This is probably the most important video for starting vloggers! My 2c about this topic. 1. Treating the camera as a person is something I came up by myself after awhile, but I wish someone would have told that tip at the start :D It was a game changer! 2.The fidgeting while filming can be your best friend or your worst enemy, because it may also seem like an anxiety driven activity. Doing it in moderately, can help you relax. 3.Challenging yourself by vlogging publicly, is one thing that really gives you confidence to do while you are at the comfort of your own studio. The rush you got from it is similar, what you experienced the first time while you were filming in your own studio. When you realize it internally, you understand how much you have grown as a content creator. Bonus: I'd like to add one tip which I learned while recording music: Unlike in live situations, you can always take a re-take after re-take until you are satisfied. No-one will know how much you stutter (or made mistakes) and they will only see the things you want them to see. Funnily enough after this realization, my bloopers/mistakes dropped significantly :D After awhile I even started to embrace them with humor rather than shame. Instead of avoiding them I occasionally gathered them in "blooper reel" for my viewers to see. Final words for those who are still struggling: Relax and be you, because no-one else can do that for you.
Great tips! I've always found that creating an outline and then scripting my videos (paired with a teleprompter) really helps me get my point across to the camera with confidence.
So Relevant - I filmed a video two days ago and I did my intro bit for the first time in front of a family who was camping where I was putting my canoe in the water. I'm so used to speaking to the camera when I'm completely alone in the wild but it was a fun experience trying it out in front of this family. they were super chill with the whole thing and cheered me on as I stumbled over 3 or 4 takes :p I went with a take I did much later when I was solo in my canoe but it was still good practice in front of them and I'm happy I gave it a whirl
I just started my channel and I was really down a few days about how uncomfortable I was on camera, but then one of your old video popped up and I didn’t realize how much different you were back then than you are now! You were still very good but your confidence is so much better now! That really inspired me and so do all your videos now! You’re great!
Love these tips. I'm still at the beginning but what I realized to what helps: After recording an entire video Putting everything jnto the timeline just to realize it's all out of focus and I have to start everything over. The second round is way more natural. Which taught me. To rehearse the entire video once can help 👍🏻
Needed this! Definitely one of my biggest struggles whenever I film for my channel is being good at talking properly and making it natural. Especially since I’m a pretty soft spoken person to begin with
Spot on Matti 👏👏 When I first started making video (5 years ago) I scripted every word (because I was not used to talk to a camera and my videos were on health topics) and that was a huge mistake as I used to sound unnatural and scripted. Now I try to talk to camera the same way I talk to people.
I’ve been a huge fan of this channel since travel feels. I have seen how you evolved in being confident in front of the camera. From the awkward and stiff looking (but informative) tutorials during Travel Feels to a very confident Matti , vlogging and just speaking and giving valuable insights in a fun and relaxed way. You’re very inspiring! Goes to show that being in front of a camera is not something you are born with. It comes when you practice and do it regularly.
Matti: Rule number one: "Think that camera is a person and have a conversation" Me: No! I am going to think my camera is a volleyball named Wilson! We will make a fire!
I started recording daily vlogs for myself to keep track of work related topics. I used to write that stuff down, but I figured if I talk about something I am 100% comfortable with. It would help me get used to talking to the camera and serve as a “notebook”. I then asked my wife to just hang out when I record these vlogs. Now I don’t mind when people are around when I talk to a camera.
These tips are seriously GOLD!! Thanks Matti! It definitely comes with repetitions.. I'm a group fitness trainer who coaches 30-35 people in a single session, and the funny part is I use to freak out and get super flustered giving a simple class presentation in front of a group of 10 people. My first sessions weren't pretty, but now a year later I ROCK THEM!! I'm hoping to take that same mentality, and your advise, and up my youtube game now too💪🏼
As an Actor I've been in front of a camera many times and on stage solo in front of an audience and none of that is harder than being one on one with a camera doing a UA-cam video. I've been doing it for over a year now and while it's getting easier it's still not easy. Bullet points seem to work best for me. I've tried full scripting and a teleprompter and both made me sound robotic. Like you said, Practice!
You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for a vlogger at your level to confirm that the lighting is adjusted as much as it is. I can finally rest now 🙏🏽
Had to talk as part of a video that was being recorded for my employer recently. What a nightmare. All tech detail that I wanted to convey and even my job title went awol from my mind when the camera started rolling. A few double takes later and it was just about acceptably "Not horrendous". Matti. You have my respect for being so cool in front of camera. You get a like and a subscribe from me.
This is definitely a major point I'm working on myself. Just starting out and quickly realized it's going to take a lot of practice. These tips are definitely very helpful, thank you!
