I did Invisalign. Here's my advice: do it at an orthodontist and not a dentist like I did. An orthodontist can diagnose bite problems and address them appropriately. A dentist cannot. I have a bite problem that wasn't addressed when I did Invosalign with my dentist. Secondly, DO NOT buy the invisalign retainers. They are so effing expensive and not necessary. Just have your local orthodontist make you custom retainers. They are so much cheaper and work just as well. Not only will you save money but if you need to have a filling you can just get new cheap retainers instead of paying a fortune all over again for the invisalign retainers.

Good tips about the retainers! And yeah I felt similar about the ortho vs dentist. Hindsight right? I'm still happy with having straight teeth as they are just SO much easier to keep clean.

@daytoncjans hey I'm still happy that I did it and glad with the results! Remember there are good dentists and bad orthos too. If you find the experiences totally fine that's awesome. Invisalign does most of the bulk of the work anyway so I'm sure you'll have a beautiful smile at the end!!

I'm on month 3 of my Invisalign journey (tray 7/20) and soooo ready for it to be over 😂 mostly because the process is a bit time-consuming for me. I wear each tray for 2 weeks, and I only get 3 sets of trays at a time from my dentist, which means i have a dentist appointment every 6 weeks, on top of regular cleanings 😒 with a very busy work schedule...not a fan of having to take time off every 6 weeks for a check-in. Invisalign diet is definitely workin for me though 🤣 I was a big snacker throughout my day, now I dont snack at all. I would normally eat breakfast at work, but now, due to my cleaning regimen, breakfast most days is a quick smoothie. I will say that my dentist office has been VERY invested in my treatment. they switched my cleaning frequency to every 3 months while on Invisalign, so they can buff out any visible staining from teeth shifting, and make sure plaque doesn't build up and cause my trays not to fit as accurately. loving the results so far, and its been a pretty smooth pain-free process (the first 48 hours were the worst 😵‍💫) i brush and floss 3x a day now, and literally only take my trays out to eat, do my cleaning regimen, and pop em back in.

    • @TheSAHDLife

Yeah man that sounds like a hassle having to do all the appointments etc... but at least it's only temporary. Look at it as forced meditation when you're sitting in that chair waiting on the, lol. That's exciting though... having straight teeth is a privilege I am very grateful for. I wish everyone could have access to it... the ability to easily clean and take care of my teeth is legit my favourite part.

Ortho here! Thank you for your video. All the issues you had could've been avoided and you could've gotten a more comfortable experience with an orthodontist. As for time, most of my patients finish before the estimated period. A specialist usually can estimate it quite closely. I personally spend a lot of time teaching patients about aligners and common issues with them at the very beginning. Rarely do any of my patients have the issues you mentioned. Also getting Invisalign for esthetics only without taking into account the bite is wasteful. Get it done properly since the cost is similar. Not correcting your bite can led to more damage down the road as well as instability. Don't be afraid to ask tough questions to your orthodontist/dentist and have them show you similar cases to yours. If they don't have any it's not a good sign. Your results look great however. Congratulations on your smile!

That's frustrating. I wonder how much of it is invisalign's fault as opposed to the dentist since they're the ones that create the plan. But I bet that's where an orthodontist would see what's going on and have the experience to fix it or challenge Invisalign along the way. Do keep us posted with how it goes. Hopefully you find some good TMJ exercises in the meantime to help relieve the issue.

I have Invisalign thru my dentist. He is very thorough so I have been lucky in that sense. A few things to mention:
If you wear the trays for at least 22 hrs a day and only take them out to eat, the treatment progresses faster.
To clean them, put them in a cup of warm water with a Polident Retainers tab at night while you get ready for bed. Usually clean in 15 mins.
At the end of treatment (this includes refinement) you are given 4 sets of retainers because they do eventually wear down. Each retainer (supposing you don’t grind really bad), should last a very long time.
If you start off with a closed bite and fairly crooked teeth, when tx is done and your bite is now open - it will feel weird for a bit.

