I agree they are often used incorrectly and unintentionally. I also feel they are hard to pull off well. Personally I also don’t like them except for specific circumstances. Design should feel effortless yet intentional and not just do things because one can I love your point that an accent wall is a bit of a misnomer. It’s really more of a focal point created through paint
Could be timeless depending on the type of enhancement like the paint color or architectural detail that's been added. Board and batton, grass cloth wallpaper, plaster or shiplap may be more timless than say the geometric patterned molding. Also bright red paint used to be considered a super trendy focal/accent wall color, but may now be comsidered dated. I think it just really depends.
I wouldn't call it a mistake just because she says so. Design your place the way you want it, not based on what someone on the internet tells you that it's right or wrong. Maybe they're the wrong ones. 😊
Over a decade ago, I saw a feature “accent” wall and liked the idea so I painted one wall of my bedroom a few shades darker than the other walls. It’s a warm brown SW Nomadic Desert and the other walls are SW Kilim beige. I still love it today and it’s been easy to make some decor changes to freshen the look. The featured wall is center view when entering the room the bed against it and only has a window to one side. The room is small and square and this color combination and decor makes it so cozy. I also got brave and painted an ombré feature wall in another room which I am debating on changing but find it hard to let go for now. I felt like such an artist painting it lol and I love the colors and it is something unique and special for me.
I installed board and batten in my newly remodeled bathroom . Painted it bright white and the palest of light blue above. The size of the room appears twice as large. Love it and zero regrets!!! People can't believe the transformation. 😊
I might have made some of the biggest mistakes you talked about. I did an accent wall and liked it so much that I accented the borders of another wall to tie the rooms together. it was a walk-through to the rest of the house but with the accent, it looks like it's one big room. I really like it.
Accent walls can look great or ugly, depends on how it’s done. I personally like to have an accent wall or focal wall in the living room but as you said don’t have too many things on and around it. Thanks Julie, I love your tips.
Julie, you do such a remarkable job at delivering thoughtful design insight and advice, while also kindly encouraging your followers to embrace their own style. I so appreciate your responses to people in the comments who say they “broke the rules” but love the space they’ve created. You’re awesome. Thank you for doing this work in such a wonderful way! ❤️
I've been a long time subscriber of your channel and do know your dislike for accent. I wasn't so convinced of it in your other videos. But today, I get the message you are conveying. Loud and clear, make it intentional, let there be a flow and don't just paint a wall because you don't know what to do . Thanks Julie!
I have painted the entire wall front to back in a soft lovely celadon color. What this does is divide the big living areas of my home w the bedrooms n personal areas of the house. It's perfect! I don't like a small accent wall - for me it serves no purpose. Thanks Julie!
I just love my solid white ceiling wood floors ! Everything else is optional. All in all I think you should just do what your budget and you love allows! Home should be your happy haven !
soo happy I watched this! my sister in law recommended 2 peaked walls as accents. I thought it would look weird but I was going to defer to her as she calls herself an interior design expert.
It’s a preference tbh. I’ve seen it done well with peaked walls when the ceiling was also painted to coordinate with the space. Think about ALL the surfaces, not just those accent walls 👍☺️
Thank you so much for this video, Julie! I'm typically late to trends, so I discovered the board-and-batten x different-colored "accent wall" phenomenon a few weeks ago. While I was excited at the idea at first, I realized it's not only easy to mess up, but it can be cumbersome if, like me, you like to switch up your decor often. People say you can just paint it over, but that costs money and time and isn't feasible for everyone. I also watched a different video by an interior designer who said you have to at least try to match your wall with major items in the room, e.g., your comforter-otherwise it can look random rather than intentional. Also thank you for criticizing the name! I hadn't thought about it before, but I did always wonder who decided the word "accent" made the most sense. I'll refer to it as a focal wall from now on. Thank you for everything you share with us. God bless you and your family!
Thank you for watching G! Don’t get me wrong, board and batten can be stunning in the right space. I’ve done it myself and seen it done spectacularly, but yes- it’s definitely an investment in time, effort and money
The best UA-cam designer strikes again and just in time. I have a galley style kitchen in my 780 ft condo with an open plan living room/kitchen and was considering doing the interior galley part a different color
@@JulieKhuu you might be right! I was playing with ideas and it was hard with the open plan to keep an elegant look. I might just go ahead and keep everything white and open then use furniture and decor for color. Thanks Julie!
I tend to agree, but my daughter did a feature wall in her kitchen and it is lovely, but everything else is neutral. Many years ago, I had all the walls and ceilings in our guest bath covered in the same wallpaper and I still love it to this day. If a room could give you a warm hug when you entered, this one would do just that!
