My dog follows me inside the house nonstop but I guarantee you if I accidentally let go of his leash he’d run off to the sunset without a second thought 😅
I'm a senior and have a little terrier, I take her with me shopping, and everywhere. 24/7 we are together. Last evening I had to attend a meeting that she was excluded from for approx. 2 hrs. for the first time in over 6 months we were separated. I came home she has scratched at my door and door frame to the point of damaging her paws, it broke my heart and it took me the rest of the evening to calm her down. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Hi Janet, I Hope you’re okay?! Just curious how have you been getting on with your little terrier I have a Jack Russell terrier too his 10 years old I’ve had him since he was eight weeks old and I’ve always lived at home with my family so there’s always been someone home now I’ve moved out and it’s just me and him when I go to work he cries and barks non-stop :( I have a doggy camera so I can see him he just doesn’t sit still!! I’ve tried leaving the radio on distracting him with toys and chews, tiring him out with walks first and tried to take it in stages leaving him five minutes at a time and nothing seems to work :’( xx
@@sophiealice7999 I actually have the same problem as you! I also have a Jack Russell terrier and he is 9 years old and cries when he is alone in the house when I look through the camera. I've also tried the radio, toys, and lots of exercise, tiring him out. I recently moved out too and my neighbors are starting to complain because of his cries. I live in a small apartment so I don't really have a lot of room to do this exercise with my dog :(
In the 80's -- i.e. before the internet -- I had a dog with separation anxiety, and I hit on the idea of letting her spend the days with a neighbor's young dog who also was unhappy being left alone. I confined them in my kitchen with plenty of water and newspapers on the floor. There was quite the mess to clean up but her big grin when I got home made it all worthwhile. Eventually the neighbor moved away but my dog was cured of her anxiety then so it worked out.
@@princess_reaper He does train dogs. It's just not the core of his job, nor is it the core of any behaviorist. They are specialized in the human to animal relationship, but still are able to train or educate dogs. In a matter of hours actually. The humans are way longer to train and educate that's the issue most behaviourists face lmao
Being so recent and understanding about social distancing and always being home with your dog, the time will come when we do have to go back to our regular lives and our dogs need to understand it better. I learned a lot today and I’ve had dogs my whole life
Precisely... I totally understand Cesar is just describing the training principle and this needs to be built on ... but Sofia is a well trained/ obedient dog.
He's showing what to do and how it works. Any dog can be trained to this degree. Operant conditioning is prevalent in all life forms in all ages. Otherwise animals wouldn't adapt to their environments. The thing with dogs with anxiety is that obviously the dog won't be fine the first time you walk out the door, it has been trained by you to be anxious when you leave. But you can walk back from the road you came and pick another one, you can slowly change his behaviour by doing what was suggested, among other things.
@@sedoniadragotta8323 I don't doubt you tried everything at your disposal. That, however, doesn't mean you tried everything possible or that it simply beyond your capabilities. The fact however, that remains despite your tries, achievements, capabilities or limitations is that classical conditioning works. It's a fact of evolved organisms. And domesticated animals can be taught to a great degree, and separation anxiety is inside the scope of training. Of course it won't have the same results on every animal, but every animal can improve. More anxious animals just mean more patience and longer time frame for work.
My son’s lab had terrible separation anxiety so I took the easy way out. I bought a huge kennel and adopted him a friend. Now they hang out in the kennel together when we have to leave and he is calm, never tries to bust out or chew up the tray. Ha! Not a solution everyone can use, I know. Worked like magic, though.😅
Just watching this I was very sceptical, since Cesar was using an already-calm dog, but i thought I'll just have a go with my little rescue that won't leave me alone, but it worked immediately, allbeit just short distances. I started by just taking a few steps away and returning. Then going to the door jamb and returning a few times. The going in to the next room...usually the trigger for him to come trotting after me. And it worked. He stayed put and enjoyed the treats and tummy tickles he got as a reward. I would like to see Cesar do this with a dog that isn't so well trained. I'm now in the kitchen and he's settled in his point of reference. Thank you for giving me a starting point.
I gave him a treat as soon as he'd managed to wait for as long as I wanted him to. So that he would associate the treat with his calm and patient behaviour. Within 6 weeks I got him from never letting me out of his sight to being able to cope with 20 minutes while I worked in the front garden with the door closed.
This exercise saved my life as a first time dog parent of an 11-week-old Bichon Frise. It’s worked magic. Thank you so so so much from our entire family! ❤
This is one of the most informative and instructive videos I've seen on this issue. I have referred back to it many times, and I've passed it along to pet parents I've been training, as well. Thanks for taking the time to play this out for us so we can gain a knowledge of how to successfully treat separation anxiety - and, just as important - what the thought process is that the dog is going through. Very thorough and helpful.
