- Опубліковано 13 лип 2024
- What the Tech? In this episode, we dive deep into a 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB engine. This one is broken and out for repair so we get to check out carnage and all the cool technology of1970's Ferrari. This engine was oddly overbuilt and had a very low horsepower output but the retro features and creative ingenuity definitely make up for it. Enjoy this show!

What do you guys think of naming the series "What the Tech?" Give me some suggestions for other mechanically interesting cars. Cool old or new tech, weird designs, bad designs, good designs, crazy engineering, etc.
Do old beatle, it's classic!
Yes
I'd call the new series "LegitTech". Don't lose your brand!
I like it. How about a tech comparison of a 40's Jeep to the new JL Wrangler?
Air-cooled cars and show the carbs on the Ferrari being synced, if they do it.
Timing belt service can be done without removing engine , same with clutch
Seriously, Ferrari dealerships do not do 308 engine out timing belt or clutch service. I’ve done my share of belt service via the wheel well and it’s fairly straightforward. This job however is more than a belt service yet still can be accomplished in car if the piston is not damaged.
100% engine does not have to come out, I own one and do my own belts. Rear wheel off and wheel arch liner off and all is accessible. 348 onwards the engine had to be removed (up until much later cars)
@@glenmynard3926 Also parts are cheaper than porsche
But these guy don't really know what there doing. I.E. shim and bucket.
Wouldn't let these clowns touch my 308. 6k for a belt change,wtf!!
Alex was hand talking like a real Italian in the intro. The Ferrari brings out the heritage
I was waiting for him to get close to the block and softly whisper in the intake in Italian to help fix it.
I really like the idea of someone doing mechanical reviews on vehicles.
watch the car wizard then lol
As do I. Some quirky stuff.
Engine out for a 308 belt service?? Well, that's the first I've heard of that. That alone would make me nervous about using this shop. "North of $6K" for a belt service on a 308? Let me rethink that...run from that shop!
Yep, I've owned a 308 GTB for over 20 years now, and the engine has never been out. Belts are changed every 4 years irrespective of mileage - see some more frequent suggestions around, but have an older Ferrari mechanic and he is totally comfortable with that. It's a bit of a fiddle with the engine in - one of the gas tanks has to be moved an inch or so to get clearance for the belt cover, but after that it's all plain sailing. Costs around NZ 2k (about US 1300), so not that expensive (as are most other parts for the 308).
Exactly. But the babble sounds impressive for the video :-) I did my own belt change on 1976 308GT4, same engine. A couple of hours work taking my time.
*Ferrari owner: "So how many labor hours are we looking at?"*
*Mechanic: "Um... let me call my accountant."*
Or if it was Hoovie and the Car Wizard, Wizard would be looking at islands, Rolexes, vacation mansions, etc😅
Then accountant calls a loaner/mortage bank to contact the owner and negotiate.
0:19 So like a doug demuro review but useful?
Ive been waiting for this my entire life, lmao.
Quirks and features is so, so cringe. Please mock DeMuro with reckless abandon.
car wizard has been for a while
Fuck, that guy annoys me. He gives the most shit reviews of the most interesting cars.
@@bhuuthesecond I agree 100% He makes reviews for 'car guys' who can only identify supercars.
I wanna see under the hood, I wanna learn about weird design choices and engine setups
Not some bullshit about where the glovebox is or how the interior buttons look.
Great video Alex .... Ive got a couple of 308s ill ping across the pond to you
Thanks brother, I'll take them!
You guys should do a collab on a ferrari. Preferably vintage and ratty. alex needs to get back to his italian roots!
Would be a fun short video of your Mom hanging out in that shop, maybe in a comfy chair watching “her shows” and she is there to translate the shop / parts manual for the mechanic. Eventually the mechanic is sitting with your Mom watching Judge Judy. Your Mom then cooks lunch for the shop... “you are putting that transmission back in this afternoon. You need to eat! Have some lasagna.”
I imagined Mom expertly telling the mechanic step-by-step instructions of how to rebuild the engine...
Definitely make this a series. Been geeking out with you over a year and learned a lot. Shade tree for life and enjoy learning and working on cars
I could definitely fix this
Doubt it. 🤣 J/K.
Duct tape doesn't count as a fix Sam.
Lol! Yea right sam!
You mean auction it off
Would need his step-mom's help.
I love color. It’s nice to see one that’s not red, as much as I like that too. 😂
Exactly, that blue really works with the lines of the 308.
If you don't rush and appreciate the process, fixing it can be a rewarding experience. Plus it's a 308 GT, you know your going to treat it with care.
They went a bit overboard with the Italian stripes though, no need for them round the air intakes.. (would have looked better with a single, thin silver stripe).
The gearhead in me really loves the inside look at how things work. I will never own a Ferrari or be competent to service one, but it fascinates me.
You're the one and only G Alex, huge fan.
Go with What The Tech, that's a cool self explanatory title. Love your videos!! 🙂👍
Hoovie is selling a couple more cars soon so you can always pick up another project from him lol
LegitRoadKill Episode 2, I’m in!