For sensitive teeth from whitening, you need to:
Use an nHAP and fluoride based toothpaste for a couple weeks beforehand. This will help block the porous tubules that get irritated.
After you whiten, use a toothpaste like Sensodyne which has a pain killer in it. This will flow through the remaining tubules and help with the pain.
In both cases, DON'T RINSE YOUR MOUTH AFTER BRUSHING. Toothpaste needs to sit on the teeth. And do not drink for 30 minutes.

My dentist is really legit and has high standards, he referred me to a really good orthodontist. They take 360 3D imaging and X-rays and really take their time planning out the treatment. Took about a month from consult to start my first tray. They are so detailed it’s mind blowing. I mentioned I had nasal issues on my left nostril and the doc was like “well let’s see if we can find the issue” and he was able to go layer by layer from the scan and identify where my nasal cavity was constricted and then recommended I take that to a doctor to have it looked at. Sir I don’t think you were a good candidate for Invisalign. You complained about everything. To keep them clean , just soak them in denture cleaner while you have your dinner at night then brush your teeth and pop them back in. I lost 9.5 kg wearing mine because I didn’t pull them out to eat all the time. You really don’t need to be eating constantly. When you have finished your treatment you need to buy a retainer for night time not use the one you last had to move your teeth. The retainer is much sturdier and lasts a long time. If you don’t like the shape of your teeth your dentist can shape them a bit with a file when they take your attachments off if you have them. They can also do composite bonding.

It is very interesting to hear that in your country dentists can prescribe Invisalign - in Europe, and I am speaking for Croatia, any treatment that alters the position and/or bite has to be done by orthodontists and they take their time to explain the process and make sure that you set realistic expectations. All in all, you make some great points in your video. I am currently on tray 5 out of the initial 50. I was immediately told that I would have to wear retainers for several months basically 24/7 and then it is advised to wear them for the rest of your life during the night. I was also told that each situation is different and many variables have to be taken into account, which could lead to either shortening or extending the tray wear and also the need for refinements.

    • @TheSAHDLife
      @TheSAHDLife  10 місяців тому +3

I too find that very interesting. I'm not sure if we have lower standards or maybe since Invisalign does most of the work on their end, the Dentists just have to follow the instructions which might not be that difficult? I like your system though and think it's worth the extra $500-1000 (which is what it seems like the difference in cost is between Dentist/Ortho) from my experience.
Either way though I am still happy with the results and glad I did it. Good luck on your journey and thanks for watching!!

@@TheSAHDLife Orthodontists are trained to move teeth. All Orthodontists are dentists, but not all dentists are orthodontists. Hardly ANY orthodontics is taught in dental school, which is why most general dentists do not know how to move teeth properly. It’s also untrue that Orthodontists are less concerned about aesthetics. A good experienced Orthodontist would be able to combine both functional and aesthetic goals. Lastly, although Invisalign does send back an initial plan, an Orthodontist would likely modify that plan to perfection. And that takes time. A dentist however, would more likely accept the plan that returns from Invisalign with minimal or any modifications.

Thank you for your video. It seems like the experience is so different in America and Europe. I definitely feel like I was able to make a more informed decision at the beginning of the treatment, also we can only get braces through orthodontist and not your regular dentist. You can buy ortho retainer cleaner tablets. Just put a tablet into a jar with your traces. That saves a lot of time for daily cleaning. Also idk if they make you do dental hygiene appointments during the treatment, they were semi-mandatory, too. That definitely helps with the stains as they use airflow and also apply something to make the teeth smoother, fluoride etc. So not so many people actually whiten their teeth with peroxide gels. For teeth whitening, they usually offer different %, I think for Opalescence it's 10, 16, and 35 %. So maybe asking for lower concentration would work? However, for our standards, their look great and naturally good looking even without whitening.

