Two months after release on Disney+, let's finally talk about Disney's Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie! Personally, I didn't really like it. I still wonder if Sweet Pete's origin is a jab at Bobby Driscoll, the original Peter Pan actor who was dropped without warning when he hit puberty. He could find work after that and eventually became homeless.. He died a sad and lonely death at a young age after that.

One of the reasons I'm not watching the film is that I thought the villain backstory for Peter Pan was tasteless and heartless. I know Disney likes to make jokes about itself now but to tell the story of Peter Pan losing his job when he hit puberty and being moved to a life a crime is in poor taste. This is a tad close too the tragic story of child actor Bobby Driscoll who voiced and modeled for the Peter Pan cartoon. Upon turning 16 Bobby was also abandoned by the studio. He couldn't find work as an adult actor as he was labeled as a Disney child star. He eventually turned to drugs and at 31 was found dead, lying in a deserted tenement building. His body unclaimed for over a year until his mother tried to find him. It might be argued that not everyone knows the tragic story of the Peter Pan actor Bobby Driscoll but if this is true that makes the plot an in-joke, and a cruel one at that. Even Illumination's Despicable Me 3 was able to tell a story of a jobless child actor without connections to an actual tragic event.

I may be wrong so bare with me, but one of the main reasons I love Who Framed Roger Rabbit is because they're brand new character's, you don't have to know who they are to before hand to be interested in the story.

I think the expectations of modern films have dropped so low that an average one is now considered good. 20 years ago, this Chip & Dale reboot would have been considered a terrible film in the eyes of critics, but since it isn't total rubbish, it is in many eyes a good one.

Peter Pan’s backstory in this movie makes no sense because we don’t see any of the other toons aging
I think it should have been a better and funnier twist that he was originally a human that turned themselves into a cartoon. When he started aging he couldn’t afford a surgery to turn himself back into a human (since that would be so much more expensive than turning into a cartoon). So he started a crime syndicate to raise enough money. It would have been a better back story than the offensive one they came up with. 🤷🏻♀️
Except when they do and then suddenly don’t. The titular two meet in primary school as kids, grow up to start the show and then they just don’t age for the next 30 years.
Okay, so... Pete's evil motivation is dissatisfaction with his appearance.
He invents a machine that can change a toon's appearance.
Then he proceeds to not use it on himself?
Also it's kinda silly how the movie pretends that Chip and Dale haven't had careers stretching back decades before the Rescue Rangers cartoon. They're ten years older than Peter Pan is.
Add to that the fact that the kid who voiced and modeled for Peter Pan in the animated movie was fired once he started puberty, couldn’t get jobs with other companies because he was a “Disney kid” and then died of a drug overdose in his 30s. Disney is making fun of a guy whose life they ruined.
What’s more, why does he abduct famous toons to star in his bootleg movies if he’s going to morph them beyond recognition anyway? Why doesn’t he just abduct or even hire non-famous toons to star in them?
This movie felt less like a movie and more like a weird disconnected fanfiction AU made by a weirdo but if it got picked up by Disney

20 years ago Chip and Dale would have been seen on the level of mockery the first Space Jam and Back in Action (unfairly) got but since movie expectations have dropped significantly, frighteningly low since then this is considered good.
it's crazy how no one talking gadget and zipper being together and having kids when in the series she probably had a thing for chip and Dale which is werid
There’s also the fact that Gadget banged her own pet.
She should've wound up with Monty instead, at least they're the same species (unlike the chipmunks or _friggin' housefly_).
Because no one watched this movie to even discuss it (and no, putting it on in the background so you can browse your phone does not count as watching the movie), but if they did the movie itself makes it non-canon because Gadget and Zipper in the movie are not the actual characters, but the "actors" that play those characters. There's nothing to discuss other than the weirdness.

I think the most confusing thing about all this is that Chip is supposed to have been the popular one in the original show? Like, was it just me being obsessed with Dale and finding Chip kinda dull (when I was a kid at least). Like, I feel like straight comic their characters are already more popular than the "leader" type.