Hi Julie, I dislike feature focal walls especially if there is a fireplace, beautiful furniture,or rug. I begin decorating a room by saying this room is my canvas and my decor placement will be the show. I always glean from your instruction- thank you !!
Very good. I was contemplating to do this or not. What you asked at the beginning made sense! Why do you want an accent wall? And the truth is I don't. Thank you very, very much. I will be looking to purchase a home near the end of this year or very early next year. I will be getting in contact with you. Keep up the great work.
VERY helpful, including understanding that I am about to create a focal point. How do I choose a white that allows for a burnt orange accent wall? And for that matter, a white that goes with nature tones?
Great video as always! I recently finished a feature wall in my living/dining room and couldn't wait to show it to family and friends. I'm currently planning out my powder room update and trying to decide between a feature wall or all over wallpaper 😅
I'm glad I saw this before I tackled my dining room. The wall I wanted to do has an irregular ceiling and a doorway lol. Crisis averted! Thanks so much for these designer tips!
gurl, today I painted a focal wall in our apartment it looks awesome. when everything is white. I think depends on how you do them and the style of the home. but I also agree with your point of view.
Hmmm, I really enjoyed your video and agree wholeheartedly in 98% of what you said. I love colour but, struggle with painting a whole room darker colour. I have frequently use a feature wall(agreed) to satisfy my colour fix, trying to execute it well. The more I know the more indecisive I get!😳
It helps to print out inspiration images and look at them daily Linda. That helps me lock down my decision- by the end of a week, I either love it or hate it 😆
Yes! I have done stage sets for church productions for 25 yrs but can't pick a color for my walls..I think it's because we have to live in it for a long time. We also may feel more pressure for others to come see it & be disappointed in our abilities. Idk, but it's frustrating to get stuck on it for sure.😉
I'm planning on putting a dark brick panel focal wall behind the 75" TV, console, and piers in my "man cave". When turned off, TV's are big black holes, so the furniture and wall behind my set are all going to be dark to mitigate that effect. I'll use some can type up-lights for ambient lighting, and puck lights to highlight the dark pieces displayed on the lower shelves.
I never thought to do something to the ceiling! Interesting! Especially since for me in my space it's a full square without windows or doors. In your video one was painted a pink color. Do you think a painted ceiling will make a small living look bigger? If so, what different colors would look best? Thanks!
I've been thinking of doing a feature wall in my living room but it's tough in a condo with the living/dining/kitchen all attached. If you have a video for condo layouts, please let me know! Your videos are great. Thank you for sharing your ideas.😊
Maybe do the focal wall where you want it and define the space with a large plant wall hanging lights or dramatic floor standing lights or folding wall separators etc. then you can have the focal wall define that space or even more dramatic tie it all together with one big focal wall going through all three rooms. And use the other walls to complement it. Don’t forget the ceiling. Check out 1950’s modern design layouts frank lloyd wright etc to see what they did. Watch movies set designs too. North by northwest just about any Doris day movies. Read design mags from 1950’s. But update the look! Good Luck🍀 !
Julie, I trust your good taste and now I need your advice. I have always had my house with different colors in most of the rooms; Now I am painting my entire house with SW Alabaster but I have a question and that is that I have a dining room wall with sconces and a gold mirror and I am not sure if the alabaster coordinates well with the accessories. I would like to have your opinion so as not to fail. Now, this wall has the color of BM “Caliente” but I would like to change it. Julie, I wish you could help me. Thank you🌷
I'm goint to paint a wall with a structure brush and shimmering glitter, but in the same color as the other walls. I hope it turns out nice and reflects light. As for "accent walls": I painted 2 walls in the bedroom teal because on one is the head of the bed and the other will become an open warderobe. I like the warderobe to pop out. It's more a mood and not an accent at all.
I believe design is a "personal opinion" whilst creating a space one feels comfortable in. Don't be intimidated or limit yourself by one's thoughts on design. It is okay to create a space that is visually stimulating to your specific taste. "You're" the one that has to live in you're own personal space.
Last night I painted a dusty green behind floating shelves and was worried about accent wall issues, only to see in this video it really is an accent in a coffee niche, not a focal point of the kitchen. Whew 😅
I want a black accent wall in my living room because I love the colour black, but don’t want to paint all four walls black and I like the idea of the tv blending into the wall when it’s switched off
I agree with you. A lot of accent walls will go out of style and you never know where you might have to sell. Future buyers might not like your choice of an accent wall.
Hey Julie, I’d appreciate your comments on decorating a very small powder room (unfortunately with a window). I just can’t seem to get the right design or plan for modern /glam style. It really shouldn’t be this hard but geez!!!!
