A "Sour Mash" whiskey is similar to a "Sourdough Bread " in the way of using a portion of a previous fermentation. Definitely a flavor difference in the end product.
Almost all major bourbon distillers and Tennessee whiskey makers in the US use the Sour Mash process. They just don't put it on the bottles or market it.

Hello Brad Wilson, I agree 100% & Woodford Reserve is my FAVORITE Bourbon. It's been my Christmas Eve & Christmas Day tradition for decades. Best regards, Ben
woodword is brown foreman. would be better off doing same style lineup with old forrestor. woodford doesnt have enough variety without getting into hard to find limited stuff.
Burbon needs to be aged in a single use white oak cask. This is why we've got so many "Burbon barrel aged" things because they only use the casks once so we have a market.
Actually, not a "single used" but a new charred white oak barrel, barrel entry at no more than 125 proof (62.5% ABV), no additives allowed (other than water to lower the barrel entry proof to 125 proof ), the mash must consist of at LEAST 51% corn. And unlike what many think, there is NO minimum time required for it to be in the new charred oak barrel. Simply passing the white dog through the barrel and capturing it as it comes out suffices. When you start talking straight bourbon and bottle and bond there are additional requirements. Those old barrels that bourbon are aged in cannot be used again for bourbon... but they are sold and used by other distilleries, frequently for Scotch and Irish whiskey. Some of the craft distilleries here in Texas that do whiskies (not bourbon) like Andalusia use "dead" bourbon barrels and bring them back to life and then barrel their peated whiskey in them.
YES!!!! Michter's!!! Some lovely soul out there read my mind: I've wanted to send the crew these exact offerings from Michters for ages now. By far my favorite whiskey. Especially the Rye. Don't know where you get your age requirements from. There is NO age requirement for bourbon. You could literally fill the barrel with new make, then immediately pour it out and bottle it, that's enough for bourbon. No one actually does that to my knowledge but there are plenty of 6 to 18 month bourbons out there. Now to call it STRAIGHT Bourbon, it has to be aged at least 2 years. To call it Bottled in Bond, it must be aged at least 4 years.
I love Michter's so much. I'm really glad you guys got to try the Small Batch American Whiskey. It is one of my absolute favorites. I think they use USED barrels rather than new ones, which is why it's not a bourbon. But it imparts some real good flavors in there.