Besides all the things brought up in this film, the most baffling decision is to reduce Gadget’s presence to a glorified cameo. Let’s be honest, she was a big reason we were watching that show in the first place.

It's hard to find someone online who actually had an opposing opinion and perspective on the film that differs from everyone else. Honestly, I think Disney had strings pulled to get undeserved praise for years now. But aside from my conspiracies, it is shocking to see people actually say good things about this movie when it's just a hallow, mean spirited film with endless cameos and meme references. It makes me happy to know that some people like you can actually speak honestly about what this film really is and some of the issues this movie has. Hopefully within time more and more people will open their eyes and see that the movie was never as good as they claimed it to be when it first came out. We deserve better written movies with a real story and message behind the story that's worth while.

My thing is that you can immediately tell that the “2D” characters are just 3D models with a filter. It’s trying to do a roger rabbit, but that was actual 2d animation over live action and it still holds up to this day. This’ll age badly. It’s already aged badly.
The entire movie can be summed up with a line of said movie:

This is gonna be one of those movies people look back on and go "why tf did I like this?" calling it now.

None of the characters act like the Rescue Rangers characters, which begs the question of why this was even a Rescue Rangers movie to begin with.
Nostalgia bait. Same reason theyre all the craze over sequels and remakes. They have no confidence in new ips because even the recognized ips get doodoo fart returns because they keep screwing it up and shareholders dont like a studio already "down on its luck" taking a risk with a project noone has any prior attachment to.
I'll at least give them points for bringing 2D and live-action hybrids back. However, this whole 3D surgery BS honestly hurts my brain.

Peter Pan is probably the only Disney child/teen character I was never ever curious about imagining as an adult, and now thanks to this movie, that lack of want has only tripled. Thanks chip and dale movie, I will never get to un-picture Peter with post-pubescent stubble and beer gut again.
I loved the movie- but I was also a HUGE Rescue Rangers fan as a kid!
I can see how younguns would miss most of the jokes based on the character’s personalities and the old show plots.
And back in the 90’s there were TONS of bootleg fake versions of EVERY cartoon that looked off in weird ways. They are hard to find now, but that’s what a lot of the joke was for the main plot. Pretty much most of the jokes are based on things we would remember from the 90’s- early 00’s, and anyone born after ‘95 probably had little chance of getting them as the majority were visual (easy example- the villain roaring at the end and the streamer floats down - just like in the first Jurassic Park).
So, yeah. Us old folks and our nostalgia is why it has a great rating. 🤷♀️ 😂

I think you're underestimating how long cultural things can stay with us. I was born in 2000 but I also grew up with Rescue Rangers and weird fake versions of animated movies. One of the most popular youtubers in my country while I was in middle school had reviewing those fake animations as his thing!

Im sorry but I had bindged the show on disney plus with my sister after she was ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED by this film. As an aspiring storyboard artist and storyteller, she went off on how horrendous this film was. From comedy, to meta humor, to plot. I ended up catching her watching the original series this movie was based on and imma be real here, there is literally non of the OG series in this movie besides the characters. These characters are beyond out of character.
Major rescue rangers fan myself, albeit one that discovered it long after its original run. Personally, I find the movie to be an abomination. As a movie, I found it to just be bad. As a fan, it was insulting and so disconnected from the characters as they were in the show that I literally couldn’t find anything I really liked about it. It did make me hunt down a blu ray copy of the original series, so I guess that’s one good thing I can say about the movie.

Those who think DBZ abridged is the pinnacle of internet humor, and those who treated this movie like it was Sonic the Hedgehog 2.5 due to Ugly Sonic being here. I predicted on release that no one would remember this movie or care about it five months after it came out....I've been proven right, I think.

Yeah. I could only watch fifteen minutes before turning it off, the rest I’ve seen by proxy through reviewers. There wasn’t a single bit of appeal to be had.
The fact they tried to pass off mediocre cel shading as hand drawn animation, the way it didn’t follow outline of the show it shares a title with, they didn’t bring back the original voice cast except as glorified cameos (even though they’re all alive and still working), the tasteless reference to Bobby Driscoll, all the overused meta humour. If there was an award for undue praise and unearned acclaim, this movie would win without trying (which was already the case).