Hey Julie this was very helpful. I have a feature wall in Sherwin Williams Black magic behind my bed. And in my living room I painted the fireplace wall in black also. I'm sorry but I love it. My bedroom feels grown and sexy and the black fireplace wall helps the TV blend in. But I am glad you educated me on the terms.
I was considering one in our primary bedroom. I had one years ago. I changed it. I am looking at re painting the room and was considering it again. This weekend I thought you know why am I considering doing this? The colour choices would be nice but the wall itself is a bit of a strange angle. I looked back at old pictures and decided NO it won't work and I won't like it. Instead I am painting the room the entire same colour
This video came at the right time for me! I'm moving into my new townhouse closer to the downtown area and I'm so excited to decorate it with class!! Love!
I was thinking light grey on the small wall that the fireplace is on then a black for the mantel and marble tile around the fireplace with all the other walls off white with black trim and white or black doors what do you think?
The older I get the more I think " less is more". Less colors in a room leaves more creativity to decorate for each season, and Ive cut way down on those decorations too. For me accent walls can't be too vivid and only needed in a rare style of room. Its funny as we have children how our style preferences become more safety conscious. ( I hate escutcheons! They get jabbed under my fingernails & ouch! I also used to like ornate carved wood furniture, now It's too time consuming to polish. Time & experiences change us for sure.😉 I also love the handles with a curved edge, they are painless!🙂
I have a bathroom which is tiled 2/3up with old tiled nut I'm good order. Going to get them painted white. All new white are with silver handles in this room.. Tiles on floor large pale grey with muted white squiggles. My dilemma...as bathroom now is overwhelmingly white was going to paint upper wall above tiles to ceiling in soft pale grey. But your video has made me question my decision. What should I now do?
How about wallpaper? If you want to stick to neutrals, try vinyl wet-rated grasscloth. They make them in every color you can imagine if you want to stay in the grey family but add some nice texture Janine 🩶
Any tips for an outdoor lounge area that is relatively small , 8’ x 15’? Your videos a helpful and the topics come up at the right time for my remodel project
Well I have made some of the mistakes. I was wondering why HGTV was calling it an accent wall? I do like a feature wall(correct term), but sometimes it is hard to find a wall that works as you described. Many people live in tiny homes. I did do a feature wall in my dining room--but alas it has a slider to a deck and a couple windows, but I carefully planned it out and had my accent pieces(see how I used that 😂)first, rug, art, table accents, furniture. So it blends well together. It is a nice shade of red because It is kind of dark. I debated about painting it something else, but I am hearing it is coming back! 🤣🤣🤣 I have cherry wood furniture and some walnut, red/green/gold/cream, rug, original art with bold colors and cherry wood frames, some eclectic African art, b, some handmade pottery, etc. Books on an old vintage buffet. The art is portraits, landscape with Fall colors, impressionist paintings. Nice family portraits with gold leaf frames(classic old world frames) A cool classic table runner and a nice ceramic/stone/hand painted centerpiece. I like to put chunky candle holders on it with some nice fat candles. I like it, but it is a bit bold. It has a more classic old library feel(it has my upright studio piano in a cherry wood stain). Will see if the red stays. I would have to get a new rug, art, etc. First. Which would cost some money so I may just live with it for a while. I have debated about painting it the same as the frontroom which is a warm cream(used to be a dark taupe with red undertones), but would have to get new furnishings(accents). I love the tips, but not sure if I would give up a feature wall if it had a window or two. I think it depends on the room. 😊
@@JulieKhuu It is personalized. Above my piano is a photo of me and hubby with a nice chunky gold leaf frame. Other pictures on my piano. Some strange hanging art(given to us a good luck large amulet in green jade and wine red macreme) A didgeridoo sitting upright in a corner. Some floor giraffes (mom and baby). Art on the walls, an old 1940's upright radio(really cool from hubby's grandma). So I have a real eclectic mix. Odd, but personalized. None of my paintings hanging yet. I do have one I finished of hubby and our son(when he was little). I think I will see if it will work in the living room. It is like 42 x 36 I think. I need to put it in its frame. Acrylic on canvas.). Personalized is the way to go for a cozy home. My opinion anyway. 😊
I have a feature wall behind the headboard. It’s beautiful wallpaper by Osborne and little. The rest of the room is fairly plain to allow it to be the feature. I agree that feature walls should be an uninterrupted wall and not have windows/ doorways etc.
Hi Julie! Do you think wheat 🌾 in a vase is okay if we live in a farming area with that being our views? I forgot to ask you on an earlier video on that!
I absolutely love the first wallpaper that you showed with the long dining table and white chairs. Any idea what this is or which company may offer something similar? I am looking, no luck so far. Thank you!
