What were your thoughts on Wish? I'd love to hear! P.S. A quick side note. I'm still working on my voice acting skills, and unfortunately I'm not quite at the level I'd like to be at yet. I wanted to add a spark of passion to this video, but I think I just came across as too angry. This is in no way meant to say anyone who likes these songs is stupid, or that they're not allowed to have their own opinion. In fact, I'd love to hear some arguments for why Wish is actually cleverer than I think. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you have a wonderful day!
Honestly, its just pathetic that THIS is what they make to ‘celebrate’ their 100th anniversary. It feels like they made this in a year, judging by the mediocre songs, terrible writing, lacklustre animation and the poor marketing. What a joke. What bugs me the most about Wish is the Villain…HE. ISN’T. EVEN. A. VILLAIN. He’s the true hero of the story and Disney *desperately* tries to gaslight the audience by making Magnifico seem “evil” because he doesn’t grant everyones wishes… *how…dare he?* But, y’know, this could’ve been excused if his villain song was fire, but it was objectively the worst one Disney has made yet. 🎶I let you live here for free and I don’t even charge you rent🎶 should never be lived down lmao.
Wish was just… There are so many words I want to say about it, but I will throw in one. Wish was atrocious. Y’know what? I think I’ll write villain songs for the Akatsuki instead. To restore my brain cells from listening to the Wish soundtrack.
This movie reminds me of the golden bolt's video about sega's near collapse during the early twothousands, he mentioned Peter Moore(who tatooed halo 2's release date on his arm), filmed a focus group meeting where asking"if a video game publisher was a relative or friend who would they be"? I quite:-"rockstar was the cool drunk uncle, e.a. was a jock, but what about Sega"?-"Yeah that's your grandad, he used to be cool, but even he can't remember why anymore". That latter one, is current Disney in a nutshell!
The way 'love you as one does' worked in the intiial song draft, because it was a love song between a literal STAR and a uman being, so the star wanted to love her like humans do...but when it's no longer the star signing and it's no longer 'love', but 'promise', it' just loses all context and the original meaning. They really couldn't be bothered to do another song smh
Exactly, it even would've inferred something about star boys character - that he wants to be human. That's more character than they put in any of these songs
Yeah, this video actually made that song even worse for me because I have Audio Processing Disorder and assumed it said elegant until I saw it written out here. There's some benefit in always assuming that if it doesn't make sense, I must have misheard it 😂
@@LauraWade-t2u This is so real 😆 Me with some of my favourite songs that sound amazing but years later I see the lyrics for the first time and go “oh…” lol
I actually like the line “eloquent dancers”. Consider “body language” and dance being the poetic/artistic use of that “language”. Therefore, being an eloquent dancer is someone who is masterful and fluent at “body language”. I don’t think the writers did this with any actual intention, but I don’t completely hate that line.
Congratulations! You managed to get through "this is the thanks I get" without laughing at "I let you live here for free and I don't even charge you rent"!
I remember the Frozen craze, I remember the Moana craze, I remember the Encanto craze, so it is abolutely baffling that they didnt put that kind of effort in for their 100 year anniversery film
one of my first thoughts when seeing these lyrics was literally "isn't this the same studio that wrote the near perfect soundtrack for moana and the sensation frozen?"
I love how she compared the writing to younger and younger people as the video goes on 😭 Goes from “moody teenager” to “sixth grader” to “six year old”
reminds me of jack stauber's "there's something happening" but like at least that guy has an excuse because the songs are generally quite weird and insane, what the hell was the excuse here
Eloquent dancers?! Are we sure that the person (or AI) writing this script didn’t just utterly fail at spelling “elegant” and spell-check changed it to eloquent? Because flowers being elegant dancers totally makes sense.
@@turnip_arts it was actually "effortless and eloquent" but if it were elegant, that would be so bad...unfortunately i wouldn't have been surprised if they did do that
I have a pet peeve for whenever a story set in a fantasy/medieval world overuses modern slang or phrases (unless the theme or frame of the story is modernity), and every song is just that
Same here. Anachronisms yank the audience-whether or not they’re history nerds-right out of the story and its world. They’re jarring, they’re lazy, and as a wise commenter once wrote, they age like fine milk.
That's what got me upset about "I let you live here for free, and I don't even charge you rent." It's not just the "you already said that tho," it's the fact that it's a fantastic setting, I *never* expected to hear "rent" being used. That's such a modern feel, especially since you think of apartments and landlords, not at all a king in a kingdom with his subjects.
For the “a potion, a spell, a summon, a curse. Anything to make that light reverse!” May I suggest: “a potion, a spell, a hex or a curse. Anything to make that light disperse!”
I mean... Gilbert & Sullivan used lyrics like that all the time. Except, you know, they actually understood cadence. Like... am I the only one who still gives a crap about Gilbert & Sullivan in 2024?
As someone whose mother language isn't English and loves a ton of songs from English-speaking countries. I can feel your pain. Dubbing in other languages in hard, but dubbing songs in other languages, is a NIGHTMARE. So many songs have been destroyed because the localizers aren't professionals, just because the distributors won't pay enough, and -surprise!- professionals happen to be expensive.
I am not a lyricist, just a language nerd who passed Cambridge English C1 as a non-English native... but if WISH did one thing, it was to make me believe I can write better
I have English as my second language, I have no music background and I can only write basic poems... I'm pretty sure I can still write better songs for wish than this 😭
but thats all you have, a certification probably from an online website. 🤨 and if you were better, maybe you could have been hired by disney.. oh you were not. 🙄
It’s been a month and I haven’t seen a single wish song blow up on TikTok. Do you guys remember when Encanto came out and everyone went crazy over „we don’t talk about Bruno“?
@sparksparkleLin Manuel Miranda wrote the music for that movie! He’s the creator of Hamilton and also wrote the songs for Moana! He’s brilliant when it comes to making songs, maybe Disney didn’t want to pay the price to hire him this time lol
@@djmutt2000 If I was given incubation and time, I could probably write something better than this. To me, it seems like this movie had very experienced songwriters, but Disney treated them like crap and expected songs to be written in T-minus 10 seconds. People don't show their best work in depressing work environments.
Idk if someone already said it, but the music "At all cost" feels like it's a romantic song 'cause it was supposed to be a duet between Asha and the star, who could shapeshift and turn into a star boy who was supposed to be Asha's romantic interest. I remember even hearing a version with diferrent lyrics and in this context , but i'm not sure how much it's true. Thou it seems likely with disney's recent decisions
The fact that they didn't make the star a shapeshifter star boy simultaneously upsets me and relieves me, soley because I have an oc who is already that 😂
It was. Go read an interview with the composers : Julia LITERALLY said that since there was no love song she wanted to make one that as a standalone could be played at a wedding You are absolutely correct. That's the whole point of it
it's pretty obvious that At All Costs was a love song for the end of the movie they last-minute reworked because they didn't want to scrap it. And they don't even rework it properly, they refer to the wishes as "you" as if they were a person?? 'If someone tried to hurt you" like it's a ball what
@@brainless_mastermind defo, it kinda makes sense for Asha because she is specifically talking about her grandfather's wish, but for the king it makes 0 sense, it's kinda crazy no one bothered to rework the lyrics even slightly to amend that
To be fair, the AI theory is a strong one. I refuse to believe nobody clowned about the line "I let you live hеre for free. And I don't even charge you rent" during Magnifico song. It's impossible. Great analysis.
People laugh about the Lin Manuel Miranda thing and him being overused, forgetting Alan Menken composed for NINE Disney films total. And Yeah, LMM does overuse patter and insinuating raps in his songs, but at least he's a decent lyricist and an actual Broadway musical artist. Having a pop writer with zero clue of how to write a story through song was a glaring mistake. Also. This movie is supposedly set in the 1200s (disney implies "before all other disney movies," But Hercules, Mulan, Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone all expressly take place before that era and Lion King, Aladdin, and Moana could all be set before then as well. I digress.) In the 1200s, there was ZERO concept of "Outer Space" or what stars were, photosynthesis, the Big Bang or any of the other space references made in the movie. The sheer anacronym is so glaring that it drives me nuts. Moana didn't have a word for "horizon" until after she met Maui, because her people had lost the context. Maui is immortal and has the context for it through wayfinding, and they found a way to express that passing down of knowledge through song in a freaking reprise of How Far I'll Go with subtlety! This movie just bashes you over the head with poorly written overt references that make no sense.