So let me get this straight the main plot is chip and dale trying to find Monty after he couldn’t pay his mafia cheese debt before he gets plastic surgery to act in crappy movies made my Peter Pan but old. Tell me if I’m wrong

Ever since Ready Player One came out, a lot of studios have been making movies where they try to cram as many IPs that they own into one movie, regardless of whether or not it makes sense for the overall plot and this uninspired slock of a movie is no different on that regard.

Ugh you’re right this movie is weird not good weird either. So why did Pete age? No one else did. They can get 3D rendered why doesn’t Pete? (Edit:oh it looked like he did in the end to be powerful but why not make himself pretty prior to that point?) Why does Ugly Sonic exist? Because someone created it? What if I animated some fan art Bowsette does that mean that she could just show up? What about Vtubers? Would their animated skin become sentient? I didn’t see the movie and maybe it’s Roger Rabbit rules where there are toons and they are alive from a different reality and they are cast for shows but if that is the case the aging thing throws me off.

There's one thing about this movie that NOBODY seems to be talking about...
The main villains of the story kidnap cartoon characters to turn them into bootleg versions of themselves. This movie is made by DISNEY. They are directly comparing copyright infringement to _human trafficking..._ Am I the only one who finds that kinda messed up? I mean, they pass it off as more of a joke, because bootleg movies are trashy and ridiculous, but it still feels kinda scummy to me. :/

Am I the only one who thought the cinematography was quite bad ? Like, of course the 2D CGI is bad but the overall look of the film is awful. The lightning never looks right, none of the shots are good they all look bad and I can't seem to explain why. It seems like every shit is overcrowded and badly coloured. Terrible.
i watched chip n dale rescue rangers once, and i thought it was a pretty decent movie. it has some goods and it has some of its bads, but in my opinion i think there is more bad than good in this movie. I really appreciate the people who worked hard to make this movie, but still i couldn't hide the fact that it was just plain and nothing new, although the mix of live-action, 3d, and 2d in this movie is quite interesting.
I never watched the Chip and Dale show, but my grandparents had the VHS tape of little mini adventures they did, but I can't remember what it was called. They duked out with Donald Duck on a apple farm in one part, and the last part had a cowboy guns blazin' story, the "Lone Chipmunks"
I honestly kinda thought that the fact they cast random famous people as voice actors kinda goes with the whole theme of the movie of criticising modern reboots. That's how I interpreted it but I might just be making excuses for bad casting/voice acting.
I think the reason so many people liked this movie is just because of the novelty of it... Like, there's a LOT of references and cameos in this movie, and they have live action, 3D animation, AND bits of 2D animation all in the same movie. Combine that with the powerful drug known as "nostalgia" and no wonder it did well.
At least the “ Alvin and the chipmunks “ movies and are better than this one 🤷🏽♀️

This movie is like Space jam 2, it has; a boring plot, a weird villain, bad humor and lame references. The animation is good and the voice acting is ok but the rest is awful! The fact that Pumba said the the viking '' Look at your dead eyes! '' is insulting. He has LESS emotions than the viking! This joke is not funny, she's just cruel. Also, putting ugly Sonic was so useless. Except saying '' Remember his first design. Wasn't he ridiculous! '' it had nothing to the movie. I'm so glad i never watch it! I only saw a few reviews, they are more creative and fun than the film 😄

I didn't mind the movie, enjoyed all the Transformers references in the movie but it honestly could have been better with the references.
Overall not a bad movie but smth I would put in the background for just noise, the movie was just bland.

I know it’s a dumb movie but I liked it. I predicted the story beats but I enjoyed it for the animation. Hated it for the plot though.
I think there were a lot of missed opportunities. That’s the worst part for me. So many ways to comment on the state of the current entertainment industry (with the CGI operations, exploitation of actors) and it kinda did that. But it always just teetered around it. While Rodger Rabbit was a flat out allegory for racism in Hollywood/America.
The movie is 9/10 in my eyes of holy light and smart gratefulness.
