- In 2014, Ukraine was under siege and the military was unprepared. Desperate, the government urged anyone to get to the front and fight the Russian-backed separatists. As the war drags on, Ukraine claims their military is now in control and the volunteers have all been disbanded. But we tracked down some rogue volunteers still out there fighting, not prepared to hand over their weapons anytime soon.

Nobody is hiding there has been a problem in Ukraine with these bunch of extremists who were clearly a minority (check the elections results and see the irrelevant percentages they got at national UA elections). It’s not a good reason for invading that country, otherwise we should invade Russia because they have militias like Wagner and Kadirov guys who were and are often in conflict with official Russian army.

I can't believe this has been going on since 2014. I read that there are about 200,000 people who have died due to this conflict. So very sad.
Most died since February 24 2021. I’m thinking it’s closer to 300,000. With 25,000 dead civilians In Mariupol alone.

I lived in Belgium for 15 years, and I wish Ukraine and Russia followed example of settling Flemish-Valoon and Flemish-Dutch disputes: linguistically, legal residents should vote in referendum for being in Ukraine or RUSSIA, including exclaves and inclaves, etc. I.e., Crimea and other Russian speaking areas should allow their legal residentd to decide on their future. No war. Looks so easy, almost too easy to be true. I admire Belgians - they even allowed their German speaking community to be autonomous, with their language laws and education, etc. Shame on nationalists killing each other. Admittedly, it took decades for Belgians to achieve that. But Russians and Ukrainians should learn from their experience. Or, follow Czech-Slovak velvet divorce - both countries are friends, mutually allowing their kids to study in each other states for free, never requiring visas, mutually having residence and work permits for each others´ residents, etc. Perhaps it is too late, but, Ukrainians and Russians, look at Czechs and Slovaks, how they managed to separate but stay brothers and friends!

In the US its very common for men to "play soldier". They call themselves militias, but all they do is wear camo and carry guns in public, usually in protest of something. They don't fire their weapons and have no experience in war which is why we call them "play soldiers".

Cascadianow I agree that most militias in the US spend the majority of their time making asses of themselves at protests, etc. but I wouldn’t underestimate them. A lot of these guys are heavily armed and a little unstable, probably a bigger threat than most people assume

May be because they literally give their lives for Ukraine, without them country would already be destroyed and broke into pieces. But as we saw after 2014, politically they have no support in Ukraine, just about 1,5% want them to be in goverment.
And fyi ukrainian goverment was and may be still is very corrupted, they sold weapons and army before 2014, so there was no faith in them. That's why volunteer battalions were more popular in such radical patriotic circles. Today it's changing little step by step, and may be after war such people will rather go into regular army, because of salary, social pack, professional instructors and well equiped etc.

People who sit in the Kremlin consider negotiations only as an attempt to better prepare. They see weakness in the negotiations and simply wait until it will be possible to break through Ukraine and the countries of the West with the next offensive. How can you negotiate with an army of 500,000 on your territory? It seems to me that if Russia (the country with the largest nuclear arsenal in the world!) wants to discuss its security, it is not necessary to invade a neighboring country with its entire army.

In the future, they should. There should be a rule in international law stating that after the dust clears, whether it wins or loses, the leader of the invading nation should die. If the goals of the war are a big enough deal to the leader that the leader is willing to kill innocent civilians and troops on both sides, then it should be important enough that the leader is willing to die for it too.

The closest I’ve been to war was Benghazi in 2010 but that is nothing compared to the horrors the Ukrainian’s experience every day. You look in the eyes of some soldiers and realize, that deadness that you’re seeing in them, may never leave them again. Our experience as North Americans following the stories of our American and Canadian soldiers and the sorrows they experience is mitigated by them coming home to some sort of civility. Still there are wounds and disorders and disease carried back to their families and society to deal with, or not. Can you imagine when your country is the one destroyed and your dreams that have ended and your friends and families have been lost? I disagree. My countries newspapers post regularly photos of soldiers who look very photogenic, clean and happy. There were even photos of soldiers posing in front of a fireplace with their wife and children. When Yugoslavia was at war, people hadn't time ti smile and pose! There were actual concentration camps where people were sexually and violently abused, which were killed mercilessly and were held hostage without food and water. This wasn't that long time ago and nobody from the western media reported that much as of Ukraine. The Ukraine "sucked" the whole world in a global crisis that was never seen before and people are actually naively clapping and approving that we all freeze and die of hunger, because of one bloody country