I guess LMM just has a really distinct style and people get tired of it a lot easier. But yes, he would have been way better for this movie than any pop writer. I love that about outer space, I didn't know that's when they set this movie
I fully agree with the criticism on this movie's songs, but I don't think the comment of "why did they hire a pop star?!?" Makes sense on its own. Phil Collins wrote (I think?) the songs for Tarzan and Brother Bear. Would he not fall under the same comment? I think the critique on this movie and its atrocious song lyrics stands without any comment on the writer's origin. @@brainless_mastermind
also people forget LMM has fallen far since his days of in the heights and hamilton lol. those two shows are both lyrically amazing, the scuttlebutt? ehh..not so much.
YES THANK YOU I like his musical and what he's written for Moana and Encanto, but I feel like Disney, in the state it is now, is using him/his name as a crutch, and I hope he can pull away and do other things. 😅
@@MickusTheDutch1991 the songs in brother bear suck balls tho. they state everything the characters r going thru way too literally, zero artistry or evocative language at all
Which goes to show how out of touch these execs are that NOBODY seemed to notice they were basically making a meme, and not a good one. It reminds me of a tv network here in Mexico, they recently rebranded and they're called "Nmás" which means "N-plus", but in Spanish it sounds like "enemas", you know, like the liquid that goes up the anus. 💀
7:40 instead of "eloquent" I think they meant to put ELEGANT💀lord its such a simple word change, this is the first time ive heard that line from this song and I think i died a little inside
The only argument I could make for "eloquent" is that dance is sometimes thought of as a language, just like music. But even then... huh? It's out of context. What makes them eloquent? What is their eloquence conveying that regular-ass flowers couldn't?? Were the flowers supposed to start singing their message after that? Elegance makes more sense because flowers sway in the wind, the connection isn't so far-fetched. Eloquence, though? I'm just... my brain... it hurts......
it means clearly expressing or indicating something just as you can see in the video, the second definition that was ignored. Eloquence doesn’t have to be words. A dancer can be eloquent. A flower can express like… whimsy or something. Here it was just a buzzword though
There's something particularly disgusting about the line "when it comes to the universe we are all shareholders" It just has absolutely 0 business being there. We are at a point where corporate d**k riding has become an active part of the movies they make
No kid knows what a shareholder is, like, who are they even talking to???? No average middle class worker thinks about that word on a daily basis, this is some weird Hollywood, big business projection on their part, like?????
People sometimes get frustrated when Lin Manuel goes and does another musical pop song that has that "Lin Manuel" vibe on the rythm and lyrics. But at least Lin Manuel knows how to write his branch of songs
I'm surprised so many people here talk bad about Lin, I love all his songs and they were all big hits too! (especially "We don't talk about Bruno" and "How far I'll go")
Probably my least favorite thing about “This is the thanks I get” is the fact that the chorus just repeats the song’s title 4 times in a row. It feels like Julia Michaels was given 5 seconds to write the song’s chorus, and she just used the first thing that came to mind
@@bananasinfrench That's just pathetic. Say what you will about the quality of Julia Michaels' work, but there was no way in hell she was going to churn out something good in such a short amount of time. That *rarely* turns out well! Disney should've taken their time with "Wish". Instead, they rushed it out just in time for their 100th anniversary. 😒
She prolly did. As much as I hate the songs, I don't think it's all JM's fault considering Disney changed the plot like 100X. At All Costs was meant to be a love duet, I'm A Star was supposed to be sung by star (not the animals), and the villain was going to be a duo. With all the revisions, I wouldn't be surprised if she resorted to putting vague and banal lyrics out of fear of having to revise again.
IM SO UPSET AT THE FACT THEY WROTE “I let them live here for free and I don’t even charge them rent” and “I got these genes from outer space”. Here’s some help Disney; IF THEY LIVE THERE FOR FREE THEY AREN’T BEING CHARGED RENT. I refuse to watch another new Disney movie unless it’s good. Next time they get a soundtrack as good as The Hunchback of Notre Dame, I’ll be in on it.
“I let the people stay here, and I won’t even charge for rent” would fit better. Honestly anything would. Like they could’ve also done it “and if people wish to stay here. I don’t even charge for rent.“ It even uses the name of the movie, tying back to wishes and how he doesn’t gaf. How him letting them stay in the kingdom, and taking their wishes is enough in his opinion to fulfill his duty as a great king, and that’s why hes the best. He doesn’t think he needs to do more to be deserving of their love. It would’ve synced a lot better rhythm wise too The whole song was him going see how benevolent and kind I am, while showing us that he’s exactly the opposite. But the thing that makes him evil isn’t even that evil. He doesn’t think all wishes should be granted and he’s RIGHT! They should’ve made the taking wishes ploy extend his life force. So it’s purely for greed and cz he’s power hungry and not an antihero. It’s a lot more evil than creating a place where everyone’s at peace and the worst thing about it is they don’t have any passions. Like it’s bad- but it doesn’t justify making him a Disney villain level bad imo
Also the line "I'm always here if you need to vent" I get they're trying to be gen z and quirky but why is a Disney villain we're supposed to be intimidated by talking about VENTING? It just sounds wrong and I'm annoyed that they would try to use that word. A villain trying to convince themselves and the audience that they're good should be talking about the good they're doing with their powers, not listening to you complaining about your shitty work day.
There's a rumor going around that the movie only had THREE months to be made. Literally from just pre to post. ONLY THREE MONTHS. I still mostly have a hard time believing it. But... Not only does the movie not help this case. (It FEELS like it was only made in a few months) But, apparently, in the frozen 2 documentary. They slipped that they only got SIX months. So... It's REALLY hard to not believe in this type of rumors.
@@lilac3266 I honestly hope that was the time they were given. But the more you think about everything. There's NO WAY all of the bad stuff in the film was never fixed in all that time. They could have polished the development of the king and his transition from being arrogant or pure evil. (Just look at all the other classic villains) The music is pretty and the singers were great. But I agree that some lines in the lyrics feeling like they needed a few extra drafts. The potential is there, but it feels like they didn't have the time to do any tweaking.🥺
i wouldnt be surprised if the writing and recording period at least was only 3 months. some marvel movies like the last dr strange were written in only 2 weeks. 2 fucking weeks. not to mention that disney's method involves constantly changing the plot and rewriting every time they look over the film
@@Mars-dw2zc I think the worse part about that particular film is that NO ONE in production apparently saw Wanda vision. So giving time to polish their drafts is the LEAST of their problems.
@Mars-dw2zc I wrote a fanfic in about ... four months. That is near constant writing for hours. Apparently that is to much time for Disney. Maybe I should apply to be a Disney writer. Lol.
"When have you heard of a wind pulling someone in?" H.P. Lovecraft's "Shadow Out of Time." The monsters create a wind effect that feels like it's blowing, but it sucks you back towards the creature generating. So, I guess the movie is saying that the subject of this song is some kind of cosmic horror. Also: What is pain? Baby, don't hurt me! Don't hurt me no more!
@@EsteemedReptilesame lmao. I remember watching it and thinking it would have been an actual interesting thing if they made the star a twist villain, have it manipulate the main character who just thinks she's on some heroic quest. But oh well of course Disney would never put effort into writing something anymore
I had to go listen to "My Lullaby" from Lion King 2 to make myself feel better after this. It's an amazing villain song, it always gets glossed over, and it does the whole "lets add some quirky adlibs in there" REALLY WELL while keeping the cadence of the song, telling a story, and feeling like an actual villain song.
One minor point: 13:54 In some games that I play, "a summon" is slang for something you summon. So arguably the songwriters were going for the slang, but of course there's the context of the rest of the song
The more I listen to this soundtrack (via videos like this- I can't handle listening without an intellectual barrier) the more frustrated I get. I can't believe Disney has fallen so far. What happened to hiring broadway songwriters? I guess they tried with Lin Manuel Miranda and then gave up?? So exhausting and disappointing, honestly. That fucking movie about the yetis had better music than this
