Socializing is one of the most important things you can do with a new puppy or dog. And it’s much more than just introducing them to other dogs and people! Here’s how to socialize your dog in a busy environment so they don't get overwhelmed. You can use this process with your new dog or any dog who needs some help learning how to be good in public around people, other dogs, sounds, cars, bikes, planes, trains, wild animals, and anything else you can think of. There could be several reasons your dog doesn't take treats outside your home. The first could be that the dog is simply over-stimulated (over-excited) by all the new sights and smells, especially if your treats aren't of high value (say kibble vs. hot dogs). The dog is more interested in sniffing the smells, watching the world go by, meeting other people/dogs, etc. than he is in you and your boring treats. The second is that your dog is frightened or anxious about the new environment, new people/dogs. Your clue as to which is which will be your dog's body language. Watch for things like a tail tucked between the legs, "whale eye", yawning, licking the lips, body posture (hunched body posture), turning away, trying to leave the situation, etc. Those are all signs that your dog is fearful. Having said that, be cognizant of context as well, if your dog just woke up from a nap and yawns, he's likely not fearful. If he just finished licking some wonderful peanut butter and he's licking his lips, he's likely not fearful. But yawns and lip licks out of "context" can indicate anxiety or fearfulness. In any event, back up and introduce distractions more slowly and if you're using low value treats, try higher value treats if your dog is more interested in what's going around him than he is in you. If your dog is fearful, high value treats are unlikely to work (which is another cue as to what your dog is feeling). If your dog is fearful, fear not. You can help your dog overcome his fear!

I was watching a TV program about training difficult dogs. Someone asked for help with their little dog who was “vicious” towards other dogs. But I could see that when he was pulling towards the other dog barking, the other dog was doing play bows! A big clue about what was really going on!

My goldendoodle turned two this month and man I have been working with her so much. She is amazing and listens and does whatever I ask if I have treats. She is very food motivated. If I do not have treats, she wont listen at all. I also can't get her to stop getting too excited and jumping on people or barking at other dogs. I put at least an hour a day into training with her. I will continue to watch the channel all the time and working with her and hope it improves!
Why don't you watch Shield K9. You'll understand why in the beginning Zak's ways work but why it doesn't in the long run.

Hello, I just started watching your videos because I’m trying to train my dog to behave around people and other animals. She is not used to them so when she sees people are animals, she becomes overly excited and then that excitement turns into aggression. If I want to teach, her socialization how do I do that at a park? Sometimes people allow their dogs to walk around without a leash and I am just afraid that another dog will come up to her and a fight will start.

I have a bull terrier mix that weighs 68 pounds. He’s big and strong. He’s food motivated. He was jumping on us to take food so I trained him to lay down for his treats. Now he lays down, but he barks very loudly. I want advice on how to stop the barking and he is stuck on lay down because he thinks that’s how he gets his treat he has no motivation for toys. What can I do?

@@christineleonard1110 he forces, and encourages dog owners to force their own anthropomorphic fantasies onto dogs because they have a misplaced paternal/maternal instinct. It’s damaging to a dogs psychology and often leads to worsening of certain behaviours/reactivity, and at the end of the day it’s about them feeling good about themselves because they are ‘kind and caring’ for their dogs, however good they may feel it often comes at the expense of the dog who is not given clear direction or guidance and lacks leadership. Death over discomfort; Zak and the other ‘dog trainer’ charlatans out there would much rather your dog be euthanised for behavioural issues than face momentary discomfort as a consequence to dangerous learned behaviours like resource guarding and biting. This shouldn’t be attempted to fix with positive reinforcement as a primary tactic. For the love of god go find any other dog trainer to learn from.