SUCH a great video on so many levels! Talking naturally to a piece of plastic, glass and metal is SO difficult and your tips REALLY helps! I also loved the sound mixing of this video, so much attention to detail. Did a lot to the flow and tempo of the video. Masterful Haapoja brothers! And THEN throughout your talking scenes in the studio I kept thinking "How does he get that great lighting in so many angles of that studio, mine kind-of just looks dark if I turn my head from the main light." Then it turned out you were moving the lights around for each scene. Haha. It looked so natural haha, you completely had me that you were just casually strolling around. UA-cam Master doing his magic. Just love it.
My biggest tip for becoming a better speaker in front of the camera is to practise speaking in front of a mirror. It doesn't even matter what you say, just keep practising talking to yourself in front of a mirror and you'll slowly build the confidence you need to become better over time. That's how I got better, at least! 💪🏻
Thanks for the advice! I´m just starting out and english is not my native language. Makes it a bit harder to feel natural on camera but hoping it improves as I go. Definitely going to try seeing the camera as a person and maybe tinker with something during the talking bits
this is so helpful Matti. I've always been super conscious when talking to the camera. I have just realized just now, im like, yeah that's what I need, I need some distractions while talking to the camera. I'm surely gonna try these tricks out. thanks a ton 😁
So true! I always feel like everyone is looking at me when I'm filming outside. When I think about there perspective it is not unreasonable that they're all looking. To them I'm just a weird guy talking in an other language to a small camera.
One tip that I’ve learned, I try to make a short list before I film just to know what I have to say while I’m filming. Before I make a list sometimes I ran out of what to say. 😂
Love hearing this from you two Finns! We are not known for our ability for small talk 😃 and being in the camera does require some improvise no matter how much you plan I think. One day maybe I'll be there.
Great tips Matti! Very practical and helpful! The practice thing is probably the best thing in my opinion. It’s kinda like prayer… if you don’t ever do it, then it will always feel awkward the random times that you try.
I low key love seeing you guys in-line skating. Back in the day (a Tuesday maybe?) I had a pair of Edwards Chocolates and Edwards Troopers. Wasn’t really good enough to deserve them but I had them. 😂
another tip - BODY LANGUAGE helps as well - I found that moving your hands and gesturing while speaking has a physical way of dis-lodging words and ideas stuck in your throat
I feel like this is the universe talking to me LOL! I just posted my first video on UA-cam talking to the camera.. I felt awkward but figured practice makes perfect, learn by your mistakes or whatever it maybe! The very next day! This video starts playing on auto-play via my Headset. Thankyou, I needed this! Have a great day!
Thank you Matti on the tips! I just recently went from behind the camera to start doing talking heads, just 2 videos in. Definitely not easy to talk to the camera, did so many takes, like over 20 times for some lines. I'm definitely improving as I go! Even the way I prep the script from using word doc to slides of outlines. Also learning what to do with my body gestures.
some really good tips and ideas here, thank you Matti. i definitely need to Practise Practise Practise! hopefully we all get more relaxed with it the more we practise and take time to try.
I just seriously don't understand how does Matti always know what's going in my mind?!? Like I was literally thinking about this for the past couple of days! I guess Matti and I have a good telepathic bond 😉😂 Anyways Thank You Matti!
Time and practice will do it. The more videos you make in this practice you will realize how big of an improvement you will make looking back at your first few videos compared to the most recent.
Excellent tips and you share based on your experience. I also think that personality plays a role of how some people are just born with it or people need more practice.
Just started watching your channel and I love it so much!!! Thanks for all the great content. I'm in a different niche (Pilates) but I've had so much fear to overcome with presenting. I started lining up my toddler's cute stuffed toys next to the camera and pretending they were my class. It's ridiculous but it helps!!
This is the first video I watched of you and I thought you and your friend were the same person, and I was really impressed by the cool creative editing you were doing to make it seem like you were talking to yourself. Example: 1:07 to 1:08, I thought that was all a clever editing trick and I was just super impressed at how creative it was. Funny to realize it was 2 people after all.
I used to do this weird acting series when I first started youtube in 2017, it helped a lot with my confidence as I would do it outside, inside. Depending on ideas. I must have looked like an idiot but it helped
What are you doing to make it more natural? Cause its weird right????
9 Secs ago. Early gang
More Cocaine
Stare directly down the lens, find the sole of the camera....
#EarlyGang lol but man 100% I NEVER feel not weird haha… I am always thinking I am weird talking to myself!
It DOES feel weird, BUT once I push record button and actually start talking to my camera, everything around me just disappears.