"we need a line to show how everybody owns a part of the universe" said the story director guy who doesn't know anything that isn't really corporate responded with "uhhh may i suggest "when it comes to the universe we are all shareholders"" the story director responded with "perfect send it to the voice actors"
I explained this to my dad and he suddenly started telling my mom “here I are, just wanted to let you know” and I suddenly started howling with laughter
Asha's verse in At All Costs honestly sounds like whenever artists who speak one language translate their songs into an English cover and it comes out clunky and with weird emPHAsis on the wrong syLLAble and so you listen to it and go "oh, this wasn't written in English." BUT IT WAS.
What if we combined the worst lines from all the songs into the Worst Song Ever: When it comes to the universe we're all shareholders It lets us live here for free and doesn't even charge us rent It gave us these genes from outer space It pulls me in like some kind of wind And I throw caution to every warning sign What's pain when I look at flowers in the wind They're such effortless and eloquent dancers The leaves eat the sun Don't ever make that light reverse SOLAR! I swear on my response We're here for all your question marks I'd think this little fun allegory untrue I don't see how that could happen 'Cause it gets me excitatory I'd be the first to volunteer Henry if someone tried to hurt you Peep the name, 'cause here I are, I'm a star Ungrateful much? Are you sure you're not the prob?! I'm not petulant! Felt this, no I haven't The disrespect I just underwent I've seen too many bad things that I can't keep count But now I'm taking in all the star exposure The lengths I'll go there's no amount But if you just see the mushrooms then you'll understand It's genetics! So that's where the balls of gas come from? No way I could explain it Boom! Did we just blow your mind? It might sink in in the morning But I'll never dream like I used to do So I make this wish for: a summon
(Skip to the end if you can't be asked to read this) I don't hate either Wish Or Wonka, I enjoyed Wonka more but Wish was decent for me as well 😅 I had the choice to see wonka or wish in cinemas and one at home (find websites online). I chose to watch wish at home and we saw Wonka in cinemas - best choice ever. As a brit it had British comedians, some from childhood shows I used to watch. Wish was decent, a nice film. I enjoyed it, but it didn't feel like a 100 year celebration. Just.. your average Disney family film (not bad, just mid). Tbh I enjoyed Elemental a tad bit more (it was also adorablee). Tbh, Wonka's songs could be better but I accept literal slop so it didn't bother me as much. None made me wanna grate my ears off so that's a plus Anyway, there's my rambling, have a nice day 😅
@@just_a_silly_weenie008 my family saw Wonka in theaters (and haven't seen wish at all yet), and we absolutely enjoyed the movie. Based on all the reviews, I also think Wish seems mid, but on that same note, Wonka is also kinda mid. Neither does anything really extraordinary, and my mom believes Wonka is formatted to be a Broadway show. But Wonka seems to work better, not just because the songs are better worded and (imo) performed better, but even though it relies on a lot of suspended disbelief, it still seems more coherent and you can follow along without much issue. Wish... I think... Doesn't have that same coherence. Not only does the songs seem confusing, but the story and world building is a tad too vague to help accurately portray the character motives.
@sapphireshineauthor I do have a preference for musicals, but I just wondered why Wish chose songs that felt a bit generic. They could've used Lin Manuel Miranda but didn't man :( And to add, the story was okay but the dead dad bit came out of nowhere and wasn't told to us before that. Storytelling is hard, but rip
I am a firm believer that these songs were written by AI, even if this is proven false, I refuse to hear it. These lyrics are like AI art, it looks good at first, but the further you look into it, you start seeing 7 fingers on one hand.
This reminded me of when I just went on a forum (in my language) to asked about buying a specific model of second-hand car. I want HUMAN opinions, with HUMAN insight. And I kid you not, someone replied with "let's see what the ChatGPT said about buying used cars...." And this kind of comments are everywhere. Like what the hell Why? Why use AI? It's ridiculous. AI have it's time and place where it's appropriate to use, but not this one. Another story was an overall 5-star review of a home appliance product, main reason "you don't need a frickin app for it".
It's a minor point, but one thing that bothered me about 'You're A Star' is suddenly the turtle gets into some detailed Astrophysics. On a medieval-ish mediterranean island, they know that Nebulae give birth to stars? They know that Nebulae are collections of intergalactic matter? They know there are Nebulae? Also HERE I ARE!!!!!
As I said, At All Cost could've worked SOO much better as a love song. And I'm gonna add some ideas I thought of when you try to insert this as a love song. This is also gonna be my small take on Star Boy's personality, but the main idea is the chemistry. 2:56 - As awkward the phrasing is, I think it would fit Star Boy well. Since he is a celestial being, it might be his first encounter to such feeling inside. He doesn't know how to describe it well but is trying his best to convey it. 3:22 - Like I said, he's a celestial being, a STAR. Maybe he could've had an internal conflict and desired to be with Asha, to become human and feel all these emotions and make memories alongside her. To LOVE as how one does to their partner. See what I did there? 3:564:18 - Asha's feelings towards Star Boy. This feeling is also new to her and is trying to convey it the best she can too. Not only that, but she might be aware that Star Boy might have to go back to where he belongs once he's done helping her. So in a way, she loves him but at the same time it hurts to love him since he'll be leaving soon. 4:52 - Asha's fear of Star Boy getting hurt or being used by Magnifico. He is literally a STAR, something that can grant wishes. If Magnifico is using a book or whatever(never saw the movie) to get the wishes, imagine what he could do if he gets his hands on Star Boy. Not only that but it might be physically taxing on him since he is, in my take, made from wishes. The embodiment of hapiness and desire. Asha's afraid of losing him to Magnifico, so it sounds panicky. 5:21 - I had to look at the rest of the lyrics here. "Felt this no I haven't" Asha trying to understand her feelings and why is she thinking this way but realizes it's all so new and unfamiliar to her. "I hope it would be all right to stay right here beside you" Asha wishing to be with Star Boy despite their circumstances. Were the lyrics separated after "I hope"? Yes, but that doesn't I won't try to connect them. And two bonuses for fun: -In the demo, "Promise as one does" was originally "Love you as one does" and if you read my earlier statement for that line, hits hard. -"If happiness was a tangible thing, it would be you" In my take I said that Star Boy is the embodiment of hapiness since he's a star. And is in PHYSICAL FORM. And yet he told ASHA that line. My whole summary for this? I raise my finger high to you Disney, for this could've been a wonderful song that conveyed their emotions and character so well if you didn't f**k up.
Dang you had me with star boys lines, those definitely make a lot more sense in that context. I love that it gives him a feeling of naivete. I feel like rhythmically and purely functionally, Ashas lines could still have used a rewrite, but you're so right, this could have been a really incredible romance, what a shame dude smh
@@brainless_mastermind honestly the first time I heard this song I was confused on why Asha's verse was so out of place. From a story standpoint, basically me rewriting Wish, it would show how different or nervous Asha is. And no, not the "I'm not like the other girls" or adorkable type, I mean when you're the only who gets you, but no one else does (that feeling hurts). The slight fast pacing of her part is symbolizing her nervousness in dealing with these feeling and to mirror her (rewritten) character, a bit nervous and shy. But as an aspiring writer, that's my only view on how they could've made sense with her pacing. I am not a musician nor lyricist so i have no idea on how to fix her verse.
At this point, it just feels as if Star Boy was removed from Wish at the last minute. I feel that it is also evident in Asha’s design. Some people didn’t like that her dress was purple, because Rapunzel already had a purple dress. For me though, I think it was meant to be purple because of Star Boy. When you think of a star, you also think of the color yellow, which is a pretty dominant color in his color scheme, and everyone was taught at some point that yellow and purple are complimentary colors. Basically, I think that Asha’s dress was chosen to be purple because it is the complementary color of yellow, which is Star Boy’s color. I also cannot help but think that Asha and Star Boy would have probably followed the “opposites attract” romantic trope, considering their colors.
My theory is "At All Costs" was an SATB quartet between Magnifico, Amaya, Star, and Asha. It explains the verses being completely different and all the melody changes. You can even hear Chris Pine jump from his natural baritone to a tenor midway through his verse when the melody changes. @@tc4331
@@damisnap3452it was a love song between Asha and a scrapped character we call "Star Boy". Star Boy was Star's original concept but as I stated, he was scrapped and we got Star Kirby.