This is why I set boundaries. My gf thinks I’m mean but she doesn’t understand. I make them sleep in their own beds, I don’t constantly cuddle them or allow them to follow me everywhere. They are very well behaved and friendly dogs.
Well done. Cesar is focused on being a TV star. He doesn't show the dirty part. By dirty part, I mean what seems inhumane to humans but means leadership that dogs are hungry for as dogs. He always shows things at a macro level after success rather than the daily work that goes in at a micro level. He is EXCELLENT at training dogs, but he really does a rather poor job of educating humans how to relate to their dogs. You have it right! I encourage you to delve into the world of TRUE balanced dog training. I think Cesar practices balanced dog training but presents more of a positive only approach to be popular, showing results without showing methods. You are definitely on the right track and your approach is definitely more compassionate and loving to dogs that those that criticize you for being cruel. Keep up the good work!
My dog was abandoned out in the middle of nowhere, near my workplace. He was sitting on the side of the road, and my daughter and I eventually got him to come to us. We didnt have a place to send him, so he hung out with me in my loader and latched on to me. Now I can't even leave him home with my wife. He sits and whines and howls all day until i get home. He has to go to work with me every day. Luckily I work somewhere that is cool with it. The guys at work love him and the daughter of the owner of the company actually went out and bought him his own safety vest with the company logo on it.
WOW LUCKY YOU, HOW NICE! BUT STILL IT WOULD B WISE TO START TRAINING HIM SLOWLY BEC U NEVER KNOW WHAT COULD HAPPEN TO U AND THEN HE WOULD SUFFER EVEN MORE. ✌️💚☮️💟
Same. I have my own company, so I can take him with me in office, but when I have meetings, or when I travel, I leave him at my parents, where both of us lived for few years. He is OK with that, but he suffer a lot, and when I came back from vacation he is mad for few days. 🙄😭
Beautiful story! I did rescue a pet from the streets with my daughter too. My daughter was 5 years old and told me: Daddy, this dog has not family, we have to take care of her. Long story short, after 7 years, this dog is the most loyal and lovely pet ever.
People don't understand that this video is to understand the Why is happening, What make this happen, Where this happening, Why this is happening and how to correct. This video is to make you understand your dog and how to work with it. That why (i think) he choose a dog with no séparation anxiety to help you visual what to expect. you will be distract with a dog with anxiety in this video. my dog have separation anxiety and i couldn't understand him. this video help me alot to understand what is happening in this doggo mind. the key is to work together with your dog, compromise and learn each other. Thank you very much! this video really help open my views and i will do my best to work with my doggo to have a heathly separation.
I’ve been practicing this for a few days and I can say my dog is getting better. Now I’m leaving her alone on purpose, everyday for a bit longer, and she is not barking anymore. Thanks for the video!
My dog gets to come to work with me because I am a family physician in private practice, and she helps me with my patients; she has a bed under my desk :). She goes with me almost everywhere, though she does get anxious when I have to go to the store and won't take her with me when it is too hot for her in the car. (She is a little tiny 8 pound Shih Tzu rescue). Thank you so much for these tips.
I just tell my dog that I have to go to work and he instantly goes into chill mode. We're kind of inseparable otherwise...he's crazy intuitive, loyal and trusting. Can't express my gratitude enough for him. ❤
I do DoorDash. So, it’s not regular hours. Sometimes I may be gone from 8 to even 12 hours at a time. And other times I’m back at the house between every order. As much as I know he doesn’t like being locked up, if I said, ok, I’ve gotta go, he’d go straight for his cage. And then he started to differentiate between the body language of me getting ready to leave, as opposed to getting ready to take him outside. Then it eventually got to the point, if he heard the alert from the DoorDash app, he would run to his cage.
I adopted a very seperation anxious dog. He can have his eyes on me, and still whine. Working hard on retraining us both as it's been 7 years without a dog. ❤
I don't do single dogs anymore. I get so much more out of my dog's love for each other and watching them play. I can leave knowing they are content in each other's company and I return to such a calm, content energy. I'd never go back to having a single dog.
I got another dog for her to have company and a friend but they are not thrilled with each other and then they started fighting and I love them both and this is heartbreaking because I don't want either of them to feel scared and hurting each other.
@@devdonedidit i know that but his title is the best dog trainer in the world and he also said that. it's his dream and he made it now. what can you say
It works! My dauchound follows me all through the house and it was difficult because I’m a stay at home mother and wife. The kids are in college now but still at home. So when I go to clean he kept following me! I did what he said and the living room was his place to stay and now when I go to get the broom and mop all I do is point and he goes in there and stays!👍
I watched this video in 2020 and taught my dog to be in the reference spot. I followed the video’s instructions and never called him out. It’s 2023 now and my dog is still there. I solved the separation anxiety problems but now I need to know how to get my dog out of there.
