Years ago, I moved away from the south, where people are actually polite but quite blunt, to Oregon... It was such a culture shock, with the most difficult one being the passive aggressive behavior.
I just noticed that all the books have the library labels on the spines. I like to think it's not because they're props borrowed from a real-life library, but because W&WF stole all the books from the library.
Knowing W&WF it’s not even stolen... these are all the de-commissioned books on esoteric topics that no-one has loaned for decades that the library gives away for free. Then they end up here where they get sold as vintage first editions for 50 dollars each.
Major flashbacks to when I was an intern trying to give fresh ideas to the elderly owners of a failing publishing firm and they literally shut down everything I recommended before I could finish my sentences. So sad when people won’t keep up with the times and their businesses go under because they’re stubborn.
It happens all the time. People get hooked on what worked 20/30/40 years ago, and can't understand why it doesn't still work. Then they complain about it, rather than adapt to the current climate.

I don't want to get into the feminism and SJW thing with this comment, and I've been watching Portlandia for years so it's nothing new for me, but...it reminds me of the time I have spent in the Pacific Northwest, probably 2 years altogether, being in Eugene, OR for a while and also working up in Seattle when I was in my early 20's. The PNW is SO passive aggressive, it is very triggering to relive some of that as a midwesterner. Now you could accuse a midwesterner of being passive aggressive to some degree, but a midwesterner actually wants to work things out, and actually will work to solve the problem in a low conflict way. Someone from the PNW just wants the drama of disagreeing with you, and Portlandia captures that so well. They will take out their frustrations on you, the customer or the employee, in such ridiculous and petty ways, and also in such ingeniously hurtful ways. And the thing I hated the most about Seattle people (Oregonians are a bit more chilled out) is the way that they condescend over you while making you feel completely dehumanized, often with saying very little, while still getting to feel morally superior. I like the evergreens and the mist, but at what cost? At what cost? There are of course some normal people out there too, but overall I don't know how a person can live out there long term without going completely insane. And it just goes to show that Portlanders would rather let their city burn to the ground than actually address the real issues at hand.
Like all good satire, Portlandia walks right up to the line of plausibility, and it's not always obvious when the writers step over. I grew up in the PNW, live in the Northeast now, and share many of your observations about passive-aggressive behaviour there. I didn't spot this social tendency until I left the area, although I do see it on occasion in towns like Cambridge. What's happening is an expression of parochialism; for a city of its size and visibility, Seattle is still an amazingly parochial town. I find the direct behaviour of people in places like Manhattan actually easier to deal with in many respects.
I was actually driving through Portland one of those days conservative news outlets boasted "Portlanders burned their city to the ground!!!" Funny though not a thing looked to be on fire and all was at peace 🤔 No joke... My friend who lived there says there was about five square city blocks where a crowd of protestors had gathered and one dumpster was on fire that day. One. But yeah, the headlines were "Portland burnt to the ground this weekend!!!" My lord people nowadays will believe anything that fits their narrative 🤣🤣🤣
People are like this in any large city where there’s upper middle class yuppy types. I live in Minneapolis, work in the service industry, and I deal with horrific condescending assholes all the time. The Midwest is no exception.