Omg great video. Two lines worth mentioning. “I'm past dipping my toes in but I'm not, no, I'm not past diving in.” Ummm what does that even mean. Also surprised by the lack of “I let you live here and I don’t even charge you rent” slander. Great video though! SOLAR!
Lol thank you so much!! 🤣🤣 Yeah I felt like that line had been done over enough by other people. Making this was so hard because there are so many lines that I could go off about and I had to cut out a lot of stuff so it would be a reasonable length
They had such a winning idea here, I mean your subjectmatter is WISHES and STARS! That's the most inherently romantic crap ever! You can make so many lyrical motifs alluding to space imagery. The coldness of the void, light and warmth, the brilliance of the cosmos, stuff about the infinite possibilities of the universe and how every day is something amazing to strive for. You can write so many great songs about people shining or burning and how that contrasts the people and things around them, and all of it would tie back to your central idea effortlessly! Instead they were like "Here's a Star. It's going to sing about how flowers dance eloquently." Okay...... Cool..... But if this song is going to do fuck-all for the plot then why can't you at least tie it to the others with some coherent theme or imagery? This hurts extra hard as a fan of Revue Starlight. Not the best anime, but as a musical battle series it does a lot of stuff I love. And one of the biggest things is it motifs itself around wanting to be "the top star" and all the imagery you can have with that. Junna isn't just determined, the lyrics say she's BURNING, which implies strength but also a struggle. She's not "shining" like how the lyrics describe the main lead, trying to become a Star is taking everything she has and the visuals of the lyrics emphasize the recklessness of that. She's not in control of things, she's angry and desperate. Which then gets contrasted with the much stronger Maya Tendou whose lyrics frame herself as a Goddess that 'sits on a heavenly throne' above the others and 'Shines' with brilliance. She's not just above the main lead, she IS celestial. She doesn't WANT to be a Star. In the framing of the song, she JUST IS a Star! You see what I'm getting at, right? These are all different ways to look at the same idea and by using different personifications for a Star it can frame the characters in different ways. Why aren't the flowers 'shining' as they move? Why isn't the town 'twinkling' with activity? Why aren't the animals 'aglow' with life as Magnifico 'burns' with delight to contrast all these other beautiful things with his harmful attitude? You have an obvious lyrical motif! USE IT!!!
I don't usually reply to comments, but I totally didn't expect to see a Revue Starlight fan here (or anywhere tbh)! Revue Starlight is an amazing series in basically every way, musically, visually, and metaphorically. Instead of watching this Wish crap, people should be watching the underrated MASTERPIECE that is Revue Starlight.
Not really related, but the webcomic Space Boy does a great job playing around with space in terms of mental health and later romance. It's got physical editions too and I highly recommend it!
Seriously. It is the meaning of fluff, with no substance. “So your dust, is my dust? Fantastic!” Is Asha’s journey discovering her purpose in life? Is this about finding the meaning of life? How life is all connected? No. These animals telling Asha they are all stars do not aid her in her quest to stop Magnifico at all. It is useless.
"we are all our own origin story" like tf does that even mean. on top of that I can't even say this sentence properly without getting my tongue in fifty knots