I'm requesting that you make a video training an adult Presa Canario like the one that attacked my German Shepherd girl a couple of years ago as I had her on a 6 ft leash while walking up and down my neighborhood. I'm a senior and my dog is very docile while in public. My girl weighs 92 lbs but that Presa Canario, which looked to me like it outweighed her by 40 - 50 lbs jumped her from a stealth position behind us. I had no idea the dog was stalking us (look it up Presa Canarios stalk) but it flipped my Lola on her back like she was a rag doll. It shocked and scared the bejeezus out of me, who was still holding the leash. I had just started carrying pepper spray and deliberately chose the brand that shoots a heavy stream 20 ft because I'm a bad shot. As it was I was 5 ft away, still with the leash in my left hand, and reacted quickly because I carry the pepper spray in my right hand with my thumb on the trigger so was able to get that dog directly in the eyes with a very plentiful and strong stream of pepper spray. That dog immediately walked off my dog and started back in the direction of where it came from, all the time shaking its head. My dog was stunned in the few seconds while she was on her back with that dog on top of her. She didn't move a muscle in those few seconds before I could react. I believe that is what saved her. I have no doubt if my dog had moved a muscle she would have been mauled. I filed a written complaint with animal control who warned the owner to keep the dog up but the owner still didn't listen. People in the neighborhood would let me know when the dog was out and I kept reporting and the owner finally gave the dog away. I'd like to see you train that kind of adult dog or a similar type with a history of attacking or showing very aggressive and threatening tendencies.

When it happened I felt extreme panic and in only a second or two several horribly frightening pictures flashed through my mind as to what could happen to both my dog and myself because I have seen what has happened to others on news reports. Although I had walked my dog for years in the neighborhood and felt safe I had began seeing where some folks were not keeping their dogs confined and I had a gut feeling that kept nagging at me and wouldn't go away that I would be better off carrying something to defend us and ended up choosing the pepper spray that goes long distances with a heavy forceful stream which makes it easier to hit the eyes than if you carry the mist type spray. I got the bigger can too just to be safe. I had just started carrying it. That was the best decision I ever made because it changed what could have been an outcome that might have resulted in permanent maiming or death to both myself and my dog.

Hi Zak. I am going to comment under every video of yours in hopes this reaches you, as I am desperate.
I know there’s a lot of controversy in the dog training world right now amongst online content dog trainers, and I know there are many that have tried to denounce you and tell you you are wrong for “calling out” aversive dog trainers and training policies.
Maybe they have become desensitized to the “front lines”, what I like to call them at least.
I read a post that said dogs don’t have a voice, but I do. A loud one.
The truth is I’m not loud enough. I can’t be as loud as you.
I write to you in fear of dogs current lives. In retribution of past dogs lives.
There is a shelter (I know there are so, so many right now.) that is killing more and more dogs and that is on a dangerous path to a possible mass execution when they lose their insurance by the end of this month. The shelter in question is the Spokane Humane Society in Spokane, Washington.
I am a former worker from this shelter. When I worked there I spent the majority of my time speaking out against the usage of prong collars, aversive training techniques, the verbal abuse of my fellow workers from management that went completely unaddressed, and then finally against the implementation of an “emergency training technique” where they trained all staff and volunteers to choke a dog out by its leash if it tried to bite. It happened to a dog that was attacked in his own kennel, and then subjected to a stressful medical examination with people he had no trust in. The notes said they hung him by his leash for 5 minutes. Then they threw him in a kennel that was not his own in another part of the shelter, with no food, blankets, toys, or water and then walked away. I can still hear his cries.
This training was implemented by a dog “trainer” in my area, purely balanced k9. This was a trainer the shelter paired with for the prong collar training and where they would send dogs to for a board and train program. One of the dogs that has had its life ended might as well have been murdered directly by her. His name was Brownie.
Brownie was a sweet little pit Bull, had stress since he was in a shelter but usually went under my radar since he was doing fairly well. One day brownie decided he was obsessed with the hoses that were in every play yard, and resource guarded one with a dog walker on staff. He broke skin on her ankle, so he was immediately placed in routine bite quarantine. 10 days isolated in a kennel and only taken out to go pee, in a muzzle. This was state requirements. Not all dogs put on bite quarantine were assigned prong collars, but their usage was becoming more and more popular there, and I truly wonder if it had to do with his breed. Only certain staff members were able to walk him. They were usually the ones who were much heavier handed and corrective based.
Brownie bit another dog walker when he was being leashed back up and taken back to his isolation kennel. One day after this, he disappeared. No one knew where he was going or when he went.
He was sent to Purely Balanced k9. We received little updates, I had to ask and pry information every time. Most of the time the management had no idea how he was doing and assured they’d ask the trainer. We received “he’s doing well so far, not displaying any of the behaviors that he did in the shelter”.
Purely balanced k9 had returned him saying he displayed no concerning behaviors, and to paraphrase basically said he was the perfect little pittie. And for that, she said she thought he should be behaviorally euthanized. She reasoned that it made him unpredictable to be so good.
I understand behavioral euthanasia is complicated and is part of the rescue worlds’ conversation. And sometimes it’s the hard reality of shelter life-the philosophical debate of what is responsible homing. But this was a murder. She may not have pushed that final drug, but she killed him with her irresponsibility and incompetency as a trainer.
Since then another resource guarder has been put to death. He was a victim of the emergency training technique and could not calm himself down after biting. He bit a staff member and was sentenced to die. He spent the last 10 days of his life confused and isolated in a kennel, unable to be touched or handled by the people that loved him.
The shelter is scheduled to lose their insurance by the end of July. The dogs will undergo behavioral evaluations from people who have no behavioral background to see who is eligible to be adopted. Those deemed ineligible will be put to death.
These dogs are my very good friends. I have personally worked with them and each one thrived with kindness and positive reinforcement. Each one desperately wants to find their forever human, and with the right one could thrive and live very loving and happy lives. There are already dogs not listed on the website as adoptable that have not been adopted, and I fear for the worst for them.
I’m begging for your help, for your voice that is louder than mine. I have used my own and it’s not enough. I can’t lose another of these sweet, kind souls to the shelter managements incompetence and lack of understanding of behaviors. They have listed long term dogs with a $0 adoption fee, but have not updated the public on what it will mean for them if they are not adopted. The public thinks the shelter dogs are safe in this no kill shelter.
To anyone reading this: Save a life. Spread this story. Please. Loki Larry, Dr Pepper, Beethoven, Athena, Copper, all the rest of the pups at the Spokane Humane Society beg you too.
The workers at the Spokane Humane Society are dedicated amazing human beings who would give anything for those dogs. Their shelter has failed them. The Spokane Humane Society needs a thorough update on training and needs a management and director change asap. And these dogs need rescuing from their rescue.
I have signed up for your training class. My question for you is about harnesses. I bought 2 Golden Retriever puppies I need to train. They are currently 13 and 15 lbs. That will change and change quickly. I do not want to waste money on harnesses they will quickly out grow and then buy more and have them outgrow again... What do you recommend I use that will not require numerous harnesses?
Zach I like ruff wear harnesses and he has lots of support from the breast plate. But it looks like it’s too close to his neck and impedes his normal movement to put his head down to sniff. No harness is perfect- it’s just a suggestion.

