ergo grip, slightly higher refresh screen, will make a difference. I commented in Retro Handheld's community post about how odd it is that we're not seeing review units from EVO. This would've been a great opportunity to contrast and compare and if EVO had any additional benefits, it would be good to know at about this time. Generally I'd guess software support would go to Portal while comfort, minus the triggers, would go to EVO but who knows for sure until final units are in hand.
Honestly, if you play at home and you want size then this will be the best Android handheld. I mean, it's actually the software that will limit such devices, so hopefully, this is the ultimate android handheld :) I have Odin 2 and was thinking really really long if i need the upgrade but screen itself (some games for nintendo switch had still too small text) made me preorder it :D I hope PC Engine shmups on this OLED screen with this BFI (if it works on the PC Engine core) will look absolutely awesome! :)
Cheers Russ, screen looked awesome on video. But is the Portal too polished? It may be just a phase I'm going through but I'd prefer a Y700 and tele controller for the use case. Not necessarily better, but a subtly different vibe.
I was on the fence between this and the Odin 2 Pro. Looks like I will be getting an Odin 2 Pro! Ergonomics mean a lot to me and for some reason (even though the screen is larger) I didn't imagine it would be a larger device. Thanks for the first impressions Russ! I think I will wait til it comes out so the Odin 2 Pro can get a price reduction.
Problem hitting that close with the Max is what you nailed to me, the Steamdeck price. At $550 that means you already get a 512 gb. The mid-tier at $400 isn't a horrible price esp. with the 120 display though I could care less about 120. Also having that little bit of extra RAM is nice.
only thing is if you drop it the glass front will break on the sides and that will ripple into the entire screen. That's whats been going on with the RP5.
And I just bought odin 2 a few months ago. I'm very upset now. Anyway. I'm going to enjoy what I have for as long as possible and then get the next best thing when this one is done for
Well crap, now I’m even more undecided on what color to get. Thought I was going to go black this time around to make the screen more immersive, but that Indigo is so pretty! Ack what do I choose?! 😅
My only hesitation on getting a odin 2 portal is the importation fees since I would get the pro model as some android games struggle with only 8 gb of ram and I'd think 12 gb would be enough for me. On the flipside I also would be fine with the rp5 since I'm mainly wanting a more powerful android device than the logitech cloud since a few android games I would play would work on the rp5. If only for the price I'm leaning towards the rp5 which would be a solid upgrade for me since it will not be my primary handheld which for me is my steam deck. The rp5 will probably be my go to android device and be a solid secondary device to my steam deck. But will definitely check out your review for the portal when you get the final device.
Now AYN needs to take some of their munnies and invest it in open source forks of Retroarch and Rocknix. Perfect BFI and access to Xemu would make the Portal crazy good.
This literally looks like what a perfect Nintendo Switch should look like 😂. Man I wish someone could modify the switch os to run on smartphones that way we found play all those switch games on better hardware
That screen looks beautiful. Still warming up to the idea of getting a Retroid 5 and now this pops up. I'll never end up getting one at this rate 😅
In the exact same position lol
same, trying to justify the Retroid 5 purchase then this pops up
The Odins size is kind of a deal breaker. I also have a steamdeck so it's even less of a factor. I got the retroid pocket 5 because it's smaller

only thing is if you drop it the glass front will break on the sides and that will ripple into the entire screen. That's whats been going on with the RP5.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DEVICE!!!
Hey Russ, I’m curious on your thoughts on the ergonomics for d-pad centric games. Is it on par with the RP5?
Awesome first impressions
Dog this is HUGE holy shit. so glad i got my odin 2 mini pro.
And I just bought odin 2 a few months ago. I'm very upset now. Anyway. I'm going to enjoy what I have for as long as possible and then get the next best thing when this one is done for
What a relief, my early bird can't come soon enough
Its amazing what is happening with gaming technology.
This literally looks like what a perfect Nintendo Switch should look like 😂. Man I wish someone could modify the switch os to run on smartphones that way we found play all those switch games on better hardware
I'm absolutely waiting for the sale 😆