Sorry, it’s a bit hard to grasp, so let me reiterate: you... are cool! Insane, right? How does this info change your life, make you feel in your place in the grand cosmos? Freaky, huh? Here, if you’e having trouble understanding, just look at this splotch of paint on the wall and all will click into place: you... are cool. BOOM, mind blown, huh? Okay, Imma just say it one more time just in case you didn’t get the memo - you are-- Bleh, that’s this song in a nutshell. It irks me so much, there’s almost zero substance to it.
At 4:28 the fact is that they originally had like this magic Starboy I believe who Asha was going to fall in love with, and so “At All Costs” Was originally made for them. But then, they scrapped the boy and then made this song go to Magnifico and Asha about the wishes. Wanting to protect them “At All Costs”. We literally could’ve had a villain couple too! I know concepts are usually not really final, but like they scrapped ANYTHING that could’ve made this movie better.
You mean Howard Ashman...Menken primarily writes music, not lyrics. he has written lyrics for his own music, but that never was great. Ashman was his BEST partner, period. I will die on that hill. Schwartz comes pretty close behind, but even Menken has fallen a bit far.
@@jenniferhiemstra5228 Hoo boy, you're gonna have a heart attack once you realise that Howard Ashman drew heavy influence from Gilbert & Sullivan, who were known for using anastrophe, a.k.a. "Yoda speak", in their operas.
One thing that really bothers me about Wish's soundtrack is the fact that the characters almost never reference what the frick they are talking about. With "Welcome to Rosas" and "This Is the Thanks I Get?" being exceptions, no song is allowed to be specific on its wording. In "This Wish", for example, Asha wishes for "something better than this". In "At All Costs", neither Asha nor Magnifico ever say the word "wish". Without the context of the movie, you would never know what they are promising to protect; it actually sounds like they are singing to each other. Even when you look at Disney's previous musical, Encanto, it wasn't like that. Isabela sings about growing plants because she just discovered she can make more than flowers. "Waiting on a Miracle" references the powers of some of the Madrigal's. "We Don't Talk About Bruno" gives us exposition about a character who hasn't shown up yet, foreshadows the importance of his prophecy, and also explores other characters, like Pepa, Dolores and Isabela. ALL IN ONE SONG. The only song you could argue contains generic lyrics is "Surface Pressure". Disney clearly wanted the soundtrack of Wish to be removed from the context of the movie. They wrote the most generic lyrics ever in an attempt to make people connect with the songs. But it's so weird from a writing standpoint when the characters in a musical don't actually sing about what is going on in the plot.
Even Surface Pressure has a mention of pressure coming from her family.. that's more than Wish gets. Also I don't think some less specific songs in a musical are a bad thing, I just think there's gotta be a balance. I ADORE I See The Light from Tangled but it wouldn't be as strong of a song if we didn't also get plot specific songs like the Mother Knows Best reprise near it.
i write poetry and songs in my past time, and i gotta say that the vagueness of some of the songs is really accurate. i struggle w making my writing too vague sometimes, it seems that it was the problem here too. they seemed to have been going for two things at once- super qUiRKy modern pop music with elegant and dreamy like words which ended up mixing terribly together. they shouldve gone either full pop modern or old classic, and tbh i think they shouldve gone classic for their 100 yr anniversary and bcuz we're talking abt *stars* that are supposed to be these ethereal, gorgeous and bright beings.
I keep thinking about Taylor Swift when people talk about generic pop songs. Like even her most generic songs like "Shake it Off" has some kind of story element. "My ex man brought his new girlfriend..." Like that's more specificity than Wish's whole soundtrack.
Like when was I first listening to it I thought that Magnifico was singing to Amaya and that Asha was singing to Sabino. The song would be alr in that instance, but making it so that they were singing about the wishes is the stupidest thing ever, and this movie honestly made the whole concept of wishing super cringey and corny. Even though I don't like him, I understand why people prefer Starboy to regular Star in their rewrites. At least a love song between the him and Asha makes more sense.
If you’re interested in the art of writing musical theater lyrics, Sondheim’s “Finishing the Hat” might be an interesting place to start. He breaks down the lyrics of all the songs he’s written and talks about what he would do differently if he had the opportunity to rewrite them.
@@brainless_mastermind I have looked into the German version of "This Wish" and while the cadence is still bad (they were bound by the original song), the lyrics are more coherent with the original meaning left intact and they corrected "throw caution to every warning sign" as "Und ich schlage jede Warnung in den Wind" (throw warning/caution to the winds). "Is this the Thanks I Get" also corrected "I'm passionate, I'm not petulant" to "Bin ehrgeizig, ich beschwer mich nicht" ("I'm ambitious, I don't complain") and "A potion a spell a summon a curse, anything to make that light reverse" to "Ein Mittel, ein Bann, ein Schwur oder Fluch? Irgendwas, damit man dieses Buch" ("a remedy, a ban, an oath, or a curse, anything to make this book work"). But unfortunately they kept the "I let you live here for free and don't even charge you rent" line ("Ihr wohnt alle umsonst hier nicht mal Miete zahlt ihr dafür") "You're a Star" unfortunately couldn't be saved. The song is only slightly less incoherent in German than it was in English. It corrected the "eloquent dancers" line to "Warum lassen Blumen sich vom Wind wie Tänzer wiegen und tragen?" (Why do flowers let themselves be swayed and carried by the wind like dancers?) and changed that awful "we're all shareholders" line to "Denn wir teilen diese Welt und sind ein Teil vom Ganzen" ("Because we share this world and are part of the whole.") The "allegory" line becomes "Hier ist ein kleines Gleichnis zu Ende Da klatsch ich gleich in die Hände" (here is where my parable ends, I clap my hands). It also added new mistakes like - "We're here for all your question marks" became "the good is within your grasp" and "see that's where all the balls of gas come from" became "it doesn't surprise me the gas sometimes smells." So basically the Germans tried to save the soundtrack, but even they could only do so much.
What awed me more about the "we eat the leaves, and they eat the sun" line, was that those are rats... Those are rats eating the leaves! RATS DON'T EAT LEAVES!
They also showed raccoons in the forest, but raccoons are native to North America and are not naturally found in Europe. Also those red & white spotted mushrooms are poisonous and hallucinogenic. Maybe that's how the songs were written. Disney put *literal* magic mushrooms in a kids' movie
The demo version of At All Costs WAS a romance song! Instead of "Leave you here? I don't wanna. I wanna *_love you_* as one does. I, I will protect you at all costs." I still think the song isn't great because the imagery in the male voice is positive yet INCREADIBLY _PASSIVE_ where what he's singing about is doing all the work and he's just observing it and wants to continue observing it, which doesn't go along with how STRONG a stance "I will protect you, I will keep you safe, at all costs." And the female verse's lyrics are SO AGGRO (and clunky) of negative imagery and word-assosiation like "pain" "never" "fight" but made positive with more negative words like "wouldn't" "can't." "haven't." that that it juxtaposes the _passiveness_ of the first verse and makes it kinda weird in that dynamic, but then her verse still ends weirdly passive/insecure by saying "I hope it'd be alright to stay right here beside you." Like you just said you'd FIGHT in ways they can't IMAGINE if something even THINKS of hurting them. Then you get all shy like 'oh gosh, would it be okay if I'm beside you. I mean, if it's okay with you, that this 👉👈' It's SO WEIRD. And as a singer, Ending a song on the word "coSTS" with that CURSED AS HELL "SSSs--T-ssSSS" sound, AND IN A DUET!! That's EVIL! Ss and Ts are the weirdest sounds to end on, and combining them like that is even WORSE because Ss are easy to drop, whistle, sound like a snake on, and Ts have to be HIT, and to get more than one person to hit it at the same time is a conscious effort, and then CAPPING IT OFF WITH ANOTHER S, Oh kill me now. Journey to the Past is fine ending lines with Past, Vast, Last, Fast, because those ending sounds you can make sound good, espeically as a solo. But a ROMANTIC DUET where the sweeping chorus has this horrible stutter ending every other line is HORRIBLE picking. This song is weird as hell.
YESS, "I hope it would be alright to stay right here beside you" was one of the lines I had for contradicting tone but I skipped it for time lol. Ashas verse is so weird, this whole movie just hurts my head
I think that’s what I’ve been struggling with too, especially in drawing my animatic. It’s can be taken very literally and at face value it’s easy to forget how these two dynamics clash in the same song.
I'm actually suprised Disney didn't have Linn Manuel write the soundtrack again, considering how successfully he wrote the soundtracks for Moana and Encanto. Look at songs like "How far i'll go", "You're welcome", "Shiny", "Surface Pressure", "We don't talk about Bruno", and how much people loved them. This guy alone probobly could have saved the movie. I honestly only see 2 reasons Disney didn't hire him. Either Disney didn't want the movie to be good, so they didn't waste their time, or Linn knew how terrible the movie would be, and he didn't wanna waste his time on this garbage after seeing what happened after the Little Mermaid.
or they wanted to save as much money as possible and Miranda was too expensive for them or they thought they could get away with trying to copy his style instead of just having him work on it again whatever the reason, it just didn't work
@@mxveewz Thats what I was saying, they didn't care about making the movie good, so they didn't waste their money, and they tried to copy his style anyways but failed.
If they copied his style and failed maybe it'll leave a mark on them to not repeat such BS again because it's leaving everyone who watches this movie a bad taste in their mouth
i think they just wanted to get this movie out as soon as possible and didn’t think that any good songwriters would have time to write decent lyrics. the animation doesn’t even look completed, like a barely half-rendered project.
THANK YOU FOR POINTING OUT THE MISUSE OF ELOQUENT IN I’M A STAR!!! Despite how bad the songs in Wish are, I honestly like most of them, as flawed as they are. Probably because, like the rest of the movie, there’s potential for it to be good, they just needed a couple more drafts cuz this feels like first or second draft material. But that one line in I’m a Star bothers me so much because they could easily just say elegant instead!!!!
@@Meimoons sadly I am not. A lot of cast members who worked in that movie confirmed it. Among other things… They have not said whether AI was used but I would not be surprised. Especially cause not only Disney hired activists to make the movie but the idiots had no idea how to animate and the people who had experience were powerless to do anything cause if they tried to help they were at best reprimanded and at worst fired. But hey, that’s what happens when you hire activists to make your movies instead of actual professionals.
My ointment to how painfully underwhelming and unfinished the lyrics is to just watch how foreign dubs does the lyrics, like the Danish one actually made me understood the songs and idk if its intended or not😂