I just unfortunately worked with someone who really didn't explain a lot of the things I wish he would have and I unfortunately had to figure out a lot of things myself with a lot of worrying... Cutting my own first set of trays gave me a lot of anxiety! I've spoken with a lot of people that went through the treatment as well and they didn't have a lot of issues that I had... That’s the same experience I had at a dentist. The dentist told me that it would take 6 months and I’d need a frenectomy. I asked them to submit a predetermination and she had no sense of urgency even though the dentist said I can start next week. Also, the cost upfront would be crazy even when I have insurance. I didn’t enjoy the experience because I went in for a regular cleaning and paid for a deep cleaning. I’m glad I got the deep cleaning done but with them only focused on money they failed to tell me I had to come back in for a scaling and polish. They called me the day before and I just stopped going to that dentist. Thankfully I did some research and looked into an orthodontist consultation. I told the orthodontist the dentist said I needed a filling and when she checked she said I didn’t. They explained everything to me thoroughly. They gave me a description of my treatment plan, which will be 18-24 months. The price per month was better too. I had a better experience and start my treatment in a week. The only thing I thought after that was… imagine if I didn’t go to that consultation and paid to have Invisalign for 6 months to not have anything corrected. 🙄

I'm still happy enough with the results but in hindsight I would have done things differently.

You go right ahead and absolutely knock all the dentists out there! They victim-blame those with TMJD for being stressed and clenching teeth, whether they are or aren't, when in my research the (common) cause of TMJD is an improper bite caused by poor dentistry. (It's an art, not a science, guys). A piece of paper between your teeth, to tap, tap, tap and where you're expected to say whether it feels balanced after your teeth have been drilled and filled. And when your mouth is still frozen. Really??
I find the current trend for economically-challenged dentists is the shift from preventative care to waiting it out until the perfect storm....route canals and crowns needed and a push on dental implants too, it's all the rage now.
Good money in it. Beats the hell out of filling tiny cavities before those become a huge expense for the client (still called a patient). That sh*t won't pay for the 2nd Porsche for the wife....!
Yep, I'm pissed off. Years of neglect, lying every 6 months that "everything is fine" - until it isn't. TMJD that can't be treated or reversed now - only deterioration, more locked jaw events and severe pain to look forward to in my "golden years" as it was left amongst the "everything is fine" when the many dentists I saw over decades said nothing. Waiting for the big take home pay.
Oh and the push for braces, the high end Invisalign for $6500 to wear the rest of my life when braces are contraindicated for those who suffer from TMJD. Unethical. Immoral. Greedy. There oughtta be a law.

I got extremely lucky because my aunt is a dentist and paid $0. I think it depends on the severity of the persons teeth bc I only have 8 trays. It helps that I had braces from 12-16 years old. Did your dentist tell you if your teeth were really bad? Maybe your wife teeth were worser so she had a longer treatment. I think most of the things you've mentioned in the video were told by my dentist when i was deciding to get invislign. I did however notice some of my trays i switch along was sometime hard to get it fit, but i wonder if its just cause i might of not watch the how long my invilisgn was out when i needed to eat.
I also had teeth sensitivity when i switch to a new trays so I'll just eat soft food for the first few days.
Maybe it was just your dentist who didn't give you that much information that they should have told you? My dentist told me i had overbites and my teeth wasnt bad. I was told about how long the treatment was, etc, especially about wearing retainer at night after im done with my treatment. So probably just your dentist you had was just not good since they didn't give you all that information. Should consider switching to a new dentist then. I had a good experience with my treatment. I'm just saying.
Btw, did your dentist not give you an option to get an extra retainer? Im aware of the retainer getting worn out so i got me 4 extra which was also mention from my dentist if i want to. I dont gotta worry about it for a while, lmao.
Also, i think braces or invislign youll have to wear retainer for the rest of your life either way cause our teeth will shift back if we dont wear them. I feel like invilisgn is better to manage, but only for people whos able to be more responsible compared to braces since you only gotta be careful on eating certain things so it doesnt break your braces.