This video helped me SO MUCH with my dogs separation anxiety. We started to do Point of Interest training around the house throughout the day and incorporated that with what we were doing before (leaving the house, coming back in and rewarding if she is calm and stays put). BOOM! HUGE difference! Now we can leave the house for 40min and she is relaxed, stress free and calm. Working up to 1 hour and then multiple hours! Thank you Cesar!!
I have a seven month old Moyenne poodle; I was hoping watching Cesar address this problem, as my dog has severe, separation anxiety.; she has frantically tried to dig her self from behind the door; I do not trust her yet to be alone in the whole house; too many danger factors for her. Yes, I have tried to think of anything she might get into and put them extremely high, put them in containers; but she still is able to get what she wants.Factors that probably contribute or that it is only the dog and I. I got her to train her as a service dog, but I am having doubts that will be possible with the destructive separation anxiety she has. I.e. she had been crated before and was very anxious. I mistakenly thought, giving her a bigger room would help. Put the crate in the room for her to have all her comfort things along with items with my scent. I cannot count how many times she follows menow. She has figured out a please in the house, where she can keep an ion me at all times, and lays there, if she hears me move, she jumps right up and comes to my side. Her eyes follow me constantly while she is eating. If I am out of sight, she will stop eating and look for me. I have tried the technique of going inch by inch away from her, if she sit/stays and comes on command she is rewarded. She nose bumps the frame of my wheelchair as if she is checking "yes she still here". She is good with other dogs; gets too excitable and jumps with people. My wheelchair has been out of order since December 2022, so it very much interrupted training and not able to give her proper exercise. Caesars cute dog in the clip, to me, does not actually have separation anxiety, so it is difficult to really see he works with a dog with severe separation anxiety.
@@cheryldamico6210 One thing I noticed in your comment is the "if she sit/stays and comes on command she is rewarded" Cesar says in this video NOT to recall your dog from the place you are trying to get them to stay at because you are rewarding your dog for leaving that place and coming towards you, which is the opposite of what you want. You want to tell your dog to stay in one place while you move away from them. If they are able to stay in that place you go back to them and reward them. You just keep on doing this and you'll be able to go further away from your dog for longer periods of time. Remember, don't call your dog from these places because it's a fun game your doing where your dog is challenged to stay in that place until you come back! Hope this helps!!
@@Revi674 We just recently did 2+ hours and she was completely fine, sleeping even! 😂 I think she will be fine even for 4-5 hours which I'll try soon. I can visibly see a difference in her when we leave, she is so much more relaxed and calm, this video literally saved us.
Hola Cesar! We've had a 7month old puppy about a month now, who followed us home for half a mile. I cleaned him up and took him in, had him Vet checked, chipped, etc. We take him with us when we leave the property, leaving him in the truck with toys when we go in to shop, etc. Eventually, we're gonna need to leave him alone at home. I plan to use the techniques you've shown and so appreciate all you do for humans and our beloved dogs!
Cesar Millan something I would love help with is easing my dogs fear at the vet. It is the only place she becomes 'rock bottom' level of fearful. Thank you Cesar!!♥️
@@ZP916 Have you ever tried visiting the vet, without her getting a treatment? Just go into the waiting room, give her a reward (or even better, if your vet agrees to give her a reward) and then leaving again? Breaking up the routine, that vet means unpleasantness should change their behaviour a lot.
Hi cesar my dog is an emergency case because he has some really bad behaviors that are really dangerous for others dogs and people can you please help me and I called your center and I never got a call back
Every other video on this topic is exactly the same, but he gave a completely different strategy! I love it! I have been battling separation anxiety with my dog- and one of my big questions was this exactly: shouldn't I be modifying his behavior when I am home first? No one else had addressed this!
The coof never bothered me. I stay home with my best friend all the time. The family hated it but me and the dogs loved seeing the family more often. Hope everyone is well today. God bless those that lost loved ones during to pandemacrat.
Needed this I never had a dog before she is a tiny thing ive stepped on her a few times on accident because she doesn't understand that I am getting ready for work or doing something she shouldn't be near for because she can get hurt. Today is my last straw her poor little paw got caught in a drawer I felt so bad but I blamed her because she doesnt listen when I tell her go to your bed. Trying this because I dont want to hurt ever again
Gonna start doing this with my dog. She always barks and cries super loud whenever I get home, I started turning my back to her and not giving her any attention or contact until she settles down. So far it’s been working little by little but patience is the key.
My littermates were very vocal when I would return. I greet them with a carrot each, encouraging them to calm down and they can have their carrot. It works for my boys!
One time I was housesitting where there was a German shepherd & a house cat that slept downstairs. After I went to sleep upstairs, at 3 am, the dog tapped on the outside of my door with her paw. When I followed her downstairs, she led me to the cat who wanted more dry cat food in her bowl.