That's great 🤣 I wonder if any of the translators were like "we can translate a better song than this" and turns out the translated versions are actually way more rhythmic and tonally consistent than the ogs
@@brainless_mastermind "At all costs" in European Spanish solves every issue with cadence, even the freakin' "I, I-I will protect you" (I'm surprised you didn't mention they put 3 syllables and 3 different notes in a one-letter word. Insane.) Also, "I'm a star" in Catalan (a language from Spain) has crazy good rhymes, everything rhymes with everything and even has room for orthographical jokes ("pretty" and "old" are written "belles" and "velles", but pronounced exactly the same, so there's a verse saying "with B and V, b/velles", referring to stars, and you can "hear" both words). It's a shame that I have to look for translations for better versions of the original concept.
the German translation is somehow even worse than English, and that's saying something :c no rhythm left at all because German is generally longer and they just tried to squeeze all the words in...
Disney was capable of such fine shows like Gravity Falls, DuckTales (2017), and The Owl House......they canceled them all; They were even responsible for some of the best musical numbers from the Tangled series......and despite all that they somehow screwed up "Wish". What's going on at Disney!!?
Thank you for bringing up the Tangled series, because Crossing the Line does so much of a better job conveying a character's frustrations and desire for something new than any of Asha's songs. Cassandra makes sense (even to someone who isn't up to the point of the show where that song is and thus I have no context), but the 100th anniversary movie couldn't give the songwriter enough time (and maybe points of reference to compare to?) to nail this thing?
13:28 „a summon“ actually makes sense in this context. It‘s obviously not a real thing, but the term „summon“ is commonly used in fantasy (stories, gaming, tabletop) to describe a conjured creature such as a familiar.
On rewatch, its also insane how easily you can fix some of these? Like, these *have* to be first drafts. I'm not even a songwriter, but "or why flowers in the wind, are effortless and eloquent dancers" could have easily been "effortless and elegant" "effortless and excellent" "effortless and exquisite". I even kept the e sound and syllable count and the end syllable in case there's a rhyme there. I have no idea how this couldn't get caught and easily patched up with a single google search.
"Crimes against cadence" I'm sobbing, that was gold and I might steal this. I'm an amateur hobbyist, I don't have a career in songwriting, but I hope I never write lyrics this bad
I’ve been thinking of ways to improve the flow and cadence of the “…and he built Rosas many years ago” line and I think something like “who’s the BUILDer of ROSas right FROM the get-GO” would flow more naturally and keep the beat up since that pause between “Magnifico” and “and” really kills it. Just throwing an idea out there.
Love it! I've been trying to fix that cadence, too. My current version is "We have a king named Magnifico who’s the savior of Rosas, and boy, does he know?"
9:27 This line sounds like an r/boottoobig post I saw once that went something like this: Violets are blue Roses are red I'm not very good at poems Microwave
As a band kid, these syllable counts give me a headache, especially since we have to use words in some songs to make sure we don’t take weird breaths and to make sure we have our timing right. I would die if our band teacher gave us this music and expected us to play this at one of our concerts
At All Costs would make a lot of more logical sense if it were a love song between a goodie-two-shoes princess who never defied her parents and a carefree magic boy who doesn't understand the human emotions yet. Somehow trying and failing to express these new feelings they got for each other into words... oh, wait.
Well that at least makes some sense cause even when you put all the bad writing aside, this song just doesn't fit with the scene... it basically comes off as a love song between a married middle aged king and a not-yet-18yo peasant girl... which I personally find rather creepy and distasteful, especially in a kids movie ffs...
So tell me, what the hell were they thinking hiring pop song writers to write for the 100th anniversary film of the studio known for their signature musical theatre style?
Look man I know nothing about poetry and all that but the line "here I are" written instead of "here I am" just to rhyme with star has me sobbing on the floor
I just listened to the first song on the soundtrack. Ohhh boy. I’m a worship leader at my Church, and one thing that really irks me when choosing songs is how the Christian music industry, and really modern songwriting in general, has just completely given up on hard rhymes. The sound of mismatching consonants is absolutely grating on my cochlear nerves! I’ve asked fellow songwriters about this in the past, and the excuse I hear is that hard rhymes make the lyrics “too predictable.” People, it may be difficult, but no form of art is effortless. Musicals were refreshing to me because it seemed like they always went the extra mile to deliver lyrics with perfect cadences and rhymes. Apparently not anymore. 😒
I'm holding on to hope that Disney is just in another dark age and they'll hit their stride again soon. If they don't some other company better come up and fill the vacuum cause we are in need of good art
Slant rhymes are acceptable imo. Taking a page out of one of my favorite musicals: “Diomedes will lead the charge Agamemnon will flank the guards.” ”Charge” and “Guards” don’t rhyme perfectly, but when it’s close enough, the listener doesn’t even notice bc it checks by in their brain. I’ll take slant rhymes over not trying at all. “This Wish”’s seeming allergy to rhyming obliterates any sort of structure the song would have and it doesn’t stick in your head at all. It sounds like Asha is literally making up the song as she goes.
@@crimsonmaverick8237 Yes Epic the Musical! Brilliant! In addition, the way "charge" and "guards" work is because it's spoken so fast that it's fine and sounds good!
I haven't seen the movie and my first exposure to the songs is through this video. How could they do this crap as a 100 year anniversary movie? I'm not even a native English speaker and I'm horrified. Who hired these hacks? Honestly Disney deserves to burn to the ground, they did this to themselves, and it pains me to say that because like many of us, I grew up with the Disney Renaissance. THOSE were actual good lyrics and songs.
You have made excellent points about each song! I thought At all cost was a little decent for me, but still lacked a purpose and it felt like a love song to me. I wouldn’t have noticed these details in the lyrics because I’m more of a visual learner and even the animation was really off. Love the video!!!
Yeah it definitely would have felt more natural as a love song, it came across confusing in context. I agree about the animation lol, and I love that because I'm definitely a more audio-tuned person, I've always been into music. Thank you so much for the comment! 😋
@@brainless_mastermind While I may have spoiled myself too much watching AshaxStar Boy animatics using the song(WAY too much), I can still see that when putting it in the actual scene of where it happened, it doesn't fit that well. As a love song, it would've been a beautiful masterpiece of a song for this year and I agree with that. Which makes me more angry that they scrapped Star Boy because the chemistry between him and Asha could've been perfect for the song instead of what we got.
The writer said she they gave her three weeks to write the songs for the writer and when listening to the interview it sounds like they barely told her anything about the move and gave her key notes. Compare to the other song writers of other Disney movies who'd be writing the songs as the movie come along
Yeah Disney's priorities were wack, I definitely don't think it was all Julia Michaels fault now that I know all the context. I still don't want to believe that a person would use the word eloquent like that, no matter how rushed they were 🤣 but I digress, it was disneys bad they need to get their act together
A summon is actually a pretty common noun in the magic fantasy genre. I see it most often in video game or dnd descriptions. A wizard or sorcerer has the ability to summon something but that something is able to vary and be inconsistent between different castors, so its simply refered to as a summon
Saying "the leaves eat the sun" puts such a terrifying visual in my mind 😭 I think I was too harsh on Isabella's song in Encanto. I'm gonna go give that thing another listen as penance.
The At All Costs Demo version fits better as it was originally meant to be a LOVE SONG. Even the writer had hoped this song would be played at weddings. Sadly, it was changed to this.
Yeah its really a shame, the more I learn about star boy the more I think the romance could have been cute, but with the state of Disney at this point, I'm not even sure they could've pulled that off
The issue is the story was too plot-driven; it still would've come off as contrived. Stories about wishes work better when they're character-driven because their desires have meaning. Aladdin's a great example of doing it right.@@brainless_mastermind
Honestly the best thing about the music of Wish is that I’ve actually learned a lot about songwriting from videos like this. I can now say that I might be able to write a better song than some of these (no promises cuz I have zero songwriting experience).
6:29 you actually could, in one very specific circumstance - if asha wasn't 'meant' to be a heroic characfter at all to begin with. if she was a willing minion of magnifico until he crossed some kind of line she wasn't expecting to hit her so hard, but not having the first clue where to start. someone making mistakes with all the common heroic metaphors for both comedic purposes and to show that they're out of their depth, just going off what they've read in books and heard in stories about what heroes Should Be. and then by the end of the song, as she finds her footing, she's making her purest, truest wish, with all her heart.
At All Costs is the only one I’ve been listening to so it’s the only one I’ve really noticed anything with. I’m so glad you pointed out the “as one does” thing. And Asha’s verse just can’t decide if she’s willing to protect the wishes or just sees them as too precious to ever harm. It’s obvious these lyrics were made for two people speaking to each other and not two people singing about an inanimate object. I honestly can’t even enjoy the second half of the song since for some reason Asha’s voice takes over as the dominant sound instead of a duet (is it supposed to be a duet?) and she’s just singing in the same note (pitch? Idk singing terms) when she started with so much variety. Anyway, loved this video! Made me feel very justified lol!
Don't forget "Knowing What I Know Now" and its lyric "I've seen too many bad things that I can't keep count." *Too* many. Bad things. *THAT* she can't keep count. Ouch.
@@joelblake5310 She says it’s “too many that I can’t keep count” instead of “so many that I can’t keep count.” It’s hard to explain why but it sounds really off to me (on top of being bad grammar)
@@joelblake5310 I think it's the redundancy; they already said "too many" implying a countless amount or a very large amount; "to keep count of", you can't keep count of something that's a large amount or that there is too many of. It doesn't make much sense to put both in the same line; although it technically isn't incorrect with how people speak in the modern day
Another thing I didn't like about that song is that it was supposed to be this "rebel"/revolutionary song...but we knew literally nothing about the characters who sang it. There was no way to connect with Asha's friends. Not even with Amaya.
Small detail: love the fact that you ended the video with Chopin’s Minute Waltz after all those clunky, garbled songs. It just… adds a zinger at the end for me, someone who knows classical music lol