I went to an ortho for my treatment. I went to three ortho consults before I picked one and none of them told me about the retainers. When I thought I was going for my final check-up they told me they were going to put in the metal retainers now and I had no idea what they were talking about. Now I'm stuck with train tracks behind my teeth for the rest of my life and I just can't get used to them. The alternative is wearing the plastic reatiners every night for the rest of my life. None of this was explained during my consults. He told me I'd have to wear them every night at first, then gradually go down to just a couple of nights a week. Turns out he meant on top of the metal retainers that he said nothing about. To add to that my face changed quite drastically and not for the better. All this for one crooked tooth, so for me it is definitely a giant regret. A lot of people don't get told about the retainers and I hadn't come across anything on the wires behind the teeth when I was looking up information beforehand. I don't know if they purposefully don't tell you so you won't decide not to do it or if it's just such a normal part of the process to them that they don't even realize some people really don't know and they have to explicitly tell them. Either way it's a huge piece of information to leave out.

I did loose two kilo’s and I am already a thin person so I wasn’t happy with that. I switch every week and stopped eating apples, or hard crusted bread, it hurts to much. Very happy with the results, hope I don’t get refinements but have to wait and see over three weeks about that…. They also shaved my teeth.

I think the biggest difference is that at the time tech wasn’t very good and if all your teeth hadn’t grown and settled, they would do a curvature on your teeth base on your mouth size at that time. As I grew and my mouth got bigger and the last molars came out, they were completely off from the second last tooth which led to other problems. Just came from a dentist here who recemented a years old crown from the U.S. for the 3rd time in 2 weeks, and he said that unless I fix the cross bite, I’m going to keep having such problems. Right now, I have 2 other chipped & a chipped veneer (all work originally done in the US.), and he explained that the material & workmanship was great, it’s just that the force caused from my crossbite is going to destroy any attempts he makes you fix these things aesthetically & it all makes sense now!!! The accusations of grinding my teeth at night (which I don’t), unnecessary night guards & the repeated, expensive repairs to crowns when they crack or come out while eating. I’m leaning towards going with this dentist because he’s the only person in the double digits of dentists (I moved a lot in the U.S.), who ever suggested getting to the root of the problem - in his words. And he advises a low & slow approach of 2 years, because cosmetically, my smile looks perfect, it’s my bite that’s the problem (and if I open my big mouth & you see the metal under the cracked porcelain of my crowns which doesn’t bother either of us, lol). And he’s in the “Beverly Hills” section of the city, but it’s still a fraction of the cost of U.S. without insurance & the practice has thousands of great reviews. But with the way my ADHD is set up, I know I’ve got about a hundred hours of hyper focused research to do before I make a decision, so thanks for being my 1st stop! ❤❤❤

@@TheSAHDLife I would say so. I have the counter one. Only downside is it is loud. I may end up looking for a quieter version because my wife gets up super early. Philips makes a portable one that's supposed to be quiet.

Oh good for you, that's awesome! It's a bit of a pain for a little while but you get used to it pretty quick. It took me a few days to be able to pop out there trays but that becomes second nature in no time.

I completely agree with you, as now I have already got the aligners a month ago from a dentist….. I truly wish, I would have watched your video earlier 😢

Me too lol. But hey, I think you'll still be happy with the results at the end of the day. Invisalign does the bulk of the work here... the dentist just does a little bit. Trust the system. Invisalign has literally done this millions of times. Your results will be good.

As a 37 year old who is 6 months into braces, i wish i wouldve done this sooner. I've actually gotten more compliments and my braces than ive had people laugh at them. For some reason i had this weird high school type scenario in my mind that people would make fun of me or id spit everywhere. None of that was true. Im so glad i'll just have to do braces for 2 years then a retainer for 1 maybe 2 after and then be DONE!

Oh that's awesome, and I know what you mean! You will also probably be wearing a retainer at night though for the rest of your life yeah... similar to Invisalign? Some people do cement in a retainer instead but I know I didn't want to do that.
      Better late than never though!