Thanks for this video. I wanted to paint the dining wall Benjamin Moore "dinner party" as an accent in an open concept cottage. The rest of the walls and ceiling has pine tongue and groove (except the separated open living room has new drywall that I need a paint color for too). After your video I'm thinking that I shouldn't make it an accent wall because there is a window in the middle of the wall and you mentioned that it's best to have a solid wall if doing an accent wall. Do you recommend an off-white paint color instead (no color)? The window has white casings already.
I've recently discovered ur channel and am in love! Ur style speaks to my soul! My husband and i are in the process of building a 5k sqft home right now, and the main floor is an open floor plan with a huuuuuge kitchen, two-story-high-ceiling living room 19x18ft, and an expansive dining room. The living room has an electric fireplace with the "chimney" going up the entire 17ft up, and im thinking to accent that chimney with a charcoal gray (the rest of the walls will be a nice cozy light gray).. Im going to have 10ft long matte black chandeliers in the foyer and living room (all hardware is matte black too) so now after watching this video I'm thinking, would that make it 2 focal points if the chandelier is black and the fireplace is dark gray, and might they clash? Or is it ok to have a light gray base throughout the house, and have like the black stainless steel appliances, gray drapes, black knobs, black lighting fixtures to tie in with the fireplace feature wall..? Any tips? OH, and: the dining room has 2 walls, one is all windows, and the second is 13 feet of empty space. Should I paint it the same charcoal gray as I want to paint the fireplace feature-wall in the living room? They would be diagonal from each other, 25 feet apart
If you want the fireplace to be a feature, let it stand alone and don’t coordinate any other walls to that finish. If you want a more coordinated space and let it be all about the lighting, I would swap the black fixtures out for brass or nickel. Something to contrast with the grey Elaine! Hope that helps, thank you for watching 🙏☺️
Hey there, great youtube channel! I would love to bring up a request for a new video that you can consider. I was searching in your channel but did not find one: That is how do you organise an interior design project? You have a great video on the steps you take but how do you mange all of it and get out of overwhelm. This can be a lot to plan say if you just purchases a new home (like me) that is still in construction mode and allows you to be very flexible. Flexibility is great but it can come with overwhelm of ohh my where to start and how to manage all the pieces, what timeline to give exedra especially if you want to do most or all of it yourself. best regards Julia
This is an excellent question and would make an awesome new video Lifou! Let me work on it- it’s obviously different for every client and every project, but I’ll try to fine tune it 👍🏻☺️
I have knotty pine on one wall was wondering if on tv wall I could do a accent wall. We do have cathedral ceilings. Was thinking like a board n Barton in a darker color. What you think??
I’m wondering if I can paint one end of my living room - where there is a monstrous ugly 22ft red brick fireplace - as a “feature wall”? The house is open concept, so the rest of the living room has to be lighter in color, but would it be too much to paint that one wall darker, to sort of frame the fireplace?
I’m embarking on a project with my foyer. I have 18ft ceiling with double 8ft front doors. My walls are white and just painted the interior of front door black, which is stunning. I plan on painting wall with the door a light gray pulling from shade of gray from floor tiles and thinking it should be quite lovely. What say you Julie?
I say paint all 4 walls of that foyer, not just the entry wall Debbie. The double doors alone already draw attention to it, you don’t need a gray wall to compete
@@JulieKhuu thanks for your feedback!! Did you mean paint all walls gray, I’m not sure so I may just leave as is for now with white walls. The foyer had seemed like it needed something but the black doors might have done the trick. Thanks
Could you please make a video on how to design fire place wall with high ceiling. I have a fire place with windows on either sides and a high ceiling. Should I go for board and batten? wall paper? tiles? shiplap? or anything else? Want to opt for something unique.
This is a design decision you will have to make Keerthi. If the ceiling is straight (not vaulted), everything you mentioned can work. Save images you’re inspired by and find the common theme. That should make the design direction more apparent to you.
Thank for a great video. I like seing accent walls but i dont do them as i feel them too permanent. Il someone who like to switch and get bored fast so i prefer something a bit more versatile. I have a mini home gym and really dont know how to incorporate my équipement in my design (barbell, set of kettlebel, weight best etc ). I used to had them behind the door in my room but felt it was too much active energy. I have an open space appartement and would like to create a gym nook/corner. And ideas please?
