    As an uneasy ceasefire continues to hold in Eastern Ukraine, VICE News returns to Donetsk with an exclusive film that follows some of the characters involved in setting up the self-proclaimed state of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).
    In early April 2014, pro-Russia rebels seized the regional administration building and other key institutions in Donetsk, expelling Ukrainian officials and raising their own flag. The rebellion here - and other incidents elsewhere - quickly escalated into a bloody civil war that has left over 2,000 people dead and displaced more than a million.
    Filmed over six weeks, this documentary follows the chaotic birth of the DPR as it tries to forge a path to independence and closer ties to Russia.

      @@cannedstarfish6194 Exactly. What those western countries are doing, pumping more weapons into Ukraine, is the opposite of what would help bring negotiations back and peace closer. Unless NATO actually gets involved, the Donbass is independent from Ukraine so I don't see why they still do it unless to fuel the war like they did in Syria - almost exact same, but instead of jihads they use they use the armed forces of Ukraine, which for the most part are not Nazi.
      It is true that Russia is the aggressor, but context always matters, *always* Ukraine is simply a pawn in this chess game of west *vs* east.

      @@cannedstarfish6194 The problem with that statement is that Ukraine had a government that didn't care about their people's life or rights, that ended up with the revolution in 2014. Then Russia invaded and stole Ukrainian soil. The land that was promised to them when they gave up all their nuclear weapons in the agreement that Russia would never attack their country. The world should 100% continue to send weapons to Ukraine so they can protect their own sovereignty and fight back the dictatorship of Russia and let the Ukrainians get back their own land.

    • @jcarter3238
      @jcarter3238 7 років тому +62

      BrainBytes It's a reaction people have when being violently targeted for being loyal to their previous government that was also violently ousted by thugs. And technically, the land was Russian but was given in exchange for several things. But the Ukraine has squelched on their deal so I'd say they're taking it easy on the Ukraine when contractually the land should go back to Russia since the contract is no longer being honored or recognized. Don't you think? Either way, it's between them and no other country should get involved financially or militarily.

    • @brainbytes3484
      @brainbytes3484 7 років тому +61

      I express solidarity to the the DPR, but in the end, they are being used by Putin right now. The communists that made up the republic are losing power in the face of Russia's neoliberalism. The days of the USSR are (sadly) gone.
      That said, I recognize Crimea as free from Ukraine, and if the the rest of eastern ukraine wishes, they should be allowed as well.
      I'm only concerned this is going to devolve into what my post said: two ethno nationalist sides foghting it out, one side supported by western powers, and the other by Putin.

    • @jcarter3238
      @jcarter3238 7 років тому +5

      BrainBytes Hmmm. Well I'm not sad the USSR is not in existence, nor are any of my in-laws currently living in Kiev and Russia. And I'm not sure what you mean by being used by Putin. Would it be bad geopolitically for Putin if the EU grabbed Ukraine? Of course. But it would be equally bad for the people in Ukraine. And culturally speaking it would be the death of any nuclear family values. I guess I'm not seeing how they're being used or exploited when it's mutually beneficial.

    • @brainbytes3484
      @brainbytes3484 7 років тому +13

      But did you not just say that other countries should stay out of this both militarily and financially?
      Regarding the USSR, it was the other superpower preventing the US from becoming the sole superpower. It prevented what the US wants right now, military and financial hegemony of american interests around the world. While the USSR has a terrible past regarding human rights violations, I am in the camp it could have been saved, albeit some restructuring (perhaps more of a confederacy).
      We're seeing this in NATO's expansion eastward past germany, which Bush H.W and NATO promised Gorbachev wouldn't happen in exchange for a united germany. With the collapse of the USSR, that deal disappeared. The Ukrainian conflict largely stems from NATOs expansion into Georgia and Ukraine, and the pressure it is putting on Russia through this.
      In regards to the exploitation by Putin? Like I said, I admire the DPR for standing up against Ukraine's semi-fascist government. But, many of these separatists are former soviet citizens or communists who want to return to the system they had before. Now that the DPR is more tied with Russia, that wing of revolutionaries and leftists no longer have influence, and instead are part of Putin's plans of political posturing and economic neoliberalism.
      That's mainly why I don't see it as mutually beneficial, but instead as a lopsided deal for the DPR.