To be honest, having had braces, I don't see why people find them difficult. Brush your teeth. Buy a floss threader. I think invisalign is harder bc you can eat with braces, you just can't eat certain things (and most were things I didn't care about anyway). I'd have definitely gotten braces again. And know ppl who bc of compliance and lifestyle, should have gotten braces over Invisalign. Even pre braces, I had fairly straight teeth, so I have been surprised seeing invisalign used on what are clearly very complex cases under a dentist's care.

I think braces when you are young are the best. But since a lot of people didn't get to experience that, doing them or Invisalign when you are older is the next best thing. I wanted to make a UA-cam channel so Invisalign were less distracting for my audience. I think braces would have been a little intense for a new creator!

Mine said 12-14 months and I’m on day 2. I have 32 trays changing every week until my next appointment in 4 months where I will get more trays! Hopefully it will be quicker than 12 months

Well that's exciting! Good for you. I know the first few days can be a little tricky, learning how to pop the trays out etc.. but it goes by fast. remember how long you wanted to straighten your teeth? Well now you're in the middle of it! It'll be over before you know it and you'll be smiling all the time! 👊

I had braces treatment done buring my childhood days but after i got thm off.. I dint wear my retainers and now after 15 yrs my teeth hv moved back to its orginal place.. N i got gaps in btw my teeth n plus i hv an overbite.. Thinking of going for Invisalign treatment nw.. Thnk u for sharing ur experience.. But cn my overbite be corrected during this treatment??

    • @TheSAHDLife
      @TheSAHDLife  6 місяців тому +1

I think minor corrections can definitely be made using elastics and Invisalign. The orthodontist did that for my wife. I also have a bit of a crossbite and going through a dentist he didn't even mention that... So if it is something you are concerned about I definitely recommend going to an orthodontist and seeing what they have to say. Maybe even get a couple consultations since they are free anyway.

Did you have a lot of attachments break? I just had my invisalign put in today, and within 5 minutes of walking out the door I wanted to drink my coffee. So I was removing them just as instructed, from the back/outer edges on the palette side of the teeth and one side at a time... And one attachment came right off just from me taking them out. I went right back in and they reattached another, then said one popping off is no big deal... But if I believe 3 or 4 come off then it's considered an emergency? Well, I successsfully removed and reattached at lunch time. Then at home, taking them off for dinner, another popped off. I ate dinner without issues, but then when brushing and flossing yet another popped off... I have an ultra soft bristle toothbrush. So currently I'm not even 12 hours past getting them attached and I'm 2 attachments down, 3 total came off in less than half a day... Wtf.....

To be honest, neither my wife nor I had any attachments break. But my wife said she heard it was quite common as she spent a lot of time in the r/invisalign subreddit. That would be a bit disconcerting for sure... I had my own stresses with the trays hanging off my back teeth from DAY 1! Ugh... I was freaking out and the Dentist I used at the time didn't seem to care... why would he, it wasn't his life!

I'm unsatisfied with my braces. I've been wearing them for 3 years now and although they slightly straighten my teeth, the realignment stopped about a year ago and I feel like my teeth are reverting. I feel like I'm giving away money for free, I just want to take them out and switch to Invisalign.

That's an interesting take. I wonder how much of it is your orthodontist. The only reason I say that is because I've heard the exact opposite multiple times but you're the first to say you want to go from braces to Invisalign. In my experience Invisalign only got me to about 97% or as people say that braces can get you the full 100% but it requires a lot of tweaking by the ortho. Hopefully you can have a good conversation with them and be satisfied in the end. Honestly I don't think you would be any happier with Invisalign

I went through an orthodontist and they definitely didn't tell me that I needed to wear retainers forever during the consultation :( I wouldn't have done the treatment if I knew.

I guess there really needs to be a better orientation, and maybe this is something Invisalign needs to offer itself rather than rely on the dentists to cover all the FAQs. Maybe they do but they don't advertise it well.