To restore my brain cells from listening to the Wish soundtrack.
listen to the demo of “at all costs” it was originally meant to be a love song between the star and Asha- and student the lyrics are sooo much better
I think you skipped a song.
That's more character than they put in any of these songs
when failing big corporate decides to switch a character from having more depth int them to just being a generic obvious merchandise bait. Classic
It's still the best song; I feel like it still carries meaning, but it's just more generalized to platonic love.

That demo song is the only one I like
'eloquent dancers' hurts even more when 'elegant dancers' is right there and sounds almost exactly the same except for the fact that it makes sense

Therefore, being an eloquent dancer is someone who is masterful and fluent at “body language”. I don’t think the writers did this with any actual intention, but I don’t completely hate that line.

For one thing, it ensures that the movie will age like fine milk.

Same here. Anachronisms yank the audience-whether or not they’re history nerds-right out of the story and its world. They’re jarring, they’re lazy, and as a wise commenter once wrote, they age like fine milk.
That's what got me upset about "I let you live here for free, and I don't even charge you rent."
It's not just the "you already said that tho," it's the fact that it's a fantastic setting, I *never* expected to hear "rent" being used. That's such a modern feel, especially since you think of apartments and landlords, not at all a king in a kingdom with his subjects.
For the “a potion, a spell, a summon, a curse. Anything to make that light reverse!”
May I suggest: “a potion, a spell, a hex or a curse. Anything to make that light disperse!”

Idk if someone already said it, but the music "At all cost" feels like it's a romantic song 'cause it was supposed to be a duet between Asha and the star, who could shapeshift and turn into a star boy who was supposed to be Asha's romantic interest.
I digress.)
In the 1200s, there was ZERO concept of "Outer Space" or what stars were, photosynthesis, the Big Bang or any of the other space references made in the movie.

Probably my least favorite thing about “This is the thanks I get” is the fact that the chorus just repeats the song’s title 4 times in a row.
It feels like Julia Michaels was given 5 seconds to write the song’s chorus, and she just used the first thing that came to mind
From what I've heard that's about right. Apparently she was given 3 weeks and a barebones summary for the I Want song

She prolly did. As much as I hate the songs, I don't think it's all JM's fault considering Disney changed the plot like 100X. At All Costs was meant to be a love duet, I'm A Star was supposed to be sung by star (not the animals), and the villain was going to be a duo. Like they could’ve also done it
“and if people wish to stay here. I don’t even charge for rent.“
It even uses the name of the movie, tying back to wishes and how he doesn’t gaf. How him letting them stay in the kingdom, and taking their wishes is enough in his opinion to fulfill his duty as a great king, and that’s why hes the best. He doesn’t think he needs to do more to be deserving of their love.
It would’ve synced a lot better rhythm wise too
The whole song was him going see how benevolent and kind I am, while showing us that he’s exactly the opposite.