I’ve had my dog before Covid, I found a great doggie daycare facility I take her to twice a week to socialize with other dogs vs just humans. She loves it.
@kenyabutts3592 if you find a good responsible facility, I highly recommend it. We tried a cpl and found the one. Trust me, if she didn't feel comfortable she'd let me know. I think it helps a lot, atleast for us.
@kenyabutts3592 plus... I believe she learned, drop off away doesn't mean forever, when you return they are tired and happy. And away from You and the home for a while. It's not the Only thing I do with her, just a break in the norm.
We had a dog with separation anxiety so we got her a friend, that turned into 2 dogs with separation anxiety. We gave them a place to watch out the window , it worked 🙂 , they watch us leave , then about 1 minute of howling , then they wait and watch for us to come back.
thank you for this, i’m struggling so much with my 6 month old pomeranian, her barks are obnoxiously loud, i hope she will get used to being alone and more independent
My Boston has horrible separation anxiety. What I just started this week is giving her a big hollowed out bone with a little peanut butter inside right before I leave and telling her, “ I have to go to work” before I go, so now she’s understanding she gets treat because I’m leaving. I haven’t heard her yelping and barking when I’m outside so I’m hoping she will start understanding.
I just wanted to say that putting a dog in a crate isn’t a bad thing. Dogs are naturally den animals. Hence, if you give them a treat they really relish, they will often take it back to their bed (den). Dogs will often feel anxious if they are left in a large amount of space because they feel they have to protect it. The smallest amount of space they are in,(as long as they can stretch out and stand up without any restriction), makes them actually feel safer. It’s also much easier when it comes to puppy training. Dogs won’t naturally soil their own bed, so the smaller you make the space, the less likely they are to pee in the bed. (den). We have used crates all our 3 dogs over the last 22 years and each one of them has been happy and healthy. This is the first dog we have had one that has really suffered from separation anxiety (he’s only 14 weeks old). I just didn’t want crate training to be demonised as something that is cruel to dogs, actually it is something that makes them feel a lot more secure. Thank you, Caesar, for such a great video, we have already started implementing this technique, our dog is a cocker spaniel, so he’s a quick learner! We are trying to make the “designated space” the threshold of a room, and his bed (eventually it will be his bed permanently, but like you having multiple tables around, we are using the threshold of a room to create the separation gradually, as Reuben wants to be with my husband constantly, literally, touching! So the fact that we have managed to get him to stay at the threshold of a room and then reward him calmly with affection and reassurance that he is a “good boy“ is a massive achievement. 🙏🤞🐾❤️
@@kyliegirl1976exactly. One trainer was saying how one of the worse things new puppy owners make is giving their pups/dogs too much unsupervised freedom. A crate should be a pups/dogs safe space anyway. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with crate training so long as it’s no used as a form of punishment. If I can’t physically keep eyes on my pup, I know she’s going to be safe in her crate, which prevents toileting accidents and her getting into something she shouldn’t be.
We adopted a dog 10/7/23. She really has separation anxiety, bad, which we were u aware and so was the adoption people. This vidro was helpful but I think I'll watch it again.
according to Caesar in a different video, the dogs that BOLT out the door, away from you, are the ones that don't get enough exercise and they think this is their only moment so they take it and run!
@@merichamarais9539 I know right... But sometimes life happens. I still believe my dog rather likes having breakfast and dinner than me being with her at all times 😂😉
Cesar, I agree with everything you share here. I train my dogs in SAR, one of the things we were required to demonstrate to pass the testing phase is a long down stay out of sight. I’ve trained three of my dogs for this. The difference is that when I return, from the early stage to the more advanced stage, I reward with high level of engagement using a tug toy. My dogs learned early that playing tug and fetch were fun and connected us in play. My Labrador was so reliable that I would leave him outside stores to do my shopping. People would tell me they would try to say hello but his focus was purely on the door waiting for me.
I’m at 9:57 and when he did the pinning sound example and his dog immediately looked up at him and then leaned into him and rubbed his head off him to show him comfort… that was the sweetest thing 🥺…Cuteness overload! I’ve already learned so much already from this video. I remember when I use to watch his tv programme years ago all the time.
Helps to understand their pack psychology & behavior. My 2 year old female heeler/Aussie shepherd is a working dog who wants to be close and is bonded to me, we spent tons of time together her first year but now that I need to leave the house more she is pooping and peeing in the house, usually my room, gets very overly excited on walks, sometimes even excitement peeing . She has an older companion dog but her incontinence & excitement leads me to believe it's separation anxiety esp bc of her breed & how close we've been since she was weeks old .