I’d love a video about rooms with too many doors! My living room has three doors, and archway opening to the dining room and a large window. So hard to figure out furniture with no empty walls
I have one Anneke- it’s in the awkward space series. Watch the one with long and narrow rooms and L-shaped spaces. I dive deep into multiple openings and passages ☺️
@@JulieKhuu I’m excited to check it out. I love my condo (my first home I own) but there have been lots of challenges. From too many doors to room just a few feet too big in an awkward way. It’s been great to have your videos as I problem solve each one
I have been wanting a (soft) feature wall in my bedroom. There is no other real focal point in my bedroom. I would like the paint-only wall behind my bedroom to be more interesting. No windows, no cut outs, doors, niches etc. I had been considering a LARGE SCALE peel and release wallpaper, or one with a subtle TEXTURE but it is SO EXPENSIVE and my wall is large! I have decided against anything wood because I have white board and batten in my hallway, living and dining room. More wood trimmed walls in my bedroom seems like "over kill" to me. My walls are a soft golden yellow with white trim, a golden solid textured rug, and a rich medium-brown wood flooring throughout (I live in Michigan and too much white in our condo with white snow and gray skies all around us for 7 months of the years...is just too much white and just too depressing for me.) I have a chalk painted vintage dresser with a beautiful natural wood tone mirror in this bedroom, black and white ticking bedspread/pillow shams over my black metal framed bed and black linen black- out curtains and horizontal, sheer blinds over our large (almost full wall size) horizontal window. This window overlooks a sunken garden with lots of green plants but also overlooks the walkway into our 6-unit condo building so having privacy at night is important at times. Green is an accent color found in the vintage dresser (the dresser is painted mostly black with accents of green and some natural wood.) I have a large wooden carved statement piece on my wall above the bed frame painted in a soft green. If I was to do the wall behind the bed, I would move the half round carved wood piece to another spot. Still looking for ideas....
You could try upholstered fabric panels instead behind the bed Donna. You wouldn’t have to address the entire wall, just a strategic large rectangular shape that covers the bed and expanse of the nightstands. Check my bedroom videos for more looks like this! Thank you for watching ☺️🙏🏻
Okay, I have a question. I want to do a feature wall in my office. Would it look bad if I put the feature wall in front of my desk instead of behind my desk? Does that make sense? For example, you mentioned for bedrooms, to make sure your bed goes against the feature wall- so I was curious about an office situation.
Same for home offices. Think about the focal wall that frames the room, not the other way around. Unless that’s your intent of course Carrie! Do what makes sense for your space
My son has just gone off to Uni so I want to decorate his room while he is gone. I want to put a feature wall behind his bed but don’t know whether to stop at the first crease or second crease which is at a 45 degree angle (so it would look like a canopy over the bed). What are your thoughts?
All walls in my bedroom has windows, doors or a doorway..lol. I still wanted to paint the wall behind the bed in a deep colour, though I knew full well the door on the side will break the symmetry. Since the ceiling is at 9 feet, there is a considerably large space above the door. So I have been thinking whether I should may be display something in that space?
Don’t try to fill up every negative space with something Aleena. You determine what you want the eyes to be drawn to. Doesn’t sound like “blank space above the door” has any purpose, what do you think?
@@JulieKhuu Thank you for replying Julie. I didn't actually mean to display something above the door just to fill the space. Infact, I have yet to add anything to that wall, because the asymmetry with the door has been bugging me. I wanted someway to extend that contrast of the door upto the ceiling, so that the rest of the wall might look like one solid wall?
Hi Julie I do have an accent wall in the master bedroom. It’s really a focal wall meant to be seen from the opposite side en-suite. It looks very nice. Navy wallpaper with copper tones branch motif. It’s from perigold. I did it to complete a navy white motif already in the room. I took down the hanging photos of my children and placed those on the nightstands. I agree that the focal wall should stand out and doors and windows and even artwork can interfere with that impact. But Thank you😊 for the advice on ceiling work to compliment it. I will be thinking about that now not sure what to do yet. I agree it would complete the look! I would be interested in a show about dining rooms and storage of the things we use in there. Hosting time is around the corner and this would be a great time to hear about designers thoughts on how to decorate and design them for gatherings and what accessories you think are most valuable to have in our dining rooms. Have a great week! Margaret
What’s your take on accent walls? Dated or timeless? Weigh in below!
I agree they are often used incorrectly and unintentionally. I also feel they are hard to pull off well. Personally I also don’t like them except for specific circumstances. Design should feel effortless yet intentional and not just do things because one can
I love your point that an accent wall is a bit of a misnomer.
I have a feature wall in my office … would love your feedback … great tips !!
Timeless. Adapted to a design style effectively it can elevate a room beyond routine and/or predictable.
Please can you do a piece on utility rooms plus a very small area with toilet and sink beside it.
Well, I made just about every mistake you highlight in this video lol. But I'm sticking with my design choice for now 🙂
All that matters is that you love it Kathleen ☺️
I am with you. I hate living in other people's boxes. Do what makes you happy and you are the one living in the house.