I don't hate either Wish Or Wonka, I enjoyed Wonka more but Wish was decent for me as well 😅
I had the choice to see wonka or wish in cinemas and one at home (find websites online).
None made me wanna grate my ears off so that's a plus
Anyway, there's my rambling, have a nice day 😅
@@just_a_silly_weenie008 my family saw Wonka in theaters (and haven't seen wish at all yet), and we absolutely enjoyed the movie.
They could've used Lin Manuel Miranda but didn't man :(

Also HERE I ARE!!!!!
Can’t believe you didn’t mention the part in I’m a Star where the deer literally says “Watch out world here I are!”
3:56 4:18 - Asha's feelings towards Star Boy.
"Felt this no I haven't"
Asha trying to understand her feelings and why is she thinking this way but realizes it's all so new and unfamiliar to her.
"I hope it would be all right to stay right here beside you"
Asha wishing to be with Star Boy despite their circumstances.
Were the lyrics separated after "I hope"? Yes, but that doesn't I won't try to connect them.
And two bonuses for fun:
-In the demo, "Promise as one does" was originally "Love you as one does" and if you read my earlier statement for that line, hits hard.
That is confirmed! There is concept art of Asha in her final design with Star Boy. @@Kureemy
My theory is "At All Costs" was an SATB quartet between Magnifico, Amaya, Star, and Asha. It explains the verses being completely different and all the melody changes. You can even hear Chris Pine jump from his natural baritone to a tenor midway through his verse when the melody changes. @@tc4331

Yeah it definitely would've fit better, I still think they would've needed to rewrite that second verse, but yeah
Yeah, the lyrics definitely were written _once_ and when they changed the context of the song, they just rolled with the first draft.

….Who rhymes in with in? Sometimes I wish Howard Ashman was the CEO of Disney and was still alive
I have never been more validated than when you shared my exact sentiments about “i’m a star.” truly that song enrages me to no end
Ooh, I'm a star!
Watch out world here I are!

The dumbest line I have ever heard or read. 'Here we are' is RIGHT THERE if you want to keep the rhyme.

Bleh, that’s this song in a nutshell.
These lyrics are like when i translate songs from korean and have to mess around with the wording to match koreans opposite sentence structure lmao
This just makes me realize how much I miss Alan Menken.

You mean Howard Ashman...Menken primarily writes music, not lyrics. he has written lyrics for his own music, but that never was great. Ashman was his BEST partner, period. I will die on that hill. Schwartz comes pretty close behind, but even Menken has fallen a bit far.

These videos critiquing Wish’s music are teaching me more about music than my music lessons from my school ever have.
Then again, learning of what NOT to do is a useful teaching tool (i.e. do the opposite). Failure is a great teacher, after all.
@@cadethumann8605 agreed.

A thing I wanted to point out is the "watch out world, here I are," from I'm a Star. This line makes me unreasonably furious.
6:05 I feel like “ignore every cautioning wind” was right there… and made sense at least a little bit.
Apparently the songs are so bad that the German dub corrected the lyrics to make more sense.
I heard that! That would be fascinating to see, I need to look into that
@@brainless_mastermind I have looked into the German version of "This Wish" and while the cadence is still bad (they were bound by the original song), the lyrics are more coherent with the original meaning left intact and they corrected "throw caution to every warning sign" as "Und ich schlage jede Warnung in den Wind" (throw warning/caution to the winds).
But unfortunately they kept the "I let you live here for free and don't even charge you rent" line ("Ihr wohnt alle umsonst hier nicht mal Miete zahlt ihr dafür")
"You're a Star" unfortunately couldn't be saved. It also added new mistakes like - "We're here for all your question marks" became "the good is within your grasp" and "see that's where all the balls of gas come from" became "it doesn't surprise me the gas sometimes smells."
So basically the Germans tried to save the soundtrack, but even they could only do so much.
The Portuguese version too, the songs are still not the best, but some lyrics make more sense
They tried doing that in the brazilian dub too. I think most dubs did that in fact but, not even the best ones could save this mess sadly
I feel bad for everyone who had to translate the lyrics in a way that makes sense.
@@CleverUsername1 Ha ha. Now the line "Just look at the mushrooms and you'll understand" makes more sense.
I mean, if it's okay with you, that this 👉👈'
It's SO WEIRD.
You’re so right. 😫😭
Either Disney didn't want the movie to be good, so they didn't waste their time, or Linn knew how terrible the movie would be, and he didn't wanna waste his time on this garbage after seeing what happened after the Little Mermaid.
or they wanted to save as much money as possible and Miranda was too expensive for them
or they thought they could get away with trying to copy his style instead of just having him work on it again

@@brainless_mastermind "At all costs" in European Spanish solves every issue with cadence, even the freakin' "I, I-I will protect you" (I'm surprised you didn't mention they put 3 syllables and 3 different notes in a one-letter word. Insane.)
Also, "I'm a star" in Catalan (a language from Spain) has crazy good rhymes, everything rhymes with everything and even has room for orthographical jokes ("pretty" and "old" are written "belles" and "velles", but pronounced exactly the same, so there's a verse saying "with B and V, b/velles", referring to stars, and you can "hear" both words).
It's a shame that I have to look for translations for better versions of the original concept.

"at all costs" sounds like a romantic duet between the two characters every time i hear it lol
In the demo version, it is more of a love song, they just changed some lyrics. Which is a weird thing to do
13:28 „a summon“ actually makes sense in this context. It‘s obviously not a real thing, but the term „summon“ is commonly used in fantasy (stories, gaming, tabletop) to describe a conjured creature such as a familiar.
you should check the vocabulary! NOW!!!

At All Costs would make a lot of more logical sense if it were a love song between a goodie-two-shoes princess who never defied her parents and a carefree magic boy who doesn't understand the human emotions yet.
Taking a page out of one of my favorite musicals:
“Diomedes will lead the charge
Agamemnon will flank the guards.”
”Charge” and “Guards” don’t rhyme perfectly, but when it’s close enough, the listener doesn’t even notice bc it checks by in their brain.
A summon is actually a pretty common noun in the magic fantasy genre. I see it most often in video game or dnd descriptions. A wizard or sorcerer has the ability to summon something but that something is able to vary and be inconsistent between different castors, so its simply refered to as a summon
“I let you live here for free, and I don’t even charge you rent” made me lose the last few remaining brain cells I had.

I love how the song with "watch out world here I are" predictably has the longest segment.
Ouch.
I'm struggling to see what the problem is. What's the error?
@@LavenderWhaleit’s just flat out grammatically incorrect
Small detail: love the fact that you ended the video with Chopin’s Minute Waltz after all those clunky, garbled songs. It just… adds a zinger at the end for me, someone who knows classical music lol

"Oh, what's the cube root of 4913? You aren't gonna believe it! Wow, I tota-"
This is a perfect portrayal of that song and when I heard the line "Here I are" for the first time I actually died