My mom gave my dogs the unwashed clothes of mine for them to sniff when I was away for quite a long time. It worked well to make them relax a bit. Try it! ❤️
The moment I first watched this video, my immediate thought was that I couldn't do it. I was too attached to my dog and thought the training was primarily for humans. However, I now understand the true purpose of training: to bring happiness and well-being to both humans and dogs! Thank you for showing me how humans and dogs can come together and live harmoniously. 😊
Wow I tried this one time and it worked I’m so shocked ! lol ! My dog used to growl and bark like he was loco ! Thank u Cesar I will practice this a lot I have a blue heeler and he’s big but very smart !
This is soooo helpful! I’ve been wondering why my dog is so attached to me. I’ve been teaching him that getting off is point of reference and coming to me is a good thing when I should not be doing that. So grateful for this!
Thank you, thank you, for teaching us what to do. I ‘m feeling super guilty for leaving my Pitbull in a pet hotel for thanksgiving he’s close to me & definitely has separation anxiety & so do I with him. 😔 It makes me really sad to have to leave him he’s never been alone since we brought him home as a puppy. I will be working on this technique.
My pit bull chewed a hole through the wall trying to get out because I left,😢 now we crate him but he still has separation anxiety. I’ve tried everything.
I reset my relationship with my husky who had separation anxiety after my alpha dog died. Aside from her needs, i Ignored her for 2 weeks and kept her outside my office while I worked. She cried for 2 weeks, but then stopped and I reintroduced myself as her friend while being cautious not to baby her too much so as to have a repeat of behaviour. It worked.
@@PamelaWildman-Williams dogs like humans, need to learn how to self soothe. If you always rescue them When they desire an emotion then they become dependent on you for said needs and never learn on their own. You actually do a tremendous disservice to them. @@PamelaWildman-WilliamsNo, clearly you don’t understand. You obviously put your own needs before that of your dog. This is typical and often the case with clients in dog training. You seek to cater to your own emotions, thinking you’re helping the dog, but your over sensitivity to your needy emotions blind you from the actual needs of a canine (and child as the psychology is quite similar). Honestly, you’re absurd and ignorant with regard to basic child/dog psychology. Good luck with that. The rest of your armchair analysis is laughable and far removed from the truth.
Hi Dave, Yes… she goes forward after the trauma. I don’t like to think you are a cold unfeeling person who does not have the capacity for empathy - no - I’m sure you are a good and decent person who simply is on life’s learning curve and who cares about humans and animals. I worked in rescue years ago and fostered dogs. I had one of the sweetest dogs with severe separation anxiety. She was with me for a few weeks because my elderly mother lived with me and was home 24/7. The dog was placed in several homes but went crazy, was extremely destructive when left alone. I’ve followed your principles a long time Cesar, 2010. This is the first time I hear you say you train the human, not the dog. I think it’s a good idea to have the human think calm at all times, because the dog picks up on your energy! And then he projects that back to you! It’s a mental/emotional thing. Love it 😊
I have heard you often say you train the human and not the dog. It makes 100% sense. You teach the HUMAN how to treat and respond towards the dog correctly, so that the dog then learn how to respond accordingly. Thank you Cesar.
I can relate to this. Me and my partner work from home, even before the pandemic. We spend 24/7’ with our 2 fur daughters, Athena and Aletheia…our girls. The girls even sleep with us on our bed, tucked under our blanket. It’s always been the four of us. And when my partner or me has to leave the house, we make sure the other one stays with the girls. So, when the occasional time we both have to leave the house comes, the girls have a difficult time being separated. They would cry for half an hour or so. Of course, the nanny stays with them, but the girls have a tough time adjusting. Thanks Cesar, at least now we can adjust our behavior to make things better for our girls.
My dog actually had a hard time with the quarantine. Her stomach got really upset and has a difficult time adjusting. It was so strange! I definitely am worried about how she will adjust once the quarantine had lifted.
During the pandemic I worked from home i put up a gate to my home office. The dog was not allowed there. She could sense and hear that I was there but that she could not follow. She mostly went to the other side of the house and took a nap. She learnt to relax when she is alone. Never a problem with separation anymore
Thanks for the advice! I very recently adopted a puppy who is a very clingy boy so I’m hoping this helps us out early on before it becomes a major issue and causes him a ton of stress.
I came here Cesar, mostly because you're the only person I trust. But I came here because my pup will follow my every step. She was shouting the house down in her crate tonight, which is unusual for her. I swear to you, this was going on on for 20 mins or so. The minute I played this video just for me, in a separate room from her, she was quiet. Immediately! It was so weird. Thank you, for being you. That is it ❤
my pup kaya also same thing but at night she is good and quite at the day its the thing i work from home but can be all the time with her so she is in her traning cage where her bed and toys and water and potty pads at the day she go crazy unlike in night she is quite and good i cant keep an eye on her at the day cuz i work but in free time in the day like in breaks i take (every 4 hours ) i let her free roam the house while i keep an eye on her and even sometime (most time) i play with her petting her and guve her sometime some treats
Ik u only trust Cesar but I did this with my pup and it worked. I kept his Crate beside my bed even if I laid down he would start freaking out because he couldn’t see me so I left my leg out of my bed and rested it beside the crate for about 5 minutes I would take it back in bed slowly. I did this for about a week each time I’d move the crate further and further from my bed. Eventually with potty training I was able to remove the crate completely and he would sleep beside my bed.