😭😭😭me too
I only have enough budget for 1 wall 😮💨 + living in an apartment makes me not wanna do too much work 😅
I wouldn't call it a mistake just because she says so. Design your place the way you want it, not based on what someone on the internet tells you that it's right or wrong. Maybe they're the wrong ones. 😊
You start off by saying you dont like accent walls. But all the photos of accent walls that were posted convinced me that I loved them.
That’s awesome Helena 👍☺️
She does like them! She just calls it a feature wall.

If you still love it, it was the right move for sure Marcella 🙌🏻 You sound like a true artist!
I installed board and batten in my newly remodeled bathroom . Painted it bright white and the palest of light blue above. The size of the room appears twice as large. Love it and zero regrets!!! People can't believe the transformation. 😊
Oooo love this idea!!! White and a super pale colour!!
I might have made some of the biggest mistakes you talked about. I did an accent wall and liked it so much that I accented the borders of another wall to tie the rooms together. it was a walk-through to the rest of the house but with the accent, it looks like it's one big room. I really like it.
Then you made a very intentional move which is the whole point of design Armenta 🙌🏻
Accent walls can look great or ugly, depends on how it’s done. I personally like to have an accent wall or focal wall in the living room but as you said don’t have too many things on and around it. Thanks Julie, I love your tips.
Less is more in the case of feature walls Daizy 👍🏻☺️

Thank you for watching G! Don’t get me wrong, board and batten can be stunning in the right space. I’ve done it myself and seen it done spectacularly, but yes- it’s definitely an investment in time, effort and money
The best UA-cam designer strikes again and just in time. I have a galley style kitchen in my 780 ft condo with an open plan living room/kitchen and was considering doing the interior galley part a different color
I think it’s a much more elegant look without it, especially in an open concept plan
Yes! Always clue into how the room *feels* first! Sounds lovely Melisha! 😍
I like the clarification of accent walls vs a feature and it makes more sense. The idea of an accent behind a bookshelf sounds lovely....
Accent walls should be secondary to the big picture Sibongile 👍🏻☺️
I did feature wall at home - I got so much appreciation and it was really beautiful and functional
Sounds awesome Gaya! 🙌🏻
Hi Julie, I dislike feature focal walls especially if there is a fireplace, beautiful furniture,or rug. I begin decorating a room by saying this room is my canvas and my decor placement will be the show. I always glean from your instruction- thank you !!
Thank you Muriel! Feature walls should really be the focus when there is no other focus. A lot of people forget that major detail 👍🏻☺️
Very good. I was contemplating to do this or not. What you asked at the beginning made sense! Why do you want an accent wall? And the truth is I don't. Thank you very, very much. I will be looking to purchase a home near the end of this year or very early next year. I will be getting in contact with you. Keep up the great work.
Yes! When you ask yourself those key questions at the beginning of a project, the solution becomes much clearer Izishill 🙌🏻
Thanks for this very well thought list of do & don't. I learned few things about the reasons behind why some "feature" walls that don't look right.
All over wallpaper Chauncy! Nothing else provides that type of visual impact 👍🏻
I'm glad I saw this before I tackled my dining room. The wall I wanted to do has an irregular ceiling and a doorway lol. Crisis averted!
Thanks so much for these designer tips!
Lol thank you for watching Diana! 🙏🏻☺️
Wow, I never knew there were so many things to think about for where not to put accent walls. Thanks, Julie.
These are simply the things I consider Merry. You either love it and hate it 😂
We have chosen the correct wall panel to enhance our One Wall Kitchen. Laminate that is in harmony with the appliances and paint.
I do agree. I don't have any focal walls. You are my favorite designer.
Thank you for watching Taty 🙏🏻☺️
Thanks for clearing up the difference between a focal wall & an accent wall!!!
Allow this feature to become the focus Joann 🙌🏻☺️
gurl, today I painted a focal wall in our apartment it looks awesome. when everything is white. I think depends on how you do them and the style of the home. but I also agree with your point of view.
I’ve seen it done beautifully don’t get me wrong! Intention is the key 🙌🏻
Thank you so much for all the tips. I learn so much from all your videos. ❤️
Thank you for watching Lee 🙏🏻☺️
Hmmm, I really enjoyed your video and agree wholeheartedly in 98% of what you said. I love colour but, struggle with painting a whole room darker colour. I have frequently use a feature wall(agreed) to satisfy my colour fix, trying to execute it well. The more I know the more indecisive I get!😳
It helps to print out inspiration images and look at them daily Linda. That helps me lock down my decision- by the end of a week, I either love it or hate it 😆
Thank you for this video! I'm actually an architect and an artist, and am still somehow terrible at picking colors, etc for a project.