    • @jcarter3238
      @jcarter3238 7 років тому +3

      BrainBytes Well the end goal IS to become one with Russia. They simply had to break free first from the Ukraine. Regarding America, it's the NWO (and yes NATO is a big part of that) that Bush was so fond of, rearing its ugly head only now the status quo calls it globalism. The EU was the giant first leap for globalism. The democrats and a good chunk of republicans are huge supporters of this. There is a lot of money to be made in globalism for a circle at the top, the next tier does it in the name of utopia, perfect world, no boundaries, no race, no gender, no class etc. So they work the propaganda and push it through the system in the name of equality and love. Keep both parents working and children raised by the system because it's about 'gender equality'. The rest at the bottom suffer greatly with no voice. This is what ruffles Putin's feathers. Putin is doing his best to model his country, as is China, after the Nationalist and sovereign America circa 1940. But globalism is a poison that seeps into the youth and this strikes fear in nationalist sovereign nations. They see the coming threat. This is why the recent reactions to and policies on homosexuality and pornography have come up in Russia. Russia and China have both stated recently that the US was great once but has completely fallen. There is very little respect left.
      It's really funny when you think about it. Trade the word communism for globalism and it's like the US is becoming what Russia was depicted as, and Russia is in the shoes the US was wearing long ago. We now hold the poison dismantling values and governments with corruption.
      I did mean what I said about staying out of it. But this does involve Russia at its core. I'm just an average Joe talking, I'm not Secretary of State. America should stay out of this. But our opinions don't even matter so who the fuck are we anyway.

      and idk about here, but a lot of times early on there were attacks on older ppl during 'commemorations' because they were literally veterans of n*zl gen0cide m4ssacres the UPA or O UN-B did who would come out in uniform, and the g0vt started supporting marches and monuments for them while outlawing s0viet symbols and marches and celebrations and songs, and there were clashes from s0viet descendents who fought the f*sclsts.
      possible also this guy was some politician or oligarch or something (many olgarchs funded the early n*zi battalions,like ih0r k0lomoisky, zelenski's financier did). he was wearing a suit and his wife had a really fancy looking handbag. none of the locals seemed to have such nice things on them.

    Partiia Lenina - sila narodnaia
    Nas k torzhestvu kommunizma vediot!
    O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
    To Communism's triumph lead us on!
    They were singing the USSR and not the current Russian federation anthem.
    29:59 Сквозь грозы сияло нам солнце свободы,
    И Ленин великий нам путь озарил,
    На правое дело он поднял народы,
    На труд и на подвиги нас вдохновил.
    Skvoz grozy siialo nam solntse svobody,
    I Lenin velikij nam put ozaril,
    Na pravoe delo on podnial narody,
    Na trud i na podvigi nas vdokhnovil.
    Through tempests the sunrays of freedom have cheered us,
    Along the new path where great Lenin did lead.
    To a righteous cause he raised up the peoples,
    Inspired them to labour and valourous deed.
    This song ended with mentioning the victory of communism!

    We had this in Croatia in the 90s. They invaded instantly after we seceded from Yugoslavia, claiming to protect Serbian-speaking areas (languages are the same, Serbian is just simplified Croatian, as their grammar was printed 200+ years after ours and the language misses some complicated rules and regulations, making it effectively rural Croatian).
    In the end, we expunged their entire population from our country without committing a massacre. Best thing we ever did. Remember that ethnic cleansing and genocide are not the same thing. Ethnic cleansing can be very justified and can be done without a drop of blood.
    A few people knew back then it was Russia's tactics. Use a huge federation (Yugoslavia, USSR) and seed your population all over it's republics so that one day you can claim the territory as your own. This is how Serbia attempted to secure a coastline but ended up landlocked and bombed by NATO.
    I predicted the war in Ukraine at my university (history course) in 2009. I compared the case to Serbia, to which people, including the professor who has a doctorate in modern history, laughed at me hysterically.

The thing is, the Donetsk Oblast HAD a functioning government-it was a productive region of Ukraine. Then these loonies came along and tossed it out in favor of a government of rival groups that just fought each other all the time.

    I'm native russian speaker. The translation is sometimes inaccurate. For example when Roma is talking to one of his men at 4:38 the translation is as if Roma is informed that they captured an enemy fighter and got a ransom for him, being unclear what is left to be settled here and why he's asking his dude to show him some gun. They use slang so even I didn't get what he's saying at first. In reality the dude is telling Roma they somehow wrongly acquired a free gun but now are asked to pay for it yet the finance people are saying this can be only settled through Roma, with the gun being later shown.