It looks like Dog daddy has been chosen by the people as the preferred training system on youtube. Zak you had a good run, but the truth comes out in the end. No amount of lies will keep you relevant now.
My 18WO puppy is absolutely insane, he barks at everything and everyone, he stops when a dog barks in the distance and won't move or focus on me, he pulls SO MUCH on the leash. I'm almost giving up on walks, he's 15 kilos (around 35lb, I think). I can't control him. It's nothing like the videos
A new puppy can be very high energy and difficult to manage, dont stress! we all go through it. I recommend reaching out to a local dog trainer who uses modern non-aversive methods like Zak for support. Also build up your puppies skills in less distracting environments, good luck 👍🏻

When socializing future k9's for personal protection & police dog work pre-introduction to the heavy/human varmit a few of my favorite places was a park that had a raised chained suspension bridge that swung too & frow. If a dog, any dog can be proficient @ auto sit on a moving bridge their solid on that command.
Secondly our local airport has stairs so near the runway that when jets would leave the loading access gate turning around to taxi towards the runway the load blast of a jet once pivoting AROUND was intense & healing step by step provided a higher than normal distraction. Next step would be intro to off leash obedience & the introduction of that human varmit begins.

Mother dogs correct their puppies through methods such as growling or snarling, physical guidance, withdrawal of attention, and teaching through play.
Humans often approach dog training through a lens influenced by emotions and cultural perspectives. Unlike mother dogs, who rely on instinctual methods to correct and teach their puppies, humans tend to anthropomorphize dogs, attributing human-like emotions, motivations, and reasoning to them.
If you align with a movement that prioritizes an industry based on ideologies and consumption over proven methods and achieving training goals, and criticize real trainers who have demonstrated their effectiveness, I feel concerned for the dogs that need help. Trainers like Rober, Larry, Shield K9, and Ivan have all proven themselves through their expertise and results.

