Thank you for this show. I join IT in 1995 when Bodyshopping was introduced, means we will be shopped to organisations of other countries and our organisation will earn something on the resources' billing. This culture changed after 1997 when Y2K requirement came, especially the threat to mainframes which were anticipated to fail when 2 digit year field became 00 as 4 digit year field was reduced to 2 digit due to high cost memory of Mainframe. When this issue was detected, many openings came from US based organisations of almost all sectors and resources were taken left and right without mainframe knowledge. Funny recruitment happened if a resource know the word COBOL, as no one except 60s and 70s kids knew COBOL. With this magic word, many training centers came during 1995 and 1996 to teach this language even though there were no mainframe links available. They used some simulators to teach COBOL. For mainframes, core skills are combinely called Vanilla, which includes COBOL, JCL, VSAM, DB2 and CICS and to some extend Assembler. During that time, if a resource is level 3 in all these skills, they are the ones who were needed at that time. There were also Y2K clocks to mark the end of 1999 when I was working in similar Y2K projects for US based healthcare, publishing and manufacturing clients. At that time, all these service organisations had a hope that they will get mainframe maintenance works also once Y2K issue got resolved, but this didn't happen, Once this issue was fixed, all these verticals started reducing IT spending, which leads to first recession especially for those who spent their time in fixing Y2K issues and they were forced to learn Java, asp, jsp, unix etc. etc. This was the first recession.
After 9/11 attack at US, many organisations located in twin tower lost their infra structure and with the help of US Government funding, they started re building the same, which leads to a slow upward trend and again requirements came for Legacy systems enhancements and maintenance, which again leads to learning of Mainframe Vanilla skills starting 2002 and many java resources were forced to return back to Legacy systems and this continued till 2005.
Starting 2006, almost all the infra structures were ready and again there is a cut in IT spendings which leads to another recession in 2007, but this was very short and recovered fast.
In 2009, there were some targets to sunset mainframes completely and to replace them with cloud based platforms and larger clusters of unix machines named Hadoop. By this time, 60s and 70s kids are already in their 50s and as mentioned, we were found useless as we are not able to leave our core legacy skills and this recession was severe. I too was faced axe, but some how managed to get billing and hence survived.
After this, no major recessions were seen even though some job cuts happened here and there. in 2020, entire globe went in a tough situation in the name of CORONA Virus, which caused a total change in economy where we were forced to use digital payments and online transactions. Term online came in almost all activities right from education and everywhere and healthcare was looking for major enhancements in their system to accommodate processing for paying corona treatment claims. Due to this a big boom came in IT sector even though other sectors are facing closure. This leads to major recruitment in IT sector and this happened till 1st quarter of 2022.
Now another recession is predicted, but this time, for sure 60s and 70s kids will go away from the IT sector for sure as there are lot of youngster coming out of colleges and it is right time for those 60s and 70s kids to voluntarily move out if they are in 55 to 57.
I took my first loan after completing 5 years in my IT service and took last jump in August 2000 and after that, for the past 22 years working in same organiation. I am a mainframe professional with 25 years of experience in handling enhancements, production support and maintenance projects. I took my first home loan in 1999 which I have completed in 2004. With this, I purchased a flat in Bangalore, which is giving me some income. In 2007, I relocated to Madras and in 2009, I took another loan for purchasing a flat in Madras, which I have closed this month, as I will be retiring next year.
I never spend for parties or never go for shopping malls or restaurants during week ends either I was in Bangalore or now in Chennai. I started my retirement planning from 2015 by having some coconut plantation in my native village. I never withdraw my PF till 2014 and started my first withdrawal for higher education of my son who finished his BE and now employed in an MNC and started earning. I withdrew only the interest part for his education. Now I have enough funds in my PF which will help me in earning some pension. My credit card bill never cross 30000 which I will pay in full even though I have 2.5 lakhs limit. I never travel in 2nd AC or 1st AC in trains, instead put petrol in my car and use the same for our family tours. I never board private buses by paying fancy 1000 or 2000 rupees for AC sleepers, instead use the same for car for the entire family.
Risk will be there in all the jobs, we need to think how to mitigate. If we plan properly, we can survive. Last but not the least, plan your self for your future and do some savings. Avoid week end spending and never go for credit cards, instead try to use debit cards. Instead of buying in week ends, if we save, it will held during the risk timings..
Sorry for the lengthy story.. Thanks

As an IT recruitment professional, laying off or firing performing employees is not happening, and moreover, compared to the third quarter of this year, the fourth quarter appears stable, and by next year, even this will be stabilised. Even now, there are humongous opportunities available for Backend, fullstack, machine learning, data engineering...etc were still booming and hiring is happening with an average of 50 percent hikes from their current ctc, which is literally higher compared to the last two years. So IT professionals who are all staying up to date and striving to advance with a steady learning curve will always have opportunities everywhere. The Indian job market appears
stable, and as inflation affects the
US and Europe far more than
recession, other nations' inflation is not harming India's job market in any way, as predicted.

The ones who were laid off from Meta,Twitter,Amazon will easily get another job, the reason being they use all the latest technologies and people can code without using google/stack overflow . 2. We cannot imagine a sector/industry without the support of technology. Even renewable energy/agricultural sector is extensively is using Cloud Services. Be it Healthcare, Automotive, Retail, CPG, Banking etc etc are heavily dependent on technology. Few years back business was driving technology, but now technology is driving business. So truth is, one who stays up to date can earn million per year(dollars)without even thinking of opening startups! Problem with Indian IT companies are they are getting only support projects(rarely these companies get dev projects around 20%) as foreign companies want some low paid workers to handle these supports 24/7. Due to this, people who work for these indian IT companies gets less real dev exposure. After 6-7yrs doing the same job, people gets into comfort zone or afraid of moving to Dev projects. With 6-7yrs experience and two jumps, one can easily make 22+ Lakhs per year… Now what people in 6-7yrs experience think is, they can survive with this life long. But the truth is not. people with 10+yrs if they can’t move up the ladder, those are the ones get fired… one should understand what matters most is, surviving in IT between the age 36-55. But most of them taking it very light. You get real dev exp only in a startup or in a product based companies… my advise to the youngsters is, if you want to survive in IT stay up to date… learn two or more programming languages, be good in algorithms, be good at maths(can help if someone wants to move into AI/ML).. there are lot of open sources available all over. All you need is the right focus with positive mindset, stay hungry and be curious!! Either Join a startup, try and fail, try and fail, try and fail… the people with most failures will have solution to majority of the problems from experience. Or join any Faang companies or any product based companies that is good and making good revenues!!!

Ideally an IT professional should be multi skilled and parallelly they should have the desire to acquire more skills and knowledge. That's what companies expects from the resources.
And moreover as you say more than 80% of the projects comes from US, UK, Europe. If they are in recession, obviously the projects which are outsourced to Indian companies will be halted .That in turn affects resource requirements.

Watching this interview is alarming.. which means IT engineering is a total waste.. nobody turns young .. so naturally it is not safe to go to IT industry.. stupid craze for IT.. so a person should be happy with small jobs & less income because in the long run it is not safe.. please don't fall for the high income.. youngsters be careful.