Thank you for watching Harry! Color is so personal, it’s easy to overthink it
Beautiful! Try strip lighting for an all over ambient glow. The puck lights are directional, I think the strip would look spectacular wall to wall 😍
I have recently painted a deep green accent wall in my living room. It was intentional. It is one of the focus areas but the main focus is the view.
Lovely choice of color to echo the exterior landscaping Jay 👍🏻
@@JulieKhuu Exactly! I love your channel!
I never thought to do something to the ceiling! Interesting! Especially since for me in my space it's a full square without windows or doors. In your video one was painted a pink color. Do you think a painted ceiling will make a small living look bigger? If so, what different colors would look best? Thanks!
Hello Julie
I love the tips on the accent walls.
I am repainting my house, and the suggestions was useful. Blessed 😇
Thank you for watching Dawn 🙏🏻☺️
I've been thinking of doing a feature wall in my living room but it's tough in a condo with the living/dining/kitchen all attached. If you have a video for condo layouts, please let me know! Your videos are great. Thank you for sharing your ideas.😊
She has an Awkward Spaces series, the Open Floor Plan part sounds Iike it would help you.
Thank you, I will check it out.
This is definitely when my tips will come in handy Shannon. Choose a wall that doesn’t connect to any other spaces 👍🏻
@@JulieKhuu thanks so much. I appreciate all of your tips!
Great tips! I have been thinking of adding a focal wall in my bedroom and this video couldn't have come at a better time!
If it’s a solid wall, it could be glorious Sonam!
Thank you🌷
Great tips! I’m trying to figure out if I want a feature wall. This was really helpful.
Great video! I painted my ceiling a lighter shade than the walls which made the crown molding pop.
Yes!! 🙌🏻
I have an accent wall in my living room n wanted to repaint it as I do not like the darker colour I used. Thanks for the info
Pull a color from the room’s accessories Pat 👍🏻
I'm goint to paint a wall with a structure brush and shimmering glitter, but in the same color as the other walls. I hope it turns out nice and reflects light. As for "accent walls": I painted 2 walls in the bedroom teal because on one is the head of the bed and the other will become an open warderobe. I like the warderobe to pop out. It's more a mood and not an accent at all.
Then you’ve done so with mindful intent 🙌
Hi Julie, exactly what I think. For me is a feature wall or a focal point wall. Great video !.Thanks for all the tips .
Thank you for watching Jean! 🙏🏻☺️
I believe design is a "personal opinion" whilst creating a space one feels comfortable in.
Don't be intimidated or limit yourself by one's thoughts on design. It is okay to create a space that is visually stimulating to your specific taste.
"You're" the one that has to live in you're own personal space.
Absolutely, couldn’t have said it better 💛
Last night I painted a dusty green behind floating shelves and was worried about accent wall issues, only to see in this video it really is an accent in a coffee niche, not a focal point of the kitchen. Whew 😅
Nice!! That’s precisely how those niches will bring some dimension to the kitchen L 🙌🏻
I want a black accent wall in my living room because I love the colour black, but don’t want to paint all four walls black and I like the idea of the tv blending into the wall when it’s switched off
The perfect solution designed with intent 🖤
I agree with you. A lot of accent walls will go out of style and you never know where you might have to sell. Future buyers might not like your choice of an accent wall.
Buyers will factor in what it costs to remove/ replace it for sure Kathleen 👍🏻
Hey Julie, I’d appreciate your comments on decorating a very small powder room (unfortunately with a window). I just can’t seem to get the right design or plan for modern /glam style. It really shouldn’t be this hard but geez!!!!

Hello!, please give us tips on Mancaves and gentleman's libraries. Do/ Don'ts, too many antiques? When enough is enough?
It’s enough when you say it is Eddie 😉 Would love to do a man cave edition! Awesome idea 🙌🏻
You designed these walls very intentionally Gina! That was my point exactly 🙌🏻🖤
Love!
How exciting Maria!! Let the decisions begin! 🎊
I’m with you MamaJP 🙌🏻 I still love bold color and maximalist patterns, but saved for really special pieces and not all over the place
What if you have a corner sectional couch. Can you paint the two walls touching the couch? Or just the one wall with no windows.
That is so true. They are really focal points not accent points.
Especially when it’s the first thing everyone notices!
As always, I enjoy your advice. I agree with the terminology!
Thank you for watching Rebecca 🙏🏻☺️
Any tips for an outdoor lounge area that is relatively small , 8’ x 15’? Your videos a helpful and the topics come up at the right time for my remodel project
Hi Virginia, I have a ton of outdoor space videos. Search for that playlist 👍🏻
Thank you! Enjoyed this. Been considering a feature wall!