Hi Zack. I just found your channel. I have a large dog the I think is a Cur breed. His owner robbed a gas station and when police got him the dog was just laying there. I talked to lady and store and Buddy jumped in my car and I took him home. When riding he jumps from front to back seat and barks at every car that goes by. How do I teach him to listen he is about a year old and beautiful but hard headed.

How old is Shade here? I am a huge proponent of socializing your puppy, but socializing wisely. I'd be concerned about taking a too-young puppy in a situation like this simply because there are a whole lot of dogs whose health status and vaccination history you don't know. I am 100% behind taking a puppy to puppy classes (where puppies all have a similar vaccination history) and having them around older dogs who are tolerant of puppy behavior and whose health status and vaccination history you know (and you know they aren't going to be making your puppy sick). This is great for older puppies who've had a good vaccination history, I'd just be cautious about an environment like this until the puppy is a little older and has more disease protection under his or her belt.

Don't put him in a cage for a start. Give him the opportunity to burn his energy. A 2mo old puppy is full of energy. Find a trainer in your area and learn the basic needs of dogs

what educational background do you have that makes you qualified to speak on dog behavior?
A PetSmart certificate. That's it.
What is YOUR educational background that makes you qualified to question Zak? I have a master's degree in psychology with two years (yes, two years) extra course work at a university in animal behavior (we were required to do 2 residencies and 2 externships where our techniques and methods were critiqued by our instructors and often video-taped and played in front of the class--mistakes and all for God an everybody else to see. That was tough, but I learned a whole lot--from my own mistakes and from other student's mistakes.) That makes me pretty "qualified" to speak on dog behavior--at least on the surface. But I still have much to learn. I continue to read books on training (even those by authors with whom I disagree about training methods), I continue to look at the professional literature (articles in scientific, peer-review journals) and watch other positive trainers (from whom I learn a lot). I think Zak is a great trainer. Yes, he's made some mistakes. Yes, he's done some things that I thought "I'd have done this a little differently". But what trainer DOESN'T make mistakes (God in heaven knows I've made some really good ones in my day and if your honest with yourself, I bet you'll admit, at least to yourself, that you've made some mistakes, too??? Zak is just honest enough to share his. Put 5 trainers together in a room and you'll often get 5 different methods of addressing a behavioral issue. Just because I might have done it a bit differently doesn't make Zak wrong and me right. Nor does it mean I'm wrong and he's right. And when I see him doing something that I'd have done a little differently, it makes me think about my own technique. It makes me question if I am, indeed, mistaken. And when I see that his "method" got the same results (and is still positive), then it gives me another option I might not have considered before to help a dog with behavioral issues. So please share your background that makes you qualified to criticize Zak. If you are obviously better qualified than I, then I'll bow to your expertise, but I will continue to watch Zak because I learn things from watching him and I don't know all there is to know and I still have lots of things to learn. I want to continue to question how I would handle a situation and find mistakes I may have made, how to do it better.

Hi Zak! Do you allow strangers to say hi or pet your new puppy/dog in public places? is it okay? I read somewhere that to allow strangers to pet your pup in a public place is not okay. So I am confused here. Thank you!

First, you're correct that Inertia was reactive when Zak first got her. Second, you're incorrect that she's still reactive (or at least I've seen no evidence that she's still reactive--where's YOUR evidence that she's still reactive?). Zak took the appropriate steps to help her overcome her reactivity. Third, most dogs (like most people) aren't just going to love every dog under the sun and every person under the sun. I'm about the biggest animal lover you can imagine, but I've met a few dogs that I really didn't like much! And I've met more than a few people that I really didn't care for all that much. That doesn't mean the dog is "reactive". It's okay for dogs to say "I really don't care for that dog or that person and I'd rather not be around them". If you know dog body language, dogs will tell you this without the histrionics of lunging, barking, snapping, and biting. If you don't understand their body language, though, they will often resort to lunging, barking, snapping and biting. I have a little guy that was quite reactive when we adopted him. We took steps to help him overcome his reactivity (his stemmed from fearfulness). Now he is quite happy to play with most other dogs, but there are some dogs he doesn't enjoy playing with. And that's perfectly okay. He doesn't like "pushy players" and dogs that roughhouse too much. And I don't force him to play with dogs like that. He has every right to say "I don't want to play with that dog" just like I have every right to say "I don't want to hang around with that person". That doesn't make him "reactive".