Alex hasn't shown us his hanger to store all his cars yet. But, he lives in Chicago, he just push them onto the street to park them. No one will know they're broken.
Uh, you don't think that's Hoovie's Mercedes CDI in the background?
Especially the Bently - made for UA-cam mechanical horror stories.
@@peterhelm6003 The problem with the Bently is the time it takes to get parts.
This is why I love your channel. I like the tear down with the geeky details on how things work. Keep it up. Oh and can you stop making it look so easy.
OJ is so right. Quote every possibility and you'll scare most customers away thinking you're a crook. It's a delicate balancing act without x-ray vision.
Hell yeah Alex, that was great to see! I love digging into 'carnage' and the like of exotic and even just kinda rare cars.. You have such a great attitude and excellent delivery of what you see. Thanks SO much for the content!
Alex, I wasn't sure how the mechanical videos were going to be, but after watching this on the 308, I hope you continue. I am an engineer and it is really cool to know how things work. I really like seeing things ripped apart and then with your mechanical insight bringing the oddities to light. Looking forward to future videos. This is one of my favorite channels, keep up the great content.
It's easy to think that double or hard valve springs has to do with high hp engines, but as you mentioned, it has more to do with high revving engines. It's at high revvs valves start to float with to soft springs. High boost can also induce valve float at some installations
Alex, to say I love this content would be an understatement. “Mechanical car reviews” literally something I’ve dreamed of content wise from someone with your knowledge, thank you sir. I mean it.
Cool video! I also highly recommend Tyrrell Classic Workshop, who shows how to manually balance these multicarb setups. Like, with a hosepipe to listen to the carbs, and a screwdriver. Engine whisperer.
As a former mechanic myself I love content like this. Please make more of it
Any ideas why the belt snapped Alex, it's pretty rare for them to do that. How long since last belt service in mileage time. I've had belts on my Testarossa and Boxer that are about 15-20 years old and look ok, obviously with rubber belts its impossible to tell from looks alone. Belts are easy and accessible on the 308 if its just regular maintenance its through the rear passenger wheel arch.
I'm not really sure but they did look old. I showed the broken one in the video. Can you tell anything off the markings on the belt?
@@LegitStreetCars yer I saw the one on video, really hard to tell with rubber belts. Car looked pretty clean and well cared for so was curious if there was any clues why it happened.
I'll let you know if they find anything. Now I want an old Ferrari
Hey Scott, what do you think of the colour matching (or not matching) of the interior ? Just wondering...
@@themessenger5868 not my favourite contrast if I’m honest. I love the blue paint but would prefer straight tan or crema interior
Alex I loved the format! Finally more than just pointing flashlights at a car and talking about it. So nice to actually see the mechanicals and how everything goes together! I've been a technician for a decade, and old tech is what I love
Great video Alex!! Keep doing videos like this one from time to time!
Nice Ferrari and color combo by the way (not sure about that brown carpet with red leather and blue exterior)
Awesome Alex , love seeing stuff like this in older iconic motoring legends, being in my 40s and been breathing living gearheadsness its great
Definitely a fan! Nice work Alex.
I like the idea of doing a "quirks and features" of the engine instead of the car itself 😎
"Legit characteristics and oddities of "legit street cars""
Boom 🤯 lol idk sounds good though
loved the format of the video, the in depth information of the car and engine that doesn't depend on hi tech to have interesting content, always nice to have a review from a mechanic, keep up the good work :D
Totally down for a series of vids like this. The anatomy of interesting cars is what draws me to rebuild channels. You just cut to the best parts!
Please make this a series, I love this
I hope you make this a series because this stuff is SUPER COOL to see. I would love to spend some time behind the wheel of one of these cars, but I can't imagine spending the equivalent of another S2000 every three years just to keep the car on the road.
Great content. I love this concept/format. Keep em come’N Alex! 👍👍👍
grate videos man👍😎 with tech included
I love the “tech review” idea. In-depth videos are always fun and unique, and your E55 series was a great example of that, I learned a ton!
The original minis also had a weird engine/clutch/gearbox setup with the drive doubling back from the clutch through a gear to drive the gearbox mounted under the engine. The engine and gearbox shared the same engine oil. Bit of a challenge doing the clutch if you didn't have the tools.
First time here. Informative, clear, drama (and music free) presentation. Perfect thanks 🙂
1:32 that M3 colour scheme reminds me of my childhood
Fiat 124 had the same style of lash pads. Worked on one in the 70's, the proper size pads were backordered 3-4 months for delivery in Los Angeles, the pad runs on a land around the inside outer edge in the cup.
Really enjoyed that, thanks Alex.
This was really interesting, thank you for publishing this video.
LOVE this type of video! Here are the inner workings of a vehicle that was fantasy material when I was much younger.
Very cool video with lots of interesting information. Looking forward to more videos like this one where many interesting engineering solutions and designs are explained, i just love to learn more about these things and understand each car manufacturer’s philosophies.
I enjoyed this. Keep em coming.
Love how honest OJ is!!
Was just introduced to your channel, and I am impressed. Especially, with your character and drive, and to be so young and ambitious. Wow! Great content. Thank you so much for the additional information you continuously add.