I adopted a stray that my friends dad found, and he's the cutest little bastard ever. However, whenever I left he would freak the hell out. He ate through the carpet and insulation down to the concrete in 4 different locations, chewed the trim off the front door and my bedroom door, and chewed straight through a couch cushion. I couldn't figure out how to stop it. Then, my gf at the time moved in with her dog... and I found out he just needed another dog to be around. He doesn't freak out now, he has 2 sisters :-)

J H this is LITERALLY what I came home to today. She had ripped through the carpet and insulation in both of my rooms, got into her food bad, and trash.
this is a lovely stay exercise yet it does not address the owner leaving the house. Expecting the dog to stay on the "point of reference" for 8 hrs while you go to work is unrealistic . Yet it is a good video for stay.
I don’t think it’s ever possible to address separation for hours on end for a dog. Dogs don’t and will never have that understanding. No matter how many times you come home. It’s all about rationality and the awareness of time. They don’t have that specific awareness as humans do. If a dog is separated for a long time without his family, it’s not natural. A human going to work, school, etc. is not a natural experience for a dog to go through. There may be no other alternative than just a distraction for the dog until you return. What kind of distraction is appropriate for the dog during your absence is the challenge.
I really enjoy hearing you teach. It helps me understand dogs. I have been a fan for over a decade and I have read all of your books. Now I help people and their dogs! I recommend you to everyone that asks me about dog behavior (I am a dog groomer btw not even a dog trainer) lol sorry for the long comment. Stay calm
Had a huge stuffed animal (a dachsund) and after months and months of my beagle's separation anxiety, I just put it near his head when I would go out. Believe it or not, it really helped him calm down. I was totally shocked.
When the dog is smarter than the human..the dog trains the human to what they want ..i have been in animal rescue for 50 yrs..i have had to retrain many..including the rescue dog with me now
right? i just adopted a dog and she follows me EVERYWHERE. I know we have to work on stay, but like if i'm standing up to get off the couch, she's already standing ready to jump down and follow me
@@taypo13 say stay before you move/standing up in the house. If your dog moves, correct them, take your time.(dont say "stay" too much. ) If they stay, say stay again and treat them.
@@MonstreCharmante yes and also when the dog goes to break from the command (will happen many times while training of course) make a quick noise to get it's attention again and then proceed again with the command until they understand
I love you Cesar! so amazing! your relationship of trust, love, and understanding with your dogs!! I also appreciate that you're not loading your dog up with treats every single second! It seems like all the animal trainers nowadays are doing that. At one puppy class, I gave treats whenever instructed, but had to leave the class before it was even over because I had used a WHOLE BAG of treats! this cannot be good! they call it "positive reinforcement training."
You are 100% right! This was a waste of time! Working with a trained dog to show what the end result should look like is fine for a minute or two. The bulk of this video should be training a dog and its owner that has anxiety issues!!! This was just "Showing Off" a well trained dog. No value!
Google the phrase I posted above. It's an excellent post on how to keep your dog calm by using emotional control exercises. They work really well for separation anxiety.
I love how you explain WHY the dog does/feels what he does. It really helps to be more patient with them rather than getting annoyed.

Absolutely.
There’s many people that don’t have patience and just give up.

So sorry you had this experience that was so upsetting and made you feel guilty for going out.
Stay strong with your dog ❤❤
Its a sign he loves you
Hi Janet, I Hope you’re okay?!
The moment when you realise Cesar Millan is now training millions more humans than dogs.......mind blown!
He always has
He's a dog behaviorist. He never trained dogs. He explains the dog's behavior to humans so they can understand how to communicate with them
Would you say the joke was partly or entirely lost on you? 😂
Sean Briggs finally someone opened humans eyes to the love and dedication dogs give us ❤️
@@princess_reaper He does train dogs. It's just not the core of his job, nor is it the core of any behaviorist. They are specialized in the human to animal relationship, but still are able to train or educate dogs. In a matter of hours actually. The humans are way longer to train and educate that's the issue most behaviourists face lmao
This is why Cesar is the best. With people slowly transitioning back to their regular schedules, the timing of this video is amazing. Thanks so much!
Joseph Dizon it could not be in a better time frame could it! He is the best
Being so recent and understanding about social distancing and always being home with your dog, the time will come when we do have to go back to our regular lives and our dogs need to understand it better. I learned a lot today and I’ve had dogs my whole life
He’s great.
