I know, right?! I bump my head and fall dead to the bed EVERY single time I hear the awkward pauses in the conversation, lmao! Ahh…thank God for the replay button, haha. I can't believe that Carrie and Fred sat down and wrote this song together for this scene. I'm not sure if they wrote the scene, but they wrote the song - they had to have been laughing as hard as we all are! xD
Timing is everything in grad school. You don't want to jump into it too early, because the days of lazy college life are still fresh in your mind. You have to work for a few years, and only when you realize that work sucks and is unrewarding, then it is the right time to retire back into college. Just don't choose a major where you have to spend tons of time kissing the asses of tenured professors because that sucks. An MBA is easy and lets you avoid a lot of the thesis bullshit.
This is the most subtle comedy ever made. I'm genuinely curious if anyone can come up with something more understated and still hilarious. It's so brilliant because you're basically laughing the entire time but it's just like this silent, ironic smile under the surface that keeps bubbling over into hilarity. It's continually funny from start to finish even when nothing is happening. I have such great memories watching this show with friends.
It’s the Raising Arizona of Portlandia. If you haven’t seen it, watch and you’ll understand. Coen Bros. comedy classic that one doesn’t crack up from, you just get the joke and it’s brilliance through the entire film.
10 years later and this skit still makes me laugh every time. I watch it to make me feel better about the world, which takes itself far too seriously these days.
after I saw this video I realized something. My life had no direction, no meaning, I always wanted a job that would let me express my artistic spirit and serve as a livable means of income. Finally, I've found out what I want to do; make jewelry!
True Story: Portlandia has helped me with being frustrated. Whenever someone makes me repeat myself I used to get easily frustrated and say something sarcastic. Now, I just take long pauses and answer the question in a quick and deliberate manner.
This really hits home, because I made jewelry for many years while with a BF who had a bead/lapidary and jewelry biz. Did fun stuff, traveled, enjoyed. Was crazy in love.
I myself am making jewelry now and I take umbrage at this spineless portrayal of those of us engaged in the noble tradition of handmade personal adornments as mindless amateurs with nothing better to do. And so does my wife.
A childhood friend studied art in college and eventually got an MFA in painting. Then, she went to school for massage therapy. When I asked why she didn’t try and get a job with, say, an animation studio, she said it didn’t interest her. Then, she took a pottery class. Started selling it. A few months ago, she started a class in jewelry making at a community college. Eventually, I predict, she’s going to marry Fred Arminson.
For me, the most genius moment of the show was when Carrie told J Mascis that he was ''Too loud'' - even though his guitar wasn't plugged - and threw him off the stage, and he stood far in the background playing to himself.. I had the honor of standing 3 meters from him and Dinosaur Jr. on a show here in Tel-Aviv - and the guitar wall of sound that he created was the loudest I've ever heard live!
His stack of amps is no joke, he has them all pointed at him on stage, must be so loud up there. That's my theory for why he's so quiet and soft-spoken, because he can't hear a word anyone is saying.
I love Portlandia. The green filter on every intro is a nice hallmark touch. Or maybe the sunlight in Portland is lime green... who knowns its a different place.
I don't make jewelry myself, but as a crocheter I can attest that most handicrafts in the US are highly undervalued. It's the Wal-mart culture--people buy cheap Chinese, Indian or Bangladesh jewelry or crafts and somehow think the same thing in the US made in the US should cost the same. It actually makes me mad to see crocheted items (which have to be done by hand--it can't be done by machine) for cheap at Target or something because I know how much work it takes and how little that worker gets
Haha thanks so much for uploading this skit! I used to love watching portlandia and especially this scene! Then I would just watch Poor decisions of Todd Margeret but now... I'M MAKING JEWELRY NOW!