Love the colour combo. Enjoyable to watch . Well done.
This series is great. Looking forward to this!
Alex, I love the idea of exploring Automotive Technologies as you did in this video. Great idea to Showcase vehicles in repair. I hope you do many more videos like this one.
Alex this is brilliant. Thank you.
What Oj said about customers is right. Giving a quote to a customer has to be explain very well. There is almost always something extra in there that will need to be addressed. I can not give out the total until im done.
Alex, Love this video and the idea of doing mechanical reviews of cars. Great idea!! I will continue watching.
Keep them coming!
Okay the ferrari is great but that BMW with the color scheme from MW looks amazing!
Characteristics and oddities sounds good 👍
Excellent vid. More of this type please
I really enjoyed this mechanical review. Something I haven’t seen before, but really loved. Keep doing them please. I don’t care what you call them, as long as you make them.
Great idea Alex with the new content. Great idea. Please expand!
Very much like this type of video! Interesting to see the technology that is shared with my 60's Datsun (such as dual valve springs on a low hp engine). Thanks, Alex!
Loved it! I wanna see more of this type of content.
this is an amazing approach
I love this format
Excellent video and great idea for content. Keep it part of your main channel, after all it is all car stuff!
Excellent video!
Ajoj Valve clearance is adjusted using these washers. There is a hook for which it is compressed, and special pliers come into those grooves and you remove the washer and choose the right diameter due to the clearance of the valves.
You could do a series on bizarre drivetrains, the 308 qualifies, next do a Saab 900, or early VW FWD (Dasher, Fox)
I miss my transverse saab 900s
Well the saab 900 is kinda backwards....
I love these videos. Definitely start a What The Tech series 👍🏽❤️
Finally...someone who reviews on the wonderful aspect of technology in cars instead of how fast it goes, how great it corners, how many coffee cup holder it has etc......
Legit Street Tech. I love this content
Love the concept of this video
Great video as I love Ferraris. I even went to the factory in Summer 2003. With respect to maintenance, I heard from other UA-cam channels that once the 308 is up to par, it's very reliable. Cheers!;)
Please continue with this series!!!!!
Great video. More like these please.
OMG !!! You brought back memories - a friend and I made a bet during a Naval Cruise ( Westpac ) on which one would buy a 308 first. He purchased a SWEEEEET 77' Yellow 308 just hours before me and I went with a Red 77' Corvette. Oh Man, those were the days !! Nonetheless, Thanks for posting this !!
What the Tech???! I LOVE it! Let's keep it going! I love this kind of stuff!
This is great!! I’d like to see some highlights of well engineered things on cars that are notoriously poorly made in the public eye. Volkswagen and Audi products from the early 2000s are pretty interesting, lots of things break but there’s some clever tech going on too.
This was certainly a cool and very interesting video series to learn! Please make more of these!
This is cool. I definitely appreciate good engineering. Please, continue giving the estimates. The reality check helps.
Yes, Alex, do it! Anything you can add to the public knowledge will be appreciated - maybe not now, but certainly in the future. Just consider how knowledge of carburetor repair has dwindled. Keep up the fine, professional work.
I like the idea of a tech series very much. Looking forward to it!
I like it! Keep coming with the “Mechanical Reviews”
I really enjoyed this video. I've always been fascinated by older Ferrari and Lambo engines.
Switches are always cooler than buttons!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this,
It would make a brilliant series, seeing a striped engine and then a chat with a specialist mechanic to go through the good bad and ugly bills/ finds and parts accessibilities.
Its okay alex, you have finished more cars in a year than tavarish has finished in 5.
Great video
What the Tech is a great name. But I enjoy your videos enough that I think combining, not separating tech & reviews seems right.
Always interesting. Brings one groups interest into both groups.
This is great. I would love to see more videos like this.
Hope this gets some traction, I also geek out on mechanical teardowns !
Keep it going Alex, I am a specialist in geek and enjoy your vblogs
Thanks!!
I have a 308 in a similar spec. Glad you made this video.
Nice. I have Ferrari envy. : )
Q&A:
*Curious, what color is yours? How often do you drive it (I assume just a few hours on weekends)? And lastly, do a lot of folks in public stop & ask you about your 308?*
TIA for your answers. ✓
Really cool. Thanks for sharing.
This is a great video series idea. I enjoy seeing the mechanical quirks of cars I’ll probably never have the chance to work on.
Nice format, love it, more pretty please.
08:32 The European engine spec was 255 hp and redline was 7700 rpm so the dual valve springs were probably a good choice. The Group4/Group B 308GTB rally cars were 288-330 hp and revving higher. This was all before mass adoption of 4-valve heads, ECUs and before the wide availability of synthetic engine oil.
Love the car info. Love the older tech on cars
Excellent content, I really like the deep dive. Having said that, this just reaffirms why I love Toyota’s.
In my opinion, one of the most beautiful Ferrari's ever
I agree. I like a lot of 70s cars that people love to dog. Like 77 Z28'S. lol
Beautiful car ! I would love a series on this car .👍