True. My dog used to be calm when we left for work, now he stays crying a bit behind the door when we leave. 😢
I'd like to see this done with a dog that is experiencing separation anxiety already, This dog appears well trained calm & not anxious one bit.
Esactly ots bull I'd like see him do that to my dog.
@@pedroassuncao200 not my dog I've tryed everything I seriously have .
Cesar is simply the best. I could listen to him talk about dogs all day.

Thank you, Cesar, I used your method and trained my dog for 6 weeks. Now she has overcome separation anxiety ❤
yay! i started this traing today 👍
Starting today ❤
My son’s lab had terrible separation anxiety so I took the easy way out. I bought a huge kennel and adopted him a friend. Now they hang out in the kennel together when we have to leave and he is calm, never tries to bust out or chew up the tray. Ha! Not a solution everyone can use, I know. Worked like magic, though.😅
Together in a kennel I’ve heard is a bad idea.
I really want to try this but I don’t get it. When do you treat him? Because as soon as I walk away he’ll follow
So I watched this for the lesson, I will watch again and again to admire and take design ideas from his home
That's funny! We were just saying the same thing! Not super keen on the green couch though.

How did you do that?... I'm trying to get my dog to be cool when I'm away at work. I'm a new dog mom.
I do the same thing ❤
I adopted a very seperation anxious dog. He can have his eyes on me, and still whine. Working hard on retraining us both as it's been 7 years without a dog. ❤
I don't do single dogs anymore. I get so much more out of my dog's love for each other and watching them play. I can leave knowing they are content in each other's company and I return to such a calm, content energy. I'd never go back to having a single dog.
I got another dog for her to have company and a friend but they are not thrilled with each other and then they started fighting and I love them both and this is heartbreaking because I don't want either of them to feel scared and hurting each other.

This video helped me SO MUCH with my dogs separation anxiety.

@@brycewillis6628 I don’t crate my dog. I don’t believe in that
I just wanted to say that putting a dog in a crate isn’t a bad thing.
My dog is not treat motivated. Treats do nothing when he feels anxious.

My dad told me that when I was a child. I have never seen him since then.
Thank you for this amazing insight in a dogs world. Our dog has separation anxiety bad. Has literally chewed a hole in the wall trying to leave.
I got an impact crate for my Pittie Zahra
American houses are a mystery to me :-O
This was a perfect explanation of how the dog understands being alone!
Try it! ❤️
Nice tips!
Cesar, my nephew was born yesterday and we named him after you!
It worked.
I just wonder if she would feel like a human might feel - and die a little bit inside. Does that sound daft?
@@PamelaWildman-Williams dogs like humans, need to learn how to self soothe. If you always rescue them
When they desire an emotion then they become dependent on you for said needs and never learn on their own. You actually do a tremendous disservice to them. Dogs need to learn how to be alone sometimes because it’s going to happen at some point or another.
@@davem5588 I understand your point and wonder about empathy. I just hope you’re not in the caring or helping professions. No offence intended but I am and see from a different perspective. The ability to Self-soothe comes from a foundation of security. To be honest, the term ‘ a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing’. I sincerely feel concerned about your cold heartedness and absence of empathy. You could be a dangerous person to know.
People and certainly animals, are vulnerable to us and people can accidentally bully the weaker … not because they are mean but because they don’t realise. Bless you Dave for being so open and I hope you are encouraged. I wish you every good thing 😀
I worked in rescue years ago and fostered dogs. I had one of the sweetest dogs with severe separation anxiety. She was with me for a few weeks because my elderly mother lived with me and was home 24/7. The dog was placed in several homes but went crazy, was extremely destructive when left alone. I don't know what happened, but I never forgot her. I am forwarding this video to my grandchildren in college. I know they will have pets throughout their lives and want them to know how dogs think and how to help them. You are so knowledgeable. Thanks for caring and sharing.
Do you have any books or videos that cover training a puppy from day one? Not just for one issue but everything.
I left today for one hour, came back to pillows shredded, mattress ripped, mind you, she is a rescue. I will try this method.
How’d it work

I had no idea why my dog followed me all day long. Now I know that it is normal for the dog. Great training video thanks so much!😃
This is great! My mom has been teaching me to "wait" on the front porch. I am doing great however at times I get anxiety though when I see a squirrel or a cat. I'm learning little by little and she gives me a treat :)
Awe what a good little pup you are! Wishing you and your mom the best ❤
Beautiful house, happy for you, Cesar & all the lucky dogs that live with you. 🌷
My nephew grew up with a husky. The dog traveled 2.9 miles to the school my nephew attends. Twice. I thought it was amazing being that the dog has never been there before. Cesar, how did the dog know? RIP Simba
Surprised that I have been already doing a lot of it on our own. Just need to polish it up and practice!