Thank you for watching Melissa! 🙏🏻☺️
Boldness has genius in it Ida! Your space sounds personalized and fabulous! I’m a sucker for a bit of gold leaf ✨
One of my fav wallpaper lines- they do no wrong 😍
Thank you so much for the tips! Always looking forward to your videos!

Hi Julie! Do you think wheat 🌾 in a vase is okay if we live in a farming area with that being our views? I forgot to ask you on an earlier video on that!

@@JulieKhuu does it go against fen Shui though to have something dead in the house? That was my biggest thought against it!

Oh dear my bedroom is white with a wallpapered wall and now I'm about to paint one wall a different colour in my kitchen 🙆♂
I love off white especially against pure white casing. It will bring out the warmth of the wood Leticia 👍🏻
Perfect time I'm decorating n wasn't to sure great video
Thank you for watching Ell! 🙏🏻☺️
Ha ha!! My landlord's "accent wall" is floor to ceiling mirrors.😒 It is definitely the defining feature in my teensy condo.
Haha so 80’s!! 😂
Some great advice, thank you!!
I violated the window wall piece. I wanted to highlight the wall behind my bed and it had two windows. Oh well. I love it and that’s all that matters.
Yup 🙌🏻 ALL that matters Selina ☺️
I’m wondering if I can paint one end of my living room - where there is a monstrous ugly 22ft red brick fireplace - as a “feature wall”? The house is open concept, so the rest of the living room has to be lighter in color, but would it be too much to paint that one wall darker, to sort of frame the fireplace?
That sounds very intentional, you’ve got my vote 👍
PS. I’m feeling kind of bad that I called the fireplace “monstrously ugly.” I think I hurt its feelings😢
I think it's more of a personal taste. I agree with some things and disagree with other things you said.
We might live in the same house! 22ft red brick monstrous fireplace
You are doing great my dear
Thank you for watching Kirandeep 🙏🏻☺️
Thank for a great video. I like seing accent walls but i dont do them as i feel them too permanent. Il someone who like to switch and get bored fast so i prefer something a bit more versatile. I have a mini home gym and really dont know how to incorporate my équipement in my design (barbell, set of kettlebel, weight best etc ). I used to had them behind the door in my room but felt it was too much active energy. I have an open space appartement and would like to create a gym nook/corner. And ideas please?
Keep the equipment in the living room and far away from the bedroom Nadege. Active Yang energies can better align that way
@@JulieKhuu thank you
I’d love a video about rooms with too many doors!
You just saved me ! LOVE all your tips and fabulous inspirations, especially the "5th wall" ! 🙂
Thank you for watching Janice! Addressing that 5th wall will make your design feel very intentional 👍🏻☺️
Okay with everything but the ceiling??? I like mine white!!!!
How do you feel about a white kitchen but with a dark color? Say black cabinets below?
Sounds fabulous especially if your kitchen receives a lot of natural light Jaclyn 👍🏻☺️
So informative but I have a question I paint the end of a hallway wall. In black to put a picture wall
If that’s your intent, sure why not? 👍🏻
I’m look for wood accents to make my kitchen more organic
In my dining room my plain white accent wall I put up an old school map quite big.
Sounds fabulous and a great conversation starter Bubbles! 🙌🏻
@@JulieKhuu Great! Thanks for the reply :)
Completely agree about ceilings.
Thank you for watching Maximilian! 🙏🏻☺️
My son has just gone off to Uni so I want to decorate his room while he is gone. I want to put a feature wall behind his bed but don’t know whether to stop at the first crease or second crease which is at a 45 degree angle (so it would look like a canopy over the bed). What are your thoughts?
Feature walls should cover the entire length of the walls
Nice tips!! But I respectfully disagree with almost all of your suggested "dont's" lol.
Thank you for watching and sharing feedback 🙏☺️
INTERESTING but I liked a couple she put X on. It all boils down to what the person likes in their space.
Absolutely Mary, the more I show, the more you’ll know either way 🤗
Julie, can I do an accent wall on the entrance foyer? I have a mirror right now, be well
If you love it and can imagine it, go for it Myra 👍🏻
Hi Julie
I do have an accent wall in the master bedroom. Margaret
That wallpaper sounds fabulous Margaret! Very regal ✨ I’ll work on dining rooms next since I’m in the planning stages of redesigning mine ☺️
In Australia we usually say feature wall.
It’s the syntax for me 😂
2:01 - 2:20 and 3:05 aren't these examples contradicting or I'm just missing a point? please enlighten me, thanks. by the way great video🙂
The point is made per section per tip Roi. 2.01 for a continuous wall, 2.20 for pulling paint colors per palette etc…