My son's golden Labrador Angel, has severe anxiety..I looked after her while they went on a trip for one night..she followed me everywhere and follows my son everywhere..I'm not sure if this technique will help but I'm sure my son will try anything to make Angel's life much more comfortable..as a dog owner and family member, it's heartbreaking to see what dogs go through. Thanks for these helpful tips..I've watched your series on tv and love what you do ❤️ watching from Australia
That separation anxiety lesson is exactly what I needed to learn. I'm going to work on this for sure.
Fur daughters..
Holy fuck dude. Grow up.
This is great and I am going to try this tonight. The only problem is that my apartment is so small... practically the size of his kitchen.
I don’t know why the first few mins of explanation made me teary eyed. I love my dog so much!!
I have to watch this again because I was distracted by that gorgeous house! Love the jewel tone accents!
Marlee SP Agreed!! I was especially taken with the green VELVET sofa!! Gorgeous!!
I was literally just about to say the same!!😂😂 where is this Cape Cod stunner!?💜💜

Me too 😂. Beautiful home! Cesar works hard for it. Thank you Cesar for sharing your knowledge and love for animals.
why is every video so incredibly educational and perfect❤️i love you!
Wow....I had no clue about why my puppy has anxiety. Im definitly going to try this approach. It will help a ton. Thanks so much
Thank you Cesar. The love of my life is a work of constant struggle. But, I leaning from you. I'm fallowing your advice too.
Omg don’t tell me this 😂 because I was just thinking about getting a brother or sister for mine to see if the situation would get better
@@fridahojeda856 I wish I would have done that before I had over $1000 in damage at my apartment... lol. Trust me, it ends up being cheaper and easier to have two dogs... And more fun! :-) It's also wayyy less stressful to the dogs if they have a "friend" for when you're either away or can't play with them.
Get a 2nd dog!! lol.

I have a lot of the damage he did, with the plastic bottom to the cage ripped into a thousand pieces, or the carpet and subfloor below it totally gone, as well as everything else.... But I think you can just take my word for it, lol.
But, regardless... He's worth every bit of it. I love this lil bastard :-) and he has 2 sisters hes with now.
J H this is LITERALLY what I came home to today. She had ripped through the carpet and insulation in both of my rooms, got into her food bad, and trash.

Thank you so much, I was wondering about why my dog following me all the time....now I understand the reason. Ty Cesar ✨🌷🤗
My puppy was taken from his litter and mom at 4 weeks old. I believe that affected him. So he wants to be with me 24/7.
That doesn't change the technique you need to use.
this is a lovely stay exercise yet it does not address the owner leaving the house. Expecting the dog to stay on the "point of reference" for 8 hrs while you go to work is unrealistic . Yet it is a good video for stay.
I was confused About that too. What do you do when you go to work? Do they go in the point of reference?
I don’t think it’s ever possible to address separation for hours on end for a dog. Dogs don’t and will never have that understanding. No matter how many times you come home. It’s all about rationality and the awareness of time. They don’t have that specific awareness as humans do. If a dog is separated for a long time without his family, it’s not natural. A human going to work, school, etc. is not a natural experience for a dog to go through. There may be no other alternative than just a distraction for the dog until you return. What kind of distraction is appropriate for the dog during your absence is the challenge.
Kongs help a looot and excercise previous to your exit are great as well
I really enjoy hearing you teach.
Thank you so much ! I am so going to try this. My dog gets way too anxious when I start putting my shoes on and follows me to the door.
The thing is I just always want my dog with me. We love each other. 🐩🐾💖
I think it’s natural for us to be with other people all the time too. But our society is not very natural.
When the dog is smarter than the human..the dog trains the human to what they want ..i have been in animal rescue for 50 yrs..i have had to retrain many..including the rescue dog with me now
This is so helpful! Cesar, you're a true animal healer, probably human healer too!
you need to do this with a dog that does not know how.
right? i just adopted a dog and she follows me EVERYWHERE. I know we have to work on stay, but like if i'm standing up to get off the couch, she's already standing ready to jump down and follow me

Great info. You are consistent and impactful. I trust Caesar Milan! How hard is it to trust someone these days?! Keep up the great work Sir!
Thank you for this. Comming from a less than week old owner of a beautiful 20 month old Brittany that howls everytime I leave. :(
Did that work?
I'd like to see this done with a dog that is experiencing separation anxiety already, This dog appears well trained calm & not anxious one bit.
You are 100% right! This was a waste of time! Working with a trained dog to show what the end result should look like is fine for a minute or two. The bulk of this video should be training a dog and its owner that has anxiety issues!!! This was just "Showing Off" a well trained dog. No value!
